I am a wheelchair bounded girl i can't walk but i am confident, independent and educated girl, at my early age i accepted myself the way i am, but unfortunately the society would never allow you to live with peace. Whenever i go outside shopping,or go to the restaurants or any other place people look at me like if i have come from an another planet! I can see sympathy in their eyes for me clearly. Some people come to chat with me directly to tell how much they feel sorry for me. That literally hurts. By the grace of Allah i am strong enough to deal with all this,i never let anyone to destroy my inner peace. But i feel for those people like me who are differently abled and they cannot face people's behaviour towards them. They lock themselves in their homes and spend the rest of their lives like this! I wish people could understand once that their single word can break/destroy someone's soul, their confidence their strength to face the world. I wish people see different people as social instead of weird.
Not everyone does! And I know I don't. I always feel comfortable around everyone (unless they seem sketch). I think it's because my third grade class had an autistic student. So if you look funny, or have a disability, it doesn't bother me.
I’m sorry that you continue to have this experience. I don’t understand why ppl feel it’s necessary to put others down or judge them? It’s not right! Hopefully one day ppl will be kinder to one another! No matter our differences! God bless

Loujain Alghabra wrote "I went to USA and almost everyone treated me like a freak they either avoided me or was rude. I am a woman in veil and a proud Muslim" Uh-huh. And how do you suppose that the typical white Christian American woman, wearing jeans and a tight t-shirt would be treated in say, Saudi Arabia? I've traveled all over the world, and the first thing I do, long before I actually *enter* any other country or culture, is to research the norms, and make sure that I conform to them while I'm there, so I'm not causing them any friction. You should've done that before you came to the US, or at the very least, figured it out once you got here. Most Americans don't approve of women wearing veils for religious or cultural reasons. You should've left that back in the M.E., or not come until you got a clue about American culture. Instead, you decided to impose your personal beliefs (or more accurately, the beliefs you were indoctrinated into by men) upon a culture that correctly views such things as divisive and retrograde. And why are you a "proud Muslim"? Pride isn't a virtue (Muhammad warned against it), and having pride in something you were born into, or that was given you, is the shallowest of conceits. If you must feel pride, feel it in whatever you *accomplish* in life. But you didn't accomplish being a Muslim; all that took was refusing to think for yourself, and going along with what others told you to think and believe.
Why did she flee to US? Because her country decided to embrace socialism. So she comes here to tell us what we've done wrong. I think I am going to do a Test talk on what other countries are doing wrong. That's only fair

Yea, but i can't do it in this country. I can't persue what i want. there are lot of talents here but it seems that parents won't allow their children to persue what they want. They like to hear that their children is good at studies, but not that he's good at something else and not in studies. Here education system is a factory where students study for their survival or they will starve, they study to get respect for not being disrespected and confronted by someone. here is no learning, but memorising it just to pass exams and get admission in good colleges so that they can be a middle class family that have access to basic demands for survival. i hate the whole education system here, you'll find teachers than anywhere else cuz here is no option after failing your dream exams..
What stupidity, by God! It is incredible how they manipulate weak-brained people with beautiful words and emotional stories, so that they cry and do something predetermined, such as voting in the presidential elections! But the saddest thing is that they manipulate the society of the United States!!!, they treat them like animals in a social experiment! That is why Biden won, and that is why that country is weaker and more impotent every day! there are invading people who think they own the country where they are given refuge!! Venezuelans do that in Colombia and also in the United States! Instead of giving thanks, they go there to get rich and destroy the country that shook their hands !

Success can’t beat anyone, if someone is determined & humble. On 12th November 2025, I will also speak in TEDx and inspire people through my life story.

