Hello, I just found your channel and have a question: What do you mean by "Learning how to say no"? In which situations? And I had no idea autocad was an outdated software, I always thought it was the Best...
@@oscarpritzker6278 I mean just don’t overcommit to anything!! Hanging out with friends every night outside of studio might not be possible along w working a double shift at your job - it’s tricky but learn to balance your needs and wants in life and say no to things you just simply don’t have time for!
Great video Nat. As I watched the video I thought back over my last 3 years and wanted to share some of the things I wish I knew if I were to start again. 1) Architecture isn’t just designing buildings. You need a mix of skills - or a willingness to learn. A lot of students go into architecture school thinking they’ll just be drawing buildings and creating cool designs. Architecture is a mix of so many different skills and so you need a mix of skills to be successful - or - you need a willingness and an open mind to learning new skills and not getting stuck on old ways. 2) Architecture is difficult. Just because there’s no exams, it doesn’t mean it’s easy. In fact. Architecture can be quite difficult. Architecture is very much a profession involving a lot of problem solving and deep thinking. It’s not necessarily an easy course to study but if you’re up for the challenge it can be extremely rewarding. 3) It’s a long road ahead. Get ready for a long journey - you don’t stop learning. Ever. I don’t just mean get ready for 5-7 years of formal education - I mean get ready to learn every single day for the rest of your life. Architects, or good architects, never stop learning. Something my dad always tells me is to improve in any little way, every single day. Doing so, you’re becoming a better person and you’re changing your life for the better. Get ready for a long degree, followed by a long profession of learning and experimenting with new things. 4) There’s no “set way” of doing things. Try new things and experiment. Architecture is subjective. There’s no set-in stone way of designing or doing things. Those students who are most successful in architecture school are the ones who step outside their comfort zone, step away from what everyone else is doing and experiment with their own ideas and ways of doing things. 5) Those who practice outside of their formal education do best. Architecture school, and any formal education really, are made to teach generalised information for the masses. If you want to gain specialised skills and learn something difficult that others aren’t, you need to practice architecture outside of your university degree. You need to push yourself to better yourself in ways others aren’t. That’s how you create opportunities for yourself and strive to be a better person. 6) Don’t get discouraged by other’s experiences from school. Social media is filled with architecture memes and comments from other students, complaining how they don’t get any sleep, they don’t have any money, they haven’t learnt anything. Don’t let other people’s experiences discourage you from studying architecture. If you stick to your own guns and stay in your own lane. Focus on bettering yourself every single day in every single way - you’ll find yourself getting better and better. Don’t let what everyone else is doing influence you and your thoughts. 7) The more time you spend on a project, the better it’s going to be. But your design will never be finished. I’ve found that the more time you spend on something, the better you’re going to be at it. If you were to put students’ grade into a chart against how much time they spend on their classes - you’d see a direct correlation between the amount of time they spend on it to the grade they get. The more time you spend, the higher the grade. You need to be able to manage your time and not leave everything for the last minute. And again, this is something you’ll learn with experience. 8) You must be a good listener. Architecture is very much about listening. If you don’t listen, you can’t design to the client’s brief, you can’t work with engineers, surveyors, builders and other contractors, you can’t make the changes your teachers are suggesting. If you’re a good listener, you’ll go very far. 9) Just say yes. There’s nothing stopping you from doing a semester and then dropping out. You have plenty of time. If you’re 17 years old or 47 years old, you’re not even halfway through your life. You’ve got plenty of time. Don’t think that you’ll be wasting 6 months of your life for trying architecture school. It’s an experience nonetheless and if you think you’ll enjoy it - just say yes and give it a go. Having this give it a go mentality will take you far in anything you do in life, so it’s worth adopting this mindset. I hope someone finds this helpful. Good luck everyone and thanks for the video Nat!
thank you for watching Kyle!! I cannot agree with your 6th point and 8th point more. Definitely essential for survival!! Thank you for taking the time to write everything out!! There is a lot of good takeaways here(: P.S. I haven't had time yet to watch your new documentary but I will catch up this weekend!! Cannot wait cannot wait!
oh the late night coffee sessions and model making in studio are some of the best times with studio friends but the worst times. It's the strangest thing hahaha I am waiting until archi schools stop requiring models so much though!! I don't think a lot of firms still make them actually. And if the firms do, most outsource nowadays!!
@@UnravelingArchitecture I work in mostly interior design, and our company makes small-scale physical models because we work with a lot of materials that vary in shadow quality and light patterns. They're mostly quick studies though - like how Pixar tests ideas to animate - before going to finalize an iteration or change order. Sometimes we do lifesize mockups for one interchangeable component.
