Your videos have always helped me get to the next level with skateboarding. I remember being at a skatepark with an older skater who mentioned how much your videos helped as well!! Thank you for guiding all of us through this long journey of riding!!
i really like how you break down the unconscious things we do while skating. thinking about center of gravity, how to shift your weight, how the upper body moves. these are super important steps to better self reflect and improve faster. now i really want to analyse my own tricks again. still waiting on my new board to arrive though...
ah thank you! I'm happy to hear that. I love thinking about this stuff and trying to figure out what might be happening. I think it's a learn-able skill too. I'm definitely getting better at it as I skate. Hope your new board arrives soon! 🙌
WOW! You landed some super advanced tricks and it's incredibly inspiring that you did that with only 3 years skateboarding! Heel flip and M80!?!?!?! You may have broken the world record for fastest progress to heel flip. 👏👏👏
ahh thank you! The M80 was such a magical land for me. It was one of the tricks that made me want to freestyle in the first place. Amazing to finally land one 🙈
thank you soo much! you are the best in breaking down tricks. there are so many skate tutorials on YT but they are all the same and miss key things like this
I also have this "arm-problem" while trying to ollie higher...i'll try out your technique next time !! Thanks a lot for sharing and explaining it so well, Sarah! I guess it'll help a lot!
I had to look up Norman Woods, but I'm glad I did! What a good find. Thanks 🙌 He had some awesome thoughts on balance in general--exaggerating movements as a beginner. Definitely agree with that.
the stoke was beyond real. The M80 was one of the tricks that made me want to learn freestyle in the first place. Very stoked to have gotten one 😃 so, thank you!
Sarah thanks for another amazing and legitimately helpful video. I've been working on my jumping at the gym for the last few weeks and definitely needed a video like this. This technique has been immensely helpful for my jumping and feeling confident. I've landed more tricks than ever, started landing 5050s consistently, and landed my first 2 fs shuvs. I want to add something here - I don't think it's your actual arms that are making as much of a difference as your shoulder muscles. When I bring my arms up and out slightly behind me as you instruct in this video, I noticed that my shoulder muscles feel "activated". Lifting my arms directly to the sides or in front of me does not activate my shoulder muscles in the same way. And I think the same way as when your core is tight and feels activated, and this gives you the upper body stability/strength/control to pull your legs up, activating your shoulder muscles in this way helps you generate upward momentum using your arms, your shoulder muscles being activated helps to pull up your torso, and then your core, and then your legs. I think this is why some skaters with a lazier style where they don't lift up their arms as much are still able to jump and do their tricks just as effectively, because the actual control is coming from the shoulder muscles and not necessarily the arms.
That's awesome! And definitely! I can see that. You're spot on about once you get the strength and technique, the movement can be more and more subtle. However, I'm actually leaning in the other direction of your hypothesis right now(but not because I disagree. I totally agree!). The more I work on this new technique, the more I've started using my hands to get a good swing and it's helping me immensely--especially with rotating tricks. Because my shoulder movement is often stopped short and doesn't follow through...so, I imagine it's the exaggeration and extra little boost in strength and momentum I get from extending the movement all the way to lead with my hands, but it's helping me get a much better reaction from my upper body in general! And hopefully I can make a video about this soon too! To explore together 😃
@@SarahParkMatott I think we're both kind of circling around the same thing :) While in my "testing" of this theory I'm finding I don't need to actually use my arms as much as I originally thought, purposefully using them DOES definitely help follow through and get the full range of motion, and so I have definitely been exaggerating my arm motion to keep everything else consistent, if that makes sense. I think when beginners, myself included, try to use their arms initially, they just swing them as hard as they can thinking it will generate the most upward momentum. I guess where I'm kinda leading to is using my arms in a very controlled manner.
Oh that's an interesting input on arm "swings". I am currently in the "ollie-throw-arms-sideway-and-up" phase from the previous "no-arms-phase" mainly to make sure that I don't turn my shoulders. Need to try that and also pay attention to other skaters!! Thank you Sarah! Also good input on where to put the weight (shuv it) - and your fakie big spin looked sooooooo effortless!! And aaaaaaah the heelflip - wohooooo - aaaaawwwww I was sitting here watching and was soooooooooo happy for you!!!! Keep on shredding!!
