Bjarke Ingels: Architecture should be more like Minecraft

- In this movie Bjarke Ingels, founder of architecture firm BIG, explains his theory of "Worldcraft" - creating architecture that focuses on turning "surreal dreams into inhabitable space".
Those are some clean clean shoes u got there boss.
Yankee Doodle fine boyos
That's so true! :)
He did not just draw Doofenschmirtz 😂
Denmark 👐
Weird flex (to say you work at BIG) but okay
man these ideas would get shit on by my studio professor lmao.
Waifus n' Syrup lol same 😂
Fun fact though, they have all been build in Copenhagen
I had the same thing in mind.
And I really like several of the designs but yes, all designs are subjective.
i feel yah
*says mine craft once in the video*
"Architecture is minecraft"
You didn´t get it right? lol
Twice, actually...
But he in turn said se can literally marry ideas, so...
minecraft is crafting dream worlds and inhabiting them through play, architecture for him is the same but in the real world. The example he uses was the powerplant+ski run marriage of ideas. i think its a very strong link.
@@fahimijimihe is shitting
Architects draws.... Engineers cries.... :P
+Rudus Cris crying from joy.
Believe me, we Architects cry a lot before finishing our drawings.
nah cus engineers can't draw, otherwise they'd be architects :P
then they should work together from the beginning
Mau Lop We learned to innovate there needs to be no limit in ideation. I feel like this is what could happen quickly if you add someone focused on realisation.
describing lego mini figures as "the largest ethnic group in the world" has me reeling. i don't know what to do with this information
I guess when he said 3 billion, that means half of the world have creative imagination. The info is amazing.
When I was a child, I had all of these dreams and ideas that I wanted to create, but I thought there was nobody that actually did these kinds of things. in this world we are so skeptical about if something can be or not be done that we don't even take the chance of failure and don' try to reach your dreams. Videos like this are creating a much better environment for the world, where we go out to create our own dreams.
This is why I want to be an architect.
All the best to you! Follow us for some help.
Don't stop dreaming, we need big imaginations in Architecture! It's sad to see people get lazy and just accept design rules instead of questioning and reexamining them
Greyso, STOP letting abstract and fictional ideas stop you. You think it, you put it on paper, put it in digital form and keep looking on ways on how to make it actual. When you finish, you go show some Architects or create an exhibition like an Artist. JUST DO IT!
What architecture are you into? If modern then disgusting and not interested in you.
Don´t know where you at but hope you are making your dreams come true. Stay safe.
2 words. Client budget.
He is famous for his low budget stuff, most of the residential project he did cost less than avarage that's why the investors choose him
Ah, I see you are a Kanye West fan.
Was thinking about this
As a Architecture student you should design within restraints and no restraints.
How to turn dreams into reality - find some incredibly good engineers :D
To be fair, a lot of really good engineers are pants at thinking up dream-like ideas to then impliment.
Earthenfist Yet almost all the revolutionary structures, ideas and inventions have been created by engineers, or designers with a focus on understanding engineering. Any kid can dream, but it takes the best engineers to turn dreams into reality.
and VERY RICH, EDUCATED, AND UNDERSTANDING CLIENTS XD
engineers = umpa lumpas
Good and open-minded ingineers
This is why Ingels' buildings are so much more interesting than some other starchitects. He is looking to science and urbanism and human desire for design inspiration and not just expressing a personal ego-driven architecture brand.
Lol you couldnt be more wrong really.
@@coolewurst-hc1rd explain
@@architecturecodex9818 bjarke is very much pursuing an ego-driven architecture brand. his brand is an architecture derived from simplistic pictograms. the built works are low quality, badly detailed, some floor plans are just plain bad. it doesnt really matter, as the long shot pictures that resemble the pictos are everything that matters for big. he is by far not the only one guilty of having an architecture brand, but he stands out in producing architecture that is easy enough to understand in one image, usability and spacial quality are much less of a concern.
visit 8house, visit the lokschuppen in basel if you can, find out how nice it is irl. i used to be a fan of course as well.
I started playing Minecraft in 2010 on architecture servers, today in 2020 I’m a junior working for his degree in Architecture and Architectural Engineering at CU, thank you Minecraft 👍🏼
Perhaps when the rest of the world finally catches up to the quality of life of Northern Europe, there will be jobs for this kind of architect again. In the meanwhile, we're gonna be building a whole lot more boxes.
James Moffet agree 😢
yup
Northern Europe is not needed for quality or architecture. You are forgetting American architecture (namely, Usonia, and the Prairie School), Japanese and Chinese architecture, and more. Of course, Canada, America, and Australia are some of the best places in the world for quality of life and have some of the greatest architecture. But, you are fairly correct.
Warhammer Workshop what is for you definition of quality life?! Not world of elites, but majorities.
Is "America" one of the best places for quality of life? Ex Dee
I’ve been playing Minecraft since I was 10, and still do to this day at 18 years old. I’ve spend these past years making multiple cities and experimenting with the craziest building and urban planning designs. My biggest project yet it a world I have been working on for 5 years now. It covers a little over 1 million square blocks, and is a world where I experiment with building designs and the layouts of neighbourhoods (parks, highways, building zoning, public transit,…). I believe that this game has extreme potential to influence design in the future. I actually want to become an architect because of this game.
NO FUCKING WAY I FOUND U IN THIS COMMENJT SECTION
this is so motivating... one instatnly becomes happier
I study Architecture and am not far from getting my Licence in the next few years. As a kid I was obsessed with Minecraft. Apart from designing on paper and MS Paint back then, Minecraft served as a CAD any kid could use to unlock their creative mind.
this man sounds exactly like Arnold Schwarzenegger
Fantastic video, Ingles has amazing command over his ability to articulate complex design ideas verbally and visually
I admire him too because of his ability to express the things he's seeing in his head and put them into words and into architecture. It's just so inspiring
"Awww man, now I can put Minecraft in the title"