I am taking an English test tomorrow in order to study abroad my Master's degree, and I came here to listen to a speech in English. And yeah, that was more than just language assistance!
What a powerful talk. She is very clear in her thoughts so the words are coming out like a cascade. I salute this brave lady and she is an inpiration and example to others. Certainly beauty is an added value to a speaker to easily attract the croud and she has got it.
I don't think the way that the speaker looked made a difference in her speech, presentation, and ability to grab the audiences attention. Regardless of the way she looked, her speech was powerful, moving, and captivating. I don't think Prijo Prijotte was saying otherwise. Prijo was just saying that beauty was an added value and that this could have attracted members of the crowd. Regardless, people attend TedTalks to listen and to learn new ideas or point of views, not to gawk or leer.
Do not argue about the value of her beauty. It is an important part of who she is and one of many things that make her special - right there beside her intelligence, her kindness, her concern for people, and, of course, her life experiences. Mariana - I am honored to have heard your words, am lifted to become a better person, and am grateful. To you, I say, amen.
When she speaks of feeling out of place as an outsider when she was younger, I'm thinking, literally every kid feels that at some point, whether they're from another country, another state or just a kid starting in a new school. Everybody goes through that and you just have to work through it hoping that time and experience will help you overcome. I think the real message here, and where Mariana is such an inspiration is, if you're an awkward kid, feeling different and "other," you're not alone and this is part of the general human condition... and looking at Mariana's example, one day you will own the room just by showing up. Mariana is a lovely woman and she carries herself with confidence, class and grace.
"You can't let differences define you" - this is the most meaningful line for me. I'm just in tears right now, only came here to learn English then I also learned a beautiful lesson of life🙂We cannot label others "different" because we are all different. Great speech.I've always been wondering what it means to truly embrace diversity. I think her speech gave me some really important hints. Thanks so much!
14:16 this moment of the video broke my heart , i felt so happy after she said her sister back to walk again .. both of these girls are real fighters . they are a good example to face the life with its hard and people who don't have any feeling
One day I was doing my assignment, and I came across this special word of Mariana Atencio. This is so inspiring and awesome, I like the way she encourage people and I also like to listen and learn from her.
My favorite quote was that never let society to say that you don't fit the mold, we are all quirky and unique in our own way. She basically says that being different, even in a way that sucks, we should never be ashamed of it.Instead of it we should be proud of them and never let these things define us and overcome difficulties beyond anyone's expectation. I really loved this speech, that was so inspiring .At the moment I am going through some hardships myself, because I am different and I dream big and people want me to just fit in the mold.I really appreciate this.Thank you so much.
I've just read Miariana's book "Perfectly You, Embracing the Power of Being Real". To be honest I cried a lot because as an immigrant I could feel the power in every story she shared in her book as some she shared in this TED talk-all that struggle, fear, shame, and vulnerability that we as imigrants carry on our every day lives. I didn't plan to stay here forever, I just wanted to work for two years and save up enough money to pay for my education back in my natal Honduras. But that time never comes and we end up staying because the money is never enough to fulfill our dreams and we have to take care of our families. I am more aware of my dreams and which strategies I need to use in order to achieve them. I didn't have a role model father nor a mother to guide me, I didn't have the tools as Mariana did so she could fulfill her dream, but I do have them now. I may feel too old, too short, not prepare enough or not smart enough and that I've missed my opportunity, but I will do anything to change this chip I have in my mind thay does not allow me to grow, and to start thinking differently. Go shase your dreams Adelisa, as this brilliant and brave Latin woman did and never looked back egain.
"Being able to reimagine yourself beyond what other people's see ,that is the toughest task of all, but it also the most beautiful " "The single thing every one of us has in common is being human" thease are the most meaningful line for me💗😌😌🥺🥺💖💖
She's is amazing, the way how she expressed herself and her confidence is really cool. She is a very proud venezuelan. Furthermore beautiful as girls over there.
From a neighbor next door to Venezuela and his people, I can totally agree and applaud Mariana. We can all make a contribution to humanity when we are treated humanely. I came to this country of ours as a poor teenager with great dreams of becoming an engineer and being successful. Well, my dream was realized, not because those who looked down on me but those who opened their doors and hearts and held my hand through my life in this beautiful country of us all. God bless America
10:53 "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will fight to the death to defend your right to say it." "Without a dialogue, we will keep repeating the same mistakes because we will not learn anything new." Wise words.
Well said. I have embraced my weird personality a long time ago, since I was 16. Just decided that if someone is gonna love me, I need to know if they love the real me. And interesting enough, if someone hated me, they wouldn't be wrong. Because I'm me. Not hiding any of it. Weird, and will always be, who care, that's just me. And I love those whom hate me sometimes, their hate isn't a reason enough for mine. Anyway, loved your talk. It was heart felt. Simple yet profound. Best of luck dear.
I am a student from malaysia. I will use this video to do the task given by my teacher. This video was very inspiring to me and also to the rest of the viewers. Thank you so much. I am a journalist. My job is to talk to people from all walks of life, all over the world. Today, I want to tell you why I decided to do this with my life and what I've learned. My story begins in Caracas, Venezuela, in South America, where I grew up; a place that to me was, and always will be, filled with magic and wonder. Frоm a very young age, my parents wanted me to have a wider view of the world. I remember one time when I was around seven years old, my dad came up to me and said, "Mariana, I'm going to send you and your little sister..." - who was six at the time - "...to a place where nobody speaks Spanish. I want you to experience different cultures." He went on and on about the benefits of spending an entire summer in this summer camp in the United States, stressing a little phrase that I didn't pay too much attention to at the time: "You never know what the future holds." Meanwhile, in my seven-year-old mind, I was thinking, we were going to get to summer camp in Miami. (Laughter) Maybe it was going to be even better, and we were going to go a little further north, to Orlando, where Mickey Mouse lived. (Laughter) I got really excited. My dad, however, had a slightly different plan. Frоm Caracas, he he sent us to Brainerd, Minnesota.
I live in Brazil and am a singer, and everything you said is a reality. Unfortunately, some people look at others with an empirical gaze, judge them by what they see and do not try to know who they really are. The world is a school and every day we learn to live and get to know each other better. Thank you for the constructive pelestra.
Sometimes we are over analyzing who and what we are. Sometimes it’s just too much. JUST BE! Be the best version of yourself wherever you are and whoever you are. This is Beautyful of life.
Me encantó ese video!! All Latin people should watch it. I came to see something that maybe will help me to improve my english and helped me to feel me important, different and special💖🇩🇴
Hello "study casket". I also have seen many videos/ talks from TEDx Talks for the last 6 six years. This video of Mariana is one of my 20 favorites ones to practice my listening skill in English. She has a great level in pronunciation. Greetings from Sonora, México 🇲🇽
I remember that when I was a child, my school mates and I were raised with this phrase "We all are equal" then, when I was like 24, I had a conference at work about handicap people and they told us "We all are different, we are not equal, and that is ok". That was mind-blowing and changed my POV.
l come here 2020, so l just post my comment here. l have't watched the talk yet, but l think everyone is born with the different bodies and personalities ,that's what make us special. All we want is the attention from others because everyone wants the feeling of being important. What we need do is to better ourselves, thus we let others like us and we become special
Me too I am special. I can speak fluent English and fluent Arabic. I can cook well and dance well .. belly dance .. Saudi dance .. I wrote songs in English .. I write a lot .. I teach and I help those that need help... and I smile a smile that makes you remember your happiest times! It means I love people! I think what makes us all special is our sweet differences.
I wanted to improve our English from these conversations, but I learned amazing things, fortunately, I am very happy that we have such people who always talk about their experiences and we learn from these good things, thank you very much.
I have a wonderful autistic son who has taught me unconditional love, humility and acceptance. I wish society would give people like him a chance in life.
@@ahmedjamalhumakani I have a Taiwanese friend who in answer to most opinions says 50:50.. Meaning that most opinions are partly true. When I saw the video pic I almost didn't watch thinking pretty much along the likes of what Bittu Kumar said. However on watching she nevertheless spoke truths that I think are better than much of the garbarge put out there. To be perfect, having no prejudices, no judgements of others, totally unselfish would be utterly fantastic but how many of us are! So lets keep on battling within. Unless we're perfect! All good things brother. I'm flawed and working on it cause I know we all face the depth of the Law and there is no escaping it.
@@BittuKumar-uf7er Yes oh wise one. She ain't perfect. But then who is? Look my point is that it's easy to criticise but what's the point? Best to ask ourself the question "who am I"?
What makes me different is my birthmark on my face, I used to get bullied because of it but I have this friend, I met him online and he said that its normal and that's what makes me unique and special, that I shouldn't care about what people will say about me. I don't even like to have it too but all the thing that I can do is to embrace it.This video helps me to accept what I am.

