- In this installment of our series, "A More Perfect Union," we take a look at an unexpected but powerful friendship. See how an 82-year-old widower was touched by an innocent question of a 4-year-old in the canned food aisle of a grocery store, just when he needed it most. Steve Hartman reports.
He said he had no purpose to live and now he says "watching her grow up"

Tara Murphy I think it’s beautiful. Sad he passed yes but at the same time I’m happy he spent his last days with love in his heart. I’m especially happy he is now reunited with the love of his life.
that's sad, but i am happy he got a last hug in. (also, yes, i'm convinced his wife decided "you need to go out on a HAPPY note if your heart doesn't melt for this kiddo you aren't the dude i married" and helped arrange their first meeting and gave him a big hug and kiss when they met back up in heaven/valhalla/etc.)

That's awful. But on the bright side.....he spent the last of his time on earth with the love he deserved. Nora was definitely a gift from his wife and God. I hope Nora never ever forgets how much this meant to him

I’m so glad that mom made sure to keep their connection alive and let them have a friendship. That mom is a good momma and she has an amazing daughter. That little girl is an earth angel!

I met a man like this when I was about 16. I took a new job and was going through a lot and he was just accepting and loving. We’re great friends to this day. Miss him now, gonna shoot him a phone call after watching this.

I remember my “old person” I was 14 though. Her name was Ruth and she had a inoperable brain tumour, but I loved sitting in church with her and giving her cuddles. I would sit and cry with her. When she passed I had already moved, but it broke my heart when I found out, I made sure to go visit her husband at church. I do really miss her, and I hope she’s found peace❤️
This little angel gave this man peace. He did not die bitter and empty.

I have lived in my apartment for 2 years now and my son has grown a bond with a little old lady named Ms.Hellen. Ms.Hellen lives alone and doesn't get around well but when Isaac walks in the door I can see her come alive, the smile and energy she gives off is heartwarming and I enjoy going over and visiting her. She gets candy and treats for him she's just such a wonderful woman we love Ms.Hellen ❤️

This reminds me of my “old person” when I was a kid. His name was Harold and he owned a stand next to my parents at the farmer’s market. Never had any grandkids of his own. I’d show up to his stand every single day with drawings or little craft projects. He eventually died from old age. Miss ya, Harold ❤️

Those that forget or neglect to take care of their elderly members ESPECIALLY THEIR OWN FAMILY(Parents and if possible their grandparents) have no compassion must have miserable souls. Also, they need to have reality check and realize they too will be elderly themselves one day. What goes around comes around.
Dan's kids and grandkids are too busy for him so Nora was sent to him. I hope he lives to see her into her teens. So sad that his wife passed away and wasn't there too. She would have loved every minute of this.

Sometimes you can be around family and friends who love you, but still be depressed. Sometimes, something unexpected helps you come back from the saddness. I consider why he could be alone, but instead if feeling sad and speculating about why he was alone, I'm glad he has friends who make him light up with joy now. My point, don't be sad, be happy they're all happy now 💖
Angels come in many forms.. she broke through that man’s rough and tough exterior, and just said I’m gonna be kind. The lord puts folks in our lives. The mom allowing the relationship to blossom is amazing

Unlike anyone else a child has nothing to gain from a friendship with an older person except love and affection some others may have other motives sometimes financial and take advantage. His wife wanted to protect him so sent an innocent child who could do him no harm.

You are so right! Relationships with older people a wonderful thing to help encourage and cultivate for our children. She does deserve a lot of credit, but I do agree the Holy Spirit seems to have been working here. When I was young, in the 1960s, I found the neighborhood "old lady" in both of the towns where I grew up. When my child was little, he also found a special friendship with a neighborhood man. They had much to offer one another!

Children have this 6th sense or something. I've witnessed it twice, where a child randomly goes up to a stranger and hugs them just to later find out that that the person desperately needed some love.

I had an "old person" when I was 10. He moved into the house next door and I saw him struggling to get a package. I begged my mom to let me help him and we have been very close since then. Everyday I came home from school he was outside ready to say hi to me. We got him a garden for Christmas and I helped him take care of it every day. We started doing vacations together, we did holidays, birthdays, dinners, everything. Its like ther's a hole in my life and he was made to fill that empty space!
She saved this man’s life. Please call elderly family members, visit them, listen to them. Don’t let them be forgotten and thrown away. Time is precious.

