Well, just imagine this. Try to jump as high as you could by your own force. Then try now to jump when someone pushed your feet up. You’re going to know that you can jump higher when you have that assistance. And that is the secret of the jumps in figure skating. The higher you jump, the better and the more spin you do on the air. So why Axels are so special? Well, there are other jumps that also don’t have that toe pick assistance but all of them start at a backward position and landing on a backward position again- creating the number of spins needed. So if you spin in the air 3 times then it is a triple. On the other hand, axels have a forward approach and backward landing- giving an extra half rotation. So if you want to have your axel count as a 3A, you must spin in the air 3 1/2 revolutions. But I want to also take note that when you jump in figure skating, both height and distance are important. And the physics comes in there.
I’m so happy that people are appreciating and remembering what she did in figure skating. All the drama doesn’t take away from the way she made history in the sport.

@The Name Thing Is Not Happening RUclips Tonya tried a triple axel at the 1990 US Olympic Festival Figure Skating in her free skate and fell on it. That was before the 1990 NHK I mentioned above. I don't know if she attempted a 3A in competition before that or how long she may have been practicing it. A 2005 Spokane article I read on Tonya said that when Tonya and her coach Dody saw Midori land an incredible triple axel in practice at the 1990 NHK, Tonya decided when she got back home she would learn and add the triple axel to her program which she did at US Nationals in 1991. Midori I read was attempting the 3A in practice at 14 or 15 years old but suffered a fractured ankle so her coach banned it. After the Calgary olympics in 1988, Midori said in an interview that she decided she had to reactivate the triple axel in order to win at the world and olympic level. Her goal was to attempt and land a triple axel at the 1992 Olympics.

It’s not the issue of understanding the talent, it’s about having interest in the activity in general. I have no real interest in a triple axel or anything about figure skating in general, but I don’t deny the fact that those figure skaters have talent or tons of hours of practice. I tried figure skating, it’s bloody tough. Yeah if I kept at it I would have been good by now but it just wasn’t my thing. The sport doesn’t appeal to me, it’s just a meh. I’m sure those people know that skaters have talent, they’re just not interested in the sport in general. It that could be said of a lot of other activities besides skating.

Midori Ito had the best triple Axels. They were high, well-centered and seemed to float in the air. Watch her triple Axel at the 1990 World Championship in Halifax, or the one she did at the 1990 NHK Championships. Spectacular. To me, she was the best women’s jumper in figure skating.

Yes it does, but honestly most people who commit or conspire in such acts had some kind of poor upbringing. Also keep in mind, this was Tonya telling the story through her own filter. Grain of salt is somewhat required.
Why is there always so much more focus on Americans? Tonya Harding was the first American woman to do a triple axel, but she was not the first woman in the world. Midori Ito was, but Tonya always seems to get mentioned a lot more when the triple axel is brought up. It's ridiculous.
That editing drove me bonkers 😒 The whole time I was trying to understand the move so I could appreciate it and they would start to show the move and I would think, "Ah yes, here it is," and then they WOULD CUT AWAY. Then I was just annoyed with whatever they would show or say afterwards. Not even sure how many times that exact thought sequence happened during the whole thing. He said that he tried landing it in practice but it’s extremely hard , no body has ever attempted it in competition but maybe for the next Olympics we get one from him , tbh i would just rather see him skate the way he does , his usual routines are hard as heck already and the way he skates is just so beautiful that it doesn’t need to be drowned in countless technical elements
Apparently he has landed it in harness and can complete the rotations (but not land) without harness already. I have hope he'll fulfill this dream of his as well in the coming 2-3 seasons. His axel is absolutely gorgeous and huge as it is, so i have no doubt that the quad version wouldn't be any less gorgeous.
Thank you for this! As someone who loves watching gymnastics and figure skating, it was relatively easy to watch gymnastics and learn how stunts were performed and how a routine was created. With figure skating, I've never been able to figure out the difference in axels and for loops, and it drives me crazy!
I landed my double axel in competition the same day that tonya landed her triple axel on the 1991 worlds, excatly 30 years. Im a roller figure skater so a double axel is a big deal since each skate weights almost 2 kg, the most dificult jump ever landed is actually the triple axel, by only 3 men

