something i think a lot of people missed is the part where the "poor" dad explains how the best plan is no plan because plans always fail. this is proven right throughout the movie, from the family's plan to infiltrate the rich house to the "rich" dad's plan to scare everyone at the birthday party. this is especially important because the son's letter at the end begins with "i made a plan" therefore implying that his dad will forever be stuck in the basement.

Something I think is worth noting is that, the Kims can’t afford to make plans of any kind, they are living for the day not knowing if tomorrow they’ll have enough to sustain themselves. In contrast, the Parks are making plans to go camping for Da song’s birthday and when that fails they can afford to make a garden party to celebrate after the rain passes. There is also a persistent theme of the Parks making plans at the expense of the Kims own plans, the Parks plan a garden party and the Kims are expected to work on that day even though a deluge left them homeless the night before. No matter what problems the Kims face, the Parks still expect the Kims to alter their plans last minute to conform to their own plans because of social standing.

This film isn't just how they showed poor and rich, it's how they showed it, in what ways they showed it; social, physical, emotional, etc. It's a very broad idea that they were able to condense all of it and create this film it's not just easily pointing out what is poor and what is rich, it's how that idea is executed. I've watched many films that brings in the poor and the rich but 'Parasite' did it flawlessly. So, you should just sit down and think about this for a moment. Think about what broader idea because it seems like your head can't see how much depth this movie has

To reach the top requires one to be a parasite; to have a lack of empathy for anyone around you (the Kims towards the former housekeepers' family and then eventually the other way round) and quite literally kick them out of your way.

I see a lot of comparison between joker and parasite.
The joker portrayed the class divide with huge angst, anger and hatred towards the rich.
Parasite on the other hand showed the world just as it was. It showed the kind of life and choices needed to sustain the life one currently has. Parasite showed how interconnected the world was. That without the poor, the rich couldn't maintain their lifestyle or be rich without to poorer consumers buying from their business. The poor also kinda need to rich for jobs and many necessities for them to buy.
But the most interesting scene for me is the part where Jessica was bleeding out and Mr. Park was asking for the car keys.
They were both fathers, trying their best for their dying child. Could you blame the father for prioritizing his son and asking for his car keys? Could also blame Mr. Kim from staying with Jessica, as she was his daughter?
But in the end the divide was clear. While both fathers were trying to save their child, only one had the capacity to act immediate--the man with his own car. But he had to kind of rely on Mr. Kim to give him the keys. Much like how the wealth of the rich is reliant on the purchases of the many poor.
Mr. Kim had to deal with it however he could. Futile with his efforts as she was stabbed in the heart, maybe portraying that in the end, that poor people are trapped. No matter how much he'd stop the bleeding, she'd still die.

@@happiyyyy Yea that's a good question. Prison would have been a better alternative but I think the symbolism of him ending up in the basement helps the story come full circle. Kim getting stuck in the basement reinforces that he was always and will forever be a "parasite"; destined to live in the shadows of other men and be content with the little scraps he's given. It's also ironic because if he had made a plan or taken different actions, that might not have been his fate.
My personal interpretation is he ends up in a slump bc he's never willing to take responsibility for himself-- much like the former housekeeper's husband. He's given up on life and trying to "make a plan" and instead looks for easy alternatives to survive, even if it's at the expense of his and his family's well being. Just my two cents though...

Spoiler alert. Where I really felt the movie took its place as a masterpiece was how Bong played our internal stereotypes of what a protagonist should be. Upon first thought, the protagonist appears to be the Kim's but I found myself questioning that. And ultimately came away with feeling that the protagonist wasn't a person but an idea. There's a shakespearean quality of portraying the "tragic hero", but that too was pulled away from my grasp. In the end Kiwoo pronounces his plan to go on the straight and narrow to liberate his father. There's no redemption here but just the idea of one so he doesn't fall into the category of a tragic hero. What I was left with after many nights of thinking about the last scene was, Bong never once display any moral shortcomings of Mr Park which would have enabled him to reach the top echelon of society. Meanwhile, we are left with Kiwoo's plans and by any surface those plans are attainable..... but we, probably as a community, walk away feeling his plans are attainable. Though again, they should be possible just like Mr. Park. Therein, there is the underpinning feeling the role of destiny... which is our own projection and our own limitation of success... or do we hold tight to our own dogma that the only way to reach the top is through corruption? Clearly that is not true... but then why not Kiwoo? I'm going to watch this again... excellent film in a long time!

The rich may have privilege over everything but can't you sense the level of closeness among the family members belonging to lower and upper classes. Kim's family may live in the basement and share the small space together. It seems to be unfortunate from a laymen's perspective. But they were always together in the act and cherish the joyful moments and embrace the shortcomings regardless of whether they are in the basement, driver's eatery place or in Park's house. Though they are dirt and poor, the little space in basement always satisfies the idea of a family. On the other hand, Park's family represents the wealth and compliments the luxury life style. The house itself showcase the richness and standard of living they own, yet the dinning and living areas always seems to deserted and we ain't see all the family members together or around the dinning in a single scene expect for the time they took off the vacation. Relationship between the characters also seem to be monotonous and the family members are isolated among themselves in large spaces or in the different rooms. Regardless of the rich and poor status, the human nature tend to long for new and diverse experiences all the time. Metaphorically, Kim's family rejoice their vacation in Park's residency, which to them was something new and exciting where as for Park's family, vacation sounds to be taking a break off from their 'normal' life and to leave the house and go somewhere else for the pleasing experiences and invoking the joy.

Had they just known their place and just work they jobs could have been the best thing to do to keep them living comfortably but they had to “cross the line” and made their self’s comfortable when the Parks were not home, should’ve just ride that gave as long as possible without crossing the line.

