Beautiful videos of a beautiful Niva. Really love your videos. An old 1600 like this in this condition is an absolutely dream. Greetings from Germany🇩🇪😊🙋🏻♂️
Good luck with your electric conversion. I own a Miles Electric Minivan that has 72VAC motor and Curtiss motor controller . As you probably know the major cost now of operating an battery powered vehicle are the batteries. Majority of the most efficient vehicles utilize lithium ion batteries for power to weight ratio but I am cheap so I bought some 750ah agm batteries lately at a very good price. They will work nicely for short trips of 50miles or so maybe more on flat ground. With the larger lead acid batteries 80-100 miles , lithium would probably extend that range to 150 miles or so. I am retired electric forklift tech so I am used to working with various types of electric motors and controllers both DC and AC.
That JB Weld will still be holding to cover that hole long after you junk that gas tank. My dad had a truck for 10 years with JB Weld patching a gas tank hole that was quarter size in the tank bottom. We think a piece of ree bar on the highway punctured it.
The car is looking good and it is so unique, a real rarity on the roads. I hope that the fuel tank is vented, or it might collapse if you drive it down to empty.
The engine will die (or the fuel pump will fail at pumping fuel into it) well before that tank implodes... had a Peugeot 207 where they either failed at drilling a vent hole or it got clogged unreasonably quickly on a new car.
Hey mate, speaking from experience with these cars, you'll want to take the old sound deadening bitumen and the insulation layer our and replace it with a modern butyl-based sound deadener and newer insulation foam. It may not be rusty now, but you also won't know until its too late, so i suggest getting to it earlier rathee than later, especially given you hosed out the interior and the water sprayed all over the old mats (which will hold the water and cause rust)
1:47 seeing this I was already suspecting the area around the filler, not sure how you missed that huge hole. 8:12 what the fuuuuuuuuuuuuck.... petrol costs only 46% of what we pay here in NZ!! really?? Anyway watching this I'm feeling much better about my own "elderly car" purchase recently :)
Great little video.. I live in Spain a d have a niva 2121 too, which I’ve used for rallying in North Africa several times. It’s a fantastic machine and I never want to sell it, so maybe an electric conversion is the way ahead?? I’ll watch with interest! Good luck and keep the interesting videos coming 👍
great project. i was gonna do this years ago. i might have a crack at this. that jb weld will last longer than the car. i did my oil cooler radiator with it. the oil is red hot n under around 60psi.
Gidday mate. I used to own a Lada Niva here in the sunny Bay of Plenty. I converted it to LPG which solved the appalling fuel economy of around 18 mpg (UK gallon of 4.5 litres rather than US gallon of 3.8 litres). Let me guess: does your Niva have a fair bit of drive train vibration? I may be able to help. Cheers.
The gas tank area and the central tunnel should be great for holding batteries. Also, you could put a motor in the back axel area and remove the interconnecting drive shafts(RWD). This would create great space up front.
I'd bet that was the sound dampening mat they place on the floor of vehicles to help cut the noise down. They have adhesive on one side to be rolled in place to stick and a plastic or foil top. Looks like whatever kind they used dissolves with gas though. Good luck on the project.
I once had a gas leak in my Polo 86c and I was driving it around smoking one cig after another as i do. Didn't blow up on me but I found out that petrol also corrodes metal when exposed to air. Especially after stripping the paint
In the holes in the bottom of the car - there should have been draining flaps to let the water out (but not in). Now it seems they'll work both ways :D
Just found your channel. I had one of these some years back as an off road toy (they are very competent off roaders) You drove across the USA in it? It is a miracle that you are not deaf 😂 mine was as noisy as hell. I spoke to one guy who had one and had fitted a 2.0 Supermirafiori (sp?) engine in his. Have liked and sub'd
This rust preventive stuff was used only on all soviet EXPORT hand assembly models. On other cars bolts were driven by hammer and never tightened. Uppon arrival all car was taken apart and every bolt tightened.
What is the plus of this car, it is still being produced))) You can buy a new interior trim and it will not differ in any way from the one that has fallen into disrepair!
Our Niva's gas tank/fuel line has a leak and I want to die when it acts up. It's barely leaking fumes hence I haven't actually found it yet. But sometimes when we stop, it's just death. I can't imagine this mess...
Gidday again. Are the Niva's brakes super spongy and no amount of bleeding will firm them up? And are the front brake pads wearing unevenly? It's caused by weird brake safety split system used on the Niva. There is a cure, however the path is not easy....
"I actually fixed something 😮" he says while sitting in his soon to be 2nd EV conversion lmao Do the headlight wipers and sprayers still work? I miss those from my Volvo 😂
From what I remember 2101 had tank in the right section of trunk. Placing tank inside the salon is incredibly unsafe ! Modern manufacturers do not do that. American gasoline are incredibly corrosive since it laced with ethanol ,that why all gas tanks made from plastic( since 1996) since steel tanks will rust. Ethanol attracts water naturally from the air, that is why American EPA demands fuel tanks to be sealed system & modern cars have evaporation emission control system sensors ! That senses vapors of gasoline & ethanol ! Ethanol is substitute for gasoline & energy it contains. 10% ethanol means gasoline contains 10% less energy. reduces fuel mileage by 30 to 40 miles.
I am amazed l had same model Lada it was fun until the slow nosy no 5 gear became to much.l had a priest come to buy but just as he said he would buy on test drive the engine caught fire !He told me it was divine intervention that he should not buy. I traded it in at a caryeard and got twice what l paid just for the querky feeling he got from car. Crazy Russia
Wow, it was a rust stop and antinoise soviet thing. Beware, your car can rusty very quick. The oil tank leaky on all old cars, who just stay on for years.
no lad you fuxed it and ate fush and chups great little cars owned one for 7.5 years but got better fuel consumption than you have change the rims and d tyres to road/sand quiter and get a swingaway for the spare and fit to the rear less gut busting getting the spare out ,,what happened to the russian tool kit was it missing?? any way good luck and cooee cobber
you're lucky this never caught on fire mate!
Just sit back, relax, and have a cigarette. Oh, maybe not.
I think the trunk can be dried with a gas burner.
Jesus ... you drove for so long with the car full of fuel inside the cabin ,you're one determined fella . Brilliant
My father's Volga had persistent gasoline smell inside, the whole family tried to understand where's it coming from and it's a mystery to this day.
Greetings from Russia! I have a Niva produced in 1983. I want to do the same in a few years and I will follow the progress of your work. Good luck!
Just keep in mind, when it comes to electricity, Russia is closer to Europe than to US :)
One more russian subscriber :)
It's amazing that someone in the US likes russian cars. :)
44 years later, this Niva car is still produced without any substantial modification.
same as UAZ 469 (now Hunter) and UAZ 452, amazing time machines
I nearly died when you said ‘let’s see if it fires up!’ 🤣 one spark and..... 🔥

