Welcome to Belgrade, Captain! I always hoped you'll get to cover Belgrade someday and seeing this video made me very excited! It was such a great video, and I especially liked insights from the ground about how do you debrief, plan fuel and the next flight. Hope that we'll get to see the departure part as well some other day. 🙂
I would like to take an opportunity and ask a question if that's okay. 🙂You've shown the FIX INFO page at 3:13, what are those concrete fixes showing and what do you use them for, especially those radial fixes?
Sure, it is ok to ask questions! The fixes you see here are marking the different MSA (minimum sector altitude) sectors. Between 99 degrees and 161 degrees, the MSA is 3100 feet and in the other sector, it is 3000 feet. We took the information from the ILS approach chart.
Always welcome to Belgrade. Have a great time and safe trip. If you bring German cars or tools, we will pay fair money. Please no bombs, just peace. Wish you health and happiness.
Yes, that is beautiful Danube. They have entered Serbia from the north between Ruski Krstur and Odzaci. Then they flew over the Danube at Novi Sad (the second biggest city in Serbia). Finally at approach, they crossed the highways one from Croatia and one from Hungary which are part fo the Belgarde ring. I lived in that area so I know it even from the birds eye view. :)
Simple arrival, silent frequency and splendid approach. Really enjoyed the slight silencing of the outside audio as it made the cockpit audio sound much clearer. It was a nice idea to include the pre-flight planning for the next flight. I was flying just along the east coast of Florida to New Smyrna Beach last day and passed above Spruce Creek, must be nice to have a taxiway as a driveway. Whenever I pass in that area I always check the CTAF on my nr2 radio to hear if you’re flying and say hi, but no joy for now. Great video as always.

It was so pleasant to hear you and Number one's conversation not being made inaudible because of ATC chatter to other aircraft, I'm not sure if you did this or it was simply because there was less traffic, anyway it was very enjoyable. As always a great approach, the landscape reminded me of a Salvador Dali painting with all its shapes and colours, really beautiful to see. Thank you.

