    Cool review, but you may wanna check out a different song, Travis didn’t write Dammit! It was written by Scott Reynor, blink’s old drummer

    • @Sk8rocka
      @Sk8rocka 5 лет назад +39

      Travis wrote the current iteration. Listen to Scott's pattern, and then Travis's pattern. Completely different approach. Travis accents the guitar riff while Scott syncopates around it. If you can't hear this, you're not playing attention to the subtleties of composition. Not to mention the triplet fills, break at "he fucked her" and various other changes.

      Blink created the wave for NFG... Bowling for soup was after nfg had mainstream success. This dude can drum... But doesn't know much about the generations and how it went down. Oh well.

      Inappropriate Content yes, but the version on the album is still Scott. The version widely played is still Scott.

    • @dudeane
      @dudeane 5 лет назад +5

      Inappropriate Content even then, he wasn’t one of the original composers of a song. He came in after Dude Ranch, there’s only so much he can do, he’s still operating off of what Scott did.

      His technique absolutely contributed to his wrists he has stated that in interviews pills could add to that. He plays a lot more than most any drummer not just in blink so even with perfect technique he’s still gonna have issues. Look at some pics of his fingers missing skin and bleeding I mean come on you gotta be crazy to think his playing doesn’t fuck his wrists up. Secretary’s get carpal tunnel from using a keyboard every day. My grandma got arthritis in all the joints in her fingers from playing piano 70 years.

    2 things
    1)Now that you point out the technique I cant unsee it.
    2) thats a Scott Raynor drum composition. You should do anthem(enema), first date(take off your pants and jacket), or violence(blink 182). Those are the three big travis albums and a decent song for him from each one.

    To all the people saying "Travis didn't write this song, Scott did"
    Travis has written the current iteration of the song, where he accents the guitar riff rather than Scott's syncopated approach. Scott also played sixteenths on the hats and a different groove in the chorus.
    Not to mention the triplets fills and the break at "he fucked her" which travis also wrote.

    I would really love for you to do another one, this is one of the simplest, easiest, most boring songs (drumwise) of blinks catalogue, Travis doesn't shine at ALL, what's interesting about Travis' drumming is when he mixes up beats and rythms that are not usual in pop-punk music. Off the top of my head, some examples would be Anthem pt 2, Stockholm Syndrome, Down, Always, and of course Dysentery Gary, though I'm not sure where to find a live version of that, but all the others you can find decent live versions of. There is a reason so many people idolize Travis, and it's NOT his stick twiddling, his tattoos or his appearances in magazines, it's because he is an insane drummer.

  • @dubay45
    @dubay45 5 лет назад +8

    I'm a huge blink fan and a marching drummer myself. I completely agree with the technique. It all stems from the style of music. The louder you play the higher go the stick heights, and the higher the heights the more arm you use (as opposed to wrist and fingers). Blink actually had to cancel some shows because Travis had blood clots in both arms. Travis is such a great writer and orchestrator though and he can still play with the best of them.

      Travis Barker isn't playing it at a faster tempo in this video. He's also playing it at 8th notes rather than 16ths which is harder in the original. Not to take away from Travis Barker though, he used to play 16th notes but he's getting old and there's the addition of the plane crash and the blood clots in his wrists.

    The thing is Travis was in the marching band, and that's why he grabs like that and apparently that's the most comfortable grip for him. Grab the sticks tightly and not having a gap between thumbs and index fingers. I used to be a huge Travis fan when I was a kid, because I thought he was cool looking, fast and hard hitter, thus I thought "he must be the best drummer in the world". He was the reason I learned to play drums. I started copying him, his gesture, his grip, how he hits the snare, hi hats, basically everything except his fashion. and you know what? it hurt my wrists so bad. Simply didn't work for me. and then at some point I came across on Jared Falk and Jojo Mayer's video on YT, totally changed my style and no pain anymore. My point is, what's best for doesn't always work on someone else and so the opposite.

    Everything he plays is fresh and creative. While most of drummers have a focus on speed, technique and rhythm. Travis has that plus creativity, freshness and massive songwriting skills. Can't think of a drummer that shows so many patterns. A new drumming lesson can be found in songs like Adam's Song, Anthem Part II, Down, Wishing Well, 155, Anthem, The Fallen Interlude, Always, Kaleidoscope, Pretty Little Girl, Long Lost Feeling, Los Angeles, Watch The World, Cat Like Thief...and could continue on and on. Blink 182 is so great thanks to Travis creativity plus Tom and Mark enjoyable and relatable compositions.

      It's flashy to anybody in the audience who isn't a drummer and doesn't really understand what you're doing.
      I'm also a gigging drummer so trust me, nearly anything that isn't just doing a straight rhythm is a flashy trick to the audience, and like the video creator said, you're there to entertain and put on a show.
      So it's a simple trick, but you should do it if there's a song you can easily put it in to, the audience loves it.

      @@JunkdrummerTV Trust me, there is no back-sticking on the hi-hat. Play the video @ 0.25x speed and you'll see. It's definitely flashy, but no stick trick. What he does is he swings his arm around in a circle before each hit, it's one of his signature moves that he probably came up with by watching Pete Townshend do his signature ''windmill'' move on guitar.

    The weird thing about travis is non-drummers love him because he’s flashy and has a super unique style. Drummers (and other musicians alike) usually don’t like him because of the genre(s) he plays Or they maybe don’t give the proper credit where it’s due. Me, however, am a drummer and huge fan! That guy is so technically advanced, it’s sad he doesn’t get the recognition deserves. I’ve seen him live about 4-5 times and I’ll notice a gospel style chop or a time signature manipulation and it blows my mind! One tour, he broke his right foot so he did everything (even the fast punk beats and mike portnoy style riffs) with his left foot on the slave side of a dbl kick pedal........ didn’t miss a beat. So awesome

  • @Gitarrist85

    The wrist clicky thing can be unrelated to his playing. Like 18 years ago, I was in third grade, so everyone was like 8-9 years old. And I had a friend that did that sometimes. Not a musician, nor a sports guy. Just your usual elementary school kid. I remember him trying to explain to me how he did that. I can't remember fully now as it was almost 20 years ago, but he said something about "locking in" his middle finger in an extended kinda way while throwing his wrist back over and over 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Travis is a very technically proficient drummer. There are several videos of his demonstrating great technique. Part of being great at something is mastering the book and then throwing the book out the window. This is the same in a lot of skill sets. Some of the best people in any field, by the book, aren't doing it right but that doesn't mean they haven't mastered the "right" way. The right way isn't always the best way. He is a drummer, a musician, an artist, but moreover, he is an entertainer. Everything he does is entertaining.
