Memories! A neighbor/friend's little daughter, named Melissa, was diagnosed with cancer. She was old enough to know that was not a good thing and was afraid. Her mother shared with Melissa that Geno had lung cancer (I did) and he is ok. She would come to me for support and courage and I would sing this song to her. She went into remission and since they moved away a long time ago-she is probably in her 30's now, but this brought back her sweet memory to me. thanks buddy!

Hey Gayle, if you don't have Greg's book "My Crosses To Bear" you might consider buying it. A tell-all chronology of the ABB from Greg's perspective.....an eye opener. Got to see them on their last tour when they came thru Virginia Beach. Glad I did. Now fond of Tedeschi-Trucks band as that's where Derek Trucks landed post ABB. Loved your post.
This is one of those nice Allman Brothers songs that you put on, shut your eyes and just chill. Makes me think of summertime bar-b-ques, sitting around with friends tilting back a few cold beers.

Jamal, read Gregg's bio. His dad was a military man who was murdered when he stopped to help a man. His widow went out to work to support herself and her 2 very young sons. Duane was kind of brother/father at same time as they grew up without a father. Losing Duane was a huge personal loss. Complicated people with enormous talents & willingness to work hard & they found like minded musicians to create a unique style. Its said the Fillmore Live album is the best rock album of all time. Saturday afternoon in Dallas, Texas, early 1970's, 18 years young, nice calm pool hall, pitcher of beer, quarter drops off the table into the juke box, "Melissa" starts playing. That voice, those chord changes and that reverb-ed high pitch guitar....... I go back there in my mind, whenever.
I lost my Sister Melissa over 20 years ago and this song still brings her to my heart and a tear to my eye. She was a ballet dancer and a beautiful sweet spirit. RIP sweet one
Please be the first one on RUclips to react to Gregg Allman perform “Melissa” with Jackson Browne. The guitar solo at the end will have you in tears. Most emotional guitar solo I’ve ever heard.
Thanks for playing this. Very melancholy this evening. We lost my sweet brother in law last night to covid. Just trying to be still and listen to some music he loved. Andy was a Georgia boy through and through and loved The Allman Brothers.
So many memories! My lady 50 years ago when this song came out was named Melissa. Called her"sweet Melissa". Lost track of her many years ago. Hope she is alive and well. We were young and in love. Thanks Jamel_aka_Jamal.
Thanks for doing this reaction. Beautiful song. My niece was named after this song. We played it at her funeral. RIP Melissa Jean. You're always remembered and loved 💗💗
His brother Duane left a guitar tuned in E on the bed. He didn't really play guitar and picked it up and messed around and came up with the verse. Tried to show it to Duane but he wasn't interested. Years later they tried it again and this was Mellissa.
I absolutely LOVE this song -- one of my forever most beautiful favorites. It has such a deep and emotional impact that I've never been able to explain, but I'm near tears every single time. Watching the live performances -- especially with Dickie Betts. Watching Gregg just sent chills, especially the lyrics about the "dead man's ghost" -- he looked up and makes me wonder if he was thinking of or seeing his brother Duane in that moment.
A boy I grew up with became a professional musician, playing drums for several rock bands. Over the years, no matter where he was playing, he would call me and play this song. I somehow represented a time of innocence, his school boy crush, the hometown girl. He came through Dallas once and we went to the movies, walked around downtown holding hands and ate cupcakes at a sidewalk bakery. We stole a couple of sweet kisses before he had to take off. It was all so pure, sweet and innocent. I got to be Melissa that day. He passed away last year, but this song occasionally pops up in my FB memories from him.
A band that I was in back in the 80s used to play this song. Our guitar player actually named his daughter Melissa after this tune. Every time I hear it, it takes me back to a very cool period in my life. Thanks for this, Jamel!
Wow! My Greg Allmam story. 1992 I was a DirecTv installer. I arrived at work to see I had a work order for Greg Allman in San Rafael. Arrived onsite and was introduced to Mr. Allman. Now a bit of background. Melissa was one of my all time favorite songs as a young teenager. Had the 8-track! I had long blonde hair and at times was compared to him in looks. So I meet him and start my install. Finished up and walked Greg thru basic operation of satellite service's. He offered me a joint, but politely declined. Left the jobsite with a small intimate priceless memory of one of my rock heros. Peace to you Jamal, and to all, as you walk your path...
Oh man! I love love this song! My favorite by the Allman Brothers! Beautiful song!! Love Greg Allman's voice in this one...so much emotion! Also love Blue Sky & Jessica...
My favorite Allman Brothers song. I remember driving across the PA Turnpike on a beautiful Fall evening with the windows down and "wind blowing through my hair" with this song turned up. Beautiful, bittersweet . . .
My son was 3, little music lover. We met a friend's wife and she said, " Hello, Griffin. I'm Melissa " He asked, "Sweet Melissa? " she melted and told me Eat A Peach was her favorite album ever. I love my son. Innocent then and a wonderful young man at age 18 now.
I love when they do that too Jamel. I saw allman brothers live at pine knob in Michigan. I think it was probably 1979. Great concert, great time. They had so much soul.

