Hating on Gex is illegal in my country.
hating on Gex is illegal by the laws put down of retro gaming...so is hating on Cool Spot
Poland here and we are agree.
I have been waiting for a revival of this character for so long... I'm thinking an arcady version of Horizon Zero Dawn mixed with Ryan Reynolds and elements of Super Mario Odyssey
Ireland weighing in - Gex has diplomatic immunity
Wait really?
Gex was one of my idols! I still love him! Here's to hoping for an HD remaster...
How would they do the secret level in enter the gecko? The n64 version had a titanic level but the ps1 version had another scream tv level.
They hate everything thats true to gaming for little to no reason I've noticed and then praise other games for the same things they hate
Blinx!? I was young at the time but I enjoyed it while playing it. At the very least I don’t see much issue with Blinx.
Same for Gex while I was playing it. I go guess it could’ve been better but I saw potential in both games, even if a remake might be better.
Also why the (hate) on Evolve. It fell short for the gameplay loop but it was certainly fun while learning until we got bored. Make a better Evolve and it could be a real success right?
I love Gex. It’s some of the best platforming on the n64. I never found him annoying, he didn’t really spit out quips often enough to make it annoying. Plus when he did I found them more funny then anything. With my trusty magnifying glass I can spend the whole day burning ants.
Hey, I loved Gex. ... when I was 10. Definitely won't be testing that nostalgia any time soon.
I did, I found it on GOG for like 50p. It does NOT hold up sadly
I put Gex 2 on my PS Classic and it hold up pretty well.
I will forever fondly remember Gex exploring the Titanic wreckage
Me: *decides to watch the video*
*Gex is on the list*
Also me: Wait, that’s illegal!
The funny thing about Bubsy is that his creator, Michael Berlin actually admitted that playing Sonic for hours on end gave him the inspiration for the gameplay for his game and he actually didn't have much of an idea of what he was doing when he made the games.
I grew up with Gex: Deep Cover Gecko where he was voiced by Cat from Red Dwarf.
That Wild Woody FMV is offensively ugly.
I liked gex😥
I feel like they only like the British gex because they are British.
@@nothing-but-milk9176 yeah thats what i was thinking to
Me to
@@nothing-but-milk9176 well, gex in the UK had good voice acting, it reminded people of James Bond, smooth and cool, the US version he just sounded like a generic annoying tool, listen to comparisons for yourself.
@@nothing-but-milk9176 yep... That's why most of WhatCulture Wrestling hates Undertakers "American Badass" gimmick while the rest of the world loved "The American Badass"
"Don't take career advice from Joe Piscopo."
-Gex, c. 1997
Joe
Who?
Pardon my tongue, darling
That is one powerful piece of machinery.
Would cheech and or Chong report to the front desk?
I must be one of the few who loved and STILL loves Gex.
To me; he's like a lizard version of Deadpool, Bugs Bunny or 80's Raphael from TMNT (due to their tendency to break the 4th wall) and that's why I love the character
Agree with all but Gex, he was and still is a great mascot. The games were great too.
That awkward moment when you watch a Jules list when you mum is in the room.
Omg 😂 I've dealt with this situation way too many times! 😂😂😂
Gex was amazing! Maybe because I'm a Yank, but I love wise cracking mascots
Don’t ever disrespect GEX.
ohmegv He’s disrespecting the American VA, not the PAL region one thankfully
@@Trickehh21 Why?
I can't decide if Jules is my favorite presenter on this channel because of his trademark "your mum" jokes, or for his truly heartwarming and uplifting outros.
GTFO I LOVED GEX!!!
Timestamp pls
@@hydro1089 what do you mean? I played Gex growing up and I liked his games what's more to say?
@@sadtoast6122 i wanted the timestamp of gex's spot, but nvm... i found it.
There is one name that strikes fear in the hearts of gamer's everywhere, and that name is...... BUBSY!!!
Jack Fenda XD
I heard his creator played sonic for days
Bubsy is hard, but good.
Jules has always been my favourite, love his voice and humour, but I love when he gets real at the end of these vids because he sounds so genuine and sincere.
So true. This is so true. :')
Hes the best 😁
Hating Aero the Acro-Bat is illegal in my country. He's Crash Bandicoot's bat cousin!
Correction. "You" hated. Gex was loved..
I was always an Earthworm Jim fan.
