Red Skelton Grandparents Poem
Red reads his own poem about being a grandparent (his daughter Valentina had presented him with a granddaughter some three months before this program aired on October 12, 1970). This is from Season 20 Episode 5. Full text below.
I fell in love with this poem and could not find it either in text or video form anywhere on the Internet. I saw lots of people asking where they could find it with no answers. Please enjoy. We all miss you Red.

Grandfather, Grandmother
A gentle title that builds an imaginary wall around the harshness of two words; old age
The enemy of youth, for we have learned that age is cruel

This makes me wonder. I am 70 now 1 grandmother passed just before I was born 😢. The other shortly after 😢. So what is a grandmother. Only I of my grandfathers was around for us kids. But sure as heck made up for the others. Can remember many a weekend sleeping over. He loved Gunsmoke and the Honeymooners. That was back in the day of black & white TV.

I haven't seen my grand children since 2018. One I haven't even met yet. The daughter in law when she doesn't want the kids to know you. My only hope is that THIS will happen to them - the son and daughter in law.

I'm a grandfather now. Married into it actually. 59 years younger old depending on who happens to be talking to me at the time. Old enough to know better or supposed to be anyway and yet still feel pretty young and ignorant on many occasion. I know I've gained some wisdom over the years with the things that I've done but I still hope and pray I have a good many years left to do a good many more things that will hopefully leave this world just a little better than it was and I not walked this path that I am on. I pray every day for God's protection and for the protection of my loved ones and of all of his creation from the tiniest to the largest we're truly the most innocent. I thank God everyday that he has protected me and kept me from the hazards that seriously jeopardize one's life at least thus far. He is granted me patience when I should have had it from the years I have lived and forgiven me but I've had little or none that really came from moments that meant nothing in the scheme of things. I thank God that I am getting older because the alternative is something that I'm not ready to fully contemplate nor sure I will ever be even on the day when I know I'm going home to be with loved ones for eternity the most importantly to be with my Lord. This poem should make every grandparent proud and feel at least a little honor and blessed to have been allowed this great privilege. May God bless all of you children, parents, grandparents and getting into the elder years the great-grandparents and the great great-grandparents that some are privileged to be. May you feel the Lord's face shining upon you each and every day even in the darkest of moments where your heart is breaking and you do not know how you can stand the pain. That is one Lord willing if you are young or younger than a grandparent let's say, that is a time that I hope a grandparent whether they are biological or not, can place their hand on your shoulder or put their arms around you so you can feel their wives and warm and brace taking away the pain. That is what grandparents are for for they have experienced much in love, gain and loss. Again, may the Lord shine his face upon all of you and may you all live to be grandparents and even more and enjoy the blessing of such.

I am 70 yrs old now and watched Red Skelton with my father every Tuesday night and the Rifleman either before or after Red Skeleton. It was the only night while in elementary school that I was allowed to stay up as late as I had to do I could see those two good programs. It was because of the Christian nature of Red Skeltonthat I was allowed to stay up and see and the Rifleman, a western, had lessons of god bad right and wrong add Lucas brought up Mark. Red Skeleton did not use 4 letter expletives and ended his show with mission and - "God bless" I never forgot those shows. And watch then today, 60 plus years later on cable.

BTW, I have not a strong faith. In fact I have serious doubts as to whether or not a divine being will be there to greet us on the other side, but it gives me hope to expect that if it is there, that I could be with Red till the end of time.

Oh, there is eternal life. We have God’s Word on it. However, it’s Heaven or Hell, so please believe the Good News - Gospel, that you are a sinner in need of forgiveness, turn from your sins and then turn to Jesus Christ as Lord. That’s the narrow and ONLY road. Read it yourself - book of John.

I am almost 65 years old now...a father and grandfather. I told my daughter just recently..."You know....kids born today will not graduate from high school before I die." She looked in my eyes and I could see tears forming. She said ....."I never heard it put that way Dad". Red's poem is oh so true. R.I.P

Red Skelton was a great man. When he died we lost a great humanitarian. I'm sure God welcomed him home and it would be nice to learn if his last words were [ as he closed every one of his shows ] "Goodbye for now and may God bless".