@@cazwalt9013 That's why God invented engineers. Architects don't need it. Calculus was my worst subject in college. I never used it after barely passing that year. Geometry, however, is something that is essential and you really should have an excellent background in it.
im a freshman studying architecture and i have noticed a lot of people in my studio have some sort of high ego. i am a person willing to hear constructive criticism without my feelings getting involved but some people in my studio can’t bear to hear other peoples opinions, its hard for me to connect with them and knowing how important it is to make connections it really scares me…
It seems like architecture school is the same everywhere 😭 I’m majoring in architecture here in Brazil and can relate 100% with what you said, especially everybody going out on weekends and we having to stay home to finish a project
I graduated in B.Arch last month in India... At one point you realize just how much your perspective on things changed because of your major and its mind blowing!🤯
I have started studying architecture this year but dropped out because of my poor mental health. However I still want to go back to it when i'm better!! I don't see myself doing anything else.
Great comments. I'm also a graduate of OSU, class of 1970 with a B.S. in Architectrue (I think that I may have been the first to go that route). M.Architecture from Clemson University, 1980. I'm now 74 and still at it. Currently, I'm designing a 20k sf museum for our county. I've worked for medium-sized architectural firms, very large firms, but the most enjoyable and by far the most time was as the principal of my own practice. I kid my friends who ask, "Why aren't you retired?' I'm having too much fun. You will find that you can identify work-around practices which your clients will never know about - don't take that route. Do the best that you can with everything that you do from designing that ADA compliant restroom to designing that vast atrium lobby. It's not been work. I've had fun all my life. Enjoy the journey. Good luck to you. It goes by way too fast. Hey! I could have been a dentist - yuck!
Ayeee I’m 20 yrs old & on my 2nd yr of studying architecture! But it’s been hard because I’m always practically a father to my siblings & helping my mother pay bills so it’s alrdy been a hard start, but my commitment is SUPER STRONG
I love how honest this is! Your passion for architecture is really evident and hearing these things makes me ever more excited to get started. Definitely guilty of saying yes to everything too....there are so many interesting extra-curriculars you can do in college I wonder how realistic it is to have hobbies outside of archi at all aha.
@@UnravelingArchitecture Haha thank yous:) Haha i'm sure you're right - there's a whole wealth of archi student productivity hacks videos to be made for sure!
I'm going to be 60 this year and I'm in the same boat. It's been what I have always wanted to do. As well as engineering. But life gets in the way and makes you have to get a job. Maybe after I retire. I'm trying to design my dream retirement home now.
21 years old here. Studying mechanical engineering at eth zurich, and there were at least 2 people older than 60 participating in the exams:) so go for it!
@@basil5863 Thanks for your encouragement! However, I am a retired chemistry and physics teacher and I am loving retirement. I am hoping to do some remodeling on my home to my own design which might satisfy my old itch.
honestly this is very reassuring. I'm planning to study architecture starting this fall and being the stressed, perfectionist, over-achiever I am, I've been doing a ginormous amount of research and I was, therefore, aware of most things you said. The most discouraging thing about it is that people doubt of my capacities (my friends and family), even though I genuinely think and feel like it's the right career path for me. It's heart-wrenching and I hate ending up doubting myself and my choices, before even starting my journey...but thanks to your videos, i think i'll be able to sort of put things into perspective:) thank you
My boyfriend wants to be an architect and sometimes he doubts himself so I’ve been helping him do his research and your video was great!! You explained everything so well and I can’t wait to show it to him because he would be an amazing architect. 😊
This was such a great video! I'm a high school senior who chose to major in architecture and a lot of RUclips videos about this field are kind of negative and pessimistic. But I love your honesty and your holistic perspective; now I'm actually excited to do architecture school and hopefully study abroad in Europe!
I’m a junior in high school and my whole life my dream has been to be a architect but I just keep losing motivation I’m really scared I won’t succeed and just waste my time and spend money I also feel like I’m not prepared I don’t know what I need to be in college or anything do you have a video about anything like this???
Oh no! Seriously don't exclude architecture from your life with the fear of not having success in your future. I have a couple other videos on the channel about majoring in architecture you can check out (should you major in architecture: ruclips.net/video/3_Sctj69pVA/видео.html ) I also did a pros and cons list for architecture (ruclips.net/video/pPkStojzUak/видео.html ) Seriously do not knock it til you try it!! There is so so much I love about architecture and couldn't imagine studying anything else!! I don't have any motivational videos on architecture but perhaps I'll make one (: It's a fantastic field and a great major ~ I love it.
I feel you and I am already on my second year college,. I am just taking my general courses first. But it does make me rethink if this is the career for me.
