I watched the movie last night, and obviously it's just a movie so might not be correct, but Tonya had no money she came 4th in the Olympics so she lost sponsorships and was back to working as a waitress. The husband or bodyguard paid some guy to do it. Apparently, the bodyguard also sent Tonya a threatening letter. Why on earth he was a bodyguard, I don't know he really was super stupid in the film to the point of it being a bit of a laugh really.
@@troll.0835 Exactly!! I hate how people won’t even give her a chance when she got accused of something she claims she didn’t know about. That is highly un-fair. Honestly, Nancy didn’t deserve what she got, but I’ll admit what Tonya HAD was MUCH worse.
I think the evil stepsister was Nancy on the final skate for the gold medal Nancy got silver and Oksana got the gold, Nancy was acting like a sore loser saying shit about Oksana crying and then came the moment of the medals watch how Nancy gives this ugly side eye glare at Oksana. U don't have to take my word for it check the video on RUclips. Man Nancy is a hater! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The move is outstanding. Beyond the Tonya/Nancy saga, it was a painful demonstration of the potential consequences of poverty, social ostracization, parental abuse and domestic violence. Given her social circumstances it's actually pretty amazing she ever achieved anything at all in figure skating.
You warm to the girl cos of the film... and she was the only one/first to do the quadruple thingymijig! Ice skating? It's like balancing on a fence and you'll fall onto concrete. Skaters are like ballerinas in that it's a tough accomplishment and doubly so to make it look graceful. Those ballerinas stand on their tip toes! 👍
I don't believe that Nancy Kerrigan was all sweet and everything, that was evident when she was pretty rude to Oksana. Do I feel bad about what happened? Yeah I do. But I don't think Nancy Kerrigan is all innocent as far as being a decent person. And I'm glad Oksana ended up beating her, and won the gold. Well deserved.
I don't think the quality of sweetness or a person's character was at all the criteria why Nancy was the victim of a violence to prevent her from winning at the Nationals and the Olympics. It was a stupid evil plot by Tonya!s team for greed and money. But it backfired and Nancy, despite losing in the Olympics got all the benefits of endorsement. Bad Karma for Tonya.
So that makes it OK for Tonya to have somebody whack her knees? This was serious and had to have been a huge distraction both physically and mentally for Kerrigan to overcome. If it did not happen maybe she would have won the gold that Olympics.
When she said “I get my second chance in life to be loved and be happy” I really felt that. Most people have no idea how hard it is to come out of trauma/chaotic childhood, “make something of yourself”, and not screw it up by repeating the same patterns.
Oh so that gives her a right to do what she has done? I had a rough childhood and I don’t take it out on others! I was beat and molested! So fuck out of here
Tonya is one brave soul. Imagine she took all those blows since she was a child, she could have given up but she stood up and took everything. It makes me cry that no one believed her and everyone comes at her to drag her down.
It’s really brave having your ex husband injure your rival. It’s ridiculous to think she didn’t know, you fell for an interview where she’s trying to reinvent herself as a victim.
She's an easy target. Anyone poor, less-attractive, alone, is an easy target. Kerrigan was like a swan compared to Harding but the latter could do the triple thingy!
@@theastrologistandthephilos9544 I will forever stand by her because I believe she is innocent. She was an amazing figure skater and deserves the best recognition for it.

