  • Welcome to Max's Cognac Review. I am an avid cognac enthusiast and explorer. There is very little information and opinion on quality cognacs so I felt compelled to share my nose and thoughts. The goal is to help educate and assist others in making the right decisions for their palate and wallets. Please enjoy it with a wee dram!

    (I wrote this comment before watching the review):
    This stuff is very smooth and deep and full of dried fruits. I find It as good as the cordon blue (arguably maybe a tiny bit better because it has amazingly deep dried fruit flavors).
    I'd say that If you're in a mood for a well rounded, fully-complete yet "sharp" congac go with the cordon blue; If you want something with great depth and indulgent richeness (in a good way) go with the XO.
    That being said, the Cordon blue is a notch cheaper.
    Well, my two cents.

      Thanks for the kind reply,
      I owe you for getting me to try 2 of Martell's upper tier Congacs... the XO and the Cordon blue.
      I do have a somewhat random question, the question being:
      Does "caramel color" add only color, or does it also impart a "caramel flavor" to the Congac? I've been trying to find this out and strangely there just isn't much specific information like that out there (at least on the internet) about Congac/Armangac.

    • @MaxsCognacReview
      @MaxsCognacReview  5 лет назад

      My pleasure! I am happy to hear that you enjoyed them as much as I did. The addition of caramel (E-150) adds flavor as well as color. It is used heavily in younger cognacs (VS,VSOP) to mask the youth and give it that rich dark color. Unfortunately, there are no regulations/rules about using caramel. It is just as common in whiskey/scotch. Houses do not even need to notify/declare that they use E-150 on the bottle. The market has spoken and a lot of whiskeys now do have "No colorant' and "Non-chill filtered' printed clearly on their bottles. This is not very common in Cognacs but I am hoping that will change. That being said, XO's are typically very rich, smooth, and complex and do not need as much if any E-150 for flavor. An XO will have a naturally dark color from the extended contact with the barrel so there is no need to adjust the color either. A great non-filtered "pure" cognac is Daniel Bouju. I strongly recommend looking out for a bottle. Cheers!

    So I’m guessing this stuff is more sweet similar to a port? Rather than strong like a whiskey?

    • @MaxsCognacReview
      @MaxsCognacReview  4 года назад

      Hey Balcklog thanks for checking out the review! Cognac in general is soft and subtle in comparison to whiskey. The older Cognacs develop finessed perfumed notes of flower pedals, fruit, and vanilla. I’d say it is somewhere in middle between port and whiskey. Cheers 🥃

    Is the Martel Cordon Blue smoother and less alcohol taste ?

    • @AB-kf8ry
      @AB-kf8ry Год назад

      The Cordon Bleu is more of a bolder and less sweet flavour profile due to the dominant amount of Borderies eau-de-vies used in it.
      The Martell XO is sweeter. Alcohol would be around the same level.

  • @cubancigarman2687

    I finally got a bottle of martell xo yesterday and after sampling it was quite magnificent! I have 2 bottles of cordon bleu and it is quite exceptional as well. My wife prefers Hennessey xo as I do as well very much like. The cordon bleu has more blueberryish notes and is extremely complex. The xo is smoother, sweeter, and complex more so than Hennessey imo. You have to have both xo and cordon bleu on hand, the best really. I find the best traditional cognac for value is Rémy Martin 1738, then Rémy Martin Tercet, and then Centaure in that order. I got Hardy xo as well and will need to see where it belongs on my list. Rémy Martin xo is below all the mentioned cognacs here as I was expecting more for it’s price. Too bad the prices of cognacs are higher than most alcoholic spirits. It’s very hard to spend $200 on cognacs regularly. After you have XO cognacs, it’s hard to go back drinking VSOP cognacs. Along with my cigar addiction, these two items that I pleasure my passing of time with is bad for my checking account! Ce la vie!

    • @MaxsCognacReview
      @MaxsCognacReview  4 года назад

      You have great taste, my friend! I could not agree more. There is nothing better than a bottle of Cordon Blue and Martell XO to go back and forth with. Remy Martin XO is a little rough around the edges for its price point. Great eau de vie but not enough age. I just got a bottle of Remy Tercet! I am a big fan of their 1738 as well so I am expecting good things. Cognac is hands down the best Brandy money can buy but I have found some amazing Brandies from other regions that offer tremendous value. They are certainly worth checking out and throwing in the rotation. I 've been smoking my fair share of cigars lately... was considering throwing a pairing in a review. Do you have any good pairing recommendations? Cheers

