Say Goodbye to KDP Select

  • Today we’re going to say goodbye to KDP Select program.
    I know many authors and self publishers are quite frustrated with KDP and Amazon as a whole lately. Well what if I told you that for many of you there’s been a recent change in the industry that has the potential to not only help us authors make more money, but also allow you to take back some of the control that Amazon KDP may have had over you and your self-publishing business?
    For those of you who aren’t aware, the KDP Select program is a 90-day program that KDP has where you can enroll your ebook into the program and then readers who are enrolled in the Kindle Unlimited program, can read your books and you’ll get paid on a per page read basis.
    The big issue that many authors have with the KDP Select program is that it’s an exclusivity program. Which means, as long as you’re enrolled in the program, your ebook cannot be sold anywhere else on the internet (not even on your own website)
    As a side note, another issue I have is that once you sign up for KDP Select, KDP defaults to having you auto-enrolled into the program going forward. Which means you have to go in and un-enroll and then wait until the enrollment window is up before you can start selling your ebooks elsewhere.
    For those of you who are enrolled in KDP Select and love it, don’t worry it’s not going anywhere. The reason I said you can say goodbye to KDP Select is because many of you probably don’t know this, but there’s actually a competitor to the KDP Select program. It’s another all-you-can-read subscription model called Kobo Plus and up until recently it was only available in Canada, but Kobo Writing Life just announced that they’ve now opened up Kobo Plus in US and the UK.
    You heard that right, if you’re in the UK, US or Canada you can enroll your ebooks into the Kobo Plus program. But wait there’s more. Kobo Plus is not just for ebooks, you can add your audiobooks into the program as well.
    But wait…there’s more… instead of being paid on a per page basis, your pay is calculated based on how long your readers are actually reading/or listening to your books. This can be extremely beneficial for authors who write longer form content.
    Kobo Plus is Non-exclusive! That means you can enroll your ebook and audiobook into the Kobo Plus program and still have it sold on other platforms.

      @@KeithWheelerBooks Would you happen to know if this works if going through D2D, or do we need to go direct to Kobo Writing directly? Currently with D2D and it gets distributed, but would love it if we get included via d2d for all the good stuff :)

      It’s Kobo Plus either way so it’ll work the same way whether you’re using Kobo directly or D2D.

    Yeah, the Kobo Issue is that if you have faster readers - you won't be paid as much.

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Год назад +2

      That’s very true. But with non-exclusivity, you can still have it on Amazon, too. It just cannot be on KDP Select.

    Kobo+ is non-exclusive? What's the catch? And why would one need kdp select other than for their huge market share, which doesn't guarantee the success of one's book.
    Thanks for the great content by the way 🙏

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Год назад +1

      There’s no catch, Kobo Plus is just non-exclusive. So you can still be on Amazon, you just wouldn’t have access to the countdown deal or free promo days that come with kdp select.

  • @lauralai9694
    @lauralai9694 Год назад +1

    Supposedly, one has its ebook on KDP Select for the exclusive 90 days. Does s/he has to count the days or it gets an automatic email that it's not anymore in the KDP Select and can upload ebook on other platforms (like the Kobo+)?

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Год назад

      If you’re signed up for KDP select you can go to the book you’re referring to, go next to the ebook version and there will be three dots. Click on those dots and there’s an option that says “KDP Select Info” and it will bring a pop up. On the pop up it’ll show you the term start date and the term end date. You’ll also notice an auto re-enroll box. This box is typically checked by default.
      So to answer your question, No, you do not get alerted to when your 90-day period is up and, if you don’t de-select the box, after your 90-day period is up, KDP will start another 90-day KDP select enrollment for you.

    Ok. the options for Kobo sound good, but what is its reach compared to KDP/Amazon?

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Год назад +1

      KDP/Amazon has a much larger reach as they are in multiple countries while Kobo Plus is only in CA and now US and UK. That said, since Kobo Plus is non-exclusive, you can still have your ebook on KDP/Amazon, it just can’t be in KDP Select.

    • @sainangtsotetsi5695
      @sainangtsotetsi5695 Год назад +2

      @@KeithWheelerBooks if Kobo Plus is only available in CA, UK & US does that mean you can only publish on Kobo Plus if you're in those countries or you can only subscribe if you are in those countries?

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Год назад +1

      Kobo Plus is the program for readers. So you should be able to publish to kobo plus even if you don’t reside in those countries, but only consumers in those countries would get access to the kobo plus to read your books. Also, just to be clear, kobo plus is only for ebooks.

      Yes, you can run a free book promotion for your ebook for a total of 5 days in a 90-day period. (They don’t have to be consecutive)

    I don't think kdp select is working well for my short story. Like I have downloads but small amount of reads and it's not paying much.

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  10 месяцев назад

      Yeah KDP Select only pays about 1/2 a cent per page read, so it’s not super beneficial for making money when you have short reads. They’re super beneficial if you have either longer novels or a deep backlog. Other than that, they’re helpful if you have a CTA in the book for either joining your email list or leaving a review.