Some of the most transformational relationships I had as a child was with elderly. I didn't have my own grandparents but I remember craving that connection with my own old people.

God bless that encounter and everyday after, my grandfather only made it 5 months after my grandmother died.
@@frankieb9444 I cared for an elderly couple where everyone was expecting him to pass first; his wife was was spry and spunky, he was a bit in decline (still had months to years left though). He was a lovable guy, she came off a little standoffish, she had resting bi*ch face. Well, she had a heart attack one night and passed. It was hard for him. They had her funeral in short order, and he started getting all his affairs in order.
2 weeks later he passed away easily, no need for a morphine rotation, he just passed unexpectedly.
He couldn't live without her.

My grandpa for 2 years was in the state this man was in.. He died right before his 70th birthday last year.. I tried my best for him, but he missed her too much. He's with my grandma now, and while my family is much, much smaller, I can rest knowing He's not hurting and missing her anymore. I'm glad this guy found a little buddy to keep him going.

In high school I was assigned to do a WWII paper with an old person for my school newspaper. A neighbor lady in her 80s who had never acknowledged me lived two doors down. When I asked her for an interview, she was ecstatic. We were friends until she died a few years later. I got choked up remembering her watching this video. Thanks.

So heart warming, beautiful story
I met my “old person” at church when I was Nora’s age. Half the time, we couldn’t get through a sermon without him turning around, looking at me and popping his dentures out as a way to get me to laugh really loud. He’d arrive at church 30 minutes early, wait for me to finish helping my grandma clean up her Sunday school class, and we’d go set up for children’s church. We’d meet after church for lunch. He’d color on the kid’s menu with me. He helped me learn how to read really early on. Help me sound out really big words. Was sure to let me know that I was unstoppable. That I could do ANYTHING.
I’m 25, and my “old person” is gone now. But I could never be sad, because he taught me so much. Certainly taught me that you can have a bit of fun in serious situations. He was the church jokester.
At his memorial, they played a video of him popping out his dentures. Out of the 300 that attended, some giggled, but they were all looking at me. I was the one cracking up. That then lightened the mood, and everyone knew they could actually laugh. His wife looked back at me, mouthing a thank you. I didn’t realize that was a relief she needed in the moment.

We ALL actually have that power! We only have to step out if what’s considered the norm, and do what we feel, the way we did as children! 😀
That is because both children and pets are both untainted by the ugliness of the world so I believe their connection to the spiritual world is still intact

Working as a cashier at 19 and absolutely hating my life and my existence, a mom with her three children come through my line. Her around 4 year old daughter immediately starts asking me what my name is, if she can see my tattoos, tells me I’m beautiful. Then I had to switch stores for a little while, and after 4 months my first day back that family comes in again and she runs up to me and gives me a big hug. I think the universe was sending her to me in my dark moments :)

This happened to me last year. I had gotten some bad news from my Dr. and stopped at the store on my way home. A little girl riding past me in the cart reached out and touched my arm. She told her Grandma to stop and reached over and took my hand. I was shocked, she had the biggest angelic grin as she excitedly told me her name was Anna. Well, I couldn't help but smile back and tell her my name. For the next 5 or 6 min she told me all about her life experiences as a 3 year old. She told me jokes, we sang cartoon theme songs right there in the cereal isle of Kroger's. She was so delightful that i'd forgotten my sour mood. Her mom joined us and we discovered we have a lot in common. The whole family have become my friends. Anna comes to play dates with my niece. They will be pirate princesses when they grow up.

In 2019, 10 days after I left the hospital after a sucide attempt. Had to get stitches ect and felt so embarrassed. days later I was waking in the grocery store and a little boy looked at me smiled and waved with almost a sad little face I guess cuz I looked so depressed but he waved at me smiling and hopeful with sympathy look like he knew. Idk I almost felt like crying right there.

I already miss this heroic man. He isn’t with us now but he can access so many of us in spirit. He is a guardian angel now.

So many people just forget older people. Like this man said he has grandchildren but they are grown. That shouldn't stop the love from flowing. People are always in such a hurry and often so self-centered. If we all slowed down and truly looked around at the world around us and really looked closely at people imagine what we would see. Imagine what our kindness would do to change the world.