Hey, so first of all, it's ok to feel like this and sometimes it's not bad to think this way because it makes you consider so many other options that can be so great for you. I was literally on the same boat as you and idk if you wanna read my response (it's kinda lengthy) but if you do, hopefully it helps. My whole high school years I wanted to be an architect, that's all I worked for. I did a bunch of art/design courses and calculus in HS so I could get the most basics down for the design side and the math side. I applied to a school in NY and got accepted, as well some in my home state, but for some reason at the very end, I just started to feel like maybe architect wasn't for me (which actually broke my heart and made me very upset for my 1st year of college). I ended up going into college doing my generals first, I was undecided in my major, then I thought maybe I wanted to do Graphic Arts & Design, after another 2 more semesters I realized I still wasn't really happy with my almost decided major (Graphic Arts & Design). With the start of the pandemic I had time to kind of slow down and really think. After much thought I finally realized one thing, I've always liked the idea of business since I was young, and since I had already done a lot of calculus I decided that I wanted to do a business major in Finance. Now in my first semester doing business courses, I finally feel happy, but most of all, excited to learn which is the way I felt before becoming a senior in high school. Getting back that feeling of excitement and desire to learn is what made me realize that business is what I want to do. So don't worry, things always work out. Maybe architect is for you and you're just nervous, but maybe these thoughts can help you see that the possibilities are endless and there's so much this world offers. Really think about how you feel and maybe that can help you. Anyways, I wish you the best and may you do great this year and your senior year! Good luck! (:
I initially went to school for arch. b/c someone talked me out of going for English/writing. I loved it, although I slept in my studio most of the time lol! But it wasn't my 'path' and so here I am 10 years later getting my master's in English and writing lol It's crazy.
sounds like a similar situation to mine. always had an interest in architecture but decided not to do it and go into tourism and events, now im a 3 month internship off of graduating, with plans to pursue architecture after
I graduated from college at 52 with a bachelor's in Interior Design. Your recollection of your college years sound very familiar. I couldn't be happier with deciding to enter the world of architecture and design.
I'm 16, looking at videos about what are good majors for college. I checked out marine science, veterinary, - they were cool but it didn't peek my interest like architecture did. and so far architecture seems pretty cool! I like learning computer softwares that involve creating because it's fun although I'm not good at it! LOL and I'd actually be ok with learning more into that! My one concern would be things like how much math would I have to learn...... cuz...hunny I suck at that frfr
hey, for anyone thinking of (or currently) studying architecture I just wanted to leave this message here. A lot of people and teachers highlight the hard work and time that goes into architecture, I do however want to mention that it is possible to study architecture with a healthy work-life balance and have your weekends and evenings free. Sometimes it may not be possible in the final week of your project, but aside from that it is. Personally I fell into the classic trap of workaholism when starting architecture. but after declining mental health I decided to treat it more as a 9 to 5. With this structure you may not always have the most impressive project, but you can have a more balanced life. Secondly to design it is also incredibly beneficial to have varied experiences, thus actively making time for multiple hobbies can give you a new perspective on a project. Always do what feels right for you and create the balance you desire and to finish here is a little joke I think is fitting: "What do they call a graduated medical student at the bottom of his class?" " a doctor"
This was honestly the most helpful video ever! I completely agree that you constantly question whether it's going to be right for you, but at the end of the day if you are a creative, it's probably going to be a lot of fun :-)
"Studying architecture has opened a whole new world and and so many doors for me, and I am so exited to see what the future has is in store for me." That rhymed XD. Still very wise and informative though.
I love this so much! I'm currently in my 4th year of architecture school and this was so relatable! It's so refreshing to see that I'm not the only one who gets wavering motivation or struggles with model making. Thank you for being so honest!
I'm in only my third week of first semester and we've already had to build three models so far in just one class.. Sleep no longer exists to me. I also double as my husband's full time caregiver so my life consists of school and taking care of him. What is free time? I'm also taking it online which I feel has made it way harder for me to get better at certain aspects that others oncampus work on in studio with other people to make at-the-time suggestions.
Oh I’m so sorry - you’re really balancing a lot. I recommend waking up early to knock out homework - there are limited distractions in the morning. Set a “time limit” for yourself - so you aren’t killing yourself for a grade or a project. You have bigger things to worry about. Grades don’t necessarily matter. So yes, please get the work done, but I hope you can find a better balance and take care of yourself mentally and physically
I'm a senior in high school and have been interested in architecture for years now, this video was so helpful for getting a better idea of what majoring in architecture would look like! I so excited and terrified all at the same time!!!
Me on my third year, and having the courses online is even more of a challenge. & yes I can relate to everything you mentioned 🥲 I think one of the best things I did before going into the program, I travelled throughout Europe and when professors would talk about famous architectural buildings (I’ve been to a majority of ) and it was nice explaining my personal opinion 🥰
Unraveling Architecture It’s been a great experience! The strangest thing is that in every city I visited I met architects and designers that focus in different areas ! There’s much more to explore 🤩
There`s only one thing I wish I had knew while majoring in architecture; study HISTORY, all of the architecture done before one is greater than anything one could design.
