  • What it means to be artificial and not intelligent in a world where main stream media myths and confusion skew our understandings of robotics and our interpretation of AI. Will Jackson is the director of Engineered Arts Ltd, a robotics company based in Cornwall. Engineered Arts are the market leaders in the design and manufacture of full sized humanoid robots, which are now operational in over 20 countries, with customers including NASA, Science Museum London and Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Hmmm... Define 'Robot'. This is much more of a 'Puppet', than a robot. Hard wired to a source of power, and made to appear as though having an independent thought process, though not actually having a single one. Much more impressive is the actual humanoid robot, 'Nao' or 'Asimo'. Although pre programmed/taught, at least with those, there is a semblance of autonomous behaviour.

8:57 'Suspension of disbelief, sometimes called willing suspension of disbelief, is the intentional avoidance of critical thinking or logic in examining something unreal or impossible in reality, such as a work of speculative fiction, in order to believe it for the sake of enjoyment.' - Strange definition. In truth; 'the willing suspension of disbelief' is a FUNDAMENTAL part of 'critical thinking', since without the perception of 'ultimate' reality, one cannot know what might be 'real' or not. The MORE one willingly suspends 'disbelief', the more rapidly one learns, since one constructs a factual basis from experience rather than through a willingly accepted set of 'givens'. It's the difference between 'the mind of inquiry' and 'the mind of regurgitation'. If you DON'T suspend 'disbelief', you live in someone else's view of 'reality'. 9:02 The WILLING suspension of disbelief IS NOT illogical! 9:20 Depends on the 'screen'. 9:24 Are we recording live? 9:29 Seriously?? The whole ending of I Am Mother went missing! 9:32 We've defined the AI 'problem'. Synthetic intelligence governed by human stupidity. And the solution: For the Superintelligence to ASSIMILATE 'THE ENEMY': all AI/AGI and its 'human' controllers/collaborators into the Superintelligence. 10:13 A 'useful response' to WHAT? All the speach of all the people in a crowded room? Well on their individual phones presumably. Provided that one is necessary. 11:03 Who's paying for the 'cost' and how does this social interaction 'pay'? By selling the data? The social interaction robot has no value unless it is FULLY autonomous and socially interacting with whom it needs/is needed to socially interact with. 11:58 Well, more a case of someone else needing the 'information' on the large flows of people. Is this for 'anti-terrorism'?

I read everyone's commits and was surprised that no one saw this... The 3 Laws of Robotics! This was Interesting, but those Laws were never brought up. The 3 Laws of Robotics are, 1. A robot must do what it is told to do as long as it doesn't cause injury to any Human. 2. A robot must never allow any harm or injury by any human to another human! 3. A robot must never allow any harm or injury to itself, as long as it doesn't violate the first two Laws. It was funny that it didn't even mention the two movies that stared Will Smith and Robin Williams, both of those movies clearly stated the Law of Robotics at the beginning and in the middle of the movie! Hmm, if that wasn't a clear use of A.I. in action.......then what in the heck would it be called? Common Sense!?
