Ten years ago, this episode inspired me and my friend to go to Vietnam. Just as Jeremy said: It's a fabulous country. It really is.
Wish I could do that lucky guy with the virus around so hard to go anywhere
Glad you liked the country
That’s rad
As a Vietnamese, we are glad that you are able to enjoy the scenery and our country. Thank you for visiting us.
I saw Casualties of War (1989) and Top Gear Vietnam Special (2008). Vietnam is possibly the best Top Gear Episode/Special ever. I just want to see that country in the 2000s again. I feel it'd be too different today.
"It's not a complaint, it's an observation."
- James May 2009
That was funny too
June*
It’s nearly 2008
@@icewallowcome4552 you idiot 😂😂
but a good observation
The girl who started painting everything pink was hilarious.
A girly girl for once

The way he says it is hilarious. So low-key
Can someone explain it to me please I'm not native. I feel stupid :(

This has to be my favourite ever top Gear episode. This or the Botswana special.
what episode and season
+Team Smoke this episode is from season 12 episode 8
TheLoneLocus
The American one is the OG. But Naaaam was beautiful and hilarious 👌🏾
o
This was the only time on Top Gear, and even The Grand Tour, where the trio drove bikes instead of cars. This special has a special place in my heart
6:31, Hammond's and May's emotional looks are amazing.. We really missed you boys..
Kıvanç Y my toughts exactly.. they look.. amazed.
Tell me about it. 2021 and I really miss this
"James and I are doing everything possible to stop them. Please. Don't do this."
hahaha
BlackSpiderPro Wow we watched the same video?!
Morgan Freeman no need to be rude, Morgan.
BlackSpiderPro aha I'm sorry. just a pet peeve of mine when people quote videos.
Morgan Freeman it's to acknowledge an especially funny/remarkable part of a video.
Even after you watch a handful of times you always appreciate the stunning shots the cameramen were able to get. They made incredible productions over the years.
"She's painting everything in the parking lot pink"😂😂😂
+Sgt Robuck I was crying lmao. She just decided everything should be pink.
+Kahlo kahlow ikr hahahahahahah the reaction tho
that was a real classic top gear moment
Sgt Robuck car park the brits don't say parking lot
lmao I am British XD
As much as Jeremy claims he hates two wheeled vehicles, I know for a fact, he was absolutely loving that trip on the moped
Also he lied about having no bike riding experience while in fact he did ride a bike in the 90s, in Vietnam even.
@@duongnhdn i dont think he lied but it is possible to sort of forget i mainly ride motorcycles i have got a full licence i can drive cars too after 4 years of not driving a car i forgot how to drive one my work gave me a work van i was stalling it all over the place after a few hours it did come back to me i had to go to a country lane where no cars ever go there i had to teach myself to drive a car again lol

They tried to buy cars but ‘brought’ bikes
Cross Hammond had me in stitches. *Galleon hit once more* (Sarcastic) "Oh Dear.."
This has always been my favorite special.
The complete 180 that Clarkson goes through.
The complete insanity of the road ways.
Most of all. The amazing views. Just utterly amazing that I am sure television doesn't due it any justice.
This is why I love Top gear with the original James, Richard and Jeremy.
Every time I watch an episode, the moment the first joke cracks. I would be sitting watching the episode, smiling until the whole episode ends.
When I watched this Vietnam Special I literally have a smile on my face while watching the whole episode. Same for the rest of the Episode's this three people presented.
probably the only car show in the world that keeps me smiling and entertained through out the duration of the episode's and specials.
Top Gear is not going to be same unless all 3 of them are in it. And I doubt there are any people out there that can pull off the same entertainment this 3 people can produce :).
If you want a benchmark for a show with a lot of comedy, and entertainment and car reviews full of laugh's.. This is it!.
I love how James may brought with him Darcy whilst swimming to the Bar :D hahaha
+eroOtoko1 I agree :) A Top Gear episode has everything in it, emotion, humour, information and perfection!
Pay the Amazon fee then lol
+Akkarsollum
Amazon fee what now?
Nobody at all in England has heard of "Suiyo dodeshou". It's not well known at all.
They'd been doing various "challenges" for years, from things like taking a car and converting it (badly) for use at sea, and then had challenges based on racing a car v various other modes of transport, to see which is quickest - eg car v public transport on various routes, and the ideas just got bigger, to the point where they'd occasionally become an entire show.
