Rethinking doors (a visual essay of architectural possibility)

  • Subtly shifting our thinking about doors as apertures or openings to thinking about them as wall elements that pivot or slide can create myriad design possibilities. These possibilities can transform the proportions of spaces and more seamlessly integrate the humble door into the architecture of a space.
The massive doors of the great cathedrals in Europe were intentionally designed as humbling constructions. That's because door size and treatment in architecture are excellent ways to shift scale with little effort. By contrast, residential construction has historically employed essentially one size door: 3 feet wide and 7 feet tall, drawn from the rough proportions of its inhabitants.
In this video I explore a variety of ways architects have been rethinking the way we use doors in architectural design today.

I really like that you are getting into the real details of the design rather than just considering the shell of the structure itself.

Yes I agree, one of my weakest spaces in my mind is interior decorating. I can get the wall materials, flooring surfaces but I am very weak on design choices of furnishings, lighting that compliment those aspects.

I'm setting up my design studio. I haven't worked on stuff since furniture design school a few years ago. I did a year for arch as well. I'm getting a lot out of your videos, so I should also say thanks!!! (I'm sure I'll be commenting questions along the way)
I'm sure a lot of people appreciate these videos. Take care, and keep up the good work!

Another good idea is to make Doors devide rooms.
For example the Twin Houses by Bojaus Arquitectura in Madrid

All these large glass doors that open completely - are there not loads of mosquitos and biting flies in these areas?

Personally I really like large pivoting doors. Have they improved sliding door mechanisms these days? I have experienced several internal and external sliding doors that drop and end up becoming extremely heavy and difficult to open and close.