honest to god, she didn’t do anything. what was she going to do? tell the authority’s she somewhat suspected something? she was training for the olympics and scared of her ex husband. give her a break
Scared of the ex husband she went back to several times? Willingly? Come on. Did she have a shitty life? Yes. I feel bad for that 100% but she had an idea of what was going on or what their intentions were. She should have gone to the authorities so that if anything did happen she covered herself by trying to inform them. The cops could have alerted Nancy Kerrigan to a possible attack like they did for Tonya when there was a death threat against her. For me it seems like she thought “hey if they do something it’s good for me and I wasn’t involved so oh well”. That’s how I feel.
@@cmml06 no I don’t believe that in her situation. Yes those situations exist but her husband has always been portrayed as somewhat of an idiot. He hit her but was truly in love with her and didn’t really have the smarts. He was never portrayed as threatening in any way. She just didn’t have any examples of good relationships, that’s why she went back to him. It was either her mom or him. The lesser of two evils I guess. That’s why I DID feel bad for her. I have NEVER, in any documentaries, got the impression she was petrified of him because he was always kind of a dunce. She had the opportunity to go from rags to riches had she surrounded herself with better people. Not every woman is a victim. Sorry. I know that’s the world we are living in today, where all woman are victims and never wrong but I don’t buy into it. Her situation was that she was rough around the edges, understandably, and didn’t know how to better value herself because of her moms shitty parenting. That’s why people will always have a soft spot for her, me as well, but she knew what was going to happen. Do I think she should have been banned for life? Not really. That was a huge blow to her. BUT Nancy Kerrigan is definitely no angel either! She always seemed stuck up.
I got chills and tears in my eyes when her character in the movie said "it felt like being attacked again. All of YOU (the media and public) were my attackers." After a literal lifetime of being beaten by her mother and husband 😞
No, but it wasn't Tonya's fault, so what does it matter if "her people" BRUISED her knee? It wasn't her. End. Of. Story. Losing the career she loved over someone else's actions was punishment enough don't you think??
"I, Tonya" is a great movie. I was somewhat apprehensive about it when I walked into the theater a couple of weeks ago. But I was very pleasantly surprised by the Scorsese-like craftsmanship of the whole thing.
Ppl are so corrupt. I feel bad for both girls however I think Tonya was the fall guy. I honestly don’t think she had anything to do with what happened to Nancy.
To be straight I went to see this movie just thinking about Tonya and then i came out thinking about LaVona coz that's how brilliant Allison Janney is in this film
If she knew her bodyguard and ex husband were up to something to screw Kerrigan out of the Olympics/skating competition, Tonya should have said something instead of keeping quiet. This is what flushed her career down the toilet. I hear Nancy wasn't perfect either but that doesn't excuse being attacked in that manner.
i get that but at the same time, what was the right thing to do in that situation? her ex husband was abusive. if she tried to go against his wishes he would hurt her. and even if she went to the police, what was she supposed to say? i think my abusive husband might be planning an attack on an unknown victim, but i have no evidence to prove it. tonya wasn’t perfect but she was painted to be an awful person and its not that simple.
Most who endure similar sufferings that Tonya has been trough in life end up on the streets or kill themselves. The fact that she is still alive and sane is amazing 👍👏
Tonya 🖤 was the first American woman to successfully land a triple Axel in competition, and the second woman to do so in history (behind Midori Ito). She is also a two-time Olympian and a two-time Skate America Champion. Nancy Kerrigan was a snotty, Biach! I witnessed her real character when 16 yr, old Oksana Baiul won the gold medal.
I really believe that Tonya was more or less an innocent victim in all this I mean she would have to be certifiably insane to throw away all her years of hard work for a poorly thought out plan like that. Who in the world but idiots who don't understand sports would do anything like that?
You can’t be “more or less” innocent of a violent crime. You’re either innocent of being involved in it, or you are not. Tony Harding was involved in the attack on Nancy Kerrigan, and that makes her an absolute inhuman monster.
Whether it was Margot Robbie's brilliant portrayal / acting, or not, I found myself really sympathetic towards Tonya after watching this film, I wasn't before it. I feel she was very badly treated throughout her life and failed by almost all including those closest to her. Although she was a fighter, and rolled with the punches, it must of hurt her emotionally. She had a tough life, and despite it she was an amazing ice skater. Brilliant film.
Great movie! having had a bit of a "Dickensian" childhood myself, and often felt the sting of classism despite academic achievement, I've always felt deep empathy for Ms. Harding.
Classism? I grew up in the town next to Kerrigan and it is very middle to lower middle class town. Her Dad was a blue collar worker. This whole idea of Kerrigan as a rich elite princess is total BS. Kerrigan's mother was blind - how tough was that as a kid and wanting your Mom to see you on the ice? Harding is just trashy trailer park trash and a horrible person. Kerrigan had WAY more style and grace but our country roots for people are are horrible people.
There's no apology in that face to face, D Leo. Definitely some feeling sorry for herself, yes ("I didn't have supportive parents like you...") - but no apology to Kerrigan.
Even though, if she apologized, do you think Nancy would have forgiven her? I don´t think so. Apology can´t be here because she did it on purpouse and the apology would be fake. Both of them know that.
One of our teachers once told us to take that approach to smooth things over if you didn't feel you were to blame for a situation. I am sure Tonya's Lawyer or her coach wrote the whole statement and told her how to deliver it, can't help but think she does however come over very sincere and sweet at that press conference when she was young.
I watched the movie and noticed something. Her mother used to heckle her and if it's true, paid people to heckle her. The "death threat" from Jeff to Tonya, when the Oregon police show up when they were together, I wouldn't put past her mother. Logically it makes sense.
I saw I, Tonya and remember the actual events. We may never know if Tonya had prior knowledge but I have to say I like her. What you see is what you get. She's tough and had to be to overcome her challenges in life. I find her quite refreshing.
Me too!! I think now, 28 years later, we can reflect more objectively on what happened. The press had a great time with this story. Nancy vs Tanya. Good vs evil. I think today most people are much kinder in their opinion of Tonya. I haven't seen I, Tonya yet, but it sounds more like it tells her side of the story. I'm glad she is finally getting to do this.
Nancy has talked about it since she was on Dancing With The Stars, I feel like Tonya is forced to talk about it because of the movie coming. I also believe Tonya is taking the opportunity to try and get people to see she wasnt the monster that everyone thinks she is/was. Did she make any mistakes? yes. She payed the price and has lived her life yet shes still getting hate for one: a crime she didnt commit. and two: trying to defend herself, which she has the right to do. Overall this interview would not have happened without the movie coming out
Erin - Chicken before the egg here: Tonya's talking about it is the seed of the movie. Nancy's answering some questions about this during the interview while appearing on DWTS, was provoked by the production of this movie. Kerrigan has consistently gone out of her way to make her life about her family and her goals, and to (as much as possible) distance herself from these events that she never, ever wanted to be part of.
I think Tonya Harding is always having interviews, it's not because this movie came out, to stay relevant in today's society and for the money. There is evidence that she was involved. Instead of actually practicing routine, she plotted to have Nancy beat with a club. Just watch her performances from the 1994 Olympics, you can tell she didn't practice like she should and Scott Hamilton makes a comment about her lack of practice. Nancy will answer questions if she is already on a show, but she doesn't go out of her way to talk to about the incident. Nancy tries to distance herself as much as she can from something that could have potentially ruined her career.
Eilonwy Hewlett she has no problem with caps lock; she was emphasizing the correct words in caps in the correct context. Yet YOU seem to have a problem with inappropriate and uncalled for sarcasm, and you should get that looked at #smhsnarkyfooluncool
I briefly mentioned this event when talking to a young person. She had never heard of it. Didn't seems that long ago. So I did a quick wiki search. Maybe I'm older than i thought. In just seven short years Tonya will get the senior discount at Denny's.
THIS is where that "why" is from. I remember south park using it as an audio sample, and thought it was from a war-video, and thought "that's in bad taste". But it's just from here
I actually felt sorry more for Tonya, but remember hearing about the "attack". But also remember how Nancy reacted to Oksana winning the gold medal too.
At 2:17 she says she "overheard them talking about stuff . . . maybe we should take somebody out so she could be on the team . . ." I gotta ask. Why did she not tell anybody about it? No hate, no blame, just curios.
Because as her ex who regularly beat the crap out of her for no reason except he could later admitted, he told her they were just talking shit and if she told anybody she would both get her ass beat again and be made to look like a fool in the public's eye and she couldn't afford the latter because skating, especially back then was judged on your public image almost as much as your actual skating kills and they had told her if she didn't look "Stable" as in the appearance of happily married they would kick her off of the Olympic team in 1994.
dnahubs tonya admitted that after the attack she knew hr did it but did not tell the cops. She didnt tell bc she wanted it to happen. The cops found notes in tonya's writing detailing where nancy was going to be practicing at.
You hear people say a lot of things and nothing is ever carried out. If she had said something to someone would they have done much of anything, probably not. People usually don't take too seriously "I heard they might try to take someone out." There is no crime unless there is actually a crime carried out, talking about one doesn't mean anything, especially at that time. She probably thought saying "Guys that is totally stupid." put an end to it. There's lots of reasons. Hindsight is always 20/20. Like I'm sure afterwards the security said "Well we would have taken the threat seriously." I kind of doubt that. Looks like people were coming and going as they pleased from videos of the arena that day.
I can also understand Kerrigans point of view. Being clubbed with a steel crowbar on your leg while in prime condition to compete in the Olympics ? One would likely be pretty unsympathetic as to how much Tonya Harding had to do with what her "group" did. However from the outside looking in, ones sympathies might be more nuanced. I still have admiration for Tonya Harding for coming from what she did to compete at the top of her sport.