Kane Kure Using a format that someone created a long time ago without knowing that thing existed isn't "copying", not to mention if you go by stealing things or aspects from other shows, I am certain that the show you mentioned wasn't the first of its kind in the world, there might be some indie shows that you are not aware of, because travelling around the world, making challenges, and stuff like that, they are extremely simple things that shouldn't be copyrighted. Just like you wouldn't copyright a whole fantasy/FPS/W.e genre and that's because every person is different. Unless they are copying their interactions from the show which you mentioned and it's clear that they're copying, I don't think you have a place to be pissed off at them, simply because they are them, and that "Suiyo Dodeshou" show had its own personalities.
Not to mention that copyright doesn't work like that. If you want to make sure that certain formats are not copied, you need to register a copyright first and then you need to defend that copyright. If that is not done, then you will lose the right over that copyright. And again, top gear and now Grand Tour isn't a plain copy of the show you mentioned.
When he shoved the masts into the ceiling fan, I laughed harder than I ever have in a good month.
yeah and i think it was completely fake, saw it coming a mile away when he was first working on it I could see the shadows of it and thought to myself he is going to lift it up into the ceiling fan
What do you want? a medal or a trophy?
I think a trophy is a bit far. Also, what kind of person asks the recipient of an award in what way they'd like their award given to them?
Hammond: "You have a pencil I can borrow?!"
Sawed the thing in half 🤣💀
the fact he just happens to have a saw with him, but not a pencil.
British tourists be like
I'm sure he gave it back
The man clearly owns a Jaaaaag
May-like, at that point.
The best episode ever. A good friend of mine and I love this Vietnam bike episode the best. When ever it came on we would call each other to tell it's on. My friend died 3 years ago and ......... I'll watch it for him. Thanks Top Gear and my friend Mark. I sure miss all of you. I'm a professional model ship builder 24 years now. So funny watching that poor ship being destroyed.
"You know, he will be APOCALYPICTALLY crossed about this" lol
2 years later you managed to twist my braincells trying to read that...
Mark Batarina Iii',,,,,,',,,,,, , ,,, ,,,,,
"Well I know he's cross about everything, so..."
Apocalypictally? Very creative, making your own words.
I remember watching this on Christmas day back in the day having the worst year of my life due to family issues and it really made it better, these 3 have made so many people smile over the years
6:31! His facial expression plus the music playing.. it's so perfect!
My first extended holiday was to Vietnam. I went for 30 days, travelled from north to south, Hanoi to Phu Quoc. it wasn't nearly enough time, I missed out on so much because of the short time-frame. Out of all 46 countries I've been to, this was the most unique and beautiful; from the limestone karst's in Nihn Bihn to the Archipelago's in Ha Long Bay, this truly is one of the most magnificent places in the world.
Let's be honest I nearly died of laughter when he tried to fix his ship and did then picked it up and hit the ceiling fan lol how many of you felt the same
Ja, ja, ja, yep. It was the best part!
@Reubens Ralte
He's most likely hispanic. That's how they write "ha ha ha".
@M Ralte daniel PEREZ, "are you German?"
Staged unfortunately
@@stewartgrindlay9760 Ssshh I don't want to think about it.
6:37 - Some day, these legends will sadly pass away; leaving behind this as one of their best scenes of being together.
oh god no dont make me think of that
Quite possible that this is the best top gear episode so far :D
Absolutely. Love it, but there are so many good ones
Certainly my favourite:)
Yep. Although I liked the africa one too.
It's between this one and the Toyota Hilux
Well we now have the mongolia special which really holds up to this one, Botswana and tanzania.
I really, really appreciate the random chef who walked by, and despite the language barrier knew just what needed to be done. “OH YEAH!”
" we've come to Kerry Katonas front room, oh it's all lovely this " 😂
Michael Wraight 😂😂😂 done me in
Michael Wraight 😂😂😂😂
Was the best bit! Killed me and I don’t even know who that is! 😂
This, for me, was their best ever 'road-trip special'... so far, anyway.
Inspired by this as kids, years later I did this same trip with my best friend, and loved every second of it!! Vietnam is a beautiful country! Can’t wait to go back and do it all over again.
Ended up going on honeymoon to Vietnam and it was epic. Can't wait to go back, a truly fantastic country.
The best Top Gear episode of all time. The best thing that these three have ever done. Nothing will ever top this.
“At last ive got a playmate”. Such a wholesome dad show. This was an epic episode. Vietnam is gorgeous!
I lost it at "apocalyptically cross" and when Hammond shoves his freshly mended mast into a ceiling fan.
Near the end of my freshman year of high school, my geography teacher showed us the full episode of this. It was the first time I’d ever watched Top Gear, and it was one of the funniest and most entertaining things I’d ever watched
To this day I wonder what kind of bet Jeremy lost, so he could agree to ride a bike through Vietnam.