I am testing different camera settings and locations and even different audio recording options. Here we had two advantages: The audio recording improved a lot and had way less background noise than before. Another great approach and very informative yet again captain. I gotta say though, that runway made me panic a bit. I thought you were too high when approaching the runway. I look forward to your next upload. I also enjoyed the last bit of video of you guys setting the next flight and just listening in to the conversation
Thank you so much for your great and helpful feedback! I agree that the far displaced thresholds always initially make you believe that you are way too high on the approach. Whenever possible, I will try to include in the videos more of our work during the turnaround. Have a nice day!
Twice in a row you’ve had such a quiet frequency that you’ve had to radio check! 😂 Interesting to hear that pilots take an active part in ensuring services are in place for passengers who use wheelchairs. It makes sense for safety reasons to know, but I’d always assumed making sure there was assistance in place would be a purely customer service thing. Looked like a nice landing to a rather damp runway. Cool to see such a displaced threshold, by the size of the plane lining up behind I’m guessing it’s down to wing overhang? After getting to see you briefing at a desk, it’s a nice surprise to get to see it during a turnaround and your interaction with the Dispatcher. 🇩🇪🛫🌍🛬🇷🇸🧑🏻✈️
Thanks for sharing your comprehensive comment! Sometimes it is so quiet on the frequncy that we want to make sure that we are still on the right frequency. A displaced threshold this long is always something special. Lots of aiports have displaced thresholds, but most only for 100 meters or 300 feet or so. Thanks again and have a nice day!
Fantastic video as always Captain, really appreciate the quality of them, easily the best cockpit videos on RUclips. I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind? On final you often will add between 1-5kts during the VLS check, how do you decide this and why? Also, when you perform the single engine taxi procedure, engine no 2 is always shut down in your videos, I noticed. Is it ever engine no 1? Thank you :)
Thanks for the good feedback! Please tell everybody about the channel! We compare the VLS on the PFD with the VLS on the MCDU. If the PFD VLS is higher, we add the difference to the approach speed in the MCDU. Single engine taxi is done on engine 1 because the right system also has an electric hydraulic pump, which we switch on. This keeps the PTU off.
It was beautiful to watch this landing... It's a pure art. That was my dream but I didn't have money to became a pilot... The school was very expensive. Good luck in the future🙂
Thanks for watching and for sharing your good and very personal feedback. I am sorry that you were unable to join pilot school due to financial reasons. I wish you all the best!
Great video again, Captain. Do you think you could have started to slow down a bit earlier, like 15nm out from the runway threshold? It would have saved you from using speedbrakes. Once Captain Joe said, rule of thumb is 200 at 10, 190 at 9, 180 at 8 and so on.
They talked exactly about that after landing. Due to the bad weather coming in from behind the airport, they decided to keep the speed up and get the plane on the ground asap.
Thanks for your good feedback! Here, we wanted to land before the weather got closer to the airport. So we flew a little faster. In general, the perfect approach energy wise is an approach with idle power from the cruise level to a little before 1000 feet without using the speed brakes.
Good morning sir, any possibilities that you were departing from Malaga to Berlin this morning 09/06, flight EW8537 with the D-AEED. We may have spotted you because the voice in the radio was quite similar to yours.
Hello, love your videos! Can you explain what you do exactly when you call for "VLS check" prior to landing? How much speed do you add under which circumstances?
Thanks for your good feedback! For the VLS check, we compare the VLS on the PFD with the VLS on the MCDU. If the VLS on the PFD is higher, we add the difference to the approach speed on the MCDU.
22:05 Do you know when is the old main runway (30R) on the Belgrade Aiport renovation expected to be completely finished and replace the new inserted one as the main one again ?
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos i heard they will use the runway you landed on as the new taxiway.. probably the most expensive taxiway in the world rofl what a waste..
The flight came from Duesseldorf in Germany. The detailed information is also available in the video description. Whenever possible, we start the descent at the ideal top of descent. This is the point at which we can do the descent with almost idle power and add only a little power to fly a stabilized approach at 1000 feet.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thanks for this answer. Recently, I was coming back from Hurghada to Belgrade and the pilot announced and started descending just before we entered Serbia. It seems to me like too long distance and too much time lost. This explains it for me. I am just a person interested in flying and planes, knowing some things learned from my interest. I searched a bit trough Google and some forums, but couldn't find the answer. Thank you very much!
From the cruise altitude with idle power to about 1000 feet above the airport, we need roughly 100 to 130 nautical miles to get rid of the altitude with idle power. The exact distance is based on the wind, the weight and the cruise altitude.
Whenever I land on a simulator my plane goes left or right for a 10-15 degrees I have to be ready to press peddle to straight the plane here I can see that when you touched the ground you was straight like an arrow any secret?😂
We use the rudder pedals to lineup the airplane nose with the runway in the last moments prior touchdown. Afterwards, we also control the direction of travel along the runway centerline with the rudder pedals.
This was far away from a hard landing. It was very smooth. You can watch the vertical speed indicator which confirms the low to no descent rate at touchdown.
We did not pass the city during the approach because it is located somewhere east of the runway. Please watch the departure video to get a view of the city.
@@samkitty5894 You can fly any airplane (even a single engine Cessna) which is approved for instrument flight without looking out of the windows. You need to see something during takeoff and landing, but the rest can be done via the instruments. Good piloting skills are required to fly the plane with and without instruments. Sure, often we use the autopilot. But we have to be able to fly without autopilot, even with defective systems. And landings and takeoffs are also done manually unless it is an autoland approach in dense fog. In addition to the good piloting skills, an Airbus pilot needs to know and understand the computer and system architecture of the airplane. This is true for a single engine Cessna and for any otherThis is completely wrong! For flying an Airbus you need the same piloting skills like for flying a Boeing. In addition, you have to know and understand the
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos That is my point. Pilots of today don't need to know the basics about aviation like the old time pilots that could feel the plane and the weather in their hands. Today's pilots behave like they are inside a simulator...trying to determine what button to press at what time. Honestly, anyone can learn to do that... and according to many RUclips videos "anyone" is flying today's commercial planes.
@@samkitty5894 You are completely wrong here! Pilots of today still need the stick and rudder skills. The same skills which were always required to fly airplanes. In addition, they need to be able to understand and work with modern aviation computer technology in airplanes like the Airbus. Before a pilot is ready to fly an Airbus, several years of training are required. Yes, as an instructor, I can tell somebody who is no pilot via the phone how to get a fully functional Airbus on a runway equipped with autoland capability. But this would not work, if the automation or other systems fail or if the runway has no autoland capability.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Whatever...I can tell YOU have the old school skills, but many of today's young pilots do not...especially those of opposite sex.
@@samkitty5894 During your pilot training and during the airline pilot assessments the skills are checked. No skills, no job. Later, you have to show those skills during your half yearly checks in the simulator. Pilot skills are completely unrelated to men or women. Some pilots are good, others are not that good. At the airlines, we prefer to hire only the good ones.