Hello! Please watch "I, Tonya" (if you haven't) because this says A LOT about Tonya Harding's backstory :) She has been through a lot, and yes maybe Midori did worked harder than her, but have you seen what Tonya has been through? She was raised from an abusive family where her mom forced her into skating and even went as far as to cancel her education. Following this, she ran away from home to live with her ex-husband only to know that he was abusive as well towards her. Also, if this wasn't disheartening enough, she got caught in a scandal where she is partly guilty for wanting to send death threat letters however she never planned to hurt Nancy Kerrigan physically (and for this she was given a 3 year life sentence far worse than the main suspects themelves while also having her career being put to an end). So I want to ask you to please, give Tonya Harding a shot at being put to the spotlight because this is the only and last time she will ever be in it. I love Midori too! She's so amazing for pulling off the courage and determination to do the first ever triple axle, but yes I just want Tonya to be acknowledged as well :)
That's ridiculous! I mean you never see them in the same room together, but that's because Bruce Wayne would never be caught dead in those seedy crime-filled alleys where Batman hangs out! I mean, not after what happened to his parents all those years ago on Crime Alley... RIP Thomas and Martha Wayne. Stop besmirching poor Bruce's good name with these nonsense accusations! The guy's just trying to make a difference in the world (and probably trying to set the world record for most women dated during lifetime)!
Most guys can do it, probably because they just have stronger legs. It's a lot harder for girls, that's why it's really extraordinary when someone does it.

SisterAreDoingIt ForThemselves Actually when my dad broke his shoulder (fractured in four different areas) he didn't feel the pain of his shoulder, only the black eye he had gotten, he hadn't even noticed his arm was broken until he tried to move his arm and it felt numb. My brother broke his leg, split right down the middle of the bone and he hadn't felt anything, he couldn't walk on it but he never screamed in pain, only told the guy that tackled him that it was a good hit.

*voice speaks over footage of Zambonis*
"But the Zamboni is more than just a vehicle for polishing ice skating surfaces..."
*dramatic pause*
"It's a symbol."
*climpering, one-string music with stock footage of zambonis, while the scene changes to a academic office*
*focus on man sitting in front of camera*
Man: "Well, we really need to go into the history of the Zamboni, and the context in which it was conceived, and that's something that a lot of people can't do very easily."
*shot of man blinking while voiceover speaks*
VO: "This is Professor George Veldt, from the University of Toronto, he has researched Zambonis for eight years, and what exactly makes them so notable."
Man, cont'd: "Well, they polish ice and that makes them really useful, and people needed that back in the day."
*change shot to footage of historical Zambonis and various papers*
VO: "But that's not all of it, research has shown that more than 37% of all Zambonis actually-"
And so on. XD
Enthused Norseman thank you
Enthused Norseman I feel like I've learned something here today. Or at least... 37% of something.