Right? I did that for so long 😂 Totally know what you mean. Also, big thanks! Adjusting my weight forward has helped me for soooo many of my tricks. It's amazing I didn't try it earlier. It was an adjustment in the beginning but overall great for me. Appreciate the virtual cheers!! 🙌 Let's both keep pushing!!
never really thought about the arms going back but i have noticed i do throw them back natrually, really does help but about putting the weight in the center is really good idea never thought about it that way, i will try that today, thanks!
such a joy every1 of your videos !!! Fixing my arms also helped me alot with my ollies especially getting down squat letting them deadhang i used to be stiff with my arms alot still am im working on it.
Your ollies are looking really nice. I'm on a grind to learn the trick rn, to hopefully 'unlock' all other flip tricks since I'm obsessed with them. And I must say, your progress is very inspiring to look at. Thank you for videos like this.
thank you Bruno! They definitely go back and forth session to session still, but slowly getting better! 100% help with the other flip tricks. So, keep pushing! 🙌
This video is probably the best skating tip, I used this technique today and it worked so good! Also you should make a video talking about your set up I’m interested!!!
ah that's awesome! Happy to hear that 😃 I've made a couple videos about the set ups I ride. The problem is me switching too often haha Maybe I should put together a playlist 🤔
@@SarahParkMatott You’re so cool! And I feel you there I often change my set up too but lately I’ve just been trying to stick with one lol and okay imma definitely check out those videos!
I am so glad you can confirm that. I had this issue with my front shuv as I am used to regular pop shove it, I couldn't center my weight and center of gravity on the board. My only solution was to turn a little my shoudlers to have a okay-ish front shuv. But then I looked a video about Tiago Lemos doing it and he actually throw his hands like you said. Since I am doing it like this, I had really good front shuvs. I am trying to apply it to other tricks but it's hard to rework them.My ollies are more steady and high with this technique but others tricks....urgh still need to work on it. Anyway keep thoses videos coming it's so refreshing because there are a few that talks about it (except Norman Woods) the upper body is really important and I am starting to realize it a lot now
right? After realizing it, every pro I see...they do it. I wish I was paying attention to that before 😂 stoked you enjoyed the video and are seeing similar patterns! Hope you get used to it soon. I landed my best FS shove it today with this arm technique too (along with a new foot technique). But I think the arms brought it together.
Totally agree with the arm swing, I've noticed it in a lot of pros for many years! I think in addition to stopping you from jumping toeside, it also sort of flattens your upper body parallel with the ground/board, so you have more space to pull the knees up and still keep your center of gravity over the board and your feet.
Congrats on the M80. I’ve been thinking about my shoulders/upper body more since November. Too much for me to cover in a YT comment, but definitely something that’s often overlooked and should probably be considered. ✌️😊
It is very effective to teach specifically from the perspective of casual skater and not professionals. Recently, I;ve been concerned about upper body, but thank you for the good advice. 😄😄
from my ollie, always think to any high object ex. ledge, obstacle keys are 1.how hard and how fast you pop the tail if you pop it hard but your toe still stick with the tail it wont lift up 2.the rhythm, as you pop you have to shift your weight as high as you want and the make sure your front foot meet the nose at the top height 3.dont tilt your head/body down(on the front) too much it will pull your bodyweight down
I'd like to boost that #1, because that's something I've struggled with for a long time. I end up just adjusting my timing to try and give the board a little extra time to come back up to my back foot. But, you're totally right. If I had a slightly snappier pop, it'd come right back up to meet my foot. And it certainly does when I get a good snappy pop. Great detail! 🙌
thanks for always being around for the discussion! I definitely agree the ninja kick--ie pushing the nose forward is the real key. But, this jump technique has just made the whole motion more controlled. Less back and forth lean too. The more I do it, the more I see it helping in subtle ways. Stoked I found this!
