I was a child in a house that was dirty with stuff everywhere. The piles weren't that high because we had no money. Dirty dishes under the couch and beds. Kitchen dirty, dirty, dirty. We were sick alot because food sat out too long after cooking. Before I would make toast I would dump the mice turds out of the toast. I had mice run across my bed at night. It traumatized me, and I still have a residual fear of mice. Stained carpets in this video could have been our floors, Leaking roofs. Moldy walls. I watch these videos and want to cry. I am now 70 years old and live in a clean house with minimal clutter. But still have residual trauma.

Mack, this past weekend I cleaned out my parent's hoarded garage; it was so bad my mom could barely get in and out of her mid-size SUV. I cleared 25 years worth of junk, old furniture, trash and any rodents and their waste. Since the garage is clear, I now have a proper place to store moose and even practice spin kick techniques! You and Barbie kick started my brain into getting this project done. I now realize what you mean when you talk about the impact of cleaning for other people; after I cleaned, I could see the massive mental weight lifted from my elderly mothers shoulders. I will keep the momentum and clean other hoarded areas of the house - If I could, I'd record it. Thanks for what you do; If you happen to expand or need help with a cleaning in Minnesota, I'd be glad to assist.

I heard that the big room with the giant door was for cars, but I didn’t believe it!! LOL ;). We’re moving house, downsizing, and it’s the first time in 10 years that I’ve been able to walk from our first garage into the second garage and out the back door. My husband wouldn’t discard/recycle rusty mismatched tubs of nails, bolts and screws! You can imagine the totally random collection that simply had to be ‘disappeared’.

Great idea. I've noticed in hoarding situations people seem to be more willing to let things go if the people know the those items will help others. As I recall, there was an episode of "Hoarders" in which a lady who had a lot of clothing could donate the clothes to a women's shelter. I saw a video a man made of his parents' house which was hoarded to the point where there was structural damage from the weight. The mother had gone through menopause yet would buy feminine hygiene products because they were at bargain price. Those never-opened packages could have been given to a shelter or some other organization helping women. Sadly, there are often so many useable, good-quality items that no one wants.

It never hurts to ask about trash. I live in a city and I spoke to the head of trash collection and explained I needed to clean out an estate, but the old lady had no money for a dumpster. They allowed me to throw out about 20 contractor bags on garbage pick up day, and then would come back every three days or so ( when I called the day ahead) and do a special pickup of more big loads. All this was at no extra charge...however, I flipped the pickup guys twenty bucks each time they came so they could buy coffee and food. It worked out great as it meant I was not rushed, which I would have been if we had rented a dumpster fir four days. I was able to take my time, and saved the homeowner hundreds of dollars.

About a year ago I did what I could for a young lady overweight and unable to properly clean the house she rented from me for many years. I spent four solid days doing laundry that was on the floor all over the house. I then moved her and her teenage son into a really nice ground floor apartment for a fresh start. I sold the house and the majority of her accumulated stuff went by way of the dumpster.
Her life is simpler now with less space to clean. I feel like I did what I could to improve both their lives but of course going forward is up to them.
BTW I even provided them with new heavy duty washer and dryer after doing all that laundry!

Once I grew up and moved away and had my own place to live (that I kept clinical levels of clean) I haven’t had those same issues since. I had to explain to my parents that yes, in fact, my respiratory issues were very much the result of the home we lived in.

Hi Mack! We're from northern Maine ands have a lots of moose up here. We cleaned a three floor Georgian colonial with a full basement (along with four our buildings and a barn) occupied by my mother-in-law. It took four years. It was stuffed floor to ceiling on every floor We used a total of 52 small truck loads, 14 40 yard dumpsters, and finally 8 32 yard dumpsters. She had thrown nothing away since 1958 other than organic garbage. We were able to sell the house for enough to get her a smaller house a block away from us (about 550 miles away in N. Maine from CT) and care for her until she passed away at 91. We gave her 7 happy years. We watch your channel to help us remember. It was like we were in a dream. Every week off and every winter and summer vacation was spent cleaning and getting her and her husband (who was in late Alzheimer's) care. It was mostly us and one of her in laws, but the last summer 3 siblings came to help. There were also 60 junk cars on the property and the town was about to foreclose due to tax deficiencies. I don't know how we did it, maintained a good relationship with her, and survive all the legal turmoil to have her conserved (she thought she worked for the FBI and CIA and frequently was escorted from their office when she was in her early 80's!) and kept her at peace She came over for dinner most nights. She was a delightful woman, well spoken and well educated. It was a complex moral and practical challenge. Thanks for showing us that we were not alone.
I love what you do. My closest friend for the past 45 years is autistic. He is brilliant, an amazing engineer. Two of my grand children are autistic as well. Sweet kids.
I heard about your wife's health problems from Cleaning with Barbie. I am a survivor of complex sinus surgery. The recovery time was long. And the plastic in my nose? It was in there in for a week. How the Hell did they fit all the crap in there? When I fly, I'm never taking carry on again I'm shoving it in there! The first five weeks were the worse. My heart is with you both. I pastor a small rural church up here. We'll pray for you tomorrow (without mentioning her name or yours). I'm sick of surgery. I've had two major procedures in the past 16 months. Gwen just had a major cancer scare. We're with you. Hope things go well. If we can help way out here, let us know. Apart from sending you a live moose.

