    Being comfortable on your board is top priority. I've found the more comfortable i'm getting on my board the better my ollies are getting. Great video JB.

      Absolutely. But to also to be skating often. Practice your Ollie everyday at different times of the day . So your are used to being on your board. The more you are in the environment of your board, the better.

    • @marsbase3729
      @marsbase3729 2 года назад +5

      @@Dezelbub so true. Also good for getting back into it after you've been away from it for a while. It also helps me to just enjoy being on my board without the frustration of not being able to do a trick as good or easy as I used to. I just start cruising, rolling around carving gradually increasing speed, feeling the weight of my body as a shift side to side, then throw in some light ollies. After linking more consecutive sessions and times when I can't skate, I do some ollies in the grass or in the garage, or in front of the house.
      Then after a few weeks of this my skills and endurance are back up. Also, like JB said, stretching helps big time, I only wish I knew how beneficial stretching is when I first started skating, but since I have been doing it consistently for the last 10 years or so, I've noticed a major improvements in endurance, fatigue reduction and decrease muscle injury and less likely to get muscle cramps. I don't know how much longer I will be able to skate when I get old, but I will keep doing it while I can.

    after 8 months of skating in total and like 6 months of practicing ollies, I am now able to ollie over/on to a curb, its so awesome!
    sadly its winter now and very cold and wet, so I cant skate nearly as much as I´d like, but thanks to your videos I´ve so much to look forward to learn when spring comes around :-)
    keep it up
    btw. for some reason I have an easier time ollying up a curb than off a curb, it really is a pure mental thing :D at first I couldnt even ollie over a tiny stick, cause it was somehow intimidating to ollie over something, even though I wouldve been able to roll over it anyway

      Ayy that's great! I'm on my 5th month skating, and I kinda stopped for about 3 weeks bcus of exam and the skatepark where I usually train ollies, kickturn and so on is closed due to a some construction beside of the park, don't know how long is the construction is gonna be finished, super annoyed bout that. I felt a lil bit demotivated cause of that, but i tried to search some spot and found one more close to my home and definitely gonna go there this weekend lol

    i have a trick for those learning, try to apply pressure on your front foot towards the tip of the nose BEFORE you jump
    like u wanted to slide it up but u press on the grip so hard it doesnt move
    or like u wanted to spread apart your feet but they were glued to the floor
    (im running out of comparison)
    you will feel some tension between your legs like if you had an elastic band between your ankles
    when you pop doing ur board will instantly stick to ur feet
    ofc it's an "exagerated" technique for beginners (u always want to exagerate everything as you begin skating)
    i taught many people to ollie with this tip and they all said it made total sense

    Another awesome instructive video, thanks JB! I learned how to get my board a few inches off the ground when I was 15 or so (around 1985), by doing a "scooping" motion, mainly with my back foot, but not tapping the tail. I thought that was an ollie (I didn't have any videos or instruction). Now all my ollies are "ghost ollies", and I'm basically having to learn a whole new trick (not easy at age 51). Young at heart, so I will try some more with these tips in mind.

    Great vids! I have been skating for over 35 years and am turning 50- I am also pretty involved with the DIY concrete culture…so skating has kind of settled into bowl riding and slash grinds for me. I’m here to say that these videos are AMAZING for BOTH beginners and people like me who have built up certain habits over decades. My wife is 11 years younger and loves street skating…thanks to your videos I have my FS Ollie back!! It’s the “carved on a bank wall” (not the 180) ollie but heading out to mess with backside Ollies today (my white whale). Thanks a ton man! 😎 backyard bowl invite if you ever traveling in southern New Mex!

    okay, I think I will loosen my trucks a bit (I always have some wheelbites) but other skaters also told me to make the trucks a lil bit loose to get more pop. my problem is that I can't ollie straight. always a little bit turning. tried everything to avoid it (back foot on the tail not concave)🤔😑but I will try to check every possible reason mentioned in the video

I'm 47 yrs old I'm tryna get better at skateboarding but obviously it's not very easy anymore bcuz my body doesn't move as easy anymore . Basically restricting me to bein able to only do bowl carving. My kids think I'm the bees knees. I tend to think differently haha I just feel old I guess wat can u recommend so that I can also feel good about my skateboarding?

      I feel you concerns dude! I’m 45 and mostly carve in the bowls. I know I have what it takes to get better but I feel something holding me back a bit. Aging body? Perhaps. A couple weeks ago I clicked as many Ollies I could in my Sunday morning session and I can still feel the ache in my back leg. I’m going to keep my board and shoes in my work truck to try 20 Ollies a day and see what happens, I have a feeling I’m just out of shape and can with practice I can get better ollies. Cheers bud!

    I usually end up turning my board slightly heel side because of my shoulders turning forward just before I pop. It doesn't happen every time, but it's usually when I get either nervous or tired and don't feel confident in my ollie.

    Yo JB such a thorough video about ollies! Any tips on 'holding' ollies in the air for longer? I seem to ground mine too quick!

    • @SkateparkLessons
      @SkateparkLessons  3 года назад +2

      Thanks Ken, Pull your legs up higher under your body, this will typically require more speed and using a ramp helps you understand how the “holding” that you’re referring to works.
      More speed allows for shorter amount of time needed to clear the object. Same as if you run and jump over something.
      I cover these principles in my Better Ollies video. Cheers 💙🛹💙

    • @SkateparkLessons
      @SkateparkLessons  Год назад +3

      Start with using a fence and film yourself so you can analyze in slow motion how your feet move and if your tail is striking the ground when you Ollie , it’s tricky to learn but you can do it 💙🛹💙

    thanks for this video. i´m very curious why it should help to bend down earlier? in another "ollie higher" video the guy (norman woods) said the opposite (don´t stay down forever, bend down deep and spring up as quickly as you can). thanks for your insight

    • @SkateparkLessons
      @SkateparkLessons  2 года назад +2

      This video is for people who need help with fixing or learning their Ollie. Many people don’t bend down deep enough or in time to pop when needed. “Be prepared” so bend down and be ready Just Before you need to pop. You don’t need to bend down way early but you need to find your rhythm of bending down into your powerful pop as one smooth motion 💙🛹💙

    how am I supposed to jump forward/sideways/into the movement? everyone tells me i'm supposed to jump sligthly forwards to improve my ollies, but when I try to think of doing it I just cant figure out how is it physically possible to do that rolling on a skateboard. I practised on the ground and still can't translate it on the board, it just messes my ollies.

    One thing people don't make clear is, don't slam your board down with your foot in the way most people think. That will pinch the tail and nothing will happen. Jump then use mostly your ankle to pop. Your weight has to come off the board in order to actually Ollie.

    Great ollie tutorial! Very few tutorials - if any - talk about the motion of the front leg/knee. For example, at 8:17 it looks like your front knee is moving forward quite a lot, which will leave the front knee "pointing forward", while the front foot is quite "far behind" the knee. Do you actively think about "lifting" the front knee forward rather than lifting it straight up towards your chest?