This sounds like me. I've practiced my jump technique stationary doing my arms going behind me (I call it Russian technique since Russian front flips are done that way) however muscle memory is a thing, so when I put my brain towards tricks (especially rolling) I'll go back to old habits. Although, I believe arms throw in front may assist bs turning tricks, and thrown behind for fs because of where it puts your weight. Been a while since I've skated, so take what I say with salt
oh no, I believe you. After filming this, I was at the gym doing some stationary jumps--practicing this jump style but with 180s in mind, and I think it helps. I think I still focused both arms back though for the BS 180, but I'll keep that in mind. A good thing to think about. Excited to be re-learning the 180s now that I have this technique! 💪
@@SarahParkMatott I think it may be true because I fs 180 really well, and I treat it like leaning back into a seat and pulling my legs around. Bs 180 I stink at lol. I lean too much toeside
@@kylespevak6781 ahh! I actually remembered why I was still putting my arms back with BS. I was leading those jumps with my back shoulder above the popping foot. Not my front shoulder 🤔 The whole concept opens up a ton of avenues to experiment. I can totally see how it helped your FS 180 now that Ive tried one with this technique. Really wish I had heard of it sooner 😭
@@SarahParkMatott I don't know why, but fs 180 came so natural to me. Outside of bs shuv, it's one of my consistent tricks. Funny enough, fs shuv is so weird to me. I treat it like fs 180 with a sex change back the way I came. It's the only way to keep the board under me a bit
@@kylespevak6781 ahh the mental gymnastics 😆 I love that about skating. Sometimes, the frame you look at the trick through can help so much. That’s awesome that helped your fs shove it
I natural throw my arms back when I Ollie. I know this because I had pain on my rear of my shoulder not sure what the front arm does. I mostly focus on the timing of my pop and dragging far enough that I grap the scoop of the nose. Then I also make sure my rear foot needs to come way up. That's what always lags. My shoulder pain is from posting my hand out when I fall. Just now I wear elbow pads and just go with it. Now that I make sure I ninja my nose forward my ollie's are looking clean. Also I now put my front foot only about 1 inch back behind the front bolts. Someone should me I was randomly riding with. Also when I Ollie up a curb don't even think too much . The two things that matter the most your body is rising high enough to be up there and your tail foot clears. I just been grinding it out too. Anyways skating is a adventure to me. Thanks for your in-depth videos. 👍🤙
Thanks for always being here for the discussion! I totally agree the real key is in that front foot ninja kick--ie pushing the nose forward. But, the more I do this technique on the jump, the more I'm seeing the subtle benefits for me. I just seem a lot more controlled. it's awesome! Wish I noticed it earlier
I was practicing nollies today and was trying to figure out how to get my arms out and your vid popped up once I opened RUclips. Gonna give them Naruto jumps a go tomorrow! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 And solid stuff on the heel flip and M80! 🔥🔥🔥
Hey thanks for this in-depth video. I need to get my arms under control... and this video is going to spur me on again. I was working on it all last summer and then lost discipline lolz..... anyway one thing I noticed about arms... when I do backside 180s or backside ollie over a hip my arms follow the same pattern as pros (the way their arms go backwards and then kind of over their heads like butterfly stroke). I was thinking the opposite of you, that when you jump forward it makes your arms go backwards to counter balance... but I never thought that maybe its the opposite problem (as you highlighted). Thanks
it's funny how the little details affect your tricks, rights? I definitely feel this arm pattern helping me more and more. So, I hope it can work for you too! 🙌
@@jforbsie thanks! I think this one is already gone. At least, I cannot see it. I’ve deleted and reported a ton this morning! Really appreciate the help though. 🙏
Yeah, arms swinging back is something I did without trying to, and definitely what the majority of skaters do. My guess for the reason is the direction of force it generates down into the ground. If the arms swing in front of the body, it makes the feet push down into the ground diagonally behind the skater, which would make it really hard to pop the tail straight down. One more thing I would add to the arm motion is how it should move down after swinging up, kind of like a bird flapping it's wings up, then down. This counteracts the knees tucking up and lets you suck up the board high.