You're on fire! Two episodes in 48 hours :D
Godamnit! I could feel the horrible petrol smell in my living room, watching this!
So looking forward to this series Kiwi EV!
great videos, greetings from Western Australia
One of the advantages of owning russian car - you fill satisfaction after you fix it with your own hands :-)
Cause its pretty easy to do :D
Until you have to do it for the hundredth time. This week.
That JB Weld will still be holding to cover that hole long after you junk that gas tank.

We think a piece of ree bar on the highway punctured it.
You should have pressure tested the fuel tank, but it is excellent you fixed the leak. Good on ya!
Saw you on Transport Evolved...Immediately subscribed :)
That's very kind! Thanks mate!
The car is looking good and it is so unique, a real rarity on the roads. I hope that the fuel tank is vented, or it might collapse if you drive it down to empty.

Love your in enthusiasm.
It leaked every time you used the brakes. They are usualy thirsty ,but this one was extra thirsty
Can't get enough seriously. My childhood back all over again...
Looking forward to watching your road trip West - East when you've got it edited.
I am glad you made it home safely!
You are the right kind of guy for this car! Greetings from Russia.
Can't wait for more episodes

It is so cool to follow you, now I want to get me a Niva :)

A fuel leak will kill your mileage for sure :) Among the other things it might kill.
You gotta get Rob to come help again. He'd be "graceful like a gazelle' getting the engine out like last time.
1:47 seeing this I was already suspecting the area around the filler, not sure how you missed that huge hole.

