  • This Dart has now been withdrawn from service. On the day that we shot this video, we knew that it would be this Dart's last ever chance for a good thrashing, so we decided to give it a memorable send off by bringing her flying down the A38 after completing her last ever service for the people of Plymouth.
    Although this Dart is clearly tired from being used and abused for nearly two decades, she gave absolutely everything she had and managed to give us 50mph on full kickdown which for a 17 year old bus is unarguably astonishing.
    The fleet number and registration plate of this bus has been made unidentifiable for the safety and classified identity of the driver.
    Specs:
    Chassis: 1999 Dennis Dart SPD (Super Pointer Dart)
    Engine: Cummins 6BT
    Gearbox: 4 speed Allison World Series (1000 or B300R?)
    Body: Plaxton Pointer 2
    Enjoy!

    great bus, driving a '06 29seater on the eastpoint shuttle service at the moment, goes like a rocket,

    The B300R always reminds me of a ZF Ecomat doing a kick down when pulling away

    ive only just noticed you went on the same part of motorway as i did with 423 :) sounds really nice and high speeds

    The 6BT was underpowered on SPD's as it weighed more than the SLF. They were even worse with a 3 speed Voith. Later SPD's had more power. First South Yorkshire had quite a few of these and were gutless. They spent half of the time on the back of a tow truck.

    Even though the Excel mk1 had the same engine it was even more unreliable.

    Wow, this one goes pretty fast! Too bad the 2009 American version my city has feel slow. (Blue Bird Ultra LF CNG)

      ANIME-AND-BUSES It’s a shame this bus is long gone but she was a fairly decent motor, not great on hills but she had kickdown, hold gears, the lot! Will definitely be missed! Oooo the Ultra Bird is GNC powered? Interesting and good for the planet!

      TheIrish RoadSurfer Ah, that's too bad it's been retired. When I found out the Ultra LF was based on this model, I did some searching for the early models in North America. And I found Left hand drive versions of this same model. I believe it's been through two redesigns in America. Though one of the bus drivers in my city told me that our Ultra LF buses are built cheap as they keep breaking down. I still like them though.

      ANIME-AND-BUSES Yeah unfortunately a lot of buses are made as cheaply as possible :-(

    Good video by the way :-)

      No I think you find they are 4 speed. What you're doing is counting the torque conveter locking as a gear change, the SPD Dart's here have 4 speed Allisons. The E200's here however have the 5 speed Allison. Sorry about removing your comment there, I was meant to press "reply" but I pressed "remove".

    What were the power outputs on SPD's? SLF's were only 130bhp.

    • @MichaelFlatman
      @MichaelFlatman 5 лет назад +2

      supposed to make 150hp i think

    • @jaggass
      @jaggass 4 года назад +2

      @@MichaelFlatmanThey needed that bit more power due to extra weight. It's probably 150bhp as i remember The Leyland DAF 45 ATI's with 2 different power outputs 130 and 150 bhp. I remember the 170 ones as well but that might have had the 24v engine in them.

    Has it been scrapped now?

      Michael Langley Yeah she was scrapped not long after the making if this video

    • @jaggass

      In a way i wish SLF's were fitted with SPD gearboxes as they had lock up. AT545's in Dart's didn't last very long.

    • @ThePlymouthRoadSurfer
      @ThePlymouthRoadSurfer  6 лет назад +1

      Michael Langley Yeah that would have been a really good modification, reduce torque converter wear my miles!

    • @jaggass
      @jaggass 4 года назад +2

      @@ThePlymouthRoadSurfer It's what killed many AT545's as they went through torque converters like no tomorrow and would jump in and out of gear if it was on it's way out.

    Why are those Darts always so rattly? They're like SGs.

    • @ThePlymouthRoadSurfer
      @ThePlymouthRoadSurfer  7 лет назад +1

      They're badly made my friend, just like the SG's.

    • @lukeyg6042
      @lukeyg6042 7 лет назад +1

      The SGs are also uncomfortable which makes it worse.

      +TheIrish RoadSurfer these Darts were built like tanks - 2 videos prove it, 1 is the Top Gear Bus Racing, where a Dart Pointer wins with just a sagging door and paint chips in damage, and a Bus Banger Racing video, where you can clearly see a surprisingly young MPD annihilating various Merc Breadvans and an Optare Excel. The interior however, does seem a bit bodged together which is an unfortunate occurrence throughout these beastly tanks.
