Back in the 2000s I met Richard Simmons while waiting for a plane at the small local airport. He had been at a nearby Institute doing a talk or something and was here to catch his own flight out. The best thing about him is that he was the same way in person as he was on TV. He overheard someone mention his name on their cell phone and he asked who she was talking to. When she said it was her mom, he asked for the phone and started talking to her mom, "Yes, it really is me." Later, he wandered over to the windows and shouted, "Oh my God, these planes have propellers! What century is this?" As he boarded his plane he left behind a room full of smiles.

This is exactly the tribute Richard would want. A lot of people would treat him as a joke, but the workouts are deceptively challenging. I remember the first time I tried Sweatin’. I couldn’t make it through but was so encouraged by all the different people in the videos. He showed us no matter what we looked like we could do it if we just tried. His gentle encouragements throughout still make me emotional because there are so many times our own brain tells us lies. He understood us, because he was where we were before. Richard Simmons was an amazing human and he loved people. For a lot of us, he loved us when we couldn’t love ourselves. I’m bawling and need to go find my dvd. Thank you for this video.❤

Thank you Ashleigh, for honoring him in this special way. And thank you for all the extra effort to make it authentically 80s. I was told that I had the MWF 3 to 4 PM class. First day of class, I'm programming my music when this young woman walks in. She also had been promised the slot by a different manager and we ended being told to "work it out." Sometimes, I had to dance with this young woman, we had great chemistry. I think most people that didn't live through it just get their information from 80's movies. Most of those movies really only capture a subset of the 80's culture. They still don't know what the most of us experienced. Being a teenager in the early to mid 80's meant that you grew up in the 70's. We had lots of different experiences that can't be captured in a 2 hour, singular focused film.

this is what fitness should be. just a message of trying and doing what you can, if you can do the whole thing cool, if you have to take little breaks during one or two songs,, thats ok too. it's at your own pace. but you can lose a LOT of weight just doing this.
so many fitness people promote heavy lifting and protein and just stuff people can't do immediately so they get discouraged. it's cool you're exposing more people to this by trying it and doing what you can

If you were around in the 80s and 90s you probably remember Richard's many, many appearances on David Letterman and Dave would insult him and treat him like crap while Richard desperately tried to be his best friend. Richard on Letterman had some of the funniest late night television moments of all time that surpassed any skits SNL were doing.

What a great homage to a great man. I know he would love this.
My mom had a _Sweating to the Oldies_ tape, and I would use it when no one was home. After getting used to the routines, it was actually really fun. My motivation to exercise became less about losing weight and more about satisfying the urge to get up and dance. My mom had other exercise tapes, but they were boring.
By the way, I admire the relationship you have with your mom. It cracked me up every time you asked "How is this?" and she popped back into frame to see.

While I totally understand _why_ copyright/copyright infringement exists, boy can it be a real bummer.
When I was suuuuper young I used to sweat to the oldies with my mother (and my older sister, as well as her bff) and every single one of those songs are _extremely_ nostalgic for me even though they’re from way before my time.
Thus being able to actually hear them while you were working out would’ve totally been the cherry on top of an already great video!
Regardless, what a fantastic tribute! You spared no expense and boy did it show!!

Watching you apply the makeup: "Where is she going with this? I don't recall that."
Seeing the final product: "Oh. Yep that was it..." lol.
Because of his larger than life character, he was easily impersonated with some comedy shows... and so when he appeared on an episode (or two?) of "Who's Line Is It Anyway" and fully embraced the fun - he made for some rather hilarious moments (which I assume would still hold up for millennials, although I've been wrong before. Maybe worth a watch for some laughs!)
What a great tribute and fun video today! Thanks!

I used to do sweatin to the oldies in 7th grade free period ('92) and yes, it was intense every time. We all loved Richard by the end of the video. I loved all of the success stories at the end. Richard's words of encouragement felt like a hug through the screen. "Babies! You loved yourself! You never give up! You did it!" Thank you, Richard. Thank you, Ashleigh. RIP Mr. Simmons. ❤

You should do more off shoots like this! Richard Simmons made these videos to inspire overweight people to try to get moving and in shape. He wasn’t looking to make hard bodies or sexy people. He wanted to save lives and get obese people back into a healthy body weight. I’m sure he changed and extended many people’s lives with his work. As for the 80s look I think you nailed it! I’m barely old enough to remember the 80’s but there are plenty of pics of my mother and sister to verify you did well.

I clicked on this video (not for the makeup), but to watch how you would do & react to a Richard Simmons video. I didn't know that you were already familiar with them.
I was someone who took (& loved) taking formal dance training - for DECADES. It was my thing. For this reason I didn't get into Richard Simmons growing up. However, when I would catch Richard Simmons on TV, I would ALWAYS pause for a few minutes to watch him. I couldn't help it as he was INFECTIOUS. He was always so happy, so energetic, so fun & positive to people in these sessions (as you saw) to keep them inspired & going. I loved his upbeat music that he used & as you pointed out, I loved that he used a whole variety of people. Working out wasn't only for the thin white women (who were already thin), it was for everyone - to get into shape & to also be more healthy through fitness. (Other TV workouts only included a few white, attractive, younger women in those leotards working out & the workouts appeared to BE work. Some women into seriously trying to work out would watch them, as would men - but NOT for working out.) Richard Simmons was different & better.
Watching this video, it was also clear that the sessions were VERY well done. They were exercising ALL parts of your body - from your arms (including the parts that get flabby the most) to the stomach, butt & all parts of the legs. I also like how smart the workouts were, slowing down the movements repeatedly during the workout to keep people going & not just saying; "I can't do this anymore" & quitting.
Richard Simmons workouts were great - & you know what Ashleigh, so are you. You did a really good job with the workout. I hope you enjoyed it. (Besides doing this workout just for this video it may be something you may want to keep up - unless you do other forms of exercise - besides housework, which is ALSO a workout when fully done. You can watch yourself & your stamina improve over time.)
I just wanted to point out to you, that even though Richard Simmons is a professional & was doing these workouts all the time, notice how even HE was sweating & then REALLY sweating towards the end. (Flush out all those nasty toxins for clearer skin & a clearer body.)
As for your upcoming trip away, I hope you have a great time.

The most shocking, to me, part of the video was right at the start. At 1:41 (or so) Ashleigh checked out of Walmart and put her purchased items into a plastic bag. My state has banned those plastic bags. All shoppers need to bring or purchase reusable bags or buy paper ones at 10 cents each. I about shit when I saw those plastic bags in the store. My wife and I have been bringing our own bags to the store for almost a decade, so the change was no big deal for us. But others were outraged! It was pretty funny to us.