Cheers to Tonya! She landed not only 1, but 4 triples altogether in 3 different competitions. A rare and amazing skater.
Tonya was amazing.
MissingNo girl until she smashed Nancy's kneecap in lol
Grimesey she never smashed Nancy's kneecap, and she never intended to.
Zachary still intended to sabotage her though
Grimesey well ... Nancy did it first
Grimesey You should see Nancy react to oksana that won a gold medal. She had a attitude. So she isn't a sweet heart either.
Triple axel sounds like some sort of ultimate move done by the villain of an anime to increase their agility, speed and power.
Villain: "Triple... AXEL!"
*EXPLOSIONS EVERYWHERE WHILE MATTER IS SUCKED TOWARDS THE CENTRE*
Nuclear Cashew it does doesn’t it 😂
I saw it with my eyes
Triple what? (Gets punched)
tripu axew.
Nuclear Cashew Sounds more like a car part.
I'm loving the figure skating focus! If people don't know how talented and powerful figure skaters are, they should now!
meh, this foucs comes and goes every 4 years
It’s not the issue of understanding the talent, it’s about having interest in the activity in general.
MIRAI NAGASU MADE HISTORY
Gina u
Gina yy
Dylan Lourenco first american woman to land triple axel in olympic games
VANITAS
She was born to make history
and yuzu wants to add another rotation to this...
knowing his history with the triple, how it's basically HIS jump, it's no wonder
Sorry but it’s not his jump. I have respect for him but these women made history with it.
@@Chikitew lol i didn't mean it's his jump like he's the only one with a claim to it or bc he made it the most famous. i'm calling it his jump bc if u know anything abt yuzuru, the triple is his default jump and he treats it like it's as easy as any jump with one rotation. not disrespecting these women and the history they made at all, just mentioning how yuzu has integrated it into his skating
@@Chikitew it’s not his jump but it isn’t their jump either if you’re making it about who did it first.
Since a quad axel has now been landed (and landed beautifully) someone needs to do study on the only skater that can land it
Just the fact that Tonya used he Batman soundtrack is so epic. Better than the princess piano music... I once did a rhythmic gymnastics routine on a Nine Inch Nails song. Gotta do something different sometimes.
Niroki Itisme i loves the fact that she refused to go along with the princess bullshit

I get confused. Was it Tonya that had a security guard demolish Nancy's legs or the other way around?
Physics into poetry 🎯👏
So proud of Mirai for landing the triple axel at the Olympics!!
First ever woman to land a triple axel in a world completion: Midori Ito 🇯🇵
First ever woman to land a quadruple jump: Miki Ando 🇯🇵
First ever American woman to land a triple axel in a word completion: Tonya Harding 🇺🇸
First ever woman to land three triple axels in one program: Mao Asada 🇯🇵
First ever American woman to land a triple axel in the Olympics: Mirai Nagasu🇯🇵🇺🇸
agree. Midori did a perfect triple axel in 1990 in Halifax and in 1993 and 1994 as
a pro.
What happen was sooo wrong to Nancy. But after seeing tonya’s movie... it really shows sooo much insight to what she was going through her whole life.
Yes it does, but honestly most people who commit or conspire in such acts had some kind of poor upbringing. Also keep in mind, this was Tonya telling the story through her own filter. Grain of salt is somewhat required.
The triple axel was performed the same year Street Fighter II and the "Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku" spinning kick came out... Coincidence? I THINK NOT

Why is there always so much more focus on Americans? Tonya Harding was the first American woman to do a triple axel, but she was not the first woman in the world. Midori Ito was, but Tonya always seems to get mentioned a lot more when the triple axel is brought up. It's ridiculous.
E - yah i know right its ao americanocentric
Cucky Betamore racist much
Cucky Betamore is this sarcastic or did you just say that honestly? Just curious
Cucky Betamore No, this is the internet. Wow, you're an American stereotype.
E - maybe because were Americans!
In other words, I, Tonya is an amazing movie and Margot Robbie deserves an Oscar for it.
Fadhil Ramadhani YES
Allison Janney will get the Supporting Actress Academy Award.
good movie, but she does not deserve it
Fadhil Ramadhani yes!!!!! I hate how I, tonya didn't get as much hype!! It's a beautiful movie
Fadhil Ramadhani
This video had nothing to do with that movie.
And now the quad axel has finally been done. Well done Ilia
I'm definitely not watching again to count.
Meanwhile my ass can’t even hold myself up when I’m trying to ice skate
Mr Gorbachev, Hadouken this wall.

