    Thanks for the update video. I've watched all of your other Icon box videos, and they have been helpful for me. I ended up going with a 56" to start with, and I agree with you that you aren't getting anything extra in build quality going with a truck brand box. My coworkers with Snap-on boxes were surprised with how nice the Icon tool storage is. One person even posted their box for sale to buy the icon and put a few grand back in there pocket.
    Good content, keep at it.

I do have an older craftsman box that I bought way before Lowe’s bought craftsman which is not the same quality now. Maybe one day I will upgrade my box here at the house as I do still work on cars. I left the shop in 2018 to work for MOOG as a TPS in my market. Then Tenneco bought federal mogul but long story so 2022 I did go back and start working in a shop again for about 6 months before my car accident but I really thought if I stayed in the shop I was going to get a new box.

    As much as I like the Icon stuff, just can't justify the cost. As it is, I was able to 'convince' myself that I needed some newer USGeneral boxes. Had a 44" top and bottom, decided to add a locker, it wasn't compatible, (too wide...my OG box is OLD), so 'had' to buy a new bottom cabinet. Went with the 56", then took the 44 bottom, removed the wheels, and squeezed in under my work bench. Put the 44 top on the 56 bottom with the locker on the left. That gave me _almost_ enough room to put a small compressor on the right side, so bought a second set of drawers to put on there. Looks great, works great, I didn't spend an awful amount of money, and I expect it will outlast me. I don't make my living off my tools, so I could have gotten away with the big box store junk, but I wanted something a bit nicer. Now, if money were no object....your set up would be small compared to what I _want_. LOL LOL Thanks for the vids...

It has supports under the drawers and more beef overall. The snapon drawers glide better but their load rating is lower so that might have something to do with it.
    The icon box is phenomenal and I would buy another if I had room for it.
    Every time I go to the big box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot, I open the boxes and tap the drawers and there’s no comparison. The weight specs don’t lie either. The icon is like 2x the weight of the big boxers. I’m confident the icon drawers will resist long term sagging 10x better than the others and it’s a joy to use every time I open it up. Just under 4 years and happy with mine. Heavy daily shop use and no real issues. I twisted out the internal stop on one of my six locks. It do es180 now instead of 90 but still locks fine. Slammed a service cart into a drawer tensioner and broke the tab. My heaviest single rail drawer will brush the drawer below if they’re both open.
      I’m at $9k for 72” box,stainless top, hutch, 2 lockers, 72” top cab and 56” top cab.
      Yes it’s a lot of money for a box but it’s also a lot of box for the money.

    That box is not only awesome, but a “smart” choice. Buying an expensive toolbox doesn’t make anybody money except the people who sold it. I’ll never, NEVER understand the logic of mechanics (especially young guys) spending the price of a car on a bunch of shelves and drawers. Even the price of Snap On tools is just ridiculous - but some guys swear they “need” them. I just don’t get it.
    You may not think it, but videos like this are important to help change that mindset for the next generation. Kids get jobs changing oil and immediately get pressured and brainwashed by older guys saying “they arent real mechanics” unless they buy a Snap On box - cause thats what happened to those guys. Tech schools and Snap On prey on young kids taking out student loans in an effort to preserve that way of thinking.

    • @zenlandzipline
      @zenlandzipline Год назад

      I agree that Snap On and other tool truck boxes are out of hand expensive. But teaching the upcoming generations to buy cheap is teaching them to support China. We need to instill in the young kids that buying American is a win/win deal. When you buy American, you’re supporting American jobs and companies. And 9 times out of 10, you’re getting a much better product.
      I buy simple stuff from HF when I need it: consumables, such as sandpaper or little $20 tools that I might only use once a year. But when I’m making a major purchase on a machine or tools, welding equipment, etc, I try my best to buy American, or German or Italian or even Taiwanese made equipment. Anything is better than China.
      I realize not everybody can afford American made tools and equipment. But I believe we should teach our youth that spending more money now will save you money in the long run.
      You’re better off buying used American made equipment than buying brand new Chinese equipment.
      And, if you’re going to buy Chinese tools, better off buying them used. That way, you’re getting a cheap price, but you’re not supporting China (as much).
      Also: the resale value on Chinese toolboxes and other tools isn’t near as good, percentage wise, as American stuff.

    • @kctyphoon
      @kctyphoon Год назад

      @@zenlandzipline i agree - but charity starts at home first. I’m not gonna support someone spending (MUCH) more money just to make a point, when doing that involves putting yourself into debt or not getting extra value for the dollar you spent. Support for American jobs, American companies, and American made products needs to start in Washington DC FIRST. “If you (let them) build it, they will come”. Todays reality is a person can earn themselves and their family the same income with buying gearwrench compared to Snap On. For American companies to succeed Washington needs to make them a priority before the consumer does, and if Channellock can still make and sell American made pliers at an affordable and competitive price point, theres no reason why Snap On couldn’t either. IF they wanted to. Snap On has gotten too big for its own good, which is why their products needs to sell for 5-10x price. Theres no reason why a person should have to pay crazy margins when buying the same tool online, to support the tool trucks and warranty services that will never be made available to them. Likewise - there’s NO reason why a person should need to spend double the price on a hammer, simply because Snap On took someone else’s hammer and slapped their logo on it.

    • @zenlandzipline
      @zenlandzipline Год назад

      @@kctyphoon I agree with everything you said. Snap On is out of hand. And if they don’t correct themselves with their pricing, it’s going to hurt them bad.
      I think there is something we need to consider though: Buying Snap On or Mac or Matco is an investment. Yes, the toolbox will depreciate, but you can still put a used Snap On box up for sale and get more than half of what you paid for it, even if it’s 10-15 years old.
      So, think of it like this: you pay $10,000 for a Snap On box (I know, it’s frickin ridiculous) and you use it to make a living for 8-10 years. Then you decide to get out of the mechanic business. You can sell that box for $5000-$6000 (if you didn’t totally abuse it). So, really, you paid $5000 and had a nice box with all of the prestige and respect that comes with it, for 10 years. Even if you only get $4000 for it, it’s still not $10,000.
      FWIW, I’m not a mechanic, and I’ve never bought a Snap On box. I’m a welder. I do own a Matco rolling cart/box that I paid $150 for. Sometimes you find great deals.
      I just don’t believe the resale value on that Icon box is going to be very high, unless he sells it before it starts breaking down and getting beat up. But his box is a a home box, probably won’t get beat up like it would at a real garage.
      Either way…we should buy American whenever we can afford it. And contrary to what you said about “it all starts in DC”, I think it starts with the consumer and the overall mentality of the citizens of the country. (Yes, I know, DC has a large bearing on the psyche of the country, but we citizens can take it upon ourselves to do what is right.)

Or a landscaper with a 250k rig bring home just a little over 6 figs after taxes. What about the heavy equipment guys? Most companies just hire someone with an excavator instead of spending the 500k.
