- As part of our continuing series "On the Road," Steve Hartman meets Jim Gagnon who's makes a genuine effort to reach out and touch someone. The 87-year-old retired salesman celebrates birthdays of people he doesn't even know. Steve Hartman reports.
What a genuine guy
An amazing story. This man chooses to bless someone's day by wishing them a happy birthday. A little love to show caring about others goes along way.
My Grandfather would call and sing happy birthday off key for each one of our family members and his friends birthdays. Since he died I've been carrying on the tradition. Birthdays are super important and should always be celebrates.
This guy is a machine of gratitude which is one of the best things a person can have. When you thank a lot, you get a lot in return.

My patners cousin hasn't just been calling me on my birthday since 31 yrs, he also plays Harmonica to me on the phone when he calls. He is now 82 yrs old lives in Hamburg Germany

aw sweet. I live in Hamburg as well. I have lived here for most of my near 17 year old life. (from 2009-2011) though I lived in Brussels, Belgium, but now since August 2011 I am back in Hamburg, I lived in Brussels for almost exactly 2 years.
I failed to mention that I was born here, but ig that is implied by what I wrote. I have an Italian name because my father is Italian, my mother is also German (born in a different region though in Germany)
well so I am German/Italian, I keep on. missing off some of the details it seems in my messages hehe, but they are ones I usually in some way imply by what I wrote previously hehe.

I was LUCKY enough to meet Jim about 5 years ago. I spent New Years Eve with him for a few hours. He has called me every year since then. CBS should do another story about Jim. His story is truly wonderful😬. His birthday is January 4th
Good to know! Thanks for sharing! My question is: how do people who just met this guy have the trust to just give a stranger their phone number?? And not just one person, but hundreds of people just give their phone number to a complete stranger?? He must convince people somehow??
He was a headstone salesman. So people would call looking for a headstone. Back then when people married for life, they would print the deceased and the alive person on the headstone. So he knew their phone number and birthday. He just asked me if he could have my phone number and birthday. I kinda was weirded out for a second or two until he explained what he had been doing for the last 30 years. He has bible sized books with names and phone numbers in them. It’s crazy! And he remembers everything about you. He doesn’t have notes next to your name.

I lived there for 10 years. The people are generally good (far better than my former home state of Arizona) Long cold winters but one generally gets used to it.

Steve Hartman's "On the Road" is seriously as good as a small documentary can be.
There are only a few others in the world on the same level and that is Oddgeir Bruaset and Sweden's Tom Alandh.

To be honest if I got a call from him I'd love to keep in touch with him he seems like a nice guy and I'm sure he's got lots of cool stories

Whether he knows these people or not hes doing genuine good. Some of these people probably dont speak to a soul for prolonged periods of time. What a kind generous man.

No I tried to live by those two girls love thy neighbor as yourself I love your God with all your heart mind and soul.
The second part is not always easy there are times where you get discouraged and you feel like you can't continue with whatever you're going through but after 18 years of serving in Taiwan I trust that my faith in God is because of Jesus