Midori ito is so underrated😔

ok vox, waiting for the quad axel sequal!!
Who thinks Yuzu can land a 4A someday?
Firebrain not me.
Firebrain heck yes
YESSSS
He said that he tried landing it in practice but it’s extremely hard , no body has ever attempted it in competition but maybe for the next Olympics we get one from him , tbh i would just rather see him skate the way he does , his usual routines are hard as heck already and the way he skates is just so beautiful that it doesn’t need to be drowned in countless technical elements
Apparently he has landed it in harness and can complete the rotations (but not land) without harness already. I have hope he'll fulfill this dream of his as well in the coming 2-3 seasons. His axel is absolutely gorgeous and huge as it is, so i have no doubt that the quad version wouldn't be any less gorgeous.
here after watching Ilia land a 4A, it’s so cool to see the progression in skating!!
ZAMBODIAN coming IN THE END OF THE VIDEO ITS GONA BE LOUD HEADPHONE USERs beware
Sid's BARBER xD
Not all heros wear capes
Sid's BARBER Thanks!
its written Zamboni. It works by spraying water over the ice and freezing it to create a fresh new layer of ice. the more you know...

Figure skaters: *lemme just prove that wrong*
Mirai Nagasu
加藤みずっち. what
加藤みずっち Weebs DansGame
加藤みずっち “みらい なはす”
love her
Claire Knight Yep!
And now Ilia Malinin, a 17 year old, landed a QUAD axel!!!!
Im a roller figure skater so a double axel is a big deal since each skate weights almost 2 kg, the most dificult jump ever landed is actually the triple axel, by only 3 men
Way to go!
Wow
Me: it's 3 am i should sleep (know nothing about figure skating)
Brain: watch Why the triple axel is such a big deal
Harding is by far the best skater of her era and never got her due. Go Tanya!
Phil Edwards is the best Vox presenter by far, every video he does is interesting and fun
Guess if triple is historical... I understand the hype of ilia malinin being Quadgod ✌️👏👏
Mr Gorbachev HADOOKEN this wall
Explain yourself
Mr Valo FINISH HIM !! ^^
ValoTheBrute u rang?
its at 0:16
ugh this guy annoys me, midori ito was the first women to land the triple axel EVER not just in world competition and why is he so focused on tonyas triple when midori did it first??
Because Tonya was an American. Who also became the subject of a huge scandal.
Because tonya’s was more we’ll known. Don’t be upset with the dude. He probably didn’t write the script for the video, he was just doing his job.
He literally never implied Tonya was the first ever. He specifically said American. Vox has a heavy American audience because they’re an American company.
Also, 3:54 because you apparently have the attention span of a potato
Because tonya was the first american
Mirai Nagasu makes Asian-Americans proud! I'm proud to be an Asian RUclipsr!!!
Midori Ito was the first woman to land the triple axel in an international competition in 1988!! What a legend!! ❤❤❤
Tonya made HISTORY AND YOU CAN'T TAKE THAT AWAY FROM HER
Remember when triple axel was such a big deal?
"Tonya Harding, my star"
Ocean too bad she’s a crazy ass criminal!
"With a Crowbar"
Just saying the evidence is there, just saying
Its from a song
P A R I G O N 0w0
You could argue there’s enough evidence to say that almost anyone close to her did it.
Did he just say Bruce Wayne and Batman are the same person??? *dislike*
Hesperus is Phosphorus, and so on...
I mean at least give a spoiler warning
Roman Maclay but they are?
That's ridiculous! I mean you never see them in the same room together, but that's because Bruce Wayne would never be caught dead in those seedy crime-filled alleys where Batman hangs out! I mean, not after what happened to his parents all those years ago on Crime Alley... RIP Thomas and Martha Wayne. Stop besmirching poor Bruce's good name with these nonsense accusations! The guy's just trying to make a difference in the world (and probably trying to set the world record for most women dated during lifetime)!
blasphemy I tell you!
im in love with figure skating, Vox and MIRAI NAGASU now .. thnks
Vox you need to make a new video about the quad axel!
Ok but have you seen Yuzuru Hanyu's triple axel tho
i guess it's just more difficult for girls? idk.
Most guys can do it, probably because they just have stronger legs. It's a lot harder for girls, that's why it's really extraordinary when someone does it.
Guys evolutionarily have more brute strength so yeh, but I wouldn't say "most guys can do it" 😂
Kim Yuna though
Yuzu fans are so annoying
Midori Ito is the first and still the best triple axle by a woman
first, yes. the best? i wouldn't say so. the girls just keep getting better and better with their jumping technique as time goes on.

