- Known for its powerful, heavy, long, and perfect waves, Madeira Island is seen by many as the Hawaii of the Atlantic. Surrounded by crystal-clear blue waters and covered lush subtropical vegetation it plays the part all too well. But the absence of big crowds, the fine wine culture, the boulder-riddled beaches, the delicious food and the general look and vibe of Madeira, really sets it all apart. For this trip Nic Von Rupp scored the biggest and better aligned swell we’ve seen here in years. It was a Day of Days at Jardim do Mar, arguably the best big wave pointbreak in the world. Joined by fellow riders, Hawaiian Big Wave Charger, Torrey Meister, Grant “Twiggy” Baker, Miguel Blanco, Lourenço Katzenstein and Portuguese young gun, João Maria Mendonça and with a shooting crew on a boat, it was an unique day captured under a never seen before angle in beyond perfection sort of day. Beautiful video showing everything about Madeira’s amazing atmosphere. Thanks to your video you did a year ago, I chose to go on a surf trip, and it didn’t disappoint at all. I had crazy waves in Paul do Mar and Ponta Paul. Almost alone in the water. I had the chance to met Orlando. The people on the island are very welcoming. Cheers for everything Nic !

Liked Madeira so much that I got my first tattoo of the coordinates of the island on my forearm. Beautiful place , Great food, and super friendly people. Made several friends and looking forward to meeting them again someday. Always tip your waiters and waitresses well

An important thing to note...the wave was even better prior to the construction of the break wall. Fortunately this wave still exists in some form but a good reminder of how development can entirely or partially ruin a wave.

Hey nick I know you surfed figuera do foz , I dnt know if you surfed it big, if you did how does it compare to Madeira. We chatted once before , as I surfed figuera do foz out by the lighthouse down to the river in 1979 with some guys including Graham Nile who you may have heard of. Surprised if you haven’t. He is in his seventies now and I’m 66 this year. Still surfing as is Graham from what I hear still trying o win everything
Your surfing has taken a next step. I am not a surfer but I skate and watcha lot of surfing videos. You working out a lot or just surfing a lot and progressing? You have developed into one of the most technically sound balls to the wall surfers on youtube which means the world. YEWWW
