In this video, we have some fun creating a fake fire pit or fake hot coals with just a few easy materials. This fake fire is great for Halloween as a witches fire! To create this amazing look of hot coals, we use some scrap insulation board, some orange Halloween lights, spray foam, sticks and some paint. However you can use about anything to create this.
We use insulation board as our base but you could use something as simple has cardboard. Then we built of the center a bit with scrap peices of the insulation board, then we attached the lights using hot glue and tape. We made some bigger logs using pool noodles. the process is very simple, you just take spray foam and apply it over the base and over all the lights and while its still wet add things like, Sticks, fake logs, fake bones, what ever you can think of that would make a cool looking fire pit. Once the foam has dried, just base it black with some spray paint, then dry brush the entire thing with some grey paint and then go over that with a dry brush of white paint! and you done! It's honestly that simple!

I've seen a bunch of expanding foam coal pits over the years but this is the first time I've seen someone make one with carved pool noodles. That's super clever! I've also always wondered how feasible it would be to put plastic wrap or a clear bag overtop the light string so you could remove them later if any bulbs need replacing, or if you wanted to use them for something else.

LOL Thanks. You could probably do that with the plastic wrap, I bet it would work. I just won't ever use these lights for anything else. heck these had been sitting around the house for 2 years and never used them until now..

Nice job! I made one about two years ago. I'm still watching videos for more ideas.
I've saw where one creator used old 16 ounce water bottles and stuffed the lights inside of the bottles. They arranged them around as logs and sprayfoamed them. This was done so that if the lights quit working they could replace them.

Awesome! I made a mini one and used battery operated lights on a timer to use for my Halloween Byers Choice dolls. I just used a small bowl the size of the firepit I wanted...turned it upside down, covered it with plastic wrap and sprayed on the foam insulation. When it dried, it was super easy to peel off the plastic wrap. Then just drybrushed black, red and gray paint. Since it's essentially like a upside down spray foam bowl, it gave me space underneath for the lights and battery pack. It came out really good.

Like the mix of ideas, looks great. I agree about the flicking lights. In Australia solar ones are great as don't need to run cords everywhere. But rarely found in orange or flickering despite the recent growth in celebrating Halloween. I need to update the fire under my cauldron so will definitely be stealing most of your idea! Thanks

I got an electric fireplace and the see-through part that simulates cracked burning wood has got a hole in it and I'm gathering ideas on how to either completely remake it or patch the hole.
I am trying to make it see through so I'm not sure exactly how I'm going to do it.
Thanks for giving me ideas though this might work if I have to completely recreate it.
And it also when it comes to shaking a can it's a pretty nifty trick to strap it onto a reciprocating saw blade lol you can shake The living daylights out of it.

The lights appear to glow well enough through the pool noodles and spray foam in the build so you should be OK

Great execution. I imagine it will be pretty convincing in the yard at night. I've been wanting to make one combined with a fog chiller so it will look like smoke is coming from it and spreading across the ground, but my front yard is tiny so I would never use it. Thanks.

Im having such a hard time finding orange pool noodles 😫 Im on a fixed budget but every year I add to my decor, because when i was a kid a family in our town did an awesome haunted house! It was just their yard & porch, but they had spooky music playing you could hear from the end of the tree lined road, so the walk to the house added to the experience. When we got there wed have to walk past coffins & we never knew if or when someone was going to pop up! There were dummys in rocking chairs on the porch & one would always be someone in costume & theyd either moan or chase us 😂 & a hand would pop out of a slit in a curtain on the door & give us candy. Not many go all out anymore & that being my fondest menory of childhood, I like to try to recreate what I can at my house for the kiddos. This year Im adding a cemetery area with fence, fog, gravestones, bones & a zombie that pushes his way up out of the ground while making noises, two witches with a cauldron (just need to source green LEDS & 2 or 3 water misters. Ive also got a animatronic pumpkin that talks & a spidee that drops down out of the trees then pulls itself back up 😊 But Id love to make a faux fire for the witches cauldron. I think it would be the perfect addition!

Yes yes! We are in the same page.. I do what I do because when I was a kid there was a house that had dummy’s with wire attached and they would raise a hand on the dummy then talk through a speaker as the dummy to us kids.. they had other spooky stuff and it was my favorite place to go.. it made memories for me and I loved it! That is exactly why I do this! I know it’s making memories for all kinds of kids for years to come! Thanks for watching and sharing your memories

That is debatable, some say spray foam is super flammable, however i've watched people put a flame to it, it starts to burn and when the flame is removed the flame goes out. That being said anything you make you can spray with a fire retardant and you will be good to go. I've been haunting my home for over 30years and never had a problem with spray foam catching fire.

Not sure with black foam, it may make it harder for the lights to shine through but honestly I don’t know. The can’t even get black spray foam around here to test it with
