The character of Tommy Oliver is an iconic ranger and it has been very difficult with the passing of Jason David Frank to repurpose the character. The producers have a tough decision to make as to whether the character can continue to appear in the series.
Power Rangers is an American television series and franchise of the tokusatsu genre, version of Super Sentai Series, a Japanese television series of the same genre. It has been broadcast since 1993. From 2002 to 2009, the franchise was owned by The Walt Disney Company, but was reacquired in 2010 by Haim Saban, its creator and original driving force between Mighty Morphin and Wild Force (the latter created early in production before the sale of Saban Entertainment to Disney). On May 1, 2018, it was confirmed that the franchise was bought by Hasbro.

JJ Oliver should inherit the powers, the same way Trini’s daughter did.
My headcannon just lit up. This should be a whole thing. Like JJ expects to get his powers but doesnt. Maybe turns evil even because of the jealousy and eventually turns good and gets a different power. Like he becomes the gold zeo ranger or something. Or even better, Tommy's powers split and JJ gets on of the ranger powers (green due to the evil aspect) and the other guy gets white. Idk what to do with Black dino and red zeo though lol.
In the comic he does, well the Dragon Shield over his SPD Green suit. It was also a one shot comic, along the lines of old man Logan. Matt is the new Green Ranger, so there’s 2 prospects…
I agree JJ should be the new green ranger they need to use the boy from the dimensions in danger episode of super ninja steel who voiced JJ
I agree that JJ, being the son of Dr. Oliver should inherit Tommy's powers (whether it be the Green, White, Red Zeo or Black Dino Ranger).

No one can and should replace JDF as Tommy Oliver. At least in live action. If it animation loosely based on the boom comic, it would be okay because at least Tommy would still look the same to an extent
Agreed. I really hope they do an animated series. They can make it so good if they actually put a decent budget behind it. I would love for them to give it a darker tone, more like the comics but i doubt they would.

My understanding is that most of these remakes bomb (thundercats for example) because their toys dont sell.
But rather than selling toys to kids, sell high grade figures to the adults watching it. I mean they can still do toys because what kid doesnt like power rangers at some point. But advertise to the adults with the money.
And if the series is actually good, im sure they can make really good money licensing it to a streaming service like Amazon or Netflix.

Hell no, the character of Tommy Oliver should never be replaced because no one could never, ever, ever replace Jason David Frank, so it's better if the character of Tommy Oliver is retired, and that's as simple as that, so people, just that character alone let it be retired

That's gonna be difficult to have Tommy Oliver played by a different actor unless if it's on the same continuity. To me, it wouldn't feel the same.
However in my opinion you can have a new introduced character played by a new talented martial artist actor to be the new Green Ranger and continue the legacy as The Green Ranger but as a new character.
At 50? And at this point the character though important to Power Rangers he only comes back for Anniversary specials to be honest and each season usue has a new team and they've moved the franchise forward without him so to recast for a 50yr old Martial Artist is unnecessary if they are not doing a season.
To recast for a 35th anniversary would require a 55yr old... at this point does he really NEED to be a martial artist?
We thought when the 1st 3 left the franchise wouldn't last and... they found a way.

I don't think they'll deal with it for a while even if Once & Always should carry on... they proved they didn't need him to make a FANTASTIC special.
It could be Tommy’s son or daughter. That could open up some storylines

Professor Oliver for Dino Thunder was actually refreshing and just different and worked. He began a Archeologist and I believe a professor and it was different and mature.
To your point passing his power to his kid is a dope idea. I'd go for it but I'd wait a few years.
To me the best option is having the Green Ranger powers go back to Jason and let's say in season 3 (I wish) of Once & Always have Jason pass it down... either to JJ or his real Daughter.

Dude you're wrong, there's no one who has the same qualities as Jason and they shouldn't look for another actor because no one can play Tommy Oliver like Jason David Frank, u should know that if you're truly a Power Rangers fan , like I am , because the new actor, just could never filed his shoes and it's best that they retired his character, that's my opinion

The Once and Always special was filmed before he died, but he declined to participate in the special as he didn't like the way Power Rangers franchise was going
I've met Jason David frank and he personally said it himself he wouldn't mind if he was recasted but he does enjoy being Tommy Oliver so people need to chill it's ok to recast!
You missed out a total revamp of the series and movies which could pave a whole new timeline or timelines and upscale of the power rangers title/s to a whole new Era

The only difference is the comic book characters are older then Power Rangers plus by now we're used to see another actor play an DC or Marvel superhero but with Power Rangers you with very few exceptions only had the one actor as the ranger.
What if they did something like in Dino thunder where Tommy was stuck as a ranger form but when he comes out of it after finding a cure his molecules changed changing his face but it would be still him deep down

Still way too soon to talk about in my opinion. Even if that's the case, and they do that, then a reboot is better. I think they (Hasbro) are still planning that, quote me if I'm wrong. Plus, after this coming season, we are still not sure what Hasbro will do. Movies been announced yes, but nothing new has been talked about since. So, at the end of the day, it's Hasbro choice what they want to do with the franchise. They said no more using Super Sentai, I'm trying to picture Power Rangers without Super Sentai. unless they go with an alternate way. They have other similar shows they can use, I guess. I can see them going that way like Tokusatsu. I don't know most of you know better than me.
No not a reboot. An animated series makes more sense. Even if Tommy’s voice is different, the spirit and soul, and overall appearance of the character that JDF brought to life should be the same