Hey there! I am a landscape architecture student from Europe, and our field is extremely underappreciated in comparison to 'regular' architecture. So on top of agreeing with everything you said (because we deal with exactly the same stuff, it's the same major, after all, everything is just leafier and greener lol) we have to also deal with always being put down and being called gardeners. But I love it so much I wouldn't change my major for the world! Love your videos btw.! Can't wait for more.
yes I got that feeling a lot whenever I talked to a frustrated landscape architecture student. I don't understand why hahah landscape architects do work that "regular" architects can't so it doesnt seem right to me. Anyways you are much more than a "gardener" don't let the haters get you down(:
My dad graduated with PhD in architecture from one of the most prestigious schools in Italy. I thought, hey, why not, let's give it a try. As I was in high school and looked at the bigger picture, I realized being an architecture means you are an artist... you have to be super creative. And I got none of them... so glad I didn't major in it. I would have been an absolute failure.
I think you're a bit hard on yourself. Everyone is an artist at some point everyone thinks differently. That's art and that's creativity itself. Also that's the Idea of going into a school .. you learn .. and then you apply your ideas and thoughts and creativity into a project. How can you call yourself lacking something without even trying to search for it. Everyone is different. Everyone can be an artist. It's not a fixed thing. You can't call yourself a doctor without getting a M. D degree.. that's understandable. But you can't call yourself not an artist without even giving yourself the chance of wonder and imagination
@@olarashad8189 Sorry, I am just shit in that department. I've a huge blockage in my head that cannot be unlocked unfortunately. I've come to accept my limitations.
@@valeenoi2284 you remind me so much of myself it makes me terrified. To be honest, i came here to say that in a way I'm also saying this to myself. But you're right. But you're also wrong. You gotta be skeptical. You ought that to yourself at least. You gotta ask the hard questions. What if you're just afraid. Mind always looks for the easy and short paths, if the mind think conveniencing you that you have a blockage so that won't get you to hardwork. It'll do that. You gotta be skeptical about any choice you're going to take and you gotta always try. Life is all about trying and making your own roads
This was honestly so nice to hear someone outside of my network talk about our major. Thank you for sharing this, I am currently in the biggest creative block/unmotivated in my second to last semester in the architecture program and I was starting to think it wasn’t for me. Just having you remind me that it’s okay to go through that and to compare myself to everyone else makes me feel better and reminds me why I chose it in the first place thank you!!
Thank you so much!! I wanted to major in architecture and everyone has been saying it’s heartbreaking so this really made everything look a little more positive 😂
I got my Architecture degree in 1984 and it sounds like the academic experience hasn't changed much in almost 40 years. The one exception is the software. We didn't have any back then. We actially drew with pencils! Physical models were tough then too. We would typically do quick sketch models or study models for preliminary juries and a much more refined model for the final jury. Some of the 3D software now almost eliminates the need for a model. Good luck with your career.
As a 2nd year (2nd semester) in architecture, it’s interesting to say the least. (I’m learning rhino right now and oh god the amount of commands) Over here we can’t be in studio but thankfully I decided to roommate with all architect buddies so we constantly bounce off of each other’s ideas. Definitely have some doubts about the major but only on deadline nights!
Great video! You seem to have so much passion for architecture, and we need more of that! Too many people underestimate the power of architecture, not just for functionality, but for well-being. Also I studied Electrical Engineering at City College of New York, and one of the inside jokes my Engineering classmates and I had was that we NEVER saw any architecture majors and wonder if they even existed, even though we initially took the same classes. And it was because they were always studying constantly lol. Consider yourself subscribed! :D
I'm applying for architecture this year! This is definitely the most useful video I saw for the "insight" purpose. Thank you so much! The more I look at it I feel that this might as well be the field I can take and enjoy
I’m very curios about architecture cause my parents told me to futher my studies on this course. My grades is good but it was not enough for me to become a doctor or an engineer, so here I am. Good to know it’s a nice job.
3rd year architecture student there. I agree with all your points! I think I have experienced almost all the same things all you talked about! My back is terrible...and the social life thing is totally true...the romance thing is so true too! When somebody dares somebody else, EVERYBODY KNOWS! but I love architecture and I don’t regret anything about It :) sometimes you have those architecture identity crisis moments...but I was also one of those who changed from biomed to architecture...and I feel like I’m the happiest in architecture school :)
I'm literally sitting and making a terrible model in my first year of Architecture and nodding away to your video praying I don't have to pull an all nighter tonight!!!!!😭 I finally feel like I'm not the only one suffering Thankyou ❤️
hello! Thank you for your video. I am thinking of studying Architecture. Since I was a little child, I was always making designs, DIYs and especially "products" out of thick paper that can keep me more organized. For example, I created a small box, in which I can store my bracelets and other jewelry in a good manner so they can be easily used and in a beautiful manner displayed. Moreover, for a period of time (till now sometimes) I was obsessed watching youtube videos about tiny houses and how all the rooms and furniture can be placed in order to make life convenient for the owners. Also, I love thinking about houses, so that they can be functional and offer opportunities for people in their daily life, that people may haven't even thought about. I believe that the maximum functionality adds the real beauty. After having accomplished that, I am thinking about their beautiful extra features, such as colors, decorations, unusual shapes etc. I am more like a problem solver. I wouldn't say that I am fascinated with the idea of creating something "abstract", which has no functionality and also creates more problems to engineers. Moreover, I really respect the history of pure art, but that is not something I would like to be committed to. I love Maths and always having been good at it, but I wouldn't like studying engineering, since it is not that human-oriented. What do you think? Should I study Architecture?
