  • A short film about being an architect and my struggle to pursue a more creative life. This story is your story too because these are challenges we all face. How do we make the most of our short time here? How do we ensure we’re doing the work that makes us most happy? How do we reconcile our need to feel necessary, useful, and creative with the financial reality of making a life, supporting ourselves and our families?
Four years ago, I made the decision to part ways with the traditional practice of architecture in search of something more rewarding. I left behind a salary and good friends. I left a job that supported my family but left me creatively unfulfilled. Without a long client list or a rolodex full of contacts, and no familial connections to funnel work my way I began experimenting. I did anything and everything I could to feed my creative intellect.
I made things, each and every day. Most of what I made failed, but I took note of the ones that didn't and learned from them. I persisted and kept making. I continued to reevaluate what being an architect might look like; what it meant to me.
I found the traditional definition of practice stifling. I wasn’t content doing only one thing. Of course, I loved architecture deeply, but I also wanted to pursue writing and photography, video editing and sketching, model making and paper cutting, book publishing, marketing and interior design.
As my definition of what being an architect meant expanded to include all these things I discovered this deep well of creative freedom that traditional practice - for me - had been lacking.
Is my path the right one for everyone? Of course not. Is this expanded definition of a creative life perfect or unfailing? Hardly. But, experimenting has brought me closer than ever to my childhood vision of what a fulfilling life might look like.
Each day is a new experiment in making. And this short film? That's an experiment too. I made it with you in mind. To empower you to go find the things that make you feel most alive, most fulfilled, the things that bring you happiness.
This channel is possible because of you - my friends and viewers. I hope you’ll share your story in the comments below and together we can broaden the definition of what it means to live a fulfilling, creative life.

I’m 19 now and once I was a kid I was inspired to build and know more, I used to work at making custom cabinets, installing floors, installing basically anything for interior when I was 15 and every time I went to a clients house it tells a story and each time I see a structure of their homes it brings out like a vibe and I want to do something like that one day to design and build at the same time. So basically I’m trying to say it’s always good to see beyond your potential on what ever you’re interested at

First time ever commenting on RUclips. I'm 6 years into my career as a structural engineer in bridge design. I've been on stress leave for 10 months now due to severe burnout. Over that time, the burnout has turned into depression. Both of these mental states I've never struggled with before. I've been searching for the changes I need to make to be happy. It's not a small task, and I find myself losing motivation too often. I cannot thank you enough for creating this video. The way you tell your story gives me so much hope and inspiration and it put a rare smile only face! I'm positive things will turn around. Cheers from Canada!

This was well needed an inspirational. For a while now I have been thinking about giving up my architecture dreams for something safer and more mundane due to me being able to afford architecture school. However this video took me back, to when I was a kid, building cardboard houses for my toys, building my own towns and cities out of sand, roads to point A and point B. The very thing that I was doing since I was a child, is now giving me a new sense of inspiration towards the future. I'm 21 at the time of this comment, hopefully I will find a way and make it worth, tired of the norm and mundane, I want the exceptional and excitement in my career and my life

This is what scares me the most. Dedicating my WHOLE life to the career.
Don't misunderstand me, all about this video is so inspiring. But how everything is meticulously calculated, your mornings, your "free" hours, where you're still thinking about architecture, your afternoons.

Sir.. you earned my respect. I had the same feeling about facing the world after graduating college. I took Bachelor in Architectural Drafting Technology, it was great. But when I stepped in my "On Job Training" (OJT) to experience my line of work outside the school, everything that I have learned became dull on what I have expected. Most draftsmen were not following the ground basics of making models, there lots of flaws. It made me sad.
The statement you said, "Trading Time for Dollars" was a great impact.

All I can say is wow! Your message to me isn't just about architecture, It's a blueprint on how to live a fulfilling and beautiful life. I know nothing about architecture, but your passion towards how architecture shapes your way of life is mind blowing to me. I love how the things that you loved about architecture as a child eventually and naturally brought back your love and reminded you about why you wanted to be an architect in the first place. Through all of that your branches of creativity morphed into all your avenues of creativity which you have today. What brought me to your channel was your episode on updating your workspace home office. That episode was amazing. It left me wanting a space just like that for myself. The freedom to create is such an amazing thing.
I can't believe that I can actually geek out at watching your drawings and finding such beauty in them knowing I know nothing about architecture. It's funny I do write documentation from time to time to explain code and functions that I write. I will admit that your approach to story telling has not only inspired me, but have now influenced me in a few different ways.
Keep the videos coming. They are fantastic ways to be influenced as well as encouraged to create.

    Eric, thank you.
What else can I say? With yet another client who had cited his reasons for not being able to pay my fees after I'd done what was needed, I had started off questioning the future of my career as an independent architect.
Your video made me think and I write this comment after some good, hard looking into what I could do to make a change. That's all I know for now, but surely you've inspired me to not give up.

