    I wouldn’t count preorder books in your research when looking at these categories. Especially for pricing!
    Amazon used to require a book file when setting up a preorder. Lots of authors still upload a placeholder file, which is usually the first few chapters of a full length novel. These get slotted into Short Reads automatically. When the full novel is uploaded, it’ll get removed from Short Reads.
    My 75k novel spent several weeks in short reads. My readers knew it would be a full novel, so they paid full novel price while it was in preorder status. It took about three days for it to drop out of the Short Reads category once the full novel went live.
    That would skew research for anyone trying to break into this niche, so be aware!

    Nice reminder with Amazon's pricing increase. I started writing them because I like to finish a book while sitting in the waiting room, waiting to pick up kids, etc.

    Thanks for this video, Keith! I am wondering something, though. I want to earn at least 5K per month writing Werewolf Shifter Romance Short Reads. Is that even possible if I am in Kindle Unlimited, even if I am putting out these books super fast? Or is it best to just charge normally at about $1.99 or something?

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  8 месяцев назад +1

      Excellent question! While it'll be difficult with a short read to pull the page reads needed to make that amount of money, Kindle Unlimited is a good way to get new readers to try out your books.
      Therefore, my suggestion would be to put your first 2-3 books on Kindle Unlimited and then publish the rest not utilizing the KDP Select program. Also, I would take all books that are not on KU and publish them wide using Draft2Digital. This will expand your reach to find more readers.

    Thanks a lot for this informative video! I have one question; Would you recommend promoting a short story/short reads just as you would with a novel?

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for the kind words. In general, yes you’ll promote your short reads like you would a novel. The important thing is to be sure to mention it’s a short read or short story or X number of pages.
      Many times customers don’t read the product detail section and if they’re expecting a longer book and are not told it’s a short read, it can lead to negative reviews.

  • @michaelserrur

    Hey Keith, thanks for the video. Question: Do the Kindle Unlimited books still make that 35% royalty or do they get paid by page reads? If so, isn't this a disadvantage for shorts? Thanks

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  4 месяца назад +1

      Great question! With KU you get paid on a page read basis. It comes to approximately $.004 per page read.
      That’s right, less than 1/2 a penny per page read.

  • @shirleyburns1982

    If you can't select the Short Reads category, then how do you get your book in front of Amazon for a chance? Can you publish a 1-page book exactly like you publish any other and just hope for a chance at Short Reads?

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Год назад +4

      Once you publish your ebook and it’s live, after a few days, the categorizing algorithm will place your book.

    would a photograph ebook qualify for short reads, and would you recommend it? thx

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  11 месяцев назад

      I don’t know if it would qualify as a short read, because if it’s strictly a photo book, then you don’t “read” it. That said, Amazon is who assigns what’s a short read or not, so they may qualify it as such.
      As for whether or not it’s a good idea, I’d say do some niche research and see what the competition is and if the books there are selling. I have videos that show how to do niche research. That should tell you if it’s a niche worth diving into.

  • @cedcarroll19
    @cedcarroll19 10 месяцев назад +1

    Keith, this might be a silly question but I’ve heard you don’t need to copyright a short story. To me, it’s still your work that can be taken. What are your thoughts?

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  10 месяцев назад +1

      Technically, you don’t “need” to copyright any written work. Under copyright law, a work is copyrighted as soon as it is created in a “fixed” copy. Which is legal speak for, when it’s written. Digitally is better as you have date and time created on the document.
      That said, there are some legal limitations to that form of copyright, which is why many take the added step (and cost) of filing for an official government copyright. This is the type of copyright admissible in court.
      So, regardless of whether you file for an official documented copyright or not, your work is copyrighted and should have a copyright page.
      Only you can determine based on the work and your budget if you should file for a government copyright, but I hope this helped clarify things.

    Does a short story or novella count as short read?

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Год назад

      Kindle short reads are only for the ebook version and any ebook that comes in at 100 pages or less is considered. Unfortunately, you can’t request to have your book in short reads categories, Amazon decides that on their own.

      Short reads are just the ebook version. For paperbacks, kdp does require a minimum of 24 pages.