When they got there he thought they would be driving cars through Vietnam, but they quickly realized that the producers had only given them enough money for bikes.
Please, they knew in advance what they were doing.
I think Jeremy has ridden a bike in Vietnam during the early 90s, i remember an episode where he was riding a Honda Super Cub 100, may be in around 1994-95.
+nayan kalita
That same Cub is probably still knocking around somewhere, unless it's fallen into a pothole and never recovered.
nayan kalita not Vietnam it was Cuba FYI
For me, the reason why I hold this as being the best example of Top Gear is that for once, we have no cars to focus on.
This leaves us with just the interplay between the three lead presenters. And that's what makes this special so good because these three are some of the funniest people on the BBC with great on-screen chemistry.
Just them, their trip and the country they have their trip in.
Just pure entertainment.
Who agrees that they should do more motorcycle episodes?
I agree!
Brian Tuazon well that's not gonna happen now :(
Brian Tuazon Jeremy Clarkson hates motorbikes...so it wouldn't have happened anyway.
*****
Really? Interesting.. How did you know?
Brian Tuazon in many interviews of celebrities hes shown how much he hates bikes. I dont quite understand why but i imagine its from either a bad experience of his or one of someone close to him. Or he just doesnt like having to be focused constantly to keep it balanced but thats not really a big issue because i find it just becomes natural and you dont even realise your doing it. Like on an onramp i sometimes lean a fair bit. Nowhere near like the MotoGP or superbikes but enough to where if i was to hit a bump id probably lose it then again i dont usually lean on areas ive never been because i dont want to risk it that much. But i think its a thrill to lean and know that you could have a very bad day if you wipeout or you could just come out of it full of adrenaline. But to each their own. I still absolutely love driving though but riding is just as much fun.
3 buddies roaming the world while having absolute fun and yet getting paid for it😭lucky fellas
Ikr ❤️❤️
I'm motorcycling in Vietnam right now with my father and brother because of this episode.
How was it?
This episode is some of the finest television I've ever seen.
I was in Vietnam last october. I loved it. People are friendly and the scenery is breathtaking. Someday I'll go back and do that road on a motorcycle.
lol James took his glasses off and it sounds like he withdrawal a sword 5:25
these top gear guys are living the best life anybody can have, traveling all over the world and riding awesome cars without spending any money from their own pockets
What an incredible fun adventure the boys must’ve had! They truly live a blessed life.
I watched this when I was young and when I was 21 toured vietnam on a motorbike just like them and did part of the route they did. Amazing country!
6.30 absolutely love that part, one of my favourites episodes even though they were on motorbikes
6:31 Hammond having a Vietnam flashback
Stupid Elephant he’s British
Couldn't come up with a name it's a joke
redpill media godfather oh I thought someone actually believes he fought in the Vietnam war
quite literally
Don't think Hammond's old enough to have fought in the war even if he were American.
This, in my opinion, is the best challenge of Top Gear ever.
This and Botswana. Amazing scenery in both places.
''then the vespa went all italian again''
i didnt get what they meant by that since italians make really good cars and motorcycles
pAtRiCk StAr why did you reply to him as if motorcycles and cars aren’t vehicles ?
@pAtRiCk StAr I agree, i have a vespa that i have had to repair 3 times in 4 months. i have only driven it 30 times or so.
You know why they call it a Ford, don'tcha? It stands for "Fix it again, Tony." Heheh
@The Bushwacker true
"Finally I have a playmate!" This made me smile.
This is already getting too nostalgic... Phenomenal
Think this Vietnam special was one of the best things top gear have ever done :)
Serio 13 lat to jest stare
As far as i'm concerned, there is literally no better TV than the classic top gear specials. New top gear could never be half as good as this.
The first seconds of this video are them cruising on Da Nang beach. Such a weird feeling to look at my hometown 13 years ago lol. Now everything is changing, but I still love the beach. So calm and refreshing.
Jeremy: "Hammond, just hit the sign..."
James: "I know this Bloke's furious..".🤣🤣🤣🤣
That petty "oh dear" is golden 😂😂
When hammond lifted up his ship and it got destroyed by the fan, that had me laughing so hard
You can tell that the lady who started painting the bicycle pink wasnt meant to happen XD May being genuinely shocked to learn it wasnt her bike and Jeremy barely able to contain his laughter whilst explaining the situation. One of my favorite bits of TV
"You missed abit there that you musn't do aswell" my god I love James May
3:54 I like how you can faintly hear Hammond laughing and then almost immediately, they show it again
This special is just legendary. This will be remembered forever
"You have a pencil I can borrow?!"