She really got her message through and made us appreciate that our own life experiences if reflected on can teach us something of great value.

Of course.
This woman made me cry, touched my heart. Gracias, Mariana 💖

There's something about her, that is very attractive! She makes you want to listen to her talk all day

very right. I watched it 3 times and every time it is amazing.
Most likely because of her sincerity, I can see her barely holding back her tears when she talked about her roommate and sister.

"the single thing every one of us has in common is being human"what a beautiful lessons u taught me today!! Thank you 💖
I've just read Miariana's book "Perfectly You, Embracing the Power of Being Real".
Bless you, Eliza. I wish you all the best.

She's is amazing, the way how she expressed herself and her confidence is really cool. She is a very proud venezuelan. Furthermore beautiful as girls over there.
Her talk gave me goosebumps.. it really changed my perspective towards myself and others around me
From a neighbor next door to Venezuela and his people, I can totally agree and applaud Mariana.
I've hoped this video will be edited with subtitles they are really helpful in many ways.

Wow Journalist???
She's beautiful as a movie star......i think she has more gift than others.
Thank you so much.
I am a journalist.
My job is to talk to people
from all walks of life,
all over the world.
Today, I want to tell you
why I decided to do this with my life
and what I've learned.
My story begins in Caracas, Venezuela,
in South America, where I grew up;
a place that to me was,
and always will be,
filled with magic and wonder.
Frоm a very young age,
my parents wanted me
to have a wider view of the world.
I remember one time
when I was around seven years old,
my dad came up to me and said,
"Mariana, I'm going to send you
and your little sister..."
- who was six at the time -
"...to a place where nobody
speaks Spanish.
I want you to experience
different cultures."
He went on and on about the benefits
of spending an entire summer
in this summer camp in the United States,
stressing a little phrase
that I didn't pay
too much attention to at the time:
"You never know what the future holds."
Meanwhile, in my seven-year-old mind,
I was thinking, we were going
to get to summer camp in Miami.
(Laughter)
Maybe it was going to be even better,
and we were going to go
a little further north, to Orlando,
where Mickey Mouse lived.
(Laughter)
I got really excited.
My dad, however,
had a slightly different plan.
Frоm Caracas, he he sent us
to Brainerd, Minnesota.

One of the best talks I've ever seen! Thanks you Mariana to teach us many lessons about society!
I live in Brazil and am a singer, and everything you said is a reality. Unfortunately, some people look at others with an empirical gaze, judge them by what they see and do not try to know who they really are. The world is a school and every day we learn to live and get to know each other better.

This speech also show us the importance of presence and support of parents in our life..
Whenever I am having self-doubt and feel very small, I always watch ted talks. Love it.
I remember that when I was a child, my school mates and I were raised with this phrase "We all are equal" then, when I was like 24, I had a conference at work about handicap people and they told us "We all are different, we are not equal, and that is ok". That was mind-blowing and changed my POV.
