- The issue of reparations is complex and often controversial. There are differing opinions on whether reparations are an appropriate or even effective way to remedy the horrors of slavery. The California Reparations Task Force recently issued its final report to the California legislature. The legislature there could take up a vote on whether to act on those recommendations as early as this fall. Kamilah Moore is the Chair of that task force and joins the 5 Things podcast to discuss her team's findings and our country's history with reparations.

Forcing the innocent to pay nonvictims for something that happened to neither of them is not reparations.
Reparations is actual proven victims being compensated by their actual violators.
I don't know of anybody who opposes that.
The original victims were never compensated (through no fault of their own). A debt is a debt and America owes Freedmen/Descendants of American Slavery.

Will extensive DNA testing be involved? It would have to be. Also this would be the same as the African who sold the slaves in the first place and monetarily gained to now 2 people who were never slaves getting paid for the ones that were. Wow, that's sick. Perspective🤨

40 acres and a mule was NOT an attempt at reparations. It was proposed as a temporary measure to allow the millions of newly freed slaves to FEED themselves following Sherman’s march to the sea.

But Cali did have slaves about 2000 and a harsher fugitive slave act then the federal governments version. So what’s up with that?
@@dsnaps12but every state had a fugitive slave law it was part of the comprise between northern and southern states or in this case free and slave. But still California did not have slaves and the 2000 that came here were not recorded by the state and illegally brought. Those slaves were also used in the gold rush where many of them were able to buy their freedom with the gold they found and after they were freed stayed panning for gold. Here’s an excerpt from the California constitution
"...Neither Slavery nor involuntary Servitude, unless for the punishment of crimes, shall ever be tolerated in this State."

It hurts my brain when I hear these uneducated takes its almost like people dont give af about the proof & studies they just dont want to have to actually compete with blk Americans on a fair playing field.

The commission was comprised of all blacks and one Japanese-American man.
If we give reparations to African-Americans we will also need to pay off Native Americans, Mexicans, Chinese (remember the coolies on the railroad?), and Japanese-Americans.
In 1988 President Reagan paid reparations to the Japanese American survivors of Executive Order 9066.
Tell them to get in line and make their own claims..dont leach off this just because you see blk people getting something.

I believe people are find with paying Reparation, as long as, it’s not going to American Freedmen. Example: Asian and pacific islands got Reparations, in the amount of 50 million dollars and “hate crimes” law, knowing American Freedmen are the most hated race in this country. We have people of all races who don’t have a problem with Reparations, but when you say for American Freedmen that’s when you start hearing, not my tax dollars, slavery was a long time ago, we didn’t have slaves, do you know any slaves, just anything off the top of there head. Let me say something, this country was built off the backs of slaves, so now it’s time to pay, the debt that’s owed to American Freedmen. If that not the problem then, make it make sense.