i guess this is the most honest video about architecture ive ever seen, after 2 years in majoring in architecture, i just found out that what happens in normal and i dont really have to quit, thank you i enjoyed it
I graduate tomorrow with my BS in Interior Architecture. Going back in the fall for a dual masters in architecture and landscape. Everything you’ve said is so true, it’s a little scary but very comforting that everyone pretty much has the same experience 😂
What killed my architecture career was the product. Finding clients with deep pockets to build anything. So, I became a mechanical design engineer for manufacturing companies. Architecture is a dream career...
If anyone in the comments is unsure about studying architecture, remember not every architect has dreamt their whole life of being one. I (in Europe) had dropped out of a COMPLETELY different course after 1.5 years with no idea what I wanted to do. Then I see a news report about Zaha Hadid’s death while on a family holiday, first time I EVER considered it and 5 years later am now studying for my masters in architecture. It has a high drop out rate (about a quarter dropped out in first year and we lost another quarter through people repeating the year) so don’t go in expecting an easy ride but I always adored how I was never bored (like my previous course rip)
Oh my... I just find my long time seeked honest, original and inspiring person linked to architecture study. I was soo waiting for someone like you! Ah! Thank you for being here. What you said about the history or architecture, I'm feeling the same. I had the pleasure to have a semester abroad in Italy, and girl... it was just like how you described it. Also I'm living in Europe, so not that big of a deal, but the feeling is the same.
Fanni!! Thank you for this comment!! I will say having an interest in traveling and experiencing the world and other cultures will help anyone thrive in architecture! It’s great to hear that you’ve been studying abroad and learning more about architecture!!(: Welcome!! I’m so happy you’re here and happy to help out(:

Try to make the floors bigger, so you can paste the walls onto it Try to make the vertical walls a little thicker, so there is more stability(do it's easier to glue) Also Thanks for the vid It is gonna help me decide my career ltr in life Thanks!
yeesh. I just wrapped up my first year of architecture school and i’m pretty discouraged. I love architecture, and creating, and architecture as an art form. But man this year was so so rough. I didn’t even get to go on campus because of covid, and I just learned everything from my laptop in my room at home. I came here looking to see what the future could potentially hold, some outside motivation that could drive me to continue doing this. As of right now I am BEYOD discouraged and burnt out from the overwhelming amount of stress and expectations of my professors. I so enjoy the idea of this field and creating spaces for people... but I’m just not sure if I can handle mentally. On the bright side I have learned so much about time management and responsibilities, so I am happy I have that. However that doesn’t change the fact that I was just up for 36 hours straight trying to finish my final project, and then still not being satisfied with my work at the end (also also getting ripped on by the jury). I feel like total shit. I’m going to take a week or so to calm down and decompress before making any decisions about the future. But if I do chooses to stay, I really hope it gets better... i really don’t want to leave it edit: (i’m not trying to discourage anyone from going into this field, i just needed to get that off my chest, and everyone’s experience is different! you won’t know how you feel until you try:))
Hi Peyton! In the defense of architecture school, I don't think many students had a good experience online. I hope that you don't give up on it just yet. This year was extremely challenging for many individuals. Architecture also plays on one's personal experiences and relationships with physical spaces - and that's near impossible to teach from your bedroom. I know this year students regardless of their major lost all motivation. But I hope you give it another shot. Next semester hopefully should be in person for everyone. There is so much more to learn, experience, and discover. You're learning such a unique skill set - and humans have universally practiced architecture for tens of thousands of years. If you think about it it's a universal language and can be incredibly inspiring. SO!! There is good and bad things about the major. But I hope next semester you still give it a go, and hopefully be surprised with how you grow as a designer
mam the beauty of ur eyes are distracting me from the topic, i promise i am a girl and this is a genuine compliment, ur vdo helped me a lot n i am mentally prepared for what's comin
I think the number one thing you need to consider is if you want to become a licensed architect make sure you are in an accredited program or are fine with doing the education alternative later when you are working in the field.
I remember in my 2nd year, one of my profs graduated from Harvard and he was the one giving my final project critique. I didnt sleep at all going into the presentation and I legit panicked and cried in front of everyone. It was so embarassing.
Very honest and true video. I can relate so much to your point as a masters graduate from UK. I think the biggest challenge while studying architecture is time management and it requieres alot of sacrifices but it's all worth it when you see your ideas comes to life at the end.