Ah, that's awesome! I wish I had noticed it sooner. But i totally agree it makes a lot of sense now that I'm thinking about it. And the flap down is a great detail. I've been doing a similar move in the gym--set up like a tricep dip, but practicing sucking my knees up. I can totally see how those opposing motions could make that pull up easier! 🙌
Good to keep in mind, i'm just learning that I've been crouching with my shoulders forward, as opposed to them turning forward in the air. I've just been focusing on putting my back arm to the outside of my knees when I crouch, as opposed to inside, not sure why putting it inside felt more natural, but it's always nice when you finally figure out where a problem is
I think that's why experimenting is so important. Sometimes we can get the same results with slightly different techniques as long as they share the same core features. Our bodies and tendencies are a little different. I tend to favor my natural movement tendencies first and then see where the small changes are that I could make to improve. This is a good example of that not working though. Because this was not an intuitive move for me, and it's made a huge difference.
That looks a lot more comfortable. That M80, heelflip, and those fakie bigspins looked especially good. I can't think about my arms when i skate. There's usually a lot to focus on and if i get the balance right, they behave themselves. I usually just think about one or two things on any given trick. For ollies i didn't even bother leveling them out fully for a while, since i was so focused on popping hard and not stomping them. Then once i could ollie like that automatically, i started focusing on my front foot and leveling them out more.
that's an awesome technique! I do that too when learning tricks. I love going into the small details and just drilling that before moving on. But, shoulders are up next for a lot of them 😂 Glad that technique works so well for you though 🙌
it'll be stoke af when you 'discover' the discipline of downhill/freeride skating on down the road; once you meet the people & get skills you'll realize where the cool skaters wind up ... your content on look learning to standup checkslide will be dope & detailed .... ( I like your vids ...you helped improved my techsliding practice n technique+ arm usage 🙏🏻)
Coming back to skating in general, i never seen anybody else talk about the upper body movement. Interesting! My ollies go back rather than forward so maybe i gotta lean a little more and/or have my arms swing forward instead of behind me?
Ah thanks! Glad you found it interesting 😃 I think these are the most fun topics haha and that could be it! Id take a video and see if your body is moving back or the board is! Or both. That can be the best guide. When I was learning kickflips I thought the board was going back, but it turned out I was leaning wayyy too forward. My body was jumping forward without the board. Some side shot video can help look at that though. Or you can always try blind 💪 just adjusting front and back to see if anything helps or gets worse
Have you seen Dan Corrigan's video on how to ollie higher? He talks about doing more of the judo kick than a cannonball jump. That's something I want to work on more. Lately, I've been starting my ollies with my arms down and then raising them when I jump. No idea if it's a good technique or not. I used to be able to clear 5 boards interlocked vertically when I was a teenager. Now, I'm lucky if I can clear a foot jumping over something. Not sure what my technique was back then. Being 30 lbs lighter probably helped. I think the judo kick thing was less back then, because boards didn't have huge noses at the time.
I haven't, but I'll have to check it out. I always love hearing people's perspective on it. It makes sense. Maximizing height with the ollie comes from pushing the nose forward and all the subtle bits linked to it like timing, jump etc. So, I can see where judo kick might come in there 😂
@@SarahParkMatott Lately, I've been ollieing starting with my arms down, or at least low. I raise them some when I ollie, but, not a lot. I kind of want to focus and control which variables I'm changing. Also, while practicing manuals, I've been keeping my arms down. I think it's better for getting the body's overall posture and position over the board. I want to get space walks down
@@idmhead0160 I did. But, all I could think about was Rodney Mullen. I’ve watched a lot of his 80s freestyle comp runs, and the way he ollies makes that whole concept that Dan talks about pretty obvious. A lot more obvious than modern skaters 😂
This actually big because I’ve been struggling with getting my Pop-shuv it/shuv-it consistently and I didn’t know how to fix it. Same thing with getting my rolling Ollie’s higher
Another excellent video about something hardly anyone talks about. I've been on and off the board for 20 years and have a pretty good ollie when I'm feeling nimble. But I've never really known what to do with my arms, and in clips it always looks like I'm holding a torch with my front arm, lol. I feel the pull of gravity more these days, so proper technique is key. I think people often mistake the motion of the ollie with the kind of jump you'd do when dunking (or if you're from Europe, heading a football). But it's really more a sudden compression from the shoulders down and quick sucking up of the feet, and your head might actually be going downward already when you pop the tail. So throwing your arms back like this helps you pull up your feet, if that makes any sense. Keep up the good work Sarah, these videos are top-rate!