It can't be me to play that role. I was a big fan of Jason David Frank since I grew up watching Power Rangers. After he passed away, I kept thinking how will Power Rangers move on without Tommy? No one can ever replace Jason David Frank to recast playing Tommy, but we can honor him. Maybe JDF's daughter Jenna can carry on her father's legacy as a Power Ranger someday. R.I.P. Jason David Frank aka Tommy. May the power be with us all.
I completely agree with you. I think they should either kill him off like they did Trini and make Jay Jay the new Green Ranger or continue on with a new character as if it was always that character has always been Tommy. I also very much admired JDF so I am torn but I do not want the MMPR Green Ranger to die

certain characters can be played by different actors but for characters like tommy Oliver to me JDF is and always tommy like that character was made JDF it fit him I don't think they should replace the acter to play tommy retire the character
I do agree with you on that if they do get another actor I hope it's a very good actor someone who can carry on the legacy of Tommy Oliver if they do decide to get another actor it will have to be someone very likable and very skilled if they do decide to go that route and I hope if they do go that route it works out then the actor is likable but that's just my opinion I hope you don't mind have a great day stay safe see you soon
You can’t change the actor unless you reboot the entire franchise. If not then you’d have to pass the powers on to someone else like they did with the GR power in the comics.

I think Michael R Grotto can easily replace JDF who played Young Tommy Oliver in MMPR season 03 now Michael is an adult he can be a Multiverse version of Tommy a way explaining how his face to changed which can be Green and White MMPR , Zeo Red and Black Dino thudner with his Master Morpher.
From the beginning... Jason David Frank being Tommy Oliver🙏🏼 was well perform. And will never be replaced, he is a international icon💯❤🌹🌹. If anyone who wants a used Tommy Oliver for short time, I am not against it. Use a visual effect, as they did with Paul Walker and Fast and Furious😢. Somewhat to say goodbye.

This is just my opinion and an idea of how they could handle it: Soul of the Dragon should be considered canon, and then continued from there. JJ starts out as the green SPD ranger with the dragon shield . Tommy is retired as a ranger so no need to see him again, maybe just mention him occasionally. No need to kill him off , he’s just off duty now . JJ eventually becomes the new green dragon ranger, on the same team as Minh. Billy and Zack remain as mentors on this team , and Rocky / Jason and Kat come back too or only come back sometimes and have younger successors as well. Eventually Billy and Zack can pass the torch as well and now we have a complete new generation MMPR team . They do all the main fighting with the older mentor characters showing up as they choose for support. A whole multi season MMPR series could be based on these events and those thereafter and I’m sure it would be a hit. Older and newer fans would likely accept it . The white ranger power could be passed to another different character, and we could have both green and white on the same MMPR team too. Dino and Thunder Zords used interchangeably. Whole series geared to an older audience, cobra Kai like but still appropriate, pg-13 level .
I'd love for them to just reboot MMPR in a marvel like style like they did in 2017 but this time just better

No, i dont think the actor should be replaced. They should do something like they did in the new special for Trini.
Have his powers move on to someone new. Maybe even have the new Yellow Ranger be part of that story. Like she's making a new team of teenagers with attitude since the first rangers are getting old. Billy and Zack can take more of a mentor role.

There is a solution, in big bad beetleborgs, also from Saban. on of the actors get changed for another one and they in the stories she cast a spell that make her look different but Flabber casted a counterspell so that only the other beetleborgs saw her new face and all the other saw her as she always was. What about something along that line? Don't chew me out if you don't like it, it is just a suggestion.
Probably best have a new character take over as green ranger especially since he has been on that show for so long.
Whom ever they cast (if they recast), many fans will find problems with it, regardless of the actors martial arts skills or not.
In which case they need to cast JJ properly rather than recast Tommy Oliver.
Tommy is one of the oldest human Rangers, being about 40 years old. So they would have to cast to that, something the PR casting team have zero experience in when it comes to casting Rangers, yes people would line up for the chance, but thing is they'd also need to replicate Tommy's fighting style from Dino Thunder to a high degree.
Which is why it's better to cast JJ with serious attention, as he will take the Dragon Coin, then give the other coins to new Rangers.
For recasting the character, it would be easier to reboot the story.

Idk maybe semi retired like use a different actor to play the ranger only on certain occasions special important reasons. It’s not like we get the choice with other actors you mentioned that we think of the character when seeing the actor as those could pick up the mantle of their character again and unfortunately JDF will never be able. His legend will always remain! Finding another actor that can carry this character mantle will be difficult no matter what and I think we should take the time to get it right.

I dunno. I wouldn't mind a recast but It's not exactly NEEDED. I think with him in Aquatar do exactly what was done with the 1st 3. He either retires only to be summoned in costume for special moments or say he had to remain on Aquatar for whatever reason. Right now he's in Aquatar so doing any recast isn't necessary or needed right now.

Since they've kinda done damn near everything for the character Tommy... the character can ride the bench as initially intended by Hasbro since JDF left the franchise just before he passed. (My he rest in peace.) The reason he's in Aquatar was for that reason so they should just stick to the plan.

Well if you're going to replace the actor. It should rightfully go to one of his kids. Ya i know JDF is much older but in the multiverse hes protrayed by several different characters. So its only fair to have one of his kids take over.

I would like someone play Tommy, but for me he has to have a great martial art background to fit in cause Tommy is always training. Even thou jason is gone in real life some can play him. We can use JJ, but you really have to make it sound good how Jj is taking his father place & how Cat is going to take it. But you can't take the green ranger away they still need the dragonzord to help the megazord when needed. Jason Davis Frank is gone I know he will always be my green ranger, but still Tommy do lives own in the comic book & t.v. just tell a good story to keep everyone on track without letting that JDF is gone is real life