@@anciiie you should watch her triple axel in 1990 and 1993.
*The Iron Lotus*
From the movie, *"Blades of Glory"* is better haha.
The Iron Lotus from North Korea...........oh no do not search that
I agree 😂 it is such an under rated movie.
that is my mom's favorite movie
Dean Natuno l
Dean Natuno facts.
Love seeing Tonya Harding land that triple. Amazing. Must be such a good feeling. I meanwhile try to skate forwards, at a slow pace, without killing myself!
video editing of every Vox video is spot on.
Who’s here after the quadruple axle was accomplished?
"a triple axel turns physics into poetry"
At least show us the original video first...
Who else loves the elegance of vox videos
Great video! Keep it up!
Its almost impossible to do 3 spins.
Katarina: Hold my beer.
and now a quad was done... how amazing :)
I thought they would use a person but instead they used Barbie....
It's soo hard that most athletes can't do it. Hence why they use CGI for the I, Tonya movie. Please do some basic googling before making that kind of comment.
correction. most WOMEN can't do it. most of the top men can do a triple axel, no problem
Jack Regalado you'd think there's been HD slow mo research video of it by now
inahrum first men to land a triple was in 1978, and when you say most, you mean a dozen or so men on the whole planet...
Yonk they probably have to pay for it, or they were paid by barbie
Videos like this is why Vox is one of my favorite channels. Informative and entertaining. With so much junk on RUclips this channel is a refreshing change.
Nice to see Tonya get some respect for her incredible skill.
Tonya was the first and she was powerful . Her mum pushed her to be the best . Her husband Jeff lived from her money and ruined her carrier with planing the attack . Sad for her . She was so good .
Funny now with Ilia‘s Quad axel
The triple axel is also the name of the core component of the weather machine! Keep a s k I n g questions
Our Founding Liars the triple axel is also the finishing move for Kamen Rider Accel. Let's continue asking more questions
I love your comments on every video
Hey I follow you on Instagram lol

Ruth Sophia ❤️❤️That made me happy haha.
Also I have youtube content too. Just saying
“If you ask her to define triple axle in one word... she has to think about it.”
I can’t think of a word that I could define in one word *without* thinking about it.
Congrats on this video, it's extremely well made.
To bad the only thing I know Tonya Harding for is the kneecapping of Nancy Kerrigan
ne0 ge0 Someone's never watched the smoking gun...
Looks like she was screeeeeetching
ruclips.net/video/voUMQrLy_uY/видео.html
ne0 ge0 Yeah same here,I was not into figure skating then and a teenager so I've always had s terrible impression of her.
If you have to watch a movie to more more about her than just her crime, then she obviously isn't known for much outside of that
SisterAreDoingIt ForThemselves Actually when my dad broke his shoulder (fractured in four different areas) he didn't feel the pain of his shoulder, only the black eye he had gotten, he hadn't even noticed his arm was broken until he tried to move his arm and it felt numb. My brother broke his leg, split right down the middle of the bone and he hadn't felt anything, he couldn't walk on it but he never screamed in pain, only told the guy that tackled him that it was a good hit.
Me before watching: yeah, why is it such a big deal?
Me after watching: ohhhhhhhhhh
I don’t get it
Ilya has now done a quad so yous know now what to make a video about
love mirai nagasu, when i was 11, my family drove to lake placid to watch her skate at the 2007 junior grand prix, ill never forget her performances.
i know nothing about figure skating but now i have a favorite. Mirai seems like a very cool person. love her smile : )