Like "I'm not a museum I don't need to keep this any more" I'm not a trashcan I don't have to save trash" while I'm washing my hands I will scrub this sink real quick" It has helped so much like a boost to get me to real quick do a small thing. Also, keeping multiple trash bags around the house or multiple supplies handy instead of put away is also a good visual reminder for me.

    • @mimosal3767
      @mimosal3767 3 месяца назад +2

not sure if it helps you, but I dot things very little step by step. Not like "normal people", but decomposing. Meaning I will be slow, but progressing. People may say "I see no difference", but I see the difference, I know it is cleaner, whatever they see and think. When you only do small things, other people may say "this is like nothing" : this is NOT true.
"Ok while I am here I will wash this spoon". Only this spoon, because the idea of washing all the dishes is too much. This is not ridiculous, this is also not "like nothing" : if you don't do it, spoons (and other things) will pile, so that you have no room to wash, then no room to trash things, and it gets harder.
At the opposite, spoon by spoon, you feel like you "do nothing" but "oh ! I finished it !"
Also sometimes, after you did the spoon, you feel like you can do more, and do it all (not always, do not be mean to yourself if you don't do more).
Once cleaned, trying to clean every little thing RIGHT NOW and not "hum I can do it later this is just a spoon after all", helps (me) a lot ! because the more dirty things you have, the less room you have, the harder it is.
      Good luck :)
(Also little trick : own very few objects, and dishes : if you have 20 spoons, you may be tempted to wait for all of them to be dirty to wash them.... if you have only 2, well, you HAVE TO clean them. Also less objects to deal with.
not sure if this is "cheating" but I am in the team "as few object as I can" to relax my mind, issue is my relatives always bring me stuffs, finding my home to empty, and then I am stucked, and they don't really realize that..
Other "trick" : I do not load the cupboards (like to "hide" things). Not sure if this is an ADHD thing, but if a thing is "out of sight", it is kind of lost in a black hole to me...
Same in the fridge : clear glass (or plastic) container, else.... out of sight, out of mind, then lost and rotten.
      Good luck all again !

I'm gonna just vent real quick. So in 2020 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Lo and behold in early may I was hospitalized for diabetic ketoacidosis and learned I was misdiagnosed and I'm actually type 1. Anyways since I got out of the hospital nothing's been the same. I have intense neuropathy now and most physical activity makes me ache for weeks! Because of this I'm no longer able to clean my house. Thankfully my family has picked up where I left off but jeez I miss cleaning so bad. You are a blessing...wish you were in my area. The husband is a hoarder, had a stroke...well has several is on a rehab facility. I started to purge not knowing where to even start. Lost my steam and am at a standstill. We are seniors so it's very overwhelming for me. Ive been trying to take care of everything myself. The children won't help because they are afraid their father will be pissed if and when he's able to come home. I am on a position I don't care I want a clean unhoarded house. There's no mouse poop or expired food just his hoard. He collected everything thinking it will be worth something one day. I'm on a fixed income so can't even afford to get a dumpster to throw the stuff out. I did fill over 20+ bags of clean clothes that I washed and donated to salvation army. There's still sooo much more. Instead of washing his clothes he would just buy new. And now there is way too much. And no room for them and the rest of his hoard. God bless...and am praying to get my steam back so I can continue.

When my parents (who educated me like that) moved, we found food expired for 32 years (yes, 32, I didn't accidentally added a digit). Well, that one was mostly because deep in the cupboard, not accessible, forgotten... but accessible food were sometimes expired for more than 10 years (the kind we can eat past the date, just loose some taste, but still.)
So on y said I struggle with cans : "ok, expired 2 years ago, but can I still eat it ?" (mustard seems to be ok, tested and not sick, but my goal would be to avoid doing that ahah)

About 2 years ago my aunt died she was 83 and she lived with my cousin who was 58 at the time he was single never married and no kids. Well we had not been to her house for a while and as I remember she was a compulsive spender or hoarder so when we walk in the house it was in a terrible state we immediately knew we would need to help my cousin clean because they would be getting visits before and after the funeral . It took us 2 weekends to clean and declutter their home. Flash forward t 2 years later the house is right back where it was minus her personal things that we donated . My point is that some people are just comfortable in that environment . No matter if you clean it several times . God bless you for helping the people that you help ❤

