- Rather unusually Land Rover makes two 3-row versions of the Defender. One with an "emergency" way-back and one with a "real" 3rd row, today we check out the smaller of the two which isn’t as small as you might be thinking…

i drive a defender 110 irl, it’s a fun car to drive and it hasn’t had much problems. in terms of usability, it’s extremely capable and manuverable
So what problems did u have? And what MY is it?
@@Unknownuser0515 its a 2021, the only issue we had was the windshield glass breaking (common issue with defenders), the tire pressure sensors going off, and some screen bugs
@@nat3198 how long did it take to replace window?
@@ryanjcoon1 took a couple of months to get a replacement but i assume now it should be less because they are making a lot of defenders now
@@nat3198 have you had any other issues? how long have you had yours? I have considered a used 2020 but reliability comments have be questioning.
As someone who is also 6’5”, I appreciate that you show how someone tall could fit in some of these vehicles. Going forward, would like to hear a line about about their thoughts on driver comfort in these reviews. Other than Mike Danger (6’4, KBB), there really aren’t many tall car journalists out there.
There are 4 taillights in the rear because of European regulatory standards indicating that you must be able to see both sets of taillights at certain angles (the spare tire would be blocking it if it weren’t for the small ones on the outside)
third row seating is practically not usable. Thanks for sharing!
Waste of money its a joke dad ....' I can drive my defender has room( not) for 7 "
Have my Defender 2 years now. Love it.
How's your headlights?
they are fine. No problems with the LED's going out. Haven't had one problem with my Defender. My Bronco however I had to lemon law it after 2 months lol@@TheGopNik___
i’m thinking of getting a defender but people say that its not a reliable car, thats the only thing that’s making me question it. what do you think? and would you recommend it for a lady to drive?
highly recommend a Defender. I love it. You will also love it. @@taimalmheiri
I really love that the front row HVAC vents are located above the screen so you can choose to point the air at your face (vs below the screen where the vents end up cooking or freezing your knuckles.)
Great review! I love my Defender but part delays are insane. A lady rear ended me and my truck is projected to be in the shop for 4 months. It’s been 2 so far. Insane!
It is definitely the first time Alex is looking tiny standing against a car
Alex, At least you will have the video evidence if you ever have to make a workers compensation claim for injuries sustained in an undersized third row. 😉🤣
The 130 for 3rd row is a better option. There is a trick for the 130 to look better, install the side ladder at the end of the roof rack (you hv to do some modification on the mounting side), it will balance the rear proportion. with some rear-end stickers, it will look as great as the 110.
With all that headroom in third row, and considering you are not short, they should have raised those seats up a few inches. Would have given a more normal seating position in the third row.
well that is what the defender 130 is for, although jokingly, they should have made a defender 150 with 6 doors of practicality
That would've messed up the storage space. The 3rd row is courtesy for kids and your girlfriends meddling friends who are hopefully light weights.
Love my Defender 90
Great review! Would love for you to test out the 90 with the front jump seat also if you ever get a chance!
The JGC is not really cheap like you said if you compared Apple to Apple. When u look for the grand Cherokee air suspension and 2 speed transfer case, it’s already 70k in the summit or overland, and u still have to suffer with the under power pentastar and no locker . It’s cheaper to go defender at that point
Any way you slice it, the GCL is going to be less. The top trims may get to almost 80, but adding that much leather and all the gadgets to the Defender put you way over and you can't get features like the highway drive assist, night vision, or passenger screen on the LR.
@@AAutoBuyersGuideif u r only going for luxury leather and screen, yes jgc could be cheaper. I cross-shopped them last year but $83k summit reserve 3rd row at dealer had all the options but it’s still stuck with the underpowered 3.6pentastar and hydra trac ii with no rear locker. I chose the defender 130 base yes it doesn’t have that much screens and less leather on the dash but is only $76k with the detuned turbo 6 it’s still fast and I have locker and off-road stuff.
I am sure the long-term reliability will be stellar since Land Rover is the British Toyota.
🤣 🤣 🤣
😂😅😂😅😮
The only people really worried about long term reliability on these are the wanna-be third and fourth owners who actually can't afford to upkeep luxury cars. Most are leased.
@@th003g Not true, even people who buy or lease new have to worry about terrible reliability. Look at what happened to TFL guys when they got one brand new. Maybe it was early production issues but it was pretty bad.
@@iko3 tfl bought an early production Defender then the dealer messed up. Doug Demuro had one and only had a sunroof issue after 30k miles.
