Prosthechea cochleata, formerly known as Encyclia cochleata, Anacheilium cochleatum, and Epidendrum cochleatum and commonly referred to as the clamshell orchid[1] or cockleshell orchid
Maria, thanks so much for this information. I just bought one at an orchid sale in Jamaica but I didn't have any information on it. It is a beautiful orchid!
Thank you so much for watching and joining me on my orchid adventures! I am so glad you found one...they are awesome and unique looking orchids. ENJOY! Much love to you in Jamaica and HAPPY GROWING AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU!
Paula from Mexico. I found the garden center open today. So I bought two plants like this. They were cheaper then my friend told me. I paid 130 pesos or $6.00 USD. That is why I got two. They each had two flowers open & about 4 to 5 more buds to open. The one had a flower close to the ground & one up high in the air. The plants were very dirty. So I washed & low fertilizer feed them. I will want till spring to repot. I may use clay pot with lava rocks. Thank You again for this video.
WOW! That is an awesome and amazing deal! CONGRATULATIONS! They are really quite unique plants and is why I do love them so. I hope they continue to bloom for you and bring you lots and lots of joy! P.S. I am not sure if I would put them in lava rock though as they may dry out too quickly and produce a weak or dying plant. Of course it is your choice and that is my opinion. Whatever you decide to do, I do hope that it grows well for you. HAPPY GROWING!
MY Tropical Plant Adventures : Yes looking at your video you said bark. My house never goes over 80, at night about 63. Winter, down to 55. So my plants don’t dry out fast. Moss stays wet too long for me. Bark if I sook it stay wet too long. So I just pour water through. And do foliage feed at night every 3 days, with Cal-mag & seaweed extract, no more than 150 ppm. Lava rock in clay last about a week, for me. I don’t have the hot weather like you do. I am 5,000 ft. Above sea level.
Love this orchid, could do do a video showing the inside and more information on the column, as I am a sugarcrafter and would love to make in sugar , thank you
YAAAAAAAAY YOU!!! These are such wonderful and fun orchids. Enjoy them! Thank you for joining me on my orchid adventures and I am wishing you the absolute best in your orchid adventures!!! HAPPY GROWING! :)
@@PictureMaria1 Thank you sooo much! I do enjoy my Orchids 😉. This one looks like a hooded dragon (lizard)...lol! Cant wait to see more of your videos!
This video convinced me to add this orchid to my wishlist. Cannot say no to a sequential bloomer that looks like a little friendly squid - and from behind it looks like a little evil alien lord from outer space ;) I love the little stripes and spots on this flower.
YAAAAAAAAAY! ....and congratulations in advance....you won't be disappointed! This is such a wild and out of this world looking orchid...it indeed catches a lot of attention...I couldn't be more pleased with him! He is awesome!
Cha-cha-cha!!! LOL!!! Thank you...and it is quite a beautiful and very unique looking plant...it is definitely an eye catcher for sure! Thank you for watching and groovin' with us!! LOL! HAPPY GROWING! :)
Hi Maria, I love this orchid, Never seen it or anything like it before, It sort of reminds me of a candle in a holder with a shell draft shield, Its very unusual, And very eye catching, :-)
It does look like a candle with a shield...LOL!!!! ...and yes it is quite unique in its appearance and such an easy orchids to care for as well. It's quite an attention getter and it's beauty is found in it's uniqueness....the only orchids that I know can out do this little guy is the dendrobium spectabile...which has an insane alien like cluster of blossom that doesn't even look real...they can grow about 5-7 ft tall and weigh 20-30 lbs! ...crazy right!!! I have two spectabiles and am waiting anxiously until they bloom! ....Thank you for watching and I am hoping you get a cochleata soon! You won't regret it! :)
I use different types of fertilizer...but usually a well balanced one. I also from time to time will use fish or seed weed emulsion. Many of my orchids outside get fertilized by slow release fertilizer that is contained in a little baggie and get fertilized every time I water them.
Hello there! ...and of course you can send me pics. You can do it on my instagram under MyOrchidAdventures or you can email them to me at picturemaria@gmail.com
I also had one of those as well. It expired on me. It developed some type of fungus black spots that spread throughout the whole plant. I had to get rid of it. I didn't want it to spread throughout my healthy plants.
.....awwwwwww so sad to hear that it expired...are you sure the black spots didn't come from high humidity and poor air circulation...I know many orchids can obtain a lot of black spotting because of this, such as your oncidiums....again my condolences...Hoping one day you will open up your heart to another cochleata...they are just so much fun to have around! :)
I'm not really sure what was causing it. Even with fresh air and lower humidity the spots would go leaf to leaf. The more I cut the leaf back the spots came back.
Richard Lewis :( ...that sucks! I hate it when you have an orchid and no matter how hard to try to fight against something it still becomes a losing battle...I had a bunch of radicans of all sorts of type...but no matter what I did...I had a continuous mealy bug infestation...until they claimed many of radicans...wish I knew then what I knew now though...I would've blasted them into mealy heaven...LOL!
That is a beauticul orchid. I love watching your videos you are so dramatic :) ( I have been wanting to comment on the rest of your videos but youtube won't let me. Most videos tell me the comments are disabled. Might have to start commenting on your facebook page.)
rmcandlelight Thank you...I wasn't sure what happened to you. Glad to hear all is well and it is just youtube acting up. I have noticed that too as well...sometimes it will let me reply back and sometimes it won't...I got to check into that as well. I know sometimes when I lose signal it will not let me read any comments and I have received that same message so I'm thinking perhaps that can have something to do with it...again glad to see you! :)
HA HA HA!!! TOO FUNNY! It's amazing what are orchids can remind us of! I think that's what makes them so amazing...we all see something different. Thanks for watching! :)