Ah, that's a great point Arno! I totally agree. It's something I've come right up against recently when trying to get FS shove its. I noticed that I am jumping "too much," which didn't seem like I'd ever think was possible before. But, I think my feet have been leaving the ground (or near it) too quickly because I'm trying to spring up so quickly. So, learning how to keep low and bring my knees up instead has been and interesting challenge. Since I typically tried to both jump and bring my knees up. Now, I am trying to do just one lol Glad you noticed it too!
never even noticed this until i just looked at a video of me doing an ollie and my my right arm is going behind me and my left arm is going straight to the side! so interesting!
right? I always knew...I just rarely stopped to think about what I could do about it 😂 It's funny after you notice it though. Sometimes you can't unsee it lol

8:46 that M80 was so sick! I've been skateboarding for so many years but I still don't how to do that pivot
There was definitely some luck involved there for that land! But if I could land it, you definitely can! You’ve got so many amazing tricks 💪
I gasped when you just landed that heelflip! What a day for tricks!!! Skill tree leveled up 🙌
I gasped too 😂 Thanks Joce!
That’s awesome that helped your fs shove it
i tried this today and it helped. thanks!
ah, so glad it helped! 💪
yes! Naruto jumps is another great way to think of it 😂 and thank you David!
Thanks
This shows exactly my error compared to a person who can ollie really well... ruclips.net/video/mh0rWI9-Q5c/видео.html
it's funny how the little details affect your tricks, rights? I definitely feel this arm pattern helping me more and more. So, I hope it can work for you too! 🙌
@@SarahParkMatott is this spam (above comment)
@@jforbsie thanks! I think this one is already gone. At least, I cannot see it. I’ve deleted and reported a ton this morning! Really appreciate the help though. 🙏
That was awesome. Love your analysis, I’ll be testing this arm stuff. My shoulders are always causing my Ollie’s to rotate, v annoying
Another great video! The part was when you landed the heelflip! Your expression was great!
My face was incredibly honest 😂
@@SarahParkMatott totally agree. I would have never thought to throw my arms back like that
@@phillipkelley4262 same even after my friend literally recommended it 😂
@@SarahParkMatott 🤣🤣🤣
I first notice this technique on Aaron Kyro and tried it. Felt weird at first but I will try to get used to it.
thanks for making this video its help me alot
Happy to hear that!
@@SarahParkMatott for you to know that im had land pop shovit today by yr videos for about 1 year playing skate haha
I shall give this a go, thanks sensei
Also welcome to the dark side of no helmet
ahh hope it helps a bit Satra! ahhh I know...I've fallen 😂 but...the heat...I can't do it again haha
Or you can always try blind 💪 just adjusting front and back to see if anything helps or gets worse
woah :o trying this after my shift tomorrow !!
I want to get space walks down
@@idmhead0160 spacewalks are a dream 🙈
@@SarahParkMatott Did you have a chance to checkout the Dan Corrigan video on ollieing higher yet?
"It's been a long time since I got 2 kickflips that effortlessly"
A sentence that has never been said by me 😅
it was the first time I had ever said that too 😂
Part 1 = 🤯🤯 mind blown 🤯🤯
did you end up getting a mini version of yuta's board?
Yuta's board is only available in a 7.75! 😃 I guess time will tell if there's a mini in the future though
Highest quality of balance and control the board to leaning toward the board and more versatility of a good rotations and consistent.
never even noticed this until i just looked at a video of me doing an ollie and my my right arm is going behind me and my left arm is going straight to the side! so interesting!
right? I always knew...I just rarely stopped to think about what I could do about it 😂 It's funny after you notice it though. Sometimes you can't unsee it lol
THAT M80 WAS AWESOME 🔥🔥🔥when are you gonna get sponsored by a board company or get wheels?? i need some SPM signatures on my next complete 😭😭
ahhh thank you! I was so stoked on that too 🙈 and I'm honored, but I'd probably have to sponsor myself for that to happen 😂
The topic of weight-shifting with the arms is **HIGHLY UNDER-RATED**
LOL, that ending was abrupt.
Good day indeed! Those pesky appendages are annoying aren’t they?
pesky is a good word for them 😂