Great character.
Dude, I even still waiting pointlessly for another Earthworm Jim game
I have a soft spot for Gex...
Oh good, I was about to get angry about Gex until you specified it wasn't the Leslie Philips version.
Dana is the funny one though he actually does impressions, leslie just sounds like a bored alfred.
@@nothing-but-milk9176 It's fine if you think so, you're entitled to your opinion. Personally though I find Gould _unbearably_ obnoxious and grating, whereas I think Philips' performance has a suave, sophisticated charm that totally sets the character apart from most of the other typical annoying '90's mascot characters.
@@Zomdra idk i just feel like the British one is trying to sell me car insurance....just like all the other 90s car insurance salesman.
@@nothing-but-milk9176 in the end, everyone's entitled to their opinion, right?
'Blinx'
Take that back, he was fun.
'Gex'
You need to stop this heresy right now.
I remember Aero...........as the thing that pops up on the Porky Pig Nightmares game opening screen.
Blinx’s biggest problem to me is that it was more of a puzzle game than a platform game
Hold on, did he just diss Diskey? That guy was my childhood!
That combination of words made me so sad just now
I feel so sorry that you truly never had a childhood
I am extremely pleased by the love and support for our boi, Gex🙌🏼
The best part of Jules' videos is always that mental health awareness message at the end.
Yes. Care about your mental health. Talk to people if you feel bad. Do not isolate yourself. People care.
Hey Jules. Thank you. Thank you for giving us all an empowering message at the end of almost all the videos you narrate/write.
Thank you and everyone else at whatculture, for helping me, with your short little messages at the end, to not give up, that it's okay to be ourselves, that it's fine to fail, to have a bad day, to wake up everyday even if we're suicidal and depressed.
Hey Jules and the rest of the Whatculture crew, you guys have helped me, and I bet millions of others.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
I have been awesome and I will never forget that.
Love you guys.
Wild Woody straight up looked like some sort of bowling alley strike screen abomination.
Jules missing a one per list on the wild woody... guess it was too mainstream xD
What the heck you got against Blinx?? Why do you call him "edgy?"
Blinx was more than just a standard platformer, it was incredible at the time
I didn't even pick up the game until years later, and realized the little guy was lovely. Truly neglected and mismanaged by Microsoft, and ultimately, overshadowed by bigger franchises with massive budgets. But the character itself, is fine.
Both games are awesome!
I know right? he's not an edgy character at all!
Ok, maybe a little bit in the sequal, but not like Shadow the Hedgehog edgy.
Blinx was awespme. The 2nd game was my most favorite.
Master Chief is a darn good mascot lol
Mate the theme song for halo is more iconic than master chief
HERESY!! Lol
The voices and music combined with his green suit made it work
Maybe if you only look at the first game when he had more than one line per speaking section. After that he's a bland piece of sentient armor.
Gex voiced by Dana Gould was fine, opinions are just subjective. What I hated (and was only due to hardware limitations) was the repetition of sound bites that made the jokes eventually become grating, but we have games today that still have this issue.
That last game predicted pucci, I know a jojo reference when I see one.
"Awesome Possum kicks Dr. Machino's butt!" "I'm awesome!" And there's the nostalgia
I was shocked when I saw Gex on the list because my whole family loved the British version. But, yeah, I've tried watching LPs of the US version and it just isn't the same...
I beg to differ, Bubsy should be #1 on the list he is the head greeter in Hell.
No
Conker as an actual mascot
Me: Let me guess. Bubsy is on the list.
Whatculture Gaming mentions Bubsy.
Me: I knew it.
Shame, because Bubsy is pretty good if you know what you're doing (minus the PS1 title and maybe TWSB)
“Let’s take a look at a few blown bulbs” amazing
I never met anyone who hated Gex. He's one of the better mascots in gaming.
Gex was basically Deadpool stuck in a lizard's body.
those messages at the end really hit hard sometimes
true. sometimes I skip them, but I still believe those are very thoughtful from him and very helpful.
@@slick_96 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I honestly didn't know for years what the paperclip was, & I was a kid back then when I first saw him. But it would be a few years before my mom would tell me that it was a paperclip...
