- Red reads his own poem about being a grandparent (his daughter Valentina had presented him with a granddaughter some three months before this program aired on October 12, 1970). This is from Season 20 Episode 5. Full text below.
I fell in love with this poem and could not find it either in text or video form anywhere on the Internet. I saw lots of people asking where they could find it with no answers. Please enjoy. We all miss you Red.

Grandfather, Grandmother
A gentle title that builds an imaginary wall around the harshness of two words; old age
The enemy of youth, for we have learned that age is cruel
Yet regardless to how young you are, how young you think you are, or try to be
Age steps in, unannounced, introduced by your closest friends sometimes by saying "Remember when?"
It's then that we hope that we'll have some brilliance that will blind the observer,
Or cast a shadow over our actions and keep them in the semi-darkness,
And we close our ears,
So we will not hear the sounds made by progress that knows no sentiment
Or to hear the song that is sung by youth called senility
Grandmother, grandfather
A noble symbol of age
A real elegance that's filled with proud moments
A chance to relive your childhood
Through the eyes of your children's children
Grandfather, grandmother
A privilege granted by God
To teach the little newcomer the shortcuts
And the ways to face the angry sorrowful old world
A chance to teach independence and respect without the aid of groups or causes
A chance to show how to build and not to destroy
A chance to see the innocence of life again
To let our minds romp freely
And not notice the hypocrisy or the puritanical taboos
That this little fellow doesn't know yet
A chance to teach and recapture wasted, unimportant seconds of our childhood
To explain youth to that always ambitious youth
That sometimes forgets to realize the importance of childhood
They're always pretending that they're a little older than their bodies or their reasons
And intelligent just enough to be well misinformed
Ignorant to discipline which teach the true essence of freedom
To teach them to grow into their wisdom far beyond their years
Grandfather, Grandmother
A blessed honor
A chance to daydream and to notice a bird in flight
And think of an answer, for it'll be the first time you've ever been asked why
And to touch a puppy dog, and not notice it messing up the place
To see for the first time a blade of grass take on the designs of a cathedral
A chance to see spring in the twilight of our autumn years
Grandmother, Grandfather
What a new dignity for now you see love
And you feel respect
For now you walk holding two hands
One the hand of tomorrow
The other the hand of eternity
Love this man. So naturally funny and Could laugh at himself. What A character what a clown. Remember watching him every night when he was on TV. When TV was actually entertaining. Always ending with may God bless. Respect, well, deserved.
I remember as a little kid, how we would watch the Red Skelton Show Every Week. To d=bad we don't have these type of shows today.
What a lovely poem by a lovely man!
He had such a beautiful heart and his recitations were always heartfelt! Today's entertainment no way matches what we once had! His humor was also classic, funny, and clean. I miss him.
I have never heard this before. It is so true. He was a very special man. A gentleman and very gentle man. A man of God.
Amen and Amen
I would like to say that I share your feelings 100 %
I am 70 yrs old now and watched Red Skelton with my father every Tuesday night and the Rifleman either before or after Red Skeleton. It was the only night while in elementary school that I was allowed to stay up as late as I had to do I could see those two good programs. It was because of the Christian nature of Red Skeltonthat I was allowed to stay up and see and the Rifleman, a western, had lessons of god bad right and wrong add Lucas brought up Mark.
Red Skeleton did not use 4 letter expletives and ended his show with mission and - "God bless" I never forgot those shows. And watch then today, 60 plus years later on cable.
There will NEVER BE ANOTHER like this Gentleman what a Wonderful Soul❤❤
I am almost 65 years old now...a father and grandfather. I told my daughter just recently..."You know....kids born today will not graduate from high school before I die." She looked in my eyes and I could see tears forming. She said ....."I never heard it put that way Dad". Red's poem is oh so true. R.I.P
Such a great and gentle man "Good night and may GOD bless"
Red Skelton was a great man. When he died we lost a great humanitarian. I'm sure God welcomed him home and it would be nice to learn if his last words were [ as he closed every one of his shows ] "Goodbye for now and may God bless".
Loved this man. What a good decent man
During world War two he served during the day but he also entertained the men at night . Very sincerely great patriotic compassionate man .
We need more than anything else is men an woman with the wisdom of this man Red Skeleton today 2023
It is astounding at the level of wisdom possessed by this great, great man, whose memory will be with many of us till the end of our days...
When Red Skelton died we lost a great man. There will never be another great comedian and humanitarian as Red Skeleton.
I enjoyed his skit of Freddy the freeloaders and he played a bum!