Just saw the @TransportEvolved episode with you. Nice job!
Cheers, Ben!!

such a nice car, the final result will be so great to see
thank goodness you don't smoke

i watched you previous conversion and i can't wait to watch this one

With meditation and mechanical meddling, smooth cruising may be achieved. The path is not easy. I shall list the steps.
The gas tank area and the central tunnel should be great for holding batteries. Also, you could put a motor in the back axel area and remove the interconnecting drive shafts(RWD). This would create great space up front.
Yes but also, having a 4x4 EV could also be quite fun.
I'd bet that was the sound dampening mat they place on the floor of vehicles to help cut the noise down. They have adhesive on one side to be rolled in place to stick and a plastic or foil top. Looks like whatever kind they used dissolves with gas though. Good luck on the project.
So looks like you made it home ok to Florida. Awesome , and you fixed the gas leak. super.
Weehhh, mad granny used to drive that kind of car for 30 years, its a dream of my father to own this kinf of old school car
You drove THAT cross country!? Holy cow.
I mean, if it survive the wildest of Siberia I'm sure it could survive the wildest of Florida
I was simply referring to a cabin full of gas fumes. He'd need to burn all his travel clothes after the trip.😆
I once had a gas leak in my Polo 86c and I was driving it around smoking one cig after another as i do. Didn't blow up on me but I found out that petrol also corrodes metal when exposed to air. Especially after stripping the paint

I cant wait for the next one.
I'm starting editing tomorrow! I've got 70 GB of video clips to make sense out of... 😄
Just found your channel. I had one of these some years back as an off road toy (they are very competent off roaders)

Have liked and sub'd
Good luck!
Good lad! Looking forward to this series!
You are funny! 😂
And brave!
And a smart man
Man in glad you don't smoke

Hello!
Memories of you cleaning your first conversion; strip it, pour buckets of soapy water and scruba dub dub…
Good work, comrade.
Don't hurt this Lada with electric conversion.
Don't tell other people what to do.
This video isn't visible on your channel? 🤔 Can only see it on the playlist.
Man, this car is in really good condition!
Whole Russia would subscribe and watch you in progress!!
Spasiba!
Nice video! :)
jb weld on a non load baring area of a fuel tank will last for years the older it gets the better it seals
Same as Mark said. Very exiting!
it's a really old lada, if it has a choke
What is the plus of this car, it is still being produced))) You can buy a new interior trim and it will not differ in any way from the one that has fallen into disrepair!
You got another sub from transport evolved.
recall, electricity does not come from batteries...
Nice zero detent angle on the u-joints. Lol
Good thing you don't smoke...
subscribed and the bill is on waiting for the next video - I love That Car - and my dream to convert my car too..
I think I would coat the interior with truck bed liner. It would be incredibly durable.
"I actually fix something" - same as I spoke to myself, because I rarely fix anything that last
Our Niva's gas tank/fuel line has a leak and I want to die when it acts up. It's barely leaking fumes hence I haven't actually found it yet. But sometimes when we stop, it's just death. I can't imagine this mess...
I used to own a Niva, which leaked around the fuel sender on top of the tank. Pull it out and reseal the gasket.
How the h*** did you stick that you must have been high all the way home :-0
Gidday again. Are the Niva's brakes super spongy and no amount of bleeding will firm them up? And are the front brake pads wearing unevenly? It's caused by weird brake safety split system used on the Niva. There is a cure, however the path is not easy....
Did you put the gas cap back on?
well, at least you didn’t smoke in the car 😅
All that way across the US in a mobile incinerator.
"I actually fixed something 😮" he says while sitting in his soon to be 2nd EV conversion lmao
Do the headlight wipers and sprayers still work? I miss those from my Volvo 😂
They still work. At least they were when he drove from Oregon.
great fix , btw u might get a bit of cash back on the engine and parts when u strip it for electric
Good thing you don't smoke... :D
No gas cap?
Why didn’t you by a new one? They are still in production... basically the same car and now with an a/c unit!!! 😂

if you gonna drive it daily record short updates and fixes people gonna watch it i am sub for sure

Petrol for use in U.K.🔥
Can't believe that car is legal to drive in the US.
6:05 And that is how we "detail" a real car!
your car once was red 😄
Wow, it was a rust stop and antinoise soviet thing. Beware, your car can rusty very quick. The oil tank leaky on all old cars, who just stay on for years.

No cigar.
