  • Land Rover Defender Hard Top is a ulitily version of the British off roader. It's available as the 90 or 110 body length, and it offers advanced off road capability and a secure cargo area. The Land Rover Defender Hard Top is something between a van and a pickup truck.

    I should mention that at least in the UK, the HardTop is classified for tax reasons as a commercial vehicle and therefore the VAT can be reclaimed by eligible businesses, which includes most farmers, builders and so on. The same is true of four door pickups as long as they are rated to carry a ton. This is where Grenadier becomes uncompetitive. It only carries 600kgs even as a pickup so the VAT is not recoverable

    Excellent review. Many thanks. Very informative. I had Disco 5 commercial, but removed the bulkhead panel so I could straight thru load 3m lengths of timber.. made a massive difference to functionality…

    That Defender really looks in its elements in steel wheels. Love them!

    Phew, thank god that tent wasn't that shower you were in... totally agree with your comment about the steel wheels. They are so retro and honest. Earthy. But then how earthy can you be when the price starts at 78k CAD....

    Great review, this car is a really interesting version.

    Thanks for the review Marek. Steelies for the win :)
    Like you said, this vehicle seems really niche, and there's also Land Rover's reputation for (un)reliability - not sure what kind of business can justify it. However, if I was rich, had no friends, owned big dogs and spent large amounts of time away from civilisation I could definitely see myself in one of these. With the steelies of course.

    A friend just took delivery of a 90 Hardtop the day before yesterday. I saw it yesterday. He got a fairly basic black one on alloys, cloth manual seats, centre console, the small central screen and 250hp diesel engine on coil springs. Tow hitch of course. He intends to fit mudflaps and convert it to have two occasional use rear seats which will require the removal of the plastic bulkhead. He wants it as a nippy runabout that is easy to park. Personally I have no such issue with parking and have taken delivery, only three weeks ago, of a Ford Ranger Wildtrak 2.0 diesel with the electric load cover. This suits me far better and has factory fit proper rear seats, four doors and can carry a ton. Far better specification for far less cost that the Defender. Everyone has different tastes and the world would be very boring if we all fancied the same things.

      I remember the days, when those rear side mounted jumpseats were a thing. Assuming your friend removes the bulkhead, and instals them, are such seats even legal? Also, won't removing the bulkhead end his right to reclaim VAT? Assuming he's bought it for business use.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 9 месяцев назад

      @@MarekDrivesENG He is having a specialist company do the conversion with forward facing seats but is not installing side windows, so who in the tax office will know? It is booked for a December conversion. Hardly anyone will use the rear seats just like my Rangers.

      I see. In Poland when you get your MOT the inspector will also check, whether the car meets homologation requirements, in this case if the bulkhead's been removed and seats installed, your car would not pass MOT. Similarly, if stopped by the police, it says in the registration it's a commercial vehicle registered for only 2 (3) passengers.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 9 месяцев назад

      @@MarekDrivesENG Your police have less criminals to chase than UK ones! LOL. Not sure how it would pass the MOT, but that is three years away and it probably depends on who you know to some extent. There is always the option of officially changing the vehicle to a passenger carrier and I doubt whether the registration authority talks to the tax/VAT authorities. Not my problem anyway but I know that this is not a rare conversion in the UK.

    I had a grenadier on order but had to cancel it when I realised it’s not HMRC recognised (only DVLA) so the vat was not reclaimable , so I purchased the 110 commercial which I have to say is brilliant. I do prefer the look of the grenadier aesthetically but big own goal by ineos as they have lost a big chunk of business owners . Even the 2 seat grenadier isn’t recognised by HMRC (shame) ineos are advertising it as a commercial so very misleading on their part . Iv ordered a 2nd 110 hardtop for my business as they are perfect for my requirements

    Hate to say it, but this vehicle seems pretty pointless and rather expensive. Niche indeed.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 9 месяцев назад

      Depends to an extent on whether you need to tow 3.5 tons and prefer a sporty shorty to a 130” wheelbase pickup truck for which you have no need for the 1 ton cargo capacity. Everybody’s need and want are different. Vive la difference.

    • @misme2000
      @misme2000 9 месяцев назад

      That’s why you have a commercial version, little bit less expensive, still completely pointless…
      (What great off-road vehicle you can’t tow longer than 10 minutes because it will kill the transmission, so needing a flatbed truck. When using the rooftop tent for a couple of days, opening the doors, battery dying of the electronics, and then needing a technician with a laptop to reset, because only needing a battery recharge would be stupid)

    Rich farmers will drive a range rover, this is for builders, I would just go for the 5 seater

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 9 месяцев назад

      Rich farmers and builders do not spend their money easily. My friend who has just bought a 90 Hardtop also has a BMW X7 and a big fleet of other vehicles including old Land Cruiser, old Pajero, Ford Ranger and new Hi-Lux for the family and home core business plus a fleet of pickups and service vans driven by staff rather than family.