That’s literally exactly how I found her. I would always watch that show, had no idea who she was, but she was always my favorite. Then I heard this Weird Al song where he sang about what happened, then years later saw I, Tonya.
I was on a skating team in Minnesota in Roseville oval center and I was clubbed far worst of the time and money was a discrimination against lynn deatherage who has a disabled conditions may not be able to skate again. It happened I quit it after the fact that it didn't even happened when I was pushed and clubbed right in front of tonya and Nancy both all due to a mild learning curve disorder which I was bullied by others who assumed I'm from a trailer park girl. Untrue. My old house 🏡 was fixed up nicely over the years ago.
If she overheard things she should have immediately gone to the authorities. She is a part of it. Awesome skater, but needs to admit that she should have told police.
Please. You don't believe anything or even care because men look at other men as equal, but men look at women as, "Who cares, it's some woman drama." All YOU see are two women figure skaters arguing...
I was always in love w/ Tonya, . When things went down, I said " Tonya is not responsable for what other people do ", those idiots had a choice. The movie is about a person who has been BULLIED all the way to the judges. Yes, Nancy is our Queen and we love her. I voted for Nancy while on DWTS, she looks great, very happy for you Nancy, lets be happy for Tonya. The movie is about someone who didn't fold. Tonya, you look great.
No matter what people say yes she may have over heard a conversation or two about the attack but no way should this be directly aimed at her and her only she was one of the best female skaters in history and to come from a family like that just shows how fast people can judge no matter where she is from she still counts I feel like that could have been one of the reasons she got the major blame
Nancy's knee was bruised not shattered. There were no fractures and she recovered way to quickly for it to have been "broken". She was able to skate again. Tonya was given a LIFE SENTENCE. All she ever knew was skating, she dropped SCHOOL. And they took it away.
You know what Conspiracy time Nancy Kerrigan ordered the hit on herself and told them not to really injure her so she could pin it on Tonya and get her biggest competition kicked out of figure skating.