So damned attractive. Sorry, with the arrival of the new GX, this doesn't seem as good a choice. I really don't want to visit my dealer as often as the Defender (or Sport) will demand.
The gx looks worse and the interior looks cheaper than the defender. And of course no v8
@@naveenthemachine I like the Defender interior as well. It comes with a standard turbid 6 cylinder for the same price level. The GX interior's fine, especially when driving a reliable and well appointed vehicle.
@@ktpinnacle but the gx can get expensive and it doesn’t scream luxury. It screams more Toyota than real luxury
@@naveenthemachine I think that's intentional to capture people that really intend to get it dirty, but want some creature comforts. You can take the Defender into strong V8 territory and you're at $120K. I think this would top out at $85K. If someone wants more coddling, wants Lexus branding and reliability and is willing to pay more, they are likely to go to the LX.
@@ktpinnacle the lexus has horrible approach and departure angles..not even air suspension..its just a toy
A very close competitor to the Defender is the new Lexus GX
And after 100k miles when the Defender will often been seen in it's natural habitat of either on the back of a tow truck or in the shop the GX will just keep going and going.
Thank you Alex!!! I was hoping for amber turn signals. I wish more manufacturers would do this and stop cheaping out. Anyway great review.
Very nice car and I don't see any reason why not to get it in the 3.0L Diesel. The torque is through the roof and fuel economy is brilliant.
I know this is unreliable, But I have to buy this.
Alex, I hope you’re gonna do a comparison between your INEOS, Lexus GX, Defender, GC L, and maybe Sequoia
The gx already loses to the defender
@@naveenthemachine depends on what you want to use them for.
@@naveenthemachine ur late to the off roading party
@@naveenthemachine
Not when it comes to reliability.
@@rickjohnson2859 but that shouldn’t even matter at this point
Amazing, only an inch longer than my old first gen Highlander, which is two steps smaller than current.
Not a single mention about reliability Alex?. That aside, it's gorgeous and a Grand Cherokee doesn't stir your emotions like a Land Rover.
As I own an X-H2, I’d get an x100v used for a hopefully tanking price at $900 or less. Here’s to hoping.
Man my dad has the Defender 110 and man the best part is the back ooh you will fall asleep in 1 second!
Looks to have the same size 3rd row as the Mitsubishi Outlander. Not that people will cross-shop those, but it works as a good size reference. (I agree with another commenter who said that LR could have raised that 3rd row higher for more comfort, which the high roof would not impede.)
The guys over at TFT had lots of problems with theirs 1-2 years ago. Have they worked out all the kinks yet?
I think those were issues caused by the dealership. IIRC they cut the wrong wire and the car had just been released so nobody knew the fix. They made it right though when they got them another car.
@@th003gand TFT are big Landy fans.
Alex, thank you for your usual thorough review, it was great! How would you rank this and the Grand Cherokee L with regards to reliability?
Question: at 3:51 you say it's shorter than an X5 but the chart at the bottom of the screen shows it being longer. Did you mean shorter than an X7 or am I missing something? Not a big deal, I'm just trying to get a sense of the size and I'm familiar with the X5 (not so much the X7.)
I was wondering the same thing.
I believe it's because of the 10" for the spare tire. The chart indicates the measurement includes that figure.
But we don't know for sure until Alex responds.
Once again, very good review!
New GX will eat up Defender and Durango sales
No it won’t. The gx looks ugly and the interior is horrible. Lexus reliability is a thing of the past now
@@naveenthemachineI guess we’ll see how your sales prediction pans out in the coming months.
Let's be real ur only calling the gx ugly and horrible because its a lexus.
@huanronghu4432 he may be a bit much but this is more luxurious than the new Lexus offerings. I don't think anyone has doubts about that. Air suspension, interior materials are a step above the GX.
@@naveenthemachine🤣🤣🤣. The Lexus GX will still be running ten years from now and your Land Rover will be still be in the shop waiting for its third engine or transmission.
Land Rover provides loaners. Jeep not so much. They say they do, but they never have any to lend. I chose the 110 for this reason.
I"m currently in a 130 as a loaner for my Jag F-Type R; so far so good...
My only complaint about the defender is the abysmal rear reverse light.
surprised the LR Discovery 5 wasn't mentioned at all. there is definitely some cross shopping between the two. with the Disco5 being a more urban, more luxe, less utilitarian ride yet still great to take to the mountains. Same 4x4 drive train and air suspension (though worse angles), better interior, better MPG etc. Odd omission.