I love Bubsy! Claws Encounters was one of my favorite SNES games when I was a kid. I didn't play the other Bubsy games until the past couple of years though. I love them too! (Even Bubsy 3D) The most recently game, Paws on Fire, was great too! Bubsy is on his way up! I really look forward to seeing where the bobcat goes next! Also, I think Dana Gould is a much better voice for Gex. I think it fits his character way better.
Gex was one of my favorite game characters along with Croc when I was a kid..
gex is so underrated and underused imho, a new gex game with levels and bosses inspired by the odiern TV programs could be simply awesome.
OMg I totally forgot about Cool Spot lmaooo
Jules, I'm usually with you guys most of the time, but GEX??? I LOVED THAT SERIES! I wish at least the first game would get a remake like Crash and Spyro. The first GEX was great old school plat forming!
"Where's that punk with the backpack?"
- Gex©
Oh bubsy..... OHHHH BUBSY
I think that Domino's Pizza's mascot the Noid made it into a video game, does he count?
Great video but surprised to not see the Noid for Yo Noid on here. Yeah the old Dominos pizza mascot had a video game for the NES and as a child I owned it. It was something else, that’s for sure.
To be fair, while, yes Cool Spot is in a couple of video games, really he's a beverage mascot not a video game mascot. You're reaching here Jules.
It seems to come down to this age old "How dare they use video games to advertise products .. consumerism at it's worst", totally forgetting that a video game is a consumer product in the first place. During that era, product placement in games was a fairly new thing as, much like movies, software houses realised they could help their budget by taking on in game advertising or sewing up a deal to bring to life a product mascot (like you say) into a video game.
Even today we still see this with things like advertising boards in racing games or things like the blatant product placement of Monster in Death Stranding. None of this detracts from the game.
The fact is, making a video game adaptation of a product mascot is not really that different to making a game adaptation of a TV, Film or comic book.
@@CapHowdy yep, it started with a glancing mention of Pizza Hut it TMNT 2 to Cup of Noodles being a questline in Final Fantasy XV. But hey, Yo Noid was a pretty decent game.
Gex was osum what the hell wer you smooking????
Learn how to spell.
The fact that the most comedic if us, dark comedy or otherwise, can be such a nice person through the jokes and hilarious one liners makes the world all the better. Thank you Jules.
So Karnov killed people for money... and you're SURPRISED that he ended up being a villain?
So its true.... i'm the only one who does like Gex...
Naa everyone loves gex they just like the boring british version and dislike the funny one.
Alot of people forget there's two versions of the second and third game. I've played both. My recommendations to play is American version for second game, voice actor puts so much effort into the role and actually comes off as funny, British is kinda monotoned and stiff with the jokes. Third game has to be British however as gex is voiced by the actor who played the cat from British sitcom red dwarf and it just works. Every line is rememberable, so much life is given to the character, where the American version is weirdly bored of the role and doesn't care much.
I love Gex & have played all his games! ~throws a durian at you~
No one:
Nobody ever:
Let's reboot Bubsy!
One of my favourite things about Jules narrating a video (apart from the great mental health messages) is when he describes something as garbage (garbaahj) 😂 gets me every time
The last one...kills enemies by sitting on their faces...
Big mood
I enjoyed that Cool Spot game on the Genesis when I was a kid. For some reason I liked playing a game based on a Soda I liked. There was also a Chester Cheetah game out there around the same time...you can guess why I played that too.
#3
I will fight you, beard-boy.
“So in many ways, Aero is the archetypal video-game mascot, and therefore he’s archetypally-“
“A whole hazelnut dipped in smooth, chocolatey cream.”
Frickin’ ads, man.
Gex > Mario 64. You know it's true. Does Mario talk in outdated references, and climb walls? Yeah, exactly, now you know how Ross from Friends felt at Kurt Cobain's Christmas Party
Not Gex!
Apparently there's a really weird easter egg where the mermaid in the pencil game forgets to put on a shirt.
I forgot Blinx even existed... I loved that game as a kid. Same with Gex.
I wonder why Alex Kidd was never given another chance. Just an appearance in that Sonic racing game
He did have six games including an arcade machine one I believe. Most people only remember the first one as it was built into the Master System, so everyone who had one had it.
True that!!
You are underselling Spot, you didn't mention the amazingly fun epic game of "Spot Goes to Hollywood". Lots of childhood memories for me there.