A Sneaker And a Dream I wanted to be an architect since I was 11 not because of LEGO or kids show is because of minecraft because the limitless ideas and creativity you can do in the game although you can do like thin walls or anything but I saw the game as a way to set off my future and currently I’m using rebut city to design things although I’m only in grade 10 I’m curious what it will be like to advanced into this more because I have a lot of ideas

Recently built a computer, went onto RUclips, hit play on one of keralis’ old videos and started building in Flows hd with Sliders Vibrant Shaders. Couldn’t be happier

Just wanted to thank you for sharing all your experiences as they have really moved me to reassess my working environment and business as a whole.
I am residential building designer with great cad skills who learned my skillset working for old school on the board architects. They hired me as they wanted to migrate to the digital age. Ironically, I started my career as a structural designer and sidelined the architectural design to put my kids through college. So, for 25 years now and close to retirement I still have the urge to design - I guess it's typical for anyone who enjoys design to be wired that way.

I wanted to leave one more comment in addition to the one from 6 years and 1 year ago.
This video legitimately changed my life and still inspires me immensely to this day, and though I have chosen a different career path now that isn't architecture, this video led me to where I am today and I'm very thankful for that. I now want to have my own business, in what I'm not sure yet, and go further into academia to possibly and hopefully become a professor in history / classics, where I can explore the history of ancient Roman architecture in various climates, my love for architecture has certainly stayed, and I'm glad that I will still be able to study it for my later studies. I'm also now getting engaged this summer, when I mean this video sent me down a different path in life I mean it, I don't think I would be exactly where I am right now without it, so thank you Eric for this video, and for inspiring me and others.
    Cheers from Canada!!

This is, I believe, the very healthy and the only right approach to work through your life as an architect. Instead of focusing on profit only, having the possibility to choose the project we know will make us grow during the designing process, the comfort of being able to organize our work routine in a way that suits us and bring best results, the freedom to work so close to home, without loosing touch with the loved ones, keeping space for all other passions and incorporating them into our work.. This is what i'd call a real success not only in architect's life, but every person's life. I hope one day all architects could arrive to this stage in their careers and I wish this to all :) Great video, very inspiring, motivating and heartwarming even. Well done!

I'm in grade 11 and in less than 2 years from now, I'll be in college with the course that I want to take. And that is Architecture. Ever since I was little, it has been my dream already. 3 days ago, I decided to do a detox from all my social media accounts because it has already been taking more than 50% of my time everyday. I wanted to be back on track, i want the old me (who was determined to achieve my dreams) be back again. I was unmotivated throughout my high school years and I forgot what I really wanted to become. For the past 3 days, a lot has happened to my life and it started to inspire me again. Life has brought back my passion.
Today, I was researching about architecture and it led me to this video. Thank you for this. I am now more inspired. I really can't express how thankful I am for this video but one day you'll see me commenting in your videos again thanking you because I am already an architect.

This brought a bit of a tear to my eye.
I'm in the middle of a career switch. I had trained to be a data analyst and software developer, only to get three years into the field and realize I wasn't passionate about it.
I've spent the last few months reconnecting with my creative side. Sketching logos, imagining cities and designing room layouts. I've loved the opportunity to embrace this side of my personality but I worry about being "directionless" for not picking one sole path.
It's very refreshing to see that there are other people who embrace creativity and the design process as whole philosophies rather than umbrella terms for fields of work.
Best of luck on all of your projects!

I watched the video through, went to subscribe and realized I already had. I get such a nice feeling when I see videos like this that reconfirm to me that I've finally found what I need and want my career to be. I used to make little models of homes myself as a kid and still sketch and create ideas that I hope will come to life one day soon. I absolutely love building stuff and being creative yet practical with little supplies/money, I've always contributed that into my life in all aspects. I didn't know I wanted to be an architect through highschool and a year or so after school, so I am grateful for that "lost" feeling that made me decide not to go to college right out of school, because I would be in debt for a career path that I didn't really want. It took me a while to discover I was meant to be an architect, I can't wait to get started on it all. Thank you for your quality content! 👌

Since as long as I can remember, building things with wooden blocks and leggos just like you mentioned was something I surprisingly did too. Constructing things to make them functional was always a habit I had in creative settings. I just started design studios in college just this year, and it has been such a journey in a few short months. Nature is our Inner Strength... and that shot of yours sitting on the edge of that endless lake gave me goosebumps... as an Architect I think it is important to live the life of a recluse ... beyond work in this busy life, it is extremely important to waste time just not doing anything, but sitting blank, in a silent conversation with Nature, waiting for that invisible energy to flow into you from the surrounding environment and do its wonders... that's when a Design is born.

Work is tied to so many things related to labor, no self-will, punching the clock, and to make something “legitimate”. Unfortunately, it took many years to realize this. Better late than never. I feel so happy to find a courge to keep going after my dream