    • @cubancigarman2687
      @cubancigarman2687 4 года назад

      Max's Brandy Review I try not to discourage anyone from saying that they have the best cigar to go with cognac. I went through many of cigars in the last twenty years. I must say that stronger cigars and generally darker cigars pairs better with whiskey , scotch, harder tequila. It’s been many years since I’ve come back to cognacs. And the same said about Romeo y julieta Reserva real. It’s a cigar every one can get their hands on here in the USA. I believe that cigar is the best cigar paired with any cognac or drink as a matter of fact. (6x54 toro or 6.25x52 belicoso). When the drink amplifies the cigar, then you actually have the correct pairing. I sound like a broken record when people ask about it, but I’m never wrong either. Real Cuban cigars generally will push aside expensive cognacs. I also mean not to be snobbish but, expensive cognacs are best experienced with a group of no more than 3. Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real toro...I smoked it back when I started with cigars ( ex cigarette, occasionally pipe smoker as well) and been about 15 years now that I have not smoked it in any regularity. Was not till recently That I wanted exceptional cognac that I needed a cigar that paired well. This cigar on it’s own is actually very to extremely good. Cigars will vary from stick to stick even of the same label FYI. An organic product that until tasted by the consumer. In summary...Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real toro is the best cigar pairing for any high end cognac. Don’t let the price of the cigar fool you! It was right under my nose for 15 years until I realized it. Ps.. the Reserva Real has floral notes(dominant), semi sweet, maybe vanilla, lightly-medium spiced, musk(Cuban cigars are very musky and most non Cuban has no musk), light wood n coffee, no cocoa, little-no licorice, no heavy tarry aftertastes( mostly important to cognac pairing), and a sweet ( but not like a maduro overly sweet)finish off the nose. This is what I experienced in order when I draw from this cigar.

    • @MaxsCognacReview
      @MaxsCognacReview  4 года назад +1

      Wow, it sounds like an incredible pairing! I can appreciate those tasting notes. I am looking forward to getting my hands on Julieta's. Recently I have mostly been smoking Oliva and Camacho that I will pair with whiskey. In general, I do feel that whiskeys pair better with cigars but I know there have to be some great Cognac pairings out there. I feel like the "expensive" Cogancs do not pair well because they are typically older. The juice has gotten delicate and nuanced but softer and unable to stand up to a cigar. When I do pair I prefer younger cognacs or cognacs that are cask strength and unchill filtered. I find they have enough kick and power to pair well with a cigar. Cigars are a new world for me so I truly appreciate your words of wisdom. Thank you for the recommendation!

    Martell XO vs Cordon Bleu, which do you prefer & why? Also may I recommend trying Delamain Vesper XO and Pierre Ferrand Selection Des Agnes Grand Champagne 30yr. Cheers to your continued good health sir!

    • @MaxsCognacReview
      @MaxsCognacReview  5 лет назад +3

      Hey Robert, thanks for checking out the review. It is close but I prefer Cordon Bleu. I find it to be a little smoother with more black and blue fruit notes. I will say that I find the XO is more distinct with sharper flavors. It truly boils down to the mood one is in. It is hard to say for sure but the price point puts Cordon Bleu over the edge for me. I will have to have them side by side and dig deeper. Thank you for the recommendations. I have heard many great things about Delamain and I've truly enjoyed the expressions I have been able to sample. Unfortunately it is tough to find them here in the states. Pale and Dry is more readily available. I have had a couple Pierre Ferrand bottles but the Selection Des Agnes 30 sounds like a real treat. I will certainly keep an eye out for a bottle. CHeers

      Hey Luke, thanks for checking out the review. Unfortunately Martell XO is at the top of the range. Typically around $200 but worth every penny! It is by far the best widely available XO. It is aged for up to 35 years and has the most beautiful delicate flavors and aromas you can find on a shelf near you. This is a Cognac to put on your private reserve shelf. IMHO the sport coat and no tie is "the" attire for Cognac reviews 😎 (a tie would make you look like a salesman). Brits call it "smart casual". You can actually be taken seriously without being too serious. IMHO that and some fixed spot with good lighting could mature the channel, like Ralfy had his bothy, you need some sort of constant lounge or parlor. And possibly cutting that sound bite. It alienates anyone who is not into that style. IMHO.

      Max, it's your channel and your choice. But FWIW I meant no sound bite at all. That would be safe. Or something without vocals and very backgroundish and short, right as you start speaking. The thing is, even if the song is great, for us viewers it gets very old quickly. I end up skipping every time. Then what's the point? Just thinking out loud :-)