Yes I know that he won't stay without Melissa.

Jamal, my eldest daughter was named after this song. It brings a happy tear to my eyes every-time I listen to it. I love my “Sweet Melissa” always & forever ❤️ thank YOU for making me your Dad, Melissa Diane
Gregg came to Muscle Shoals to keep the circle unbroken. He knew the end was near and he chose Muscle Shoals because that's where it all began when young Duane Allman began the March to greatness at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals before moving across town to Sheffield Alabama where he collaborated with Boz Scaggs and the Swampers who've been known to pick a song or two and a TV star named Cher. Cher was NATURALLY beautiful back then, During that time, he began to put together The Allman Brothers. When Gregg came home in 2018, it was painful to see how he was wasting away. But the Muscle Shoals guys were there for him with help from Jackson Browne and Legendary producer, Rick Hall who had brought Duane into his studio in 1969. Rick Produced Gregg's Southern Blood album and after Gregg passed away, Rick soon followed him and the CIRCLE was complete. God Bless all those guys who paid the price to give us the music we will always remember.
❤ I'm from Florence Alabama and still live there which is across the river. The rich history we have there will never be duplicated in the music industry.
This Melissa says thanks for taking a listen to the song Melissa! Of course, I'm biased but this is a beautiful song. Apparently I read that he didn't have a name yet and that he heard a lady call after her daughter Melissa in a grocery store (I wrote this before you finished your video. I'm sorry Jamel. My cousin is a huge AB fan and told me that story years ago). I was already born when this song came out but on my 21st Birthday cake,my aunt wrote Happy 21st Birthday Sweet Melissa! The Allman Brothers rock and so do you!
I was in Macon in November and visited Rose Hill Cemetery to see the Allmans' graves. Theirs are well-kept, but a lot of the cemetery is weedy and overgrown. This is a beautiful song. Thank you for reacting to it. Love and peace!
Such a beautiful song, haunting guitar work by Dickey Betts on this. It showed, to me, just how legendary the Allman Bros. were & are, that they were able to pick up the pieces after Duane Allman's death & come back with albums like "Eat A Peach" & "Brothers & Sisters". Amazing.
Gregg said he wrote it way before fame & was liked by his brother before his untimely death. His bro was guitar legend Duane Allman. But, he perfected the song with the band later. But, its obviously emotionally about his dead brother (lyric about dead man & no blanket for his head) and his love of life. It's so melancholy but exceptionally beautiful. The acoustic version with Gregg, Dickie Betts & Warren Haynes on Dennis Miller youtube video is also superb. The Allman Brothers were perfection.
Was blessed to have been at the 50th Allmans "The Brothers" show at Madison Square Garden this past March before NYC shut down - This is one of the chill'ist songs from these guys - Peaches forever!!!!!
This was hard for me to listen through. My baby sister, Melissa, went home to the Lord Jesus just 8 years ago due to cancer. and I have avoided listening to this song since. I had learned the chords to this song and played my dime store guitar and sang it to her since she was a little kid. Thank you Jamel for the healing tears, I needed that. And to ALL the Melissa's out there and the ones who love them...Love and Peace.
I searched for a used acoustic 🎸 for years. One day when I was backpacking I found a sad, forgotten beauty in the back oof a music shop in 🇮🇪. After two months of TLC and restoration I brought it back to life. First time I played the chords to Melissa, it felt so right that it had to be: Melissa became her name, and every time I hear it I get goosebumps. 🙏for your appreciation, Jamel
I don't think I've ever met a Melissa that wasn't attractive. Smooth song. You might want to check out Loan Me A Dime, a live video featuring Boz Skaggs in 1985. He originally did the song with Duane Allman. I think the 1985 version is better.
You are such a joyful break From Today's weirdness. I would still love to watch you hear Paul Simon sing American tune. It's a song I think everyone needs today. And I do mean today!
He was writing the song when he first left home to go to L.A. to try and make it as a writer or studio musician. He was homesick and he wanted to write something symbolizing how he and others felt about being away from home. He didn't have anybody but most his musician buddies spent a lot of time talking about the girl they left behind. I can't recall where I saw him talk about this, an interview somewhere on RUclips.
I never get tired of the Allman Bros. sound; beautiful.
Check out their shows from the grand opera House in Macon Georgia

Classic Allman Brothers sound. This and Midnight Rider were popular about the same time. Sad day when Greg Allman passed🙁
Such a beautiful sad song. Allman Bros rule.

The Allman Brothers Band Lyrics
"Melissa"
Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah.
The gypsy flies from coast to coast
Knowing many, loving none,
Bearing sorrow havin' fun,
But back home he'll always run
To sweet Melissa... mmm...
Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same.
And no one knows the Gypsy's name
No one hears his lonely sighs,
There are no blankets where he lies.
In all his deepest dreams the Gypsy flies
with sweet Melissa... mmm...
Again the morning's come,
Again he's on the run,
Sunbeams shining through his hair,
Appearing not to have a care.
Well, pick up your gear and Gypsy roll on, roll on.
Crossroads, will you ever let him go? (Lord, Lord)
Will you hide the dead man's ghost,
Or will he lie, beneath the clay,
or will his spirit float away?
But I know that he won't stay without Melissa.
Yes I know that he won't stay without Melissa.
Thanks , for lyrics
I love that his grave has the "Again the morning's come..." verse on his slab. Beautiful!!

