I've recently started a garden and you have single handedly made me an orchid fan. I used to think I couldnt grow an orchid till I attached my old parenial to a tree and it bloomed for me! Now I'm hooked.
I am so happy you got this orchid. Chilochista is another orchid I love, I used to have several species of them, but life got rough and sadly I lost them. In my experience this orchids are thirsty, think of Vanda thirsty, without any of the drought tolerance, will simply not thrive in the dryness. Also very sensitive to salts and fertilizers, the roots will easily burn away if not careful. For me I like to mount them in wood slabs, moss poles and moss kokedamas. I think once I have my life in track, I will try to have them again.
Yey! Miss Danny I have Chiloschista too. Lunifera variety its red flower. Was shipped to me already mounted on a piece of wood 3weeks ago with broken roots due to rough shipping. I just hang it in the window and misted 2x aday. Receives direct sunlight at 4pm onwards. She loves it, all the broken roots grew new tips🤗
Hi MOG, thanks for answering our questions about it😊, the truth is they already gain popularity here in Philippines. It really was horrible and I throw mine away, it's really useless. I use a soldering iron with a thin tip and carefully chop the plastic. It was horrible and I hope I never encounter it again 😰
That leafless orchid is so interesting! I was looking into a leafless vanilla but I could find info on whether or not you can actually get vanilla beans from it
Love your channel, you have helped me a lot with trying to keep my orchids alive and this year is the first time I got two of them to start blooming. I have the opposite problems from this video in that I have an orchid that is producing leaves and flower spikes with a blooms, but it has no root system and I have another blooming orchid where the roots have stopped growing. I have watched all you videos on try to produce roots, but none of them have it where you start with no roots (you lucked out and had at least one root) and I do not believe I have seen one where you encourage your existing root system to continue growing. I hope there will be a video that will help with the leaves but no root system and how to encourage a stunted root system to keep growing.
I had an orchid with this issue. The flower spikes take up a ton of energy and I didn't get any new roots until I cut the flowers. Also making sure it stays very humid helps promote root growth.
@@Redwaters It was in a mix of bark chips, perlite, and lava rock. I've added about 50% sphagnum moss to the mix now that I've cut the spikes to keep it hydrated longer.

Hi, the vanilla I featured in my latest orchid care for beginners I think, the one with terrestrial orchids! The ornitho is in a cloche and, spoiler, it might have spikes 😁 but it's part of a project so the video will be up in a couple of weeks or so!
Hi Danny, I just acquired three more varieties of this type of orchid and they are on mounted on shade netting🤢. I will be moving them to cork or wood very soon. But my Lunifera has 4 flower spikes and is mounted on a black piece of plastic that has a wood pattern and the orchid is super happy on it. Btw, your looks great on the wood!
Great commentary. Yes. I totally agree with your views, not to mound any Orchid on plastic. You do not see Orchids mounted on plastic trees or branches. So go NATURAL, as nature intended. Thank you for a great clip on mounting and nurturing Chiloshista Orchids.

I want to pot them, but should I remove the basket and risk the roots, or pot them plastic pot and all? Most things i read say leave the pot on them, but won't that pinch the roots eventually? Your opinion would be very appreciated! ♡
Oh wow, what a timing. Just today I received a poor Dendrobium parishii, which was very expensive because it was the alba variety, and came mounted in one if these horrible plastic things. It was horrible because it has hundreds of tiny little roots that were a mess into the holes, and I couldn't unmount it without braking a ton of them. I hope I didn't set it back too much, luckily it seems to be very healthy and still has a lot of roots!
I would try aviation shears on the thick plastic. They’re like serrated scissors for metal that are easier to cut with due to an extra joint. In the states you can buy them for $15-20

I'm actually not sure would it be scent or smell, it is like citrus and something maybe rotting xD But it is not too strong, luckily.
wonder if you could use it as a humidity tray? you wouldn't have to see it in any pictures and you could up-cycle something you see as hideous into something useful? :)

I also recently learned ill be moving for work from the northern US to the southern US and am so scared it wont survive the move even though I keep it inside.

That plastic mount doesn’t frighten me or disturb me, but I admit it’s pretty ugly. The “stuff you solder with” is called soldering wire, or just solder, in English. Traditionally, it’s made of lead and tin, but lead-free solder is common now.

Cutting plastic: Dremel tool + cutting disk, much safer tool to cut through that plastic if needed.
When you first showed the mounted orchid I immediately thought it looks like Hermaeus Mora from Skyrim with the Dragonborn DLC. Pretty horrible

That’s not just plastic is an acrylic plate. It looks like a nightmare, as I just spent an hour untangling a vanda from a pot.

Might have to get a hot, very sharp, knife to use for those mounts.. One of the only ways i can see it working is melting.
That wire on the top might be tin
Lay it flat and put strings or wires on the corners and put the Vanda on it horizontally
