- On Jan. 31, 2024, California lawmakers introduced a first-in-the-nation reparations package. The set of bills aims to reverse the damage done by centuries of racist policies towards Black Americans.
Before the set of bills were introduced, the State of California put together a task force that looked into what form reparations would be considered, how expansive it would be, plus how to move forward with implementing them - if it gets to move forward.
The statewide task force submitted an extensive report with a list of recommendations.
Some areas the report plans to address are:
who would be eligible
form of payment
how California plans to pay
what programs will be recommended to address slavery's long-lasting damages

It's not a big conversation when it comes to any other people done wrong to receive reparations. Why are every other group of people putting in their advice and ideas. We do not need it. 20:17 California tribes are consistently working to get the treaties to be properly acknowledged. For educational purposes and for people who don’t know, treaties are not reparations. The legalities surrounding California Mission Bands and all the rest of the tribes, state and federally recognized haven’t had any kind of formal reparations in the manner that is being presented in this story.
It is certain the focus of this story is on reparations for African American people, and since the conversation includes land, the intersection of indigenous peoples of the area may need to be included as part of the conversation.
By the way, San Diego is land of the Kumayaay (beautiful people by the sea).
From a philosophic standpoint can you ever put a price on, or should you put a price on, the wrongs of the past that no one committed that is living today? Recognition seems like a good thing. Reparations is a head scratcher. Langston Hughes has some interesting things to say about this.

If its not an issue with the Native Americans the Jewish people from the holocaust that took place in Europe from the Japanese that was held in encampments during World War I then it shouldn’t be an issue with foundational black Americans, who built this country to be compensated by the form of reparation cash payments either.
I think reparations shouldn't be about giving individuals money, it should consist of laws, opportunities, business loans, equality.

There are many people who have been enslaved that are not black people. However the black community seem to be the only one who have not been able to succeed with their current abilities.. Maybe offer them all free college education as reprarations making is an opportunity to better themselves...

Being enslaved and being stripped of who you are is two totally different things. It's systemic here in America unlike other countries.
Every other community is given money
1) Name the other people that were enslaved in America
2) If you can name these people how many of their towns, cities, communities were burned down, flooded, made into parks, highways paved through then on top that laws were enacted to stymie the growth of said people.
3) What is the percentage of people going to college 90%, 75%, anything under 50% should not be part of reparations. Just cut the check and let me make the decisions.
4) If you can't answer the first two questions stay on the sidelines and be quiet.

Something to consider for sure. But the redress has to occur at some point, the sooner the better for the entire country. Half the issues we have are from lack of governmental accountability and correlating action. This would 100% be positive, even if it took a bit to ease initial discomfort the country would be better for it in the long run. Trust.
For real reparations: they identify an actual victim of the offense in question.
They specify the abuses and damages.
They assign a dollar amount for their compensation.
They pay the victim.
If the victim is deceased; they identify the closest living legal heir and pay them.
What is the name of the slave that you are trying to collect the unpaid reparations for?
Most African Americans can trace back to those grands above them. Slave owners were businessmen, they kept records and had insurance with the likes of Wells Fargo/Wachovia etc. That's how they received reparations from the US Gov't in the 1860s.
Only discrepancy is the the wrongs in this country didn't just disappear when the slaves were freed. Even the Civil rights act didn't occur til 1964, we're barely 60yrs from then. If you care to research, California State submitted a full analysis last June. The information is freely available.

The beginning of repairing this country as a whole has to start from somewhere. Reparations are owed to the descendants of channeled slavery and the harsh treatments and unfair practices that are still taking place. Moving forward can only be an effective solution.

Demanding reparations for long past damages to ancestors (slavery) is stupid and unwise.
The statute of limitations has been long expired; slaves and slave owners are long, long dead.
There was a limited time after the Civil War to demand legitimately for reparations for freed slaves from slave owners. OK, expropriate the wealth of the former slave owners and transfer said wealth to the freed slaves. History is tragic. The Civil War wiped out utterly the wealth of 99% of the former slave owners and many former slave owners were not land owners. Post-Civil War there was little to distribute to former slaves because nearly all southerners (Black, White) became destitute from the war. Who benefitted (financially, property-wise, wealth-wise) from the Civil War? Answer: the Northerners and they were not slave owners.
Booker T. Washington (former slave) wrote about former slaves helping out their former owners who fell on hard times. Should said former slaves DEMAND reparations instead of helping the former owners? The slave revenge movies are popular today (2024 AD).

There is an asymmetry. I am sure you are very eager to collect what is owed to your dead parents. Even if the debt is owed only to your dead great-great-grand parents. Underlying this eagerness is greed. This asymmetry makes one blind to the other party. You are not the sole party in society. Others (the other party) are also part of society. Question rephrased: Should the other party suffer for the sins of their dead parents? Should the other party pay off the debts of their dead parents?
The issue of reparation is often linked to that of justice. What is justice? Justice can defined thus: Justice is the ethical, philosophical idea that people are to be treated impartially, fairly, properly, and reasonably by the law and by arbiters of the law, that laws are to ensure that no harm befalls another, and that, where harm is alleged, a remedial action is taken - both the accuser and the accused receive a morally right consequence merited by their actions.
Justice. When you go to court, you do not determine what Justice is. The Judge, the Court, the Jury decide what is Justice for you. You may not be satisfied with the Justice but if you want to stay a citizen in good standing with society, you have to ACCEPT the Judgement. What you are seeking is not so much Justice but Satisfaction. Satisfaction has more in common with Retribution than with Justice. Yes, you can appeal again and again and again and again. You just become a vexatious litigant and your standing in society diminishes. You become a liability, not an asset to society.
Think of the Bible as a collection of writings by the Ancients Sages, not so much the Word of God.
Deuteronomy 15 : 1 = At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts.
Comment: The above verse refers to you who want reparations. If reparations is debt, cancel the debt. What is your valuation of the concept of "statute of limitations"?
Deuteronomy 15 : 3 = You may require payment from a foreigner, but you must cancel any debt your brother owes you.
Comment: Who is supposed to pay this "reparation"? Which entity is supposed to pay this "reparation"? Do you consider this entity to be a foreigner or a sibling?

@@ca_quixote Nothing, so therefore I don't support giving money to that cause either. In the end, what I think is right to do doesn't really matter, as politician's will do what politicians will do for the vote that will keep themselves working. So, we'll just see how it all turns out.
But if the shoe was on the other foot I'd have no hesitation to support yt ppl. Especially if your ancestors bodies were turned into purses and family heirlooms after being brutally unalived at picnics, having them h*ng in the background of pictures with whole families children and all in the foreground. Or if hundreds of their successful towns and businesses b*rned down, inspired by economic fear and jealousy. Or government experimentation done for decades inserting syph*l*s into your community. Or flooding your low income areas with dr*gs and g*ns via f*deral agencies, items that their general population could never have produced or aquired without control over the border or legal system. If the shoe was on the other foot and any of these things went unnoticed or unrecognized by the larger population and instead they decided to pretend none of it happened and not right the wrong, I'd for sure be there as a fellow citizen to support you.