This video was so good! I’m looking to study architecture in the UK this year and I can’t wait after watching your video. Going through the ups and downs and meeting new people and learning new skills really sounds like a whole lot of fun to me. Thank you 😊
Hi Alfie!! That is great to hear!! And really exciting!! What school are you hoping to study at? It's so fun! I'm so excited to hear that you're excited bahaha
You just made my dayy!!! I am studying Architecture and I was just in a moment that I was no more motivated , but you made me realise how beautiful it is even that it is hard! so far everything said by you is 100% true😍
I have never had coffee because my body naturally keeps me up. I have been preparing to major in this since middle school. Im a freshmen in high school , but Im ready
So glad I wasn't the only one that went through these things! Even with all the research I did before my first year, I definitely wasn't ready. Better prepared for second year I think
Hello. I will soon be starting my first year at an architecture college. I am extremely excited but slightly scared as well. Your vid gave me an insight but I am still a little scared...
architecture sparked my interest but my problem is that I am not that so "creative" person but I know If I want to be creative, I can be. So, do I need to have a good drawing skill to be an architect. I am still learning the fundamentals this year
As long as you're developing your skills and find a way to express your design intentions that should be enough to keep building on and moving forward through your program.
@@whitneystone1386 pursue architecture if you really wanted it. Make those people proud of you. I'm on two weeks on Architecture and so far so good. Math is not that hard if you take your time to understand it.
As a senior Architecture student, I just watched this video to see if others are suffering the same way I do and I related to everything single thing! Your energy is absolutely amazing 😍I loved it!
Hello fellow Architecture Grad! I hold a Bachelor of Architectural Science Degree from Ryerson University in Toronto Canada. Your explanations took me down memory lane of when I studied Architecture! It's a great breakdown of the details that come along when you are an Architectural student. I just made a video my self about what I've done with a degree in Architecture so far. It's something that might interest you as well. I'm about 20 years into my career at this point so I've had a wide variety of experiences over the years! Keep up the great videos! By the way, I suffered with insomnia for years after studying Architecture. It took me almost 2 to 3 years after finishing the program before I could sleep somewhat normal again. But to this day I still find my self not able to sleep all night from time to time, my old Architecture student mind kicks in and just doesn't want to shut off! Cheers! :)
throughout my studies of architecture I went through a lot of very low downs and high ups. Now I am close to graduate and I am soooo proud of my self I never gave up 😂
Firstly I wanna say that i love your video! As an architecture graduate I can say that everything you said is completely accurate. One thing I do want to mention is that architectural education really does not prepare you for professional work. I think it’s important to mention because it could be assumed that studios are an emulation of the office environment and work culture, and maybe they were intended to be but they very much are not. Terms that sound so common place like gutter or rafter are surprisingly very scarce in architectural education. The main focus of the education is to shape the way you think in terms of design and the nitty gritty that is expected of you professionally is largely missed. I could rant about how I would reform the education but I would highly recommend to anybody considering this route to learn construction on your own, and I mean really learn it. Construction classes in architecture school will not cut it because studios suck the life out of you and make it really hard to focus on these secondary classes like construction and structures (although they are the forefront of realistic and professional work). So make sure to visit construction sites after hours and take tons of pictures and notes. Maybe work a job in construction after graduating for a little bit. Definitely watch RUclips videos of all of the talented contractors and handymen (and women). These are slept on but invaluable resources, and I really wish I knew that.
@@keishiekim6111 when i was younger there was this show where this team would always help families whose house is in bad condition so they redesigned it and i thought that was really cool but also its the only career that my parents accept me to do from the other ones i was gonna go with hehe
Super insightful!! Thanks, Architecture is definitely something I’ve wanted to do, for some time now it’s really something I want to pursue. It’s seemed very intimidating coming fresh out of high school but I would really love to give a go and fuel my passion for creating and building.😊
oh my god.Can you please help me???? your answer can change my entire life. i am 19 and i kind of feel i born being architect. i dont want to say that i am special or very into it but.. since i was teen i saw some dreams when i was sleep like 5 times a year. it has been few years. this year i suddenly realized that. i have no idea how can i describe how crazy these places are and i do remember them. god i dont know how can tell what i mean while i cant understand why is this happen for me. i am not good at drawing or numbers at all just creativity. but there is sth, i am not just intrested in that area. i love observing new things and the world around me. cause of all these things i planned to study biotech which is wonderful and then learn architecting and use nature, creativity, technology and biology to create a very new aspect while i am not really limited in only one specific job. how do you think? by the way i am not from a expansive country so things and the process of making things happen are so hard even for leaving the country. i have about 2 dreams and they came to my mind without invitation. i dont know if my desires are true or not but they all what i have. and if i see them while others not then i should do them and that would be right. right now i am studying to enter my university
thanks for this video! You balanced positive and negative aspects really nicely and it feels like you give a very realistic impression of what it's like to study architecture :)
I would also add the requirements for licensure. I wish someone told me I needed a professional or masters degree before I could even sit for the 6 Architectural Registration Exams. I’ve just recently passed my first ARE at 27, so note that undergrad is really just the beginning of the journey to licensed architect. For anyone doubting the workload, it really does prepare you for some of the deadlines you’ll get in practice. You also get much faster with each project and once you figure out the workflow that’s best for you, you’ll have more time you can spend on developing your concepts further. Also, I highly recommend Clemson’s architecture programs.