Heartbreaking to watch Tonya Harding. She might not hv been a very nice person but she hasn't had it easy all her life at all. Never once apologized. Even if she didnt do it, how hard is it to say, "Im sorry for what my fucked up husband did to you." Shes garbage and so is anyone defending her.
She paid the price. The most essential thing for her which is ice skating got taken away forever. She has the right to state her opinion about the truth, just like the movie.
Finally somebody said it. I was thinking the same thing.
Ramona Marple She didnt Pay the price! Nancy did. She took everything from her or what could have been. The ultimate price would be to have Nancy banged in the knee with a crowbar every year on the anniversary of what she did to Nancy for the rest of her life.
Nancy recovered and came 2nd at the Olympics. She was fine.
Seth M who is to say she couldn’t have been first.
"Evil Wicked Step Sister" oh hell no. That's just rude. 😡

I thing this whole drama can summed up as in 1:35 - Nancy wasnt all good, Tonya wasnt all bad
The move is outstanding. Beyond the Tonya/Nancy saga, it was a painful demonstration of the potential consequences of poverty, social ostracization, parental abuse and domestic violence. Given her social circumstances it's actually pretty amazing she ever achieved anything at all in figure skating.
The 'movie' was BORING.....if you could call it a movie! SMH! Turned it off after 10 minutes!!