Wouldn't the new Lexus GX be a worthy competitor?
Probably filmed this before the gx came out
The average peasant doesn't understand Land Rovers. They keep harping on about how unreliable they are when it's actually a feature. The Brits take tradition very seriously and Land Rovers have always been traditionally unreliable. They don't make unreliable cars by mistake, they make it because tradition demands it.
I just finished The Crown on Netflix so I know what I am talking about.
I’m surprised you released this now without discussing the new Lexus GX. That’s the comparison: GX/LC, Grand Cherokee, and Defender. All more off road capable than the BMW/Audi options you noted, all more luxurious and far better on road than Wrangler, Bronco or Grenadier.
Could’ve been recorded before maybe
Santa Fe, let's go!
Always like your videos. I think I’m gonna wait for the three or four row version.
Why not wait for the 5 or 6 row version? You can fit more bots.
I have the 110 and I love it❤
If you've ever sat in a defender you never confused it for a luxury product.
Always enjoy Alex's reports. However, his comparisons do not make sense. The Defender is not comparable to the cars Alex chose as alternatives. Except the Jeep. Incidentally, as a Brit, it hurts me to tell you JLR is owned by the Indians, Tata group and is built in Slovakia. Changing times my friends..,
The reality is that the closest customer cross shops for the Defender are the BMW and the Mercedes. That's mainly because Defender buyers that are buying new don't really take theirs off road.
the 4 cyl turbo is actually fine and alomost 1000 less year in insurance!!
Looks great. Very macho. Shame that its reliability is so poor 😢
JLR Relibility is more electronic gremlins nowadays that outright drive train iasues.
Third row on a 110 is a must, I would never buy one with out it
you said next year for Defender 130, do you mean 2025 or it was 2023 filmed this one so it's 2024? Honestly they are pretty much the same except the 3rd row
This was filmed in 2023.
Which ones more reliable Defender or Jeep?
No Issues with ANY of my Wranglers and Ive had 7 dating back to 1990. I had 3 LR's and all were terrible but in all fairness one was a new 98, a new 2002, and a new 2014 Evoque . The Evoque was the worst!!. 02 perfect until 31k miles and then literally everything went wrong, I mean everything. The 98, few things, but not terrible. Was getting worse though. I really really want a Defender, but worried about reliability , maintenance costs are very high, and just decided the other day to call my insurance company- Amica- great company, however the LR Defender was nearly double the cost to insure my 2021 Wrangler 4xe Rubicon. First oil change is $375 vs. Jeep at around $80. First major service for the Defender at 21K miles around $1600-2000. Just turned my Jeep in lease ended and it had 31K miles and was flawless. I should just get a 4Runner Limited, but I just love that damn Defender. Just be sure you can afford to actually maintain it the Defender.
@@ggolds5 Thanks for sharing! Great input.
Alex, can you review 2024 Lincoln nautilus? Especially the hyper version.
I'll be driving it soon!
Alex, you should measure your hands. When you say 4" of legroom with your spread fingers, it's actually probably double.
This interior makes it seem more of a discovery 3/4 successor, then a Defender
99.9% of people who buys this car uses it for city shopping
I mean the four or five row.
Give me the Lexus GX
For looks and luxury, I’d get the 110/130; I’d have trouble justifying the price on either. I don’t need this level of off-road capability.
Loved loved this review
Grand Cherokee is not worth buying. I couldn’t wait to get rid of my 2021-it felt like I was just waiting for the next problem all the time.
I weigh 350 and am 5-10. Will I fit into a Defender 110?
Aside from a slightly nicer interior, the Lexus GX is better in every single way. It's cheaper, it's more durable, it will be infinitely more reliable, and retains its resale value better.
If You Want a 3rd Row Seats, Get a 130. Give Me a 110 V8 & No 3rd Row.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a much more luxurious and capable vehicle, it has a much better fuel economy and better road clearance with the air ride suspension, my choice is Jeep O|||||||O
its not One of..its the most capable....
I love the opening :) poor wealthy people they do not have options :D
ohh woww, engineering definitely didn't put much thought in the 3rd row it seems. a 10-yr old could not fit on the 3rd row comfortably. Maybe 1-2 five-year olds. 3rd row is quite usable in 130, but absolutely poor cargo space (imo)
التحية من الافضل عدم اضافة الصف الثالث للمقاعد ، لان الساعة والارتفاع لدفندر١١٠ غير مساعد .