Please look at the vertical lines also that appears in various scenes that separates the classes . Lines are very distinct lines. Like the window lines that is between the maid and the owner, and the lower class cannot and don’t cross the lines.

The more i love the video, it often hits me that most of these things aren't usually 'expressed' by the filmmaker and we just look too much into small random things. Not only this video, but most of the breakdown videos of successful films have the same structure. In most such videos out there, the OP looks at the scene and thinks that the director wanted 'this' here because it meant 'this'. And the comments down too go with it saying it's a brilliant thought-provoking scene, when in reality it may not be the case. Anyways it was good to watch this, but i always have the offthought, that these scenes don't usually mean what we think those mean.

I don’t think this is just a capitalist problem. I lived in China, which is state-capitalist authoritarian with communist rhetoric as a cover. What happens there is that anyone who makes something of themselves is assumed to be a scam artist; and so the only people who own anything of value are the people who have friends in the govt’. So even in communist countries; you end up with an impoverished majority tending to the needs of a few powerful families. The thing I love about open market capitalism is that you have freedom of movement and freedom of speech. In quasi-communist countries; you’re only allowed to make businesses with any success if you know the right people and pull the right favors and don’t make anyone look bad; my parents tried to start multiple small businesses when we lived there; and continually got screwed over by some govt’ person’s cousin or neighbor and would end up getting muscled out just for existing.
People who complain about open capitalism have no idea how much bullshit you have to fight to do even basic shit in other systems. Capitalism is flawed; but the fact that we’re even allowed to question open capitalism alter it is in itself a precious privilege that other countries do not allow.
So I roll my eyes every time some American dude who’s three times richer than me just casually throws his privilege under the bus not realizing that China is fucking dirty ya’ll.
I just roll my eyes. Be grateful you’re even allowed on RUclips.
Other than that, I do respect the hell out of this movie; one of the most competent I’ve ever seen. The anti-capitalism stuff rubs me the wrong way, just knowing how much worse the alternatives can get; but the movie is good shit.
    Great video otherwise.

It may seem an unrealistic fantasty that the son will be able to save the Father.. but that is just what is supposed to happen in real life. As a son you are supposed to raise you parents from their current situation. They give you everything so that you can be better for it. That's why that last scene is so powerful. His father literally ascends the stairs thanks to his son's hard work. It happens.. it does not seem unimaginable to me.

The neglected elderly lives there, while middle-high to high class families lived in apartments in Seoul, and low-middle to middle class families live in apartments in the suburbs. While there are wealthy neighborhoods located alongside mountains, it’s not always the case. Monsoon floodings are not a problem either in seoul so there are really no disadvantages of living closer to sea level.

Who gives a shit. Parasite is just an amalgamation of a number of old Hollywood movies and nothing in the film is new or fresh. This is all pure garbage and meaningless. Poor to mediocre acting unoriginal screenplay makes Parasite a garbage. An Oscar just doesn't elevate it from a mediocre B movie to anything else just how a Cannes doesn't elevate the garbage Titane to anything but a B Horror nonsense.
I will take it a step further and site you various examples of how Muslims use various nonsense to elevate a shitty hate literature called Quran into a divine gift.
When will these idiots learn to see through all this BS and find out there was nothing original in this film. Maybe never. Otherwise their existence and source of income becomes nonexistent.

Excellent video! I'm working on my own at the moment and it's interesting to see how many different things you took out of the film that I never had considered. I think it's why the film is doing so well, everyone is walking away with something different but we all have one thing in common...we can't stop thinking about it XD All fantastic points, beautiful editing, really appreciated this!

One very strong metaphor for me is the fight between two poor families that is happening in the basement of the rich family's house. It definitely is not put there just for dramatic effect. As I see it, it is a clear visualisation of the struggle that lower class has to deal with in today's society, the struggle that is happening all of the time, the fight between those in need for better jobs, higher status and salary's, but to get to them you have to be better than bunch of other lower class people who want the same thing. The thing is, number of available positions is restricted, and only few are going to get there. What you get as a result is fight in which every possible way to get to your target is justified. Simply put, it's a bloodbath. And while this is happening, the rich are enjoying the life, having a laugh, partying, and underneath them, in their near distance, sometimes even in their own basement, the battle for survival is happening, the battle they themselves are not even aware of, and why should they be? Lower class struggle doesn't affect them in any way, and it's not until that very fight compromises their own convenience, that they become aware of it's existence.

I get a very different feeling from that. The opportunities weren't limited for them, they could just easily agree to let the housekeeper in from time to time or to help them now they had power, but no. Just a few minutes ago, the Kim mother was talking about how she would be better if she was rich but she was even worse. There are so many movies just shoving "rich are evil" down out throats nowadays but Parasite was so much more than that.
The Platform illustrates your point much better.

I just saw the film a couple days ago, and the ending really stood out to me. I immediately thought about the myth of The Dream of success, and how they will work and wait and hope for when the opportunity comes, though it probably won’t. It won’t undo all they’ve lost already.... the years of struggle, pain, isolation, the death and maltreatment of those in the same situation (the previous owners)... the idea that once the son gets /his/ way, all his father will have to do is come up the stairs. He must achieve the improbable for even the chance to elevate others.
    “Until then. So long.”
    Chills.
The details about the physical barriers really helped explain a lot of what I was feeling but couldn’t articulate / quite pinpoint.
Thank you for this video. You’re one of my favorite channels!

The ending song for this movie was sung by the poor's son. It's called 500 something years, I can't remember, it's how long he needs to work to buy the house

What makes this movie a winner, is how much conversation is going on about it after seeing it. I never saw the perspective of what you just described. But now it makes the movie richer visually. The story line, the actors, the set, all being talked about more so then most movies. A craft, an art and a story well presented.
