  • The 90s were packed with platforming legends and almost-iconic gaming mascots, but like Tamagotchis and bowl haircuts, not all of them escaped the decade unscathed. Join us in contemplative reflection as we toast the platforming champs that Mario and Sonic don't invite to parties.

There's a book in Skyrim, about a scholar living with Draugr in one of the barrows, he watches them go around maintaining the place and lighting all the candles and torches. As well as giving some of their lifeforce to the sarcophagus of a Dragon Priest. It's explained, in that book, that the ancient draugr were actually much better preserved, some of them still looked alive, but they waste away by giving their life to keep the dragon priests alive.

God, GLOVER is my favorite forgotten platformer mascot, with Vectorman closely behind. The game did have problems, but the music was fantastic, the character is visually appealing in design, and and if refined a bit more, would have likely been more memorable in the long run. The floating platforms might have have contributed to some dislike from people as well. That, and the fact the people porting it to PS1, and PC fucked it up beyond repair causing it to get an even worse rep. It sadly should have just stayed a Nintendo exclusive.
I still have my copy for the N64 I got from a used games store back when the N64 was just recently put out of production. To think, I went there to get Donkey Kong 64, and instead got Glover, and Pokemon Snap. I have no regrets.
The sequel being cancelled was a good thing, though. I feel it was really... REALLY bad. It was losing its' personality, and was starting to very clearly try and copy the likes of Banjo Kazooie, and had it been released, I would have hated it.

Well I am sure that if we had got a proper version of Duke Nukem Forever and not fallen into the hands of those retards over at Gearbox, Duke could have had a decent chance.

    • @JeedyJay

Duke has no chance without a Shadow-Warrior-like redesign. Blaming Gearbox for how poorly his character is now received is wishful thinking.

      +Jeedy Jay
Gearbox certainly didn't do it any favors. If video game history has proven one thing, it's that gamers really dislike unfinished games - yet that is exactly what Gearbox did with one of the most anticipated game releases of all time.
They did the bare minimum required to make the game presentable and shoved it out the door in order to fulfill their contact with Take 2 with minimal time and effort. Worse than that, however, is they actually made the game LESS complete by removing a chunk of the completed campaign to resell as DLC. Former 3D Realms employees have confirmed that the DNF DLC was initially intended to be part of the main story, rather than some stand-alone side missions.
Furthermore, like Duke Nukem 3D before it, DNF was originally intended to receive a final content pass prior to it's release. Basically, once the game was completely done, 3D Realms intended to go back in and added in a final layering of jokes, secrets and easter eggs. Once again Gearbox mostly skipped over that step and even changed the best easter egg already in the game.
The obviously forced Borderlands reference in the underwater level was originally a Big Daddy helmet with the accompanying voice line, "who's your daddy now?" The completed textured model and voice clip are even still present in the game's data files for that level, but no longer referenced.
I'm not saying Duke Nukem Forever would have been a huge success had Gearbox not butchered it for the sake of a quick turnaround on their contract (expectations were just way too high), but they certainly ruined any chance it might have had.
