  • Lomography's DigitaLIZA Max is a kit of parts (mostly plastic, but reasonably sturdy and well-made) that you can use to scan various kinds of film with your cell phone. Officially, you also can use it with your digital camera by mounting the camera on an old-fashioned copy stand... but who wants to do THAT?!? In this video, I explore a simple hack for a more compact, one-box solution. Remember... this is a HACK, so HACK AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
BONUS HACK: People are going to ask if the platform sags under the weight of the real camera; I measured it with a digital level and it was only 0.1 degree, which is negligible. BUT... the plywood assortment I bought (at an arts & crafts store, BTW) also included some narrower strips. You can cut one of those down to make a support leg that just slides under the front edge of the platform (I made two in different lengths, one for 35mm and one for 120.) The extra support makes the platform extra solid, and it takes only seconds to set it aside when you want to remove the film carrier.
    Q&A --
Q: "What's wrong with using a copy stand instead?"
A: Nothing, and if you want to do it that way, feel free to order one by telegraphing Sears Roebuck for delivery by the Wells Fargo wagon. Seriously, a copy stand is fine (I've got one myself) but it's an extra thing to buy, store, and set up. I wanted to see if I could use the pieces that come with the DigitaLIZA Max and make them work with a real camera.
Q: "I tried your idea with my Fujifilm GFX100, and the camera fell off and got broken and put a kink in my cat's tail when it landed on him. What should I do about that?"
A: Use a smaller, lighter camera, just like it says in the video! Remember, this is a HACK, and you're trying it at your own risk! Sorry about the cat, though...
Q: "Is this cheesy rig really 100% rock-solid, level, and vibration-free?"
A: No, no, and no. It's a hack, remember? On the other hand, I checked it with the level that comes with the DigitaLIZA Max and was surprised to find that it's as level as the stock setup, and my test scans were sharp from corner to corner. If it sags or flexes enough to bother you, feel free to add some bracing (see bonus hack above.)
Q: "Would you like to hear my 1,847 suggestions for improving this project?"
A: I'd rather have you implement them yourself and then make your own video; feel free to link it in the comments! Hacking is about DOING!

I also use a Beseler Negatrans for my 35mm scanning. Great minds etc.