@@ApproachandDepartureVideos ah ok, interesting! Thank you for your response! (:
Amazing !
Thank you!
Impressive landing
Thank you very much!
Fascinating Videos.. thanks a lot.
Thanks for watching! Please help me and tell everybody about the channel! Thanks in advance and have a great day!
I'm legally blind and I love your videos!
Thanks for sharing your feedback! Have a nice day!
Very professional, as always.
Thanks a lot for watching, your great feedback and your support as a channel member! Have a good day!
Thanks for watching and your feedback! No, it was not me. I was not flying the mentioned airplane. Have a nice day!
Nice video thanks. Do you have or plan to have any RNP approaches with FINAL APP ? 👍👍
Thanks for your good feedback! Here is an approach to Mykonos with final app:

Hi Captain, a very nice video - once again :) How can you speak to ground without pushing a PTT Button? (29:29 and follwoing)
KR
We can set it to "INT". Then it is a "hot" communication system which is always on. This is what we usually do in flight.
22:05 Do you know when is the old main runway (30R) on the Belgrade Aiport renovation expected to be completely finished and replace the new inserted one as the main one again ?
I do not know. But runway 12L/30R looked during our approach like that the work already had been completed.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos i heard they will use the runway you landed on as the new taxiway..
probably the most expensive taxiway in the world rofl
what a waste..

Thanks for pointing out the location of the city!
Hello from Romania. Do you ever fly here? I would love to see a video from here in the future.
Yes.But it depends on my duty schedule, and this is always a surprise. It may take a while. Please stay tuned! Greetings to Romania!
*I always view the German pilots as professional*
I would like to hope ALL pilots are professional
which begs the question....pilots from which country are _un_ professional?
Thanks for your friendly words! But I do assume that all airline pilots in the world are professionals who are doing a good job!
Where was this flight from?
I am wondering when you start to descend when aproachung BEG?
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thank you very much. I learned one more bit from your beautiful profession.
Why do you guys both hold the stick during the approach?
One pilot is flying the airplane with the stick, and the other pilot uses the push to talk button at the stick to communicate with ATC.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thank you very much for the explanation. Best of luck🍀
I’m curious as to what the status message was at 18:22
Good question! Due to technical reasons, maintenance deactivated one engine bleed system before the flight.
Look at that "beautiful" chemtrailed sky
Thanks for sharing your observation.
Hard land
This was far away from a hard landing. It was very smooth. You can watch the vertical speed indicator which confirms the low to no descent rate at touchdown.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos oh ok, than camera shakes pretty much😂
Didn't hear passengers clapping, this is a fake video...
No. Real airplane. The reinforced door keeps most of the cabin sound away from the cockpit.
Can't even see the city in this one, doesn't count.
We did not pass the city during the approach because it is located somewhere east of the runway. Please watch the departure video to get a view of the city.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideosoh, didn't see that in the comments. Thanks
One can fly Airbus without looking out the windows. No real piloting skills required.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
