When I was a child, I had all of these dreams and ideas that I wanted to create, but I thought there was nobody that actually did these kinds of things. in this world we are so skeptical about if something can be or not be done that we don't even take the chance of failure and don' try to reach your dreams. Videos like this are creating a much better environment for the world, where we go out to create our own dreams. This is why I want to be an architect.
Don't stop dreaming, we need big imaginations in Architecture! It's sad to see people get lazy and just accept design rules instead of questioning and reexamining them
Greyso, STOP letting abstract and fictional ideas stop you. You think it, you put it on paper, put it in digital form and keep looking on ways on how to make it actual. When you finish, you go show some Architects or create an exhibition like an Artist. JUST DO IT!
I started playing Minecraft in 2010 on architecture servers, today in 2020 I’m a junior working for his degree in Architecture and Architectural Engineering at CU, thank you Minecraft 👍🏼
When I was little, I made all these drawings about all these houses, I would look out the window and look at all the buildings I saw, I went to open houses with my mom, I built many buildings on Minecraft and Bloxburg, I started to realize that there is a possibility that buildings can reflect art and new worlds, instead of just familiar day to day life and blandness. The fact that I have a chance to create those new forms of art, and to create new worlds within buildings so unique that you question if this is real life, this makes me excited to be an architect.
I’ve been playing Minecraft since I was 10, and still do to this day at 18 years old. I’ve spend these past years making multiple cities and experimenting with the craziest building and urban planning designs. My biggest project yet it a world I have been working on for 5 years now. It covers a little over 1 million square blocks, and is a world where I experiment with building designs and the layouts of neighbourhoods (parks, highways, building zoning, public transit,…). I believe that this game has extreme potential to influence design in the future. I actually want to become an architect because of this game.
minecraft is crafting dream worlds and inhabiting them through play, architecture for him is the same but in the real world. The example he uses was the powerplant+ski run marriage of ideas. i think its a very strong link.
I study Architecture and am not far from getting my Licence in the next few years. As a kid I was obsessed with Minecraft. Apart from designing on paper and MS Paint back then, Minecraft served as a CAD any kid could use to unlock their creative mind.

As an architect, I agree with everything that was said. Speaking of Minecraft, I would add, that we should have more modular solutions (we partially have it wit BIM), concepts that can be merged (similar to what was explained in the video) but also replicated, scaled and spread more easy, so that - for example - every city has a power plant that does something awesome/unique.

Perhaps when the rest of the world finally catches up to the quality of life of Northern Europe, there will be jobs for this kind of architect again. In the meanwhile, we're gonna be building a whole lot more boxes.

I imagine a future where AI becomes powerful enough to do most of the heavy lifting in architecture design, letting amateur creators make buildings in a similar way to how they would create in a game like Minecraft or Besiege (albeit a bit more advanced, think Shenzhen I/O in terms of level of intellectual commitment rather than Minecraft). The AI would set up rules that adhere to reality, and it would notice weak points and suggest various fixes, suggest solutions for plumbing and heating, and almost everything else that today needs to be carefully planned by a human with a thorough education in architecture design. Through advanced AI we could essentially gamify the process of designing a real, functional building. We could even take it a step further and use the technology for city planning with realistic simulations of traffic flow, economic and ecological impact etc. If we make the creation of solutions to our problems more accessible, we get so many more possible amazing, creative solutions. And with a wider set of solutions, it should become so much easier to discover the best possible ones, especially if you can keep metrics on things like cost, environmental impact, estimated build time etc. You could even let people work on each others designs, letting the community improve them little by little as a collective effort to improve efficiency, functionality. aesthetics and so on. I don't believe in this guy's theory or vision for architecture because architects can dream as much as they like and create these fabulous creations only for the client and local councils to bring them back to reality and strip the soul out of these designs. The reason why we have boring buildings everywhere is that we have uncreative people (clients, councils, codes) telling creative people (architects) what to do and how to do it to a certain extent. I'm a practicing architect in Sydney Australia and every time I try and push the boundaries with my residential designs, clients often don't see it as I do because they've looked at a display home and can't think outside the box and then if the proposal does make it past the clients, the councils give you hell over approving your design but would much rather approve a boring design that is like every second home. This is the biggest frustration of being an architect hence why I think this guy's theory does not work.

+DallasGreen123 I have to agree, this is one of the things I don't like about architecture videos. There seems to be a lack of "raw" fun and creativity.
DallasGreen123 . I agree. The 'spicing' and warping of reality is really frustrating. It can come across as condescending to people that are actually interested in the the content. His comment about the fantastical building style of the past is totally wrong. Castles were extremely purpose built and held function far above form, in fact it's kind of amazing that he doesn't know this, being an architect and all. The reason they look strange today is because they had design goals and technological limitations totally alien to what we have today. Well, that and the misconstruction of history that this guy is so willing to participate in. Also there is literally nothing wrong with traditional building, reevaluate your priorities and spend your career working on things that will actually make a difference before making a video like this

Why must we shy away from older forms of architecture though? Not all ideas are good ones, the public doesn't like the surreal dreams of the modern architect. Modern architecture creates a sense of discomfort rather than a sense of community. The best designed cities bring communities together, they are uniform but have enough variety to make them beautiful. Florence, Milan, Paris etc are beautiful cities because of this very principle, they weren't designed by architects with meaningless ideas, they have stories that represent their people. The architects back then were the people, these days they are trying to be above the people, they believe in destroying tradition to make way for their idea of a perfect uniform world. No amount of fancy speeches can make an ugly design a beautiful one, they just can't. I used to think I needed to come up with my own style, I used to think like the modern architect. My minecraft builds were ugly and random, they had no purpose, they were just meaningless shapes that pretended to be aesthetically pleasing. Too much freedom can be damaging to a person and society as a whole, we must embrace tradition and respect the hundreds of years of development of traditional architecture instead of throwing it away. Our ancestors weren't dummies, they understood the objective concept of beauty instead of trying to make anything and put a bunch of fancy labels all over it. I hope we can eventually put a stop to the destruction of old and realize our mistakes before it's too late.
"not all ideas are good ones" You said the reason we potentially shy away from older forms of architecture sometimes. older architecture has its flaws and issues with it that fundamentally undermine how we live in a modern society. we have taken ideas from the past that have work and we are now trying to build up on those ideas of modern ideas. Not all of those ideas will be the most effective but it's part of the iterative process of creating a better design language and architectural approach
You can diss the game all you want, but it's ability to create is the only reason i play it at 17 and it's the only reason I'm taking architecture at University next year.
When I was a child, I had all of these dreams and ideas that I wanted to create, but I thought there was nobody that actually did these kinds of things. in this world we are so skeptical about if something can be or not be done that we don't even take the chance of failure and don' try to reach your dreams.
"not all ideas are good ones"
You said the reason we potentially shy away from older forms of architecture sometimes. older architecture has its flaws and issues with it that fundamentally undermine how we live in a modern society.
we have taken ideas from the past that have work and we are now trying to build up on those ideas of modern ideas.
Not all of those ideas will be the most effective but it's part of the iterative process of creating a better design language and architectural approach
What did you do with Bjarkes drawing? Can you get it/buy it? :)
I wasn’t so inspired in a long time

The CLIENT make the ARCHITECT.
You can diss the game all you want, but it's ability to create is the only reason i play it at 17 and it's the only reason I'm taking architecture at University next year.
As an architect, I think this is great. We need more like him. Architecture is Worldcrafting.
So inspiring :,)