I wish we could go back to those innocent days!
a true saint if ever i saw one-i loved and i miss his warmth, his humor and the love he gave for us and his God!!!
This man Red Skelton would touch my heart when I was a little boy. When he would say God bless & Good night.
Kimberly Aguirre GOD BLESS AND GOOD NIGHT. I REMEMBER THIS TO.
Thank you for doing this, he was truly a great man , he was a Mason and a Shriner .
As are some of us. :)
He was so good at making me laugh every time we saw him. When I saw this the 1st time on tv, I didn't know how true and meaningful his words. Now, being a grandfather, I couldn't describe it nearly that good.
A Man of Character...who endured much sorrow.. God Bless...🙏🙏🙏💔❤💛💙
That was awesome & so true, expecting my first grandchild in the fall ❤❤❤❤❤❤

We all will miss Red Skelton i still watch. His shows thank you Red Skelton for bringing laughter to all of us
I'm a grandfather now. Married into it actually. 59 years younger old depending on who happens to be talking to me at the time. Old enough to know better or supposed to be anyway and yet still feel pretty young and ignorant on many occasion. I know I've gained some wisdom over the years with the things that I've done but I still hope and pray I have a good many years left to do a good many more things that will hopefully leave this world just a little better than it was and I not walked this path that I am on. I pray every day for God's protection and for the protection of my loved ones and of all of his creation from the tiniest to the largest we're truly the most innocent. I thank God everyday that he has protected me and kept me from the hazards that seriously jeopardize one's life at least thus far. He is granted me patience when I should have had it from the years I have lived and forgiven me but I've had little or none that really came from moments that meant nothing in the scheme of things. I thank God that I am getting older because the alternative is something that I'm not ready to fully contemplate nor sure I will ever be even on the day when I know I'm going home to be with loved ones for eternity the most importantly to be with my Lord. This poem should make every grandparent proud and feel at least a little honor and blessed to have been allowed this great privilege.
May God bless all of you children, parents, grandparents and getting into the elder years the great-grandparents and the great great-grandparents that some are privileged to be. May you feel the Lord's face shining upon you each and every day even in the darkest of moments where your heart is breaking and you do not know how you can stand the pain. That is one Lord willing if you are young or younger than a grandparent let's say, that is a time that I hope a grandparent whether they are biological or not, can place their hand on your shoulder or put their arms around you so you can feel their wives and warm and brace taking away the pain. That is what grandparents are for for they have experienced much in love, gain and loss.
Again, may the Lord shine his face upon all of you and may you all live to be grandparents and even more and enjoy the blessing of such.
Or, as Charlie Chan put it, "Sixty summers young; sixty winters old."
What a beautiful human being this man is he mades all laugh and cry with his beautiful storys.
He will forever be in our hearts 💕 the clown who made us laugh laugh
Really sweet. God bless a wonderful kind man. Red Skelton.
God Bless him. He was truly the best of the best
Thank you So Much for sharing this! I always thought So Much of Red Skelton! It's good to find some of the things he used to say...
I love this and had not heard it before. Love Red Skeleton also.
excellent RED, as always...
he sure had the words to tell how life was.
BTW, I have not a strong faith. In fact I have serious doubts as to whether or not a divine being will be there to greet us on the other side, but it gives me hope to expect that if it is there, that I could be with Red till the end of time.
Oh, there is eternal life. We have God’s Word on it. However, it’s Heaven or Hell, so please believe the Good News - Gospel, that you are a sinner in need of forgiveness, turn from your sins and then turn to Jesus Christ as Lord. That’s the narrow and ONLY road. Read it yourself - book of John.
Sometimes hope is more important.
Its so sad to realize that broken families have been robbed of their humanity. such is Divorce.!!😪
That's all well and good as long as you can stay healthy!
My word! Who is this man I have never heard Red Skelton speak that way before. Did you hear the Pledge of Allegiance in the video before this one. My my we babyboomers need to get busy. Stop the griping or better yet put it to some positive use
I haven't seen my grand children since 2018. One I haven't even met yet. The daughter in law when she doesn't want the kids to know you. My only hope is that THIS will happen to them - the son and daughter in law.
Damn You ....RED.....I'd Follow YOU into Hell...and Back ! NO ARGUMENTS !!
best clown ever.
This makes me wonder. I am 70 now 1 grandmother passed just before I was born 😢. The other shortly after 😢. So what is a grandmother. Only I of my grandfathers was around for us kids. But sure as heck made up for the others. Can remember many a weekend sleeping over. He loved Gunsmoke and the Honeymooners. That was back in the day of black & white TV.
please stop
ha
What a lovely poem by a lovely man!