Congrats on taking that first exam. I recently sent in my request form to sit for the ARE in NY a year out of graduate school. Now I’m just trying to get myself to start actually taking the exams. I completely agree with finding your work flow. After the absolute disaster of not sleeping ever the first few semesters. I knew I never wanted to do that again so it made me figure out a way to work in a timely manner that wasn’t high stress all the time.

I graduated 15 years ago. I didn't know students STILL build physical models! Ah, I can smell the zap-a-gap, kicker, and coffee.... 😩
oh the late night coffee sessions and model making in studio are some of the best times with studio friends but the worst times.
Great comments. I'm also a graduate of OSU, class of 1970 with a B.S. in Architectrue (I think that I may have been the first to go that route). M.Architecture from Clemson University, 1980. I kid my friends who ask, "Why aren't you retired?' I'm having too much fun. You will find that you can identify work-around practices which your clients will never know about - don't take that route. Seriously do not knock it til you try it!!
Good luck! (:

hey, for anyone thinking of (or currently) studying architecture I just wanted to leave this message here.
Always do what feels right for you and create the balance you desire and to finish here is a little joke I think is fitting:

I’m only 11 and I’m have always wanted to be an architect
The more I look at it I feel that this might as well be the field I can take and enjoy
thank you for making this! currently considering architecture. i found this super helpful. keep it up!
Glad it was helpful!(: Best wishes selecting a major!
And now I'm here when I'm in my senior year
What school do you go to? How exciting!
I’m very curios about architecture cause my parents told me to futher my studies on this course.
My grades is good but it was not enough for me to become a doctor or an engineer, so here I am.
Good to know it’s a nice job.
when you're on trip and you got knowledge about the building, suddenly you feel smarter✨✨✨
i felt that ✨✨✨
Im in third year and I can’t agree more
3rd year architecture student there.
I'm literally sitting and making a terrible model in my first year of Architecture and nodding away to your video praying I don't have to pull an all nighter tonight!!!!!😭
I finally feel like I'm not the only one suffering
Thankyou ❤️
I'm going to second year Iin architecture and this is sooo RELATABLE!
Thank you! I'm studying at Newcastle University in the UK
Thank you!
i guess this is the most honest video about architecture ive ever seen, after 2 years in majoring in architecture, i just found out that what happens in normal and i dont really have to quit, thank you i enjoyed it
I graduate tomorrow with my BS in Interior Architecture.
I’m literally a computer science major idk why I’m watching this 😭
Come to the dark side aka architecture(::
If anyone in the comments is unsure about studying architecture, remember not every architect has dreamt their whole life of being one.
I (in Europe) had dropped out of a COMPLETELY different course after 1.5 years with no idea what I wanted to do. Then I see a news report about Zaha Hadid’s death while on a family holiday, first time I EVER considered it and 5 years later am now studying for my masters in architecture. It has a high drop out rate (about a quarter dropped out in first year and we lost another quarter through people repeating the year) so don’t go in expecting an easy ride but I always adored how I was never bored (like my previous course rip)
oh that's great to hear that you tried it out and loved it. It definitely never gets dull(:
Damn it, I'm getting frustrated with my plates so I took a break and saw this video. Thanks for this 10:53
I’m a junior in high school and I really think Architecture is the career for me, it sounds so fun, your videos have really helped me
You concluded it really well I can relate with all of these points having completed my bachelor's degree in architecture.👍
Congrats on finishing your degree!!!!
It’s great to hear that you’ve been studying abroad and learning more about architecture!!(:
Welcome!! I’m so happy you’re here and happy to help out(:
I study architecture in Kenya and damn I agree with everything you said 😭
Rising senior rn and Im doing the pre college architecture program at Cornell (online this year), and I am abt to explode the amount of work we get assigned and how the due dates are literally everyday and we hav reviews every Friday
Also my TA is super passive aggressive
Thank you so much, I’m a Gr. 10 student debating on being an architect and this is somewhat helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Good Luck!

Just a little recommendation of mine,
If you don't mind....
Try to make the floors bigger, so you can paste the walls onto it
Try to make the vertical walls a little thicker, so there is more stability(do it's easier to glue)
Also
Thanks for the vid
It is gonna help me decide my career ltr in life
Thanks!
But if I do chooses to stay, I really hope it gets better... i really don’t want to leave it
edit: (i’m not trying to discourage anyone from going into this field, i just needed to get that off my chest, and everyone’s experience is different! you won’t know how you feel until you try:))
I’ll be graduating this April and i wish i watched this before starting the major! It was lot of fun tho!!
