- How do we co-exist with robots? What will robots with empathy be like?
A computer science graduate from Simon Fraser University, Canada, Angelica completed her doctorate in Kyoto University, where she built a new breed of robot emotion system, based on the knowledge of human infant development.
She was the first employee at Aldebaran Japan working on the new humanoid robot, Pepper.
Also part of the Okuno Speech Media Processing Lab in Kyoto University, she has won awards for her work, including signal processing and entertainment robotics, and aims to develop human-inspired models of emotions and intelligence in robots.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
I love that hypothetical situation where the robot would be like "9:01pm Bitch!" lol
The robot is so cute. This is an idea worth sharing.
I think it´s a great idea to have robots recognise human facial expressions to determine how we are feeling and make decisions accordingly, as in: Case1= Your robot sees you are sad and cheers you up with a little dance. But these reactions will have to be tightly controlled as in Case 2= A robot shouldnt let a burglar in the house just because he looks sad when he is told he can´t enter. This would be great programming.
The danger is when robots mimic emotions and we mistake them for real feelings. If we create robots to have life-like emotions, where we cannot tell the difference between our emotions and that of a robot, what would we do if they seemed to yearn to be free?
Let the robots react to us, but ultimately, I want them to obey their programming, not a robotic sense of morality
+funlovincop Two things: 1) In Japan, even humans will "obey their programming" and not let you break a rule, but at least they would be empathetic and nice about it. 2) Some robots, depending on their role or personality programming, could be more empathetic than others.
Impressive but still scary. She didn't cover how even though some people are treated with love and care growing up, they can still turn out to become killers, thieves, etc.
"I see an open future with moral machines, and moral people."
I'm sure you'll see that too. But there's no doubt that robots lacking emotional empathy will be employed by the military industrial complex, criminals, etc. Robots will mirror humanity, there's no getting around that.
If a hospital had robots as a workforce visiting hours would be 24/7 :)
Understaffing would cease to exist in such environments.
+Sonny “Soul” DM Cleverly thought out.. lol
There is a vast difference between human and robot emotion.
That's an empty statement. Philosophical at best. Emotions are not well understood... certainly not well enough to be able to discriminate between human and robot emotions.
ddoyon92 Robots don't have minds. Their emotions are fake.
jackjofaz Oh snap. That's the explanation! You got me there!
Wendy Mcreynollds Robot can analyze emotions from facial expression. So like in the hospital example she gave. The government issues out some standard requirements for robotic politicing. Like all robots who perform substitute authority services (like police, bodyguard or hospital security guard) must be able to recognize a plea or an "emergency" situation. This plea is then transmitted by the robot to a supervisor who then can either communicate to the person through the robot (microphone) or go to the location themselves.
Robots that copy humans completely? This is a totally new kind of robot. This is no longer a robot but a complete standalone type of "living being" that is separate from humans as a tool. This living robot will then evolve into a living being later on down the line because metal resources take more energy to get and manufacture than organic resources.
That is precisely right. It might be of interest to watch the "breaking free from technology" TEDx talk. We will break away from technology before any robots controls us. Folks tend to forget that we have limited capacities in our brains. Elementary.
Awesome, can't wait to buy one in a near future.
Peter Ron Boström Buy one now and you'll get one for free. In the future, we won't be buying robots, but robots will buy us.
:P
If possible, does anyone know the song played for the opening animation? It all really got me pumped up haha
+Vincent Cutino It's from Avatar the movie, 'I see you'
+Vincent Cutino By Leona Lewis
Awesome. Thank you
Anytime
What name of song, which is under the dancing robot?
Василий ОВ Vangelis - Conquest of Paradise
Are the dance move program in to the robot or it's executed through AI
they are programmed in to the robot
did she say...robots do what they feel is right? feel?
future future future future
At 13:58, we've seen such, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genie_(feral_child)
Is he doing Taichi?
Could it be that robots won't control us after all? Could it be that we will experience a human reversal in the years to come? Sooner or later, folks will start taking more breaks from computing and regain their humanity.
what if a powerful robot is hacked...
+Muyuan Liu a powerful robot that dreams and creates is unhackable :) but if there were a loophole then would grant a wish I suppose :P
Why would you need this? From what I'm gathering, you want to make sure the robot doesn't take over the world with it's strict rules so you give it emotion. But I think emotion people make some pretty horrible decisions too. And if you're looking for a playmate, maybe you should look for people to share emotions with. In the future maybe humans can be the source of better empathy for one another and not robots. If robots have emotions and consciousness, don't they become our slaves?
THAT IS WHAT I'VE BEEN TRYING TO SAY ALL ALONG!!!
SHELDON
I am robot scientist, in the sphere of artificial intelligence, and also had opportunity to work with the same robot in the presentation. But i strongly disagree with the speaker. This is long going debate that is taking place, and it is tightly connected with the world view.
Robot is nothing else then a computer filled with the extra hardware, read motors. It is a piece of machine, executing commands. Humans are not machines executing commands. Just to prove my point. After the beep signal, she said to NAO "say hi", and NAO said "hi". She said dance, and robot danced. But robot cannot refuse dance if there is not a command to refuse. Machines works, they dont live. What is a difference? Robots cannot do nothing. If robot is doing nothing, it is actually executing command to do nothing, as long as it is powered. We work also, lets say, "executing commands", but we have choice to choose to LIVE. We have a choice to execute or not this "commands". Robots, computers and other machines dont have self awareness. That thing cannot be putted in code.
+Michael Presečan free will, reminiscent of 'I, Robot'
+Michael Presečan
you just described human beings.
I disagree that human thinking and even feeling can't be programmed in the future. We're not as special and complicated as some might think.
Good for entertainment but I think still impractical, slow movements, human is better, and it is quite hard to judge someone emotion if that thing do not have mouth and eyebrows, it is more like you talking to a rock and just assume it got emotion.
Cax
I need a friend Meh?

We still don't know how our brains work and we have not yet understand emotions, so how are you going to teach a robot love?
This will be a good toy for lonely people or they can get a pet instead.

She's really pretty as a girl in the field of computer science.
She sounds condesending like she's talking to a 4 year old.