I don't believe in this guy's theory or vision for architecture because architects can dream as much as they like and create these fabulous creations only for the client and local councils to bring them back to reality and strip the soul out of these designs. The reason why we have boring buildings everywhere is that we have uncreative people (clients, councils, codes) telling creative people (architects) what to do and how to do it to a certain extent. I'm a practicing architect in Sydney Australia and every time I try and push the boundaries with my residential designs, clients often don't see it as I do because they've looked at a display home and can't think outside the box and then if the proposal does make it past the clients, the councils give you hell over approving your design but would much rather approve a boring design that is like every second home. This is the biggest frustration of being an architect hence why I think this guy's theory does not work.
every architect is gonna go play minecraft after this...
I played MC then became an architect student.
The power of fiction is true.
I played with Legos and became an architect :D
Guys I like minecraft, the sims and lego a lot, and I'm considering studying architecture x)
I probably won't tho, I'm leaning more towards engeneering or arts
I used to play sims all the time and now I'm studying architecture. Almost everyone used to play sims too.
Building today are "Boring and Boxy"... Wants the real world to be more like Minecraft... Hmm mixed messages here.
But minecraft isn't boring
TheBaldr a block on its own is boring, thats why we play with them and make them into interesting compositions. No mixed messages at all...
As an architect, I agree with everything that was said. Speaking of Minecraft, I would add, that we should have more modular solutions (we partially have it wit BIM), concepts that can be merged (similar to what was explained in the video) but also replicated, scaled and spread more easy, so that - for example - every city has a power plant that does something awesome/unique.

I actually like modern architecture. It is simple. It may be boring but knowing basic color theory can turn a home to pleasing atmosphere. Technically minimalism at its finest. Less stuff = more space= less stress

Is sims acceptable?
Cool and all, but these buildings look ugly af. And not only because of his sketching.
When I was little, I made all these drawings about all these houses, I would look out the window and look at all the buildings I saw, I went to open houses with my mom, I built many buildings on Minecraft and Bloxburg, I started to realize that there is a possibility that buildings can reflect art and new worlds, instead of just familiar day to day life and blandness. The fact that I have a chance to create those new forms of art, and to create new worlds within buildings so unique that you question if this is real life, this makes me excited to be an architect.
My dream of being an arxhitect came to be because of minecraft
same, and thats why i respect minecraft so much
sims 3 for me, but minecraft was an obsession of mine for many years!