"so much less expensive" is for poor people
Pay to play indeed 😢
211”… ?? Did he just goofed up??
Thats a bad 3rd row, even a child will struggle to be comfortable.
Ему бы тойотовской надежности,!
the defender has missed the mark completely for the Land Rover heritage of off-roading,, one can only get 18" wheels with the 4cyl option..
true and air suspension maybe issues down the road ,who wants a 4cy in a heavy car
Didn’t the Series I and II only come in a 4 cylinder?
Is the D250 diesel engine a good choice? Enough power?
At this point reliability shouldn’t matter to you
I’d personally splurge for the 130 with the 5.0L SC V8. That v8 sounds so good 😍
as long as ur leasing the vehicle, and if you really want a v8. otherwise, even the new hyundai santa fe will last longer then this
No one wants unexpected roadside assistance and dealership trips, especially when supply chain issues plague so many OEMs and could mean being without a vehicle for weeks if not months.
@@huanronghu4432 but the Santa Fe is nowhere near as dynamic or as powerful or as off-road capable. That said it does look really good inside and out
@@ALMX5DPJLR dealers and other luxury car dealers will give you a loaner for the length of your repair. Most issues experienced are electronic niggles.
@@th003g even if so, it's still a PITA to have anything that removes a function or feature of a vehicle, require a trip to a dealer at X miles away, exchanging to a vehicle that is not yours for X amount of time, and have to return to said dealer to pick up the vehicle. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I very much dislike not having my own vehicle to drive, with all my personal stuff inside it (do I swap stuff over for an undetermined amount of time, or do I leave stuff in my vehicle being taken to the dealer etc).
Quick question , isn’t the inline 6 actually a bmw engine similar to what is in the X5
The BMW uses arguably the best ice engine ever made...the B58. The only thing the LR engine shared with it is they are both inline 6s. Another difference is the LR uses a supercharger.
It’s definitely no Land Cruiser
dont buy any of these if you think that third row is usable..they are not
Just who sits in the MIDDLE seat of the 2nd row?? In the HISTORY of the entire planet, if you have 5 passengers with an available 3rd row, who says "I'd rather sit in the middle instead of the 3rd row"
NOBODY!! Stop putting in bench seats FFS.
What's the matter with the middle seat? Third rows are almost always worse than the middle seat 9 out of 10 times
@normanli7085 Depends on the vehicle. If you're referring to cars like the outlander phev, the 3rd row is pretty useless. But if you're in the territory of this Defender or Hyundai Palisade in terms of interior space, then the 3rd row is actually pretty useful. And in a pinch, requiring a fifth passenger to warrant sitting awkwardly elbow to elbow in the middle seat, hopping into the back instead is way better. Trust me I am a palisade owner and regularly have people in the back.
@ChristianC-gy1ym just because there's good headroom in the third row doesn't make it a livable seat. Look at Alex's positioning in the defender 110 third row. Yes there's good headroom, but if he were to fit in the third row, then there's no way to fit anyone in that same seat in the second row. Therefore, if u want to fit adults in the third row, most likely u need a full size SUV, a van, or a bigger midsized SUV
@normanli7085 Funny, I never mentioned head room. Sounds like you never lived with a vehicle with a useful 3rd row. I could be wrong, but if you have I think you'd change your tune quickly. Unless you're an over 6' tall adult, if you have kids they can very easily be comfortable in the back. I live with a family of 5. My 4 year old, my two parents, wife and I. We have very comfortably made multiple road trips from Vegas to California which is about a 4 to 5 hour drive depending on traffic and where we're going. It really is difficult to argue against captain's chairs in the 2nd row. That trumps a bench seat ANY day of the week. There is an extremely rare instance where you are going to pack a car full of 7 people. Give me captain's chairs, and 6 passengers max is enough and superior 99.99% of the times. If you need 7 seats, buy a van.
I heard these things are junk and give contant problems for 100k...lol
Junk.
❤❤🎉🎉🎉
But it's unreliable!
BS… The car looks awful. It has no similarity to the original Defender whatsoever. I would never trust driving it through a desert. The reason to get it is simply the plug in hybrid … why? To avoid €70000 of ECO TAXES in Europe. And only if you are really not going very far with it - and in Europe you can get away with not going very far. That’s the only reason. Otherwise I’d be looking at a Toyota Landcruiser 70 series or a Ineos Grenadier (with a lot of extra Jerry Cans).
Looks like Kia
More like the new Hyundai santa fe looks like this defender haha
