  • Roboticist Andrea Thomaz gives us an under-the-hood peak at what is coming in the field of Robotics where robots will eventually be able to function and collaborate with humans as naturally as humans do with each other in social situations.
    Andrea Thomaz knows robots. Her work developing robots that don't need programming to perform every task and that can collaborate side by side with humans as assistants, domestic help, etc. has been recognized by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. Her work with social robots “Simon” and “Curi” has been featured in the New York Times and on NOVA Science Now.

    In 2012, Thomaz was named to Popular Science Magazine’s “Brilliant 10” and she was named an “Innovator under 35” by MIT Technology Review in 2009. She is an Associate Professor of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Tech and director of the Socially Intelligent Machines lab. She earned a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999, and Sc.M. and Ph.D. degrees from MIT in 2002 and 2006. Thomaz has published in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Human-Robot Interaction.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    Roboticist Andrea Thomaz is poised and articulate. She should be commended
    for tenaciously maintaining a straight face while engaging the unsightly gadget.

      I know you’re being sarcastic but Star Wars is told from a Galaxies perspective that had far more advanced tech than us, a galaxy that probably if we go by our calendar probably had the tech to build a Dyson Sphere, and floating cities in the 20th Century.

    • @Syklonus
      @Syklonus 5 лет назад +1

      To maintain a sense that there is no danger. It's a fine line between recognisable and relatable to creepy and frightening. If it does cross over to the latter then at least our primal instincts tell us that it's only a child and can be easily reasoned with or persuaded. The most important thing with robots is knowing and feeling that you are in control. A child's voice just helps maintain that feeling.

    because it's cool!!!!....then we realize we don't have skills without the robots. just like now people can't live in the wild for a month without freaking out or dying. Technology has its place but we must understand the gains we make from AI are not human gains...we will be left in the dust at the rates computers process data.

      THE real interesting thing about this is women really know that they over talk and don't listen to what a 'man' is saying, is because both the programmer (woman) and programed robot (woman) are BOTH woman! Please see 1 Corinthians 14:33-35. The man that knows his Bible should be worshipped by his woman, amen. Btw, chapter 7 works also with those same verses. God says, I don't dispute. AAAmen.

    ...actually they will look like the top 100 sexiest men and women on Earth.

  • @andrewenderfrost8161

    Uncanny valley makes this unusable. Why would you want one robot to do everything when you can have many specific robots?! A roomba for vacuuming, a dishwasher for dishes, an automatic stove etc. It makes the company more money and the consumer gets the cool factor.

    Why why does this robot have to have a child like voice? Not only is this creepy looking but to add more creepiness they add the kid voice. Maybe humans would except the robot at home helping out but it's the fact that they insist on putting faces on them. remove the face and leave it as what it is A ROBOT/MACHINE