"hey gen z's, wanna be architects?"
i'm borderline gen z (1998), and a final year architecture student lmao. i loved minecraft as akid (so glad it's popular again!)
Architecture is trash today. Saddest time for architecture.
Sentimental background music always makes the speaker seem so full of himself... I mean he could also sit next to a chimney with a glass of cognac, it's as pretentious as that.
i disagree, it seems more playful than sentimental, complimenting the idea of a child's game in reality.
Angie Monge Still pretentious, the world is not as simple as shown here. About 80% of all videos on design are in the same style. Long camera takes, sentimental music, minimalist optic. Instead of just delivering their message, they always have to bloat things up to a new age kind of thing, which is a bit annoying
+DallasGreen123 I have to agree, this is one of the things I don't like about architecture videos. There seems to be a lack of "raw" fun and creativity.
DallasGreen123 . I agree. The 'spicing' and warping of reality is really frustrating. It can come across as condescending to people that are actually interested in the the content. (My opinion, the intention may be very different).
Really great concepts and it would be awesome to have the privilege of experiencing that architecture in Denmark.
I wonder if his geography has an effect on his ability to think as he does. Im not being judgmental but the architects in the U.S. who are in his range haven't become as popular- to me.
That's why I wanna be an architect
SB7989 yeah! this point of view makes architecture look like magic. I love it
Go for it!
Architecture is not a mere profession. It is a way of thinking and a way of life.
Maybe, it's true though.
How is it a way of life? lol
I still see those as annoying in comparison with the old architecture...
I mean it's no sagrada familia but, it's better than the current style and this design allows for creativity and is possible to evolve it further to be one with nature again
Just a bunch of empty words
Yeah
But this stuff costs money. Lots of it
+Kes Cholo And money is right there, at my reach, and yours. To think "realistically" is what's killing architecture. Which is what the entire video is about.
Not having a proper plan which takes into account not only living but also outdoor and environmental situations is actually more expensive down the road...
Architecture, like a lot of things, is about efficiency and generating value, not cost.
His company is actually known for building cheap.
His way of building is in fact low cost. His firm, BIG usually design cheaper.
Hello! 🙋♀️ Bjarke, I love you young man. When Can I live one of those Lego community in suburban of US? I need a small independent house living but connected with others for active retirees. Why not build house 6D instead of 4D just like Bee house? It’ll give more light and space in my opinion.🤷♀️ You’re so talented and you have a beautiful mind! Thank you! God bless!♥️🙏.
His comment about the fantastical building style of the past is totally wrong. Castles were extremely purpose built and held function far above form, in fact it's kind of amazing that he doesn't know this, being an architect and all. The reason they look strange today is because they had design goals and technological limitations totally alien to what we have today. Well, that and the misconstruction of history that this guy is so willing to participate in.
Also there is literally nothing wrong with traditional building, reevaluate your priorities and spend your career working on things that will actually make a difference before making a video like this
And that's the reason why architects never built cities. The form vs function thing got bigger.
I just really want to see his design process
And this guy is so young!
Cool video, thanks. Great storyteller and idea shaper. Shame the smoke rings thing never worked.
Great video. But... "Bigamy?"
Cue Dr. Evil saying, "I call it: 'Preparation H.' What? Why does everyone laugh when I say that?"
Architects are huminty's greatest and most underrated artists since we live in their artistic expressions
Thank you :) I'll keep trying my best to impact humanity for the better
Did anyone else smell the marker
Why must we shy away from older forms of architecture though? Not all ideas are good ones, the public doesn't like the surreal dreams of the modern architect. Modern architecture creates a sense of discomfort rather than a sense of community. The best designed cities bring communities together, they are uniform but have enough variety to make them beautiful. Florence, Milan, Paris etc are beautiful cities because of this very principle, they weren't designed by architects with meaningless ideas, they have stories that represent their people. The architects back then were the people, these days they are trying to be above the people, they believe in destroying tradition to make way for their idea of a perfect uniform world. No amount of fancy speeches can make an ugly design a beautiful one, they just can't.
I used to think I needed to come up with my own style, I used to think like the modern architect. My minecraft builds were ugly and random, they had no purpose, they were just meaningless shapes that pretended to be aesthetically pleasing. Too much freedom can be damaging to a person and society as a whole, we must embrace tradition and respect the hundreds of years of development of traditional architecture instead of throwing it away. Our ancestors weren't dummies, they understood the objective concept of beauty instead of trying to make anything and put a bunch of fancy labels all over it. I hope we can eventually put a stop to the destruction of old and realize our mistakes before it's too late.
"not all ideas are good ones"
You said the reason we potentially shy away from older forms of architecture sometimes. older architecture has its flaws and issues with it that fundamentally undermine how we live in a modern society.
we have taken ideas from the past that have work and we are now trying to build up on those ideas of modern ideas.
Not all of those ideas will be the most effective but it's part of the iterative process of creating a better design language and architectural approach
if you say Minecraft you have my attention
I imagine a future where AI becomes powerful enough to do most of the heavy lifting in architecture design, letting amateur creators make buildings in a similar way to how they would create in a game like Minecraft or Besiege (albeit a bit more advanced, think Shenzhen I/O in terms of level of intellectual commitment rather than Minecraft). The AI would set up rules that adhere to reality, and it would notice weak points and suggest various fixes, suggest solutions for plumbing and heating, and almost everything else that today needs to be carefully planned by a human with a thorough education in architecture design. Through advanced AI we could essentially gamify the process of designing a real, functional building. We could even take it a step further and use the technology for city planning with realistic simulations of traffic flow, economic and ecological impact etc.
If we make the creation of solutions to our problems more accessible, we get so many more possible amazing, creative solutions. And with a wider set of solutions, it should become so much easier to discover the best possible ones, especially if you can keep metrics on things like cost, environmental impact, estimated build time etc.
You could even let people work on each others designs, letting the community improve them little by little as a collective effort to improve efficiency, functionality. aesthetics and so on.
I sincerely believe (and hope) that this is what the future holds.
yes but there're still no free real estate
Totally correct! Now we just have to be willing to spend the money...
Great design often cost about the same as bad designs... and thats not considering the impact bad designs can have on human well-being and the environment. Good designers take budget, occupant well-being, the environment, and many other relevant elements into consideration in order to reach a holistic solution.