Congratulations on your upcoming graduation!! It is fun that's for sure and a great new way to express yourself(:
mam the beauty of ur eyes are distracting me from the topic, i promise i am a girl and this is a genuine compliment, ur vdo helped me a lot n i am mentally prepared for what's comin
16!!! I always wonder if architecture is still my calling
@@UnravelingArchitecture Either the University of Sheffield, Cardiff or Lincoln if you've heard of any of those.
Im a freshmen in high school , but Im ready
you're built for this major 😤😤❤
So glad I wasn't the only one that went through these things! Even with all the research I did before my first year, I definitely wasn't ready. Better prepared for second year I think
Hello. I will soon be starting my first year at an architecture college. I am extremely excited but slightly scared as well. Your vid gave me an insight but I am still a little scared...
@@UnravelingArchitecture thank you very much ☺
Nice work. I've been in the field for over 35 years. It's nice to see that some things haven't changed.
Haha I don't think things ever will - we'll always be sleep deprived!
architecture sparked my interest but my problem is that I am not that so "creative" person but I know If I want to be creative, I can be. So, do I need to have a good drawing skill to be an architect. I am still learning the fundamentals this year
As long as you're developing your skills and find a way to express your design intentions that should be enough to keep building on and moving forward through your program.
I was told I was not good at math and I'm going to go continue
@@whitneystone1386 pursue architecture if you really wanted it. Make those people proud of you. I'm on two weeks on Architecture and so far so good. Math is not that hard if you take your time to understand it.
As a senior Architecture student, I just watched this video to see if others are suffering the same way I do and I related to everything single thing! Your energy is absolutely amazing 😍I loved it!
Keeping up good vibes in the major is half the battle!! Congrats on almost completing your architecture degree!! Homestretch!
For an architecture do you need to have excellent drawing skills?
I’m in 8th grade and i want to be an architect and this was so interesting!!
Samee😭
same
Same I’m not really sure tho😅
Me tooooooo!!! Want to double major in interior design though….
Cheers! :)
This actually cured my depression!
for sure agree with number 8!! i’m able to watch a surprisingly amount of tv shows, youtube videos etc.
throughout my studies of architecture I went through a lot of very low downs and high ups. Now I am close to graduate and I am soooo proud of my self I never gave up 😂
It takes a lot of perseverance and dedication to keep up with architecture! Congratulations on being so close to finishing your architecture degree(:
This just makes me more excited to study architecture (but I’ll go more into interior design tho)
Yay!!!!!!!! 👏
@@UnravelingArchitecture :)
can I ask? Why Interior Design?
@@keishiekim6111 when i was younger there was this show where this team would always help families whose house is in bad condition so they redesigned it and i thought that was really cool but also its the only career that my parents accept me to do from the other ones i was gonna go with hehe
@@darling.mp4 Thank you for answering😊 I’m thinking of taking Interior Design if I ever couldn’t take my dream course
Thank you very much for your guidance!
Super insightful!! Thanks, Architecture is definitely something I’ve wanted to do, for some time now it’s really something I want to pursue. It’s seemed very intimidating coming fresh out of high school but I would really love to give a go and fuel my passion for creating and building.😊
I’ve been a truck driver for 6 years. I’m 28 now. And will be going to college for architecture. Absolutely can’t wait.
you'll LOVE it!!!!!!!! best of luck!!!
I'm an architecture student here in Brasil!!! I loved your video! Here everything you said are the same LOL
Awesome! Thank you!(: Good luck studying this semester!
oh my god.Can you please help me???? your answer can change my entire life.
i am 19 and i kind of feel i born being architect. i dont want to say that i am special or very into it but..
since i was teen i saw some dreams when i was sleep like 5 times a year. it has been few years. this year i suddenly realized that. i have no idea how can i describe how crazy these places are and i do remember them. god i dont know how can tell what i mean while i cant understand why is this happen for me. i am not good at drawing or numbers at all just creativity. but there is sth, i am not just intrested in that area. i love observing new things and the world around me. cause of all these things i planned to study biotech which is wonderful and then learn architecting and use nature, creativity, technology and biology to create a very new aspect while i am not really limited in only one specific job.
how do you think? by the way i am not from a expansive country so things and the process of making things happen are so hard even for leaving the country.
i have about 2 dreams and they came to my mind without invitation. i dont know if my desires are true or not but they all what i have. and if i see them while others not then i should do them and that would be right. right now i am studying to enter my university
thanks for this video! You balanced positive and negative aspects really nicely and it feels like you give a very realistic impression of what it's like to study architecture :)
You're so welcome!(:
This is great I’m going to Kent for architecture they go to Florence for study abroad not sure what my parents will think when I tell them I have to go Butt super psyched an happy to be apart of the archi squad