Ice skating? It's like balancing on a fence and you'll fall onto concrete. Skaters are like ballerinas in that it's a tough accomplishment and doubly so to make it look graceful. Those ballerinas stand on their tip toes! 👍
@@tonisumblin2719wtf do you mean? You idiot
Why does it matter whether Nancy was sweet or not? That’s not the point. This is about Tonya being complicit in an assault
So that makes it OK for Tonya to have somebody whack her knees? This was serious and had to have been a huge distraction both physically and mentally for Kerrigan to overcome. If it did not happen maybe she would have won the gold that Olympics.

I'm glad oksana won it too. Nancy is a evil witch like Tonya, as Nancy keeps using the victims card.
Jennifer wellman....don't you think you should do something about your face?? SMH!
The media was a big part of her undoing, they made Nancy look like the perfect ice princess and Tonya the opposite. Which wasn’t all true
You are so right
Just like when media chose Justin over Janet, it's just so unfair
What did Nancy do besides get assaulted and tonya knew what was happening and never said anything?
This is why we, as audience, shouldn’t swallow every content we get, and question what media tells us to believe.
She got crowbarred in the fucking knee dude, wtf? Who gives a shit if she was a bitch, it’s assault.
So fuck out of here
You know who didn't get a second chance? Nancy

Scared of the ex husband she went back to several times? Willingly? Come on. Did she have a shitty life? Yes.
Sorry. Her husband was no prize. I could believe that he planned the attack without letting Tonya in on it.

It doesn't mean that Nancy deserved to be attacked. Both women were victim.

When I heard about the attack, I immediately felt that something was off, it was just too obvious and too indirect for it to be her.
We love you Tonya
one of the most iconic dramas in my life
It's more the media than tonya
Whether it was Margot Robbie's brilliant portrayal / acting, or not, I found myself really sympathetic towards Tonya after watching this film, I wasn't before it. I feel she was very badly treated throughout her life and failed by almost all including those closest to her. Although she was a fighter, and rolled with the punches, it must of hurt her emotionally. She had a tough life, and despite it she was an amazing ice skater. Brilliant film.
Saw it 3x.
But it’s not the truth. It’s glorifying a criminal. Just like how dahmer and anna delvey got sensationalised
Stop giving both of them press for God sakes
Some people are very easy to read and she's one of them...for the people that do pick up on this, know what I'm talking about.
Great movie! having had a bit of a "Dickensian" childhood myself, and often felt the sting of classism despite academic achievement, I've always felt deep empathy for Ms. Harding.
WildwoodClaire1 right behind ya 👍🏻👌🏻
It's sad that people are judged on background but not the fault of those who have background that they do. Really sad story.
Tonya was judged simply on the fact that she was a horrible person.
Nancy's brother murdered his dad, didn't he?
Nancy said she never did. She had heard her saying the she was sorry it happened to her in news conference. Never to her face.
Audrey Saying you are sorry it happened is not an admission that you had anything to do with it. Any lawyer will tell you that. As I`m sure one did.
Lets say for one minute that Tonya had minimal involvement in all of it, do you expect her to say sorry for something she had not done.
Shes the most feisty, hilarious role model in skating I've ever seen. Shes amazing.

Why does Tonya Harding have to keep talking about this incident? Nancy doesn't talk about it. She doesn't go out of her way to talk about it.
I know that. I just don't like Tonya. And it looks you have an intermittent problem with your caps lock button. You should get that looked at.

THIS is where that "why" is from. I remember south park using it as an audio sample, and thought it was from a war-video, and thought "that's in bad taste". But it's just from here
where is solid proof? yes some may find this sketchy, but she DOESNT deserve it. we don’t even know the truth or the fact.
What about an interview with Tonya’s husband? Interviewed separately and simultaneously. They would probably have their own versions of the truth.
Well like she said, he was dumb as a post. She probably didn't take it seriously.
Probably wasn't taking them seriously.
Omg ! No words!

Makes me sad that someones pure art was just taken away because of someone else's mistakes.
It was Jeff's fault, not hers. She just took the blame because everyone is so stupid to think she's behind it because she's insecure and competitive. PUT THE BLAME ON THAT MAN, HE'S A MONSTER!