Yippee!! I’m so happy that you are finally doing this!! ✌️🍑🍄❤️
The third verse is the epitaph on Gregg Allman’s grave ❤️
This Melissa says thanks for taking a listen to the song Melissa! Of course, I'm biased but this is a beautiful song. Apparently I read that he didn't have a name yet and that he heard a lady call after her daughter Melissa in a grocery store (I wrote this before you finished your video. I'm sorry Jamel. My cousin is a huge AB fan and told me that story years ago). I was already born when this song came out but on my 21st Birthday cake,my aunt wrote Happy 21st Birthday Sweet Melissa! The Allman Brothers rock and so do you!
Coming with the great tracks today, Jamal... we need it, given the news today.
Yeah, this channel is important on days like today. It is like an exhale.
If only we could live by his sweatshirts message
@Maria Ramirez also not a bad philosophy hahaha
@@tylerrochette7682 Or any of those lyrics from the songs we cherish so much. What do they say? There is nothing new under the sun.
@@kateritter5765 we can only do our part to live by ethics we wish to see in others. I hope you have some peace and joy in your world
I needed it.. my most favorite Allman brothers song. Thank you Jamel.
Jessica & Statesboro Blues please?
I was in Macon in November and visited Rose Hill Cemetery to see the Allmans' graves. Theirs are well-kept, but a lot of the cemetery is weedy and overgrown. This is a beautiful song. Thank you for reacting to it. Love and peace!
Jamel....is that? Yes you’re favorite. That Hammond organ sound
Amazing.
OK, now you’ve done it! You found one of the best songs EVER!!!!!!!! ❤️
It is my birthday today. Thank you for this lovely present, and love to all the J aka J family. Keep Great Music Alive.
"Jessica " is another great one by the Allman Brothers!
You really should watch the Unplugged live version on Melissa.
One of their very best. Suprb vocals and lead guitar!Love it!👍🏻❤️☮️✌🏻
Now ya gotta do their song Jessica. Such a great banger. All instrumental with blazing guitar solos.
Was blessed to have been at the 50th Allmans "The Brothers" show at Madison Square Garden this past March before NYC shut down - This is one of the chill'ist songs from these guys - Peaches forever!!!!!
Welp, there's no way around it, now you have to do their "Jessica" -- but, just a warning, the lyrics are pretty deep.....
😂😂
I named my 1st daughter Jessica in tribute to the song...
Oh please, and the full version at that
@@abmqa me too...
😂😂😂 👍🏻
Thank you for this one, Jamel! This song came out when I was 7 and it was on the radio constantly. It always reminds me of childhood.
Melissa was Duane Allmans favorite guitar. He was killed on his motorcycle at a crossroads. (crossroads will you hide the dead mans soul)
Not applicable. This was written long before Duane died. This was one of Duane's favorites.
Those lyrics are coincidence.
You are half right and so am I ...the final lyrics were changed. Thats ok. We all love the ALLMAN bROS.:0@@erikolson4056
Y’all quit makin shit up…dang, must be from up north.
Ahh..what a classic! Sweet Melissa...love you brother! Thanks for making us all smile!
Roy Orbison - pretty woman...story is he almost passed out singing this song
Incredible sound, always love the Allman Brothers. Great reaction, thank you. BTW, studio looks awesome!!!
You should check out Gregg Allman's "Queen of Hearts" or his version of "These Days."
A must to say the least.
And Multi-Colored Lady
Laid Back is one of my all time favorite albums ♥️
My favorite version of Q of H is from his live album with Cowboy and an orchestra! Incredible! Give it a listen.

Jamel, please react to Stormy Monday by the Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore East.
GREAT TUNE!! One of my favs! Jman))))
Youre still rocking it!
Ramblin' Man and Jessica are some sweet tunes by them also
He's already done Ramblin Man, though if you've got a suggestion for a live performance, he'd likely be down for that
@@mikethemotormouth so hard to keep track lol. But i think Jessica would be a treat, such a beautiful tune
Since you are now the only reactor I sub to, I'll watch/listen to whatever you put forth. But I'm glad you chose this song 🙂 Thank you, J
Jamal: another song along this theme is Gentle on My Mind as sung by Glen Campbell. A classic!
YES!
Also my absolute favorite
"WICHITA LINEMAN"
"BY THE TIME I GET TO
PHOENIX"
"SOUTHERN NIGHTS"
I've only known one and she she was an attractive Puerto Rican girl.
One of my favorites by the Allman brothers.
Some of the sweetest guitar licks!
You are such a joyful break From Today's weirdness. I would still love to watch you hear Paul Simon sing American tune. It's a song I think everyone needs today. And I do mean today!
Right???
So glad you finally got to this one! I knew you'd love it.. it just makes your heart and soul cry.
This is ironic, I just watch all 3 of your reaction videos to Whipping Post 😂 keep it up brother