Maybe a Habitat for Humanity resale shop would have cabinetry nice enough to replace the ruined stuff that's in there now...later. Or a homeowner who is remodeling could donate their old stuff. There should be some free options out there when they are ready. And thanks for your narrations - it helps us understand so much better about what you're doing in each situation. It's also interesting how one key household "function" that is in disrepair has a huge ripple effect - no working kitchen sink with running water means no clean dishes, which pile up, then attracts vermin, then things cascade downhill from there. Your work is a blessing - keep on keeping on!

I lived 5 hours away from my parents and when my mother passed a little over a year ago, I had to move my dad closer to me. While packing up his house I was shocked to see the state of their bedroom. Clothes piled everywhere you couldn’t tell what was clean or dirty. A small path thru it all, finding furniture completely covered underneath it all. Bathroom counters that looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in years. The rest of the house was just cluttered but pretty clean. It definitely made me rethink what I owned and vowed I would not leave my family members a mess to clean up when I pass. Thank you for your videos and the message you teach about hoarders. You are a very giving family and I pray blessings to you and yours.

Watching y'all fold all those blankets at the beginning of the video... Seeing things like that inspired me to go through my hall closet a few weeks ago. I pared it down to 2 blankets and 2 sheet sets per person in the family (6 of us). It's honestly more than enough. Then I vacuum sealed the kids baby blankets to save room and put them out of the way. Just can't get rid of those. But since I got rid of probably 20 huge blankets, I felt no guilt about what I chose to keep! Decision paralysis is real, and it felt good to push past it and clean out what we didn't need.

First, I love your SB Mowing T-shirt. Second, I was there once, not a hoarded house , but a stuffed depressed/adhd house. The piles were horrible. When the big freeze hit Texas and the pipes burst in my attic, raining water down onto my bed and destroying the room; my house was cleared for me. I told them to trash or donate everything they thought needed to go. Did I lose some things I would or even should (blank checks) have kept, yes. But I gained so much more. I have done so much better, but being disabled makes cleaning difficult and being an introvert makes hiring/trusting someone to come in to clean difficult…I had one but she ghosted me and I haven’t been comfortable with anyone else.

We are not at a hoarding level thankfully but we do get cluttered easily and I have to assert leadership to maintain cleanliness. If no one takes charge then nothing gets done (at least in my household).

Thank you! I absolutely love your videos. They’re real. I’m tired of listening and watching women cleaning perfectly. Makes me feel like I can’t keep up. And your dry humor is sooo welcomed!!!😂. It helps while I clean while watching your videos.

The doggies were adorable. You gave very good advice on food buying. I suspect they bought groceries intending to use them but the kitchen was so out of control they probably did a lot of fast food buying. Till they get their sink fixed one thing they could do and I did this till I could afford to get my drain fixed ( dang popsicle stick got in the drain that I didn't know was in there) was to use 2 dish pans ( Walmart $5 each) one side for washing one side for rinsing and or use paper plates and bowls and paper cups. Sometimes we have to give ourselves Grace to go against the rules when it makes life easier. I have old grungy wood cabinets inside too and I bought Dollar Tree plastic placemats to cover it up, easier to take out and clean them too. I also use them in my refrigerator to help contain spills again take out and clean dry and put them back. Back to Food though I have found Menu Planning helps a lot just write out the things you like to eat and eat regularly and make a menu of what to serve daily and put on the refrigerator door. It may take some firmness with the kids that this is what we're eating " Monday is Spaghetti night, Tuesday is Taco Tuesday or Burritto, Wednesday is Hamburgers and Fries, that kind of thing. It makes it easier to shop when you know what your menu plan is and less food is bought and wasted. And Meal Prepping like cooking 3 pounds of burger at one time, hamburgers cooked, ground hamburger fried, 3 pounds would get you hamburgers one night, Spaghetti with cooked hamburger one night, ground cooked burger another night to make vegetable soup or Manwiches.. I'm only sharing this as a idea to help not only this Grandma but for anyone else on a limited income. Best wishes for this Grandma it's a tough journey raising Grandchildren alone but I think she can now that her house is back in order and her mind is less overwhelmed.. You Got This Grandma if you are reading this. Anna In Ohio

There seems to be so many common situations in hoarders homes like the plumbing isn’t working, water damage, tons of food and clothes. It also appears that many have lots of brand new unused cleaning supplies like they really don’t want to live that way. I’ve learned so much from your videos. Bless their hearts ❣️ I hope the best and a speedy recovery for Emily. You guys take good care❣️