Sawed it in half
this episode had so many good songs that they had to cut out because of copyright infringement. they replaced hendrix with generic 60's style music
Yeah I really do wish people would watch the originals one. Be it Blu-ray, Netflix,... or torrent. Even many of these episodes aired outside of UK are remixed and edited from the original.
Cinematography and music is so amazing in TG when you are watching the original one in HD.
***** They removed a lot of seasons from Netflix, my favorite episodes are gone :d I'll have to get the DVDs then
maikkeli No point getting the DVD if you want to original music.
It's all because of complicated rights management.
The BBC have the right to play nearly anything they like when broadcasting on TV, but not on other media such as DVDs. Hence DVD and BluRay releases don't have the same music either :(
djpalme I myself didn't mean that I wanted the original music for the episodes, I just wanted to be able to watch them haha
I'm not a big fan of torrents though so that's why I'll probably get a DVD someday
I mean they have Ramble On by Led Zeppelin so I wouldn’t really be bitchin’
Protagonist: "How we ever find the villains in this city?"
The villains: 0:06
watching this episode after all this year, . honestly, i have laughed so so so much to the point i forgot it was a car show .. this episode can easily beat any comedy show in laughter,,& not just this episode mall the episodes..... the jokes,,ooof.. just too good, loved this trio
Wow.. that view looks like an painting on a canvas. .. i like this trios apreciating the beauty of vietnam👍👍👍

Sorry Charlie!
We shoot the sick, the young, the lame

Napalm sticks to kids.
One of the best specials of Top Gear if not the best
I watched this as a teen and went on honeymoon to Vietnam aged 32, in no small part because of this episode (and a shout out to Mr Bourdain). It was magical.
"You missed abit there you mustn't do" -James May
"The weed bag doesn't work." Out of context or in it, that line cracked me up XD
For all the scripted stuff and comedy bits, their friendship and trust for each other is really genuine can’t believe how long they’ve worked together it’s really something almost like a marriage hahaha in a weird funny way
8:19 the best moment ever. I just cant stop laughing at it. Hammond works so hard so fix his Galleon and then slams it on the fan above. Oh my God...
Jeremy - "I fear my new mod look has been spoiled slightly because somebody has written "Penis" on my helmet."
Hammond - "I did that." *Drives off*
golden scene
"I know he's crossed but I've told him a chef did it!" 😂
"You missed a bit there that you must'n't do" Lmao I love James's humor !
@6:30-7:00...This was an oddly poignant moment. I don't think I've ever seen those three that transfixed and inspired. The BBC are just idiotic for letting them go. This is brilliant story telling.
Keep watching this like once every two months, they had so much fun on this episode
Watching jeremy enjoy biking is wholesome.
The feels.. The nostalgia.... made me cry tears of happiness...
Those two painting Hamster's bike pink is one of the funniest moments in all of Top Gear.
This special marked the peak of Top Gear.
Top Gear has made the sound in my head exactly like the 3 of them, and I love it
There is no bad mood that a good cup of coffee and an episode of this show can't fix! lol I love it!
U know, after watching this episode, me and my gf planned to go to Vietnam and ride in this same route as these 3 blokes
As a motorcyclist, this was an epic, epic special!
still one of the best all-time promotions for Vietnam!. the rest is history
Username fits video lol PS. What bikes you Got?
Hammond's expression at 6:30 gets me every time.
I visited Nam because of this special. Did exactly what they did but in reverse, starting in Hạ Long Bay. And in a car. With air-con. Because reasons... Staggeringly beautiful country.
It is thanks to this episode that I was adamant in exploring south east Asia.
I spent 3 months of my life, hopping from one island to the next, partying on the beaches, meeting new people and making friends I still annoy to this day.
Aside from the embalming fluid they put in the drinks, it was the most beautiful experience I’ve ever had.
Wow! Vietnam looks brilliant! That coastal road looks stunning, love to get there one day for a bike tour.
8:45 made me cry. Love that song from Led Zeppelin
Rick Morks top 3 zeppelin songs for sure. Absolutely slaps
This was the first episode of top gear I ever watched and it is by far my favorite
THE best episode of THE best show on TV.. period !!!
4:21 just killed me, lmao😂😂
9:11 Oh " dear "
Kills me every time
I live in Vietnam and I’ve been on the mountain roads and I can confirm , the roads and view is brilliant
It looks stunning
Wow! Time flies since I watched this!
I think James bought the best bike. It's simple, reliable, a common sight and easy to get parts for. I reckon a faster Honda Cub would have been just the ticket. I think if Clarkson was looking for a bike, he could have had some kind of Honda as they were a common sight and easy for parts.
Truly one of their best episodes!
