It's channels like yours that RUclips was originally all about. Skilled people sharing and teaching people their crafts. With all the garbage on this platform lately its great to see content like yours. Thanks for sharing.
After I hit send, I asked my husband what he thinks of when I use the abbreviation “ODB”... He thought for a second and replied “Old Dirty Bastard from WuTang” 🤣 I knew YOU wouldn’t make that mistake!
A few years ago, I made a ring of stones out of foam, then filled the center with spray foam and orange lights for the embers of a fire under my witch's cauldron... I've been wanting to remake it, and now I can add these to the prop as well! Excellent video! Thank you!
This is a game. changer for me! The drywall saw and wire brush technique puts that realism that ive been looking for! Your channel is my go too gold mind!
Love this! As always, your tutorials are amazing. I'm thinking of using this to upscale my firepit for my witch's cauldron. Add orange and flickering string lights with a base of Great Stuff for coals under the foam logs to make the flame effect and make them pop. Can't wait to use this!
The fastest way would be to throw some red twinkle lights behind them, although it's not the most believable looking. This LED light strip and controller from Prop & Scenery Lights is much more believable: amzn.to/3PbKiBr
Hello, nice to greet you and watch another video with fantastic results. One question ... what you see behind you, is the head of an IG unit? I hope it is for an upcoming video project. 🤞👍
It’s amazing how a white dry-brush layer brings it to “life!” It looks really great! I’m always intimidated doing organic textures, this makes wood texture really doable, so thanks for sharing! So... I was interested in your choice of the order of operations - specifically gluing it all together before applying monster mud and paint, why did you decide to glue it first? I’m thinking the hot glue may hold better on naked foam? Would you do anything differently in a 2nd go? Just curious, thanks for all you do!
You're absolutely correct. Any adhesive is going to bond better when applied to "raw" surfaces. As for doing things differently, I'd have used Gorilla Glue instead of hot glue because my glue gun is at the end of it's life and the glue wasn't really coming out as hot as it should and so I had a few spots detach from one another. I also would have, and still could, carve out the back of my support block to allow for the addition of red twinkle lights to give the look of glowing embers. I may address that in a second video.
Can I ask were so you find that Foam? I have checked Home Depot and Lowe’s and can’t seem to find it any longer do you have any recommendations? Look forward to hearing from you
Great project. I was wondering how to make the logs “glow” like in some of those realistic electric fireplaces... maybe if I carve a hole underneath and put some LED lights inside? What do you guys think!!? Thanks in advance. Greetings from Colombia 🇨🇴
Love the way this one turned out! But man, looks super messy when carving....though I suppose the best projects usually are a bit messy. I noticed you're using the traditional plug-in glue gun - I recently switched to a battery-operated version (18v from Ryobi). The recharable battery makes it a bit heavier, but I really enjoy not being bound by the cord. I saw K&T Halloween using one and had to get one for myself. Might make your propbuilding just a bit easier!
It’s messy, for sure. I had my shop vac near me the whole time. Yeah, my glue gun is junk. Thankfully the team at Surebonder are sending me a new one. I think they feel sorry for me. Lol
@@VanOaksProps I work for the company you bought it from, and I often speak to that gluegun brand's ureliability when people ask for a recommendation. Awesome that Surebonder is hooking you up! Those are the ones Allen Hopps uses.
Ok, and sorry for pointing out the obvious, but why not just use real logs for the fireplace rather than all the mess and wasted time with foam. Plus, real logs would look real. 😅
Sometimes you need something to fit a specific project and organic objects may not work. Or maybe you want to use the same parts year after year and want to know they’ll fit. Maybe you don’t have access to wood without having to purchase more than you need, etc. There’s tons of reasons, so I just figured I’d share how to accomplish it. 👍🏻

Thanks so much for saying that.
I completely agree! In some ways you’re like the haunted Adam Savage Tested Channel! ODB?
@@KerriGilpin Everything I've done so far is a ODB, but maybe I'll shoot the next one more in his style and just narrate as I go.

Don't underestimate him, he's right. I've been a Wu-Tang fan longer than an Adam Savage fan. hahaha But I did know what you meant, too. :-)
I didn't know I needed logs for my display UNTIL NOW!
Thanks for another great tutorial and thanks for sharing your talent with us.
Thanks, Dan!

That would work perfectly. Great idea.
Very nicely done. I am going to be making a fireplace for my witch's hut this year. This could come in real handy. Thanks.
HANDS DOWN my favorite Channel on RUclips. Great job Derek!!!!
Appreciate that

Looks wonderful and thanks for sharing. This can be used in so many different fashions/patterns.
For sure. I always try to make the videos about a technique rather than a specific end product, since there’s so many different ways to haunt.
I plan on using your technique in a miniature fireplace for a play house. Thank you for sharing. ❤ I think I’ll incorporate some lighting as well. 🤗🔥🥰
Very cool especially if you don't have a fire place and want to make a faux one. Looks amazing, great job 🧡🤎💛🍁🍂
Yes! Thank you!
Creative! Just found your channel from a random search🧐😮😁
Welcome!!
Wow.....you have just inspired me to add this to my home fireplace. You rock.
Go for it!
Looks awesome! At Christmas, in the office, we have a fake fireplace mantel to hang the stockings on. This will much less messy than using real logs.
For sure!
Thank you. Another great idea.
Thank you!
now that was COOL!!
would of loved to see
how you used this in
a visual set up!! God bless
Thanks for watching!
Another awesome job
Thank you for the tutorial. I needed to be able to make a fake Yule log for a display. This came in handy. I'm starting with a pool noodle though.
It's coming out great! pool noodle, strategic filing, and a heat gun who would have thought it. Thank you again so much for the inspiration..
Best video sofar! Great tutorial!
Thanks for saying that! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you Sir for another creative video!
It’s my pleasure
They look great!
Thanks, Barry!
very impressed and i loved it
Thanks for checking it out!
That's freaking pretty cool.😍
That helps me building a fake worden log for my terrarium
Amazing job! ❤
Thank you!
Great project!
Thanks!
cool project! Hey, I wanted to add, people can also use the 25 minute drywall mix to have a monster mud that dries really fast!
Great tip!
Awesome as usual, I so look forward to new videos.
More to come!

This is PERFECT for what I want to do. How would you back light these logs to appear as they are burning in the fire place?

Hi! Amazing! What size foam did you use?
I started with 3” thick pieces, but it could be any size.
Just Made a Fake fireplace .. put another log on the fire thanks I like your ideas
Where can I buy thick foam like that? Also, how thick is it? Tks
I’ve been able to find it at Home Depot and Lowe’s in the insulation dept.
This should be enlightening!
Dad joke!
I wanna know where i can get the foam from ?
Home Depot & Lowe’s typically carry it in the home insulation department.

If you google "foamular" you may be able to find a supplier near you. It's getting harder and harder to find in the big box stores.