I grew up in the 90s and literally the only one of those games I played was cool spots and I only rented it from Hollywood video. Hollywood video was just like Blockbuster video but there weren't as many of them
I miss gex so much. In the UK we also got Danny john Jules (the cat from red dwarf) and dont know about this Dana person. my 10 year old self loved it. The levels in deep cover gecko were so varied and loads to do. Incidentally, as m7ch as I also loved him, croc was a pretty half arsed immitator
We could add Vectorman. Robot who blasts other robots while trying to be cool. Didn't get past Genesis with his first and second games while Megaman had his 7th game on the SNES.
Dana Gould was memorable! It's always tail time for me ;D
I liked Cool Spot. I also 7 Up.
I was gonna say the same thing; although as I kid I naively didn't even know it was a 7up advert... somehow 😂 Kid me 1 - Faceless corporations 0 👍
That wild woody bit is objectively the best and most culturally significant minute of youtube in existence.
Microsoft actually has other mascots in Japan, Mr Kyle for example, who was a dolphin, can't find a pic sadly
Probably couldn't find it because your searching for the wrong name. it's Kairu the Dolphin and she was the animated assistant for a Japanese version of Microsoft Office.
@@demikus Thanks I only know it from an anime and it is subbed as Kyle
Interesting, may have been Mr. Kyle for that anime to act as parody and not step on any toes for copyright reasons
@@demikus Nah it's a subs thing, just checked the scene they mention him in, it is Kairu-kun in the pronunciation, Mr.Kyle in the subs
What about the bunny and weasel from whiplash I'm the only one that remembers that game
As you say, Cool spot on the Gameboy was a reskin, However, you failed to mention Spot goes to Hollywood. A true sequel, in isometric 3D, that was SO much better than the first game.
Never played Gex but Dana Gould is actually a damn fine comedian.
He's the best one
I just checked out the voices (there's all three on youtube). Honestly, I'd say Dana is a good voice. The English voice is incredibly serious, it doesn't fit the snappy gecko I played. And the less said about Danny's voice over.... It's just soooooo bad. It is literally just Kat from Red Dwarf. That's it.
I could have sworn I've seen karnov in streets of rage
You might have been better off naming this "mascots who simply couldn't keep up". You're not really listing a lot of reasons to hate most of these mascots.
I do not agree with your point on bats at all Jules. They are not cool. They’re wings are gross and leathery. They look like birds possessed by demons. They’re faces are horrible (especially the teeth). The only part I agree with is the part about them liking bananas.
Personal opinion lol i love bats
Good for you but I despise the things
5:15 I mean, apart from the megadrive bit, I'm pretty sure you also just described Crash Bandicoot.
Best part about Awesome Possum was the short theme song - "Awesome Possum kicks Dr Machino's butt...I'm awesome!" I honestly remember nothing about the gameplay.
To this day I get the music from Cool Spot's Wall level stuck in my head.
When Blinx is called a 4D game, even though it's a 3D platformer, the 4D is a joke, referring to time, the fourth dimension.
It might just be the Nostalgia talking, but I absolutely loved playing Cool Spot when it came out.
But Gex helps us save hundreds on car insurance how can you hate him?
I mean, you can't go wrong with the master chief as your mascot.
A wise gecko once said
“It’s tail time”
Evolve was good if you took the time to play it... ESPECIALLY with friends!!! I will say offset games have a hard time because no one wants to be overwhelmed and if people played it more they'd realize that it really was fun and great in so many aspects! However, I will say that I do miss the golden age of turn based strategy games and Strategy/Sims! Everything from Black & White to Age of Empires!
I loved Bubsy and Bubsy II as a kid!!! Every other installment was sheer arse, but those first two were sooooo good!!!
...but that Captain Crunch game was pretty cool though, rights guys? Right? The one where you helped a Crunchling grow into an awesome skateboarder with the help of a balanced breakfast? Right?!
Blinx and Gex are my all time favorite underrated characters. How the heck is Blinx "edgy"?
Hey, Karnov is the main antagonist in JCvanDamme "the Quest"
Heh I liked Blinx (show casing the Xbox hardrive), but of course M$ just dropped him after 1 game.
Edit: there was a second game on the original Xbox, who knew?
Looking at the gameplay from both, it's a bloody crime M$ didn't support the little fella through the next generations.
This is like watching a Top 10 list at Rupert Everett's house
These bad video game mascots are great examples of what a maggot basically is.
