- I walk through the process of changing and installing your reverse lockout and shift knob on a Subaru BRZ, Scion FRS, or Toyota 86.
You can find the reverse lockout and shift knob that I bought right here:

Ive heard alot of people say "expect to rip the boot when dropping the transmission", however thats because they never take the reverse lockout off. Knowing this will save me from ruining my boot when i rebuild my clutch.
Nice I have a WRX this is one of the only videos that came out clean....everyone else has the threads showing
I found this very helpful. I have a 2011 Kia Optima with 6 speed manual transmission & I want to put a custom knob on her. By myself. Thank you for sharing this.
I’m doing the same to my BRZ and your video helped me a lot... Thanks 🙏🏼 😊
Glad it helped!
Thanks man very helpful
Awsome! Thanks for the help! Doing it this weekend! Hopefully comes out just as good
Nice! Glad to hear!
Just did it and wanted to say thanks
Glad the video helped!
I have something blocking the reverse lock out from coming off the stick. I tapped out the pin like needed and when I lift up on the reverse lock out, its too wide to go over what seems to be a threaded attachment the person who owned the car before me added for his katana shift stick. I don't even know what tool to use to get it off..
Thanks bro
It very hard
But I can handle it very happy 😂
To make pin easier to go back in use a correct size drill bit as a pilot tool to line up the holes and grab the roll pin in vise grips to just start it. Then use giant size channel locks to squeeze the pin back in (tape or rag to protect sleeve. I wouldn't be hammering on the shifter, ever. Same thing with pin removal push the roll pin through a small 1/4" drive socket and maybe a blunted 8D nail. I am going to be making a new shift knob and that lock out sleeve on my lathe, manual machining.
Nice
Would I need that if I want to change my shift knob to a aftermarket one? I have a 2019 Toyota 86 automatic however
The automatic won’t need the reverse lockout. You can just change the shift knob and be fine.
So the M/T BRZ has reverse lock out boot? I have a A/T 86 and it doesnt have one. I bought a new knob and it doesnt fit in the screw thread (thread is too small, i think its 8×1.25. The knob i bough is a 10x1.25 i think). Do i need to buy a reverse lockout boot?
You don’t have a reverse lockout with the automatic. It is only on the manual.
You need adapter which is basically two nuts
so i just did this but i can’t go back in reverse for some reason, any advice?:/
Only thing I can think of is if you took the pin out while it was not in reverse. you wouldn’t have been able to get the pin back in though
Mine didn't even have a pin!!!! Wtf
Wait.. mine wasn't in reverse, so did something fall through?
He literally said in the video to put it in reverse so the pin cant fall of :( I hope you could after a year fix it :)
@@georgepapasgr nah it was there all along
My screw driver wasbt big enough to poke the pin through
It went in between lolll
@@bond3161 ohhhh hahaha
@@georgepapasgr even if it falls.. it doesnt fall all the way
You can get two screw driver or something to pinch it together and drag it back up by the sides
Dont ask me how i know
@@bond3161 hahaha seems like someone had the experience already :)
Im scared to ruin something 😅 does the pin like click into place? Or do you just have to put it back and hope it works? 🥸
Once you get the pin back in you just check to make sure the reverse lockout is engaging. It wasn’t too difficult.
