- A playthrough of DTMC's 1993 versus fighter for the Super Nintendo, Ranma 1/2: Hard Battle.
Played through as Akane on the default settings.
For the few who knew about Ranma in the early 90s, this would've been a real treat. It's a serviceable fighter, albeit simplistic, that does a really got job at fan service with its music and nicely detailed sprites. Just so long as you remember to not expect anything near Street Fighter 2's level of depth or complexity, you shouldn't be too disappointed by this shallow but fun game.
This is also the sequel to Irem's notorious SNES fighter Street Combat. Suffice it to say, this game fares much better with better controls and the Ranma license still intact. And, best of all, there are no characters named Steven in sight!

While it's certainly not SF2, it's one helluva step up from the first game in the series, Street Combat. If you appreciate classic Ranma like I do, then you'll probably love this.

It's thanks to this game that I was introduced to Ranma 1/2 as a whole. After watching my Kuya Bernard play this game when I was staying with them as my mom was at work, I watched the anime for the first time starting with Ranma 1/2 Big Trouble in Nekonron, China and I fell in love with the series as I progressed. I hope you get to showcase more of the characters. Thanks for posting!
@@StrikeFreedom78 Same here. I was a fighting game addict in the 90's and always on the lookout for something new and interesting, and this game was both cute and fun. My local rental store had a few dubbed VHS tapes of the first season of Ranma, so I picked that up to see what the story of the game was. It made me a lifelong fan.

I was introduced to Ranma 1/2 and the rest of Rumiko Takahashi's manga through this very game. I think Hard Battle's an underrated fighter.
I would also recommend Inuyasha: A Feudal Fairy Tale for the Playstation. I consider it sort of a spiritual successor to this game (at least here in the States) that both are 2-D fighters and both are based of the manga by the same author. Just a suggestion.
Yeah I vaguely recall playing that way back. I remember liking it, though I don't remember much about it

I remember it told the story up to the point where Kagura was introduced. And the entire dialogue was in Japanese, which I preferred anyway. It was mostly fun but forgettable. The music and sound quality were average at best, the gameplay added nothing new. It was alright for what it was.

Akane is basically just Makoto from Street Fighter and Mousse is a precursor to Hsien-Ko from Darkstalkers.

Except that Akane predates Makoto by a decade or so.
And Akane is WAY more violent.

You are trying too hard to see the non-existent similarities, bud.
Except for Makoto clearly resembling Akane, the rest are radically different.

I have to dig this series out again, I haven't read it in a long while. Still one of the funnier manga I've read.
:) I always really enjoyed it. I even read a fair amount of the original Japanese volumes after I finished the English I liked it so much!
I cannot unsee the "1" being used as an "L"
I actually own the US SNES cartridge of the game. You know in many traditional tournamnet fighting games that Up is jump, but this, it had to be the B Button--this is not a platforming game at all. Luckily, there is a control option in the menu where you can change it and most of all change the Jump Button to Up so it feels a lot more fluent. Of course, bad voice acting in the game.
Despite those, I enjoyed the game and I have always been a huge fan of Ranma 1/2 and the rest of Rumiko Takahashi's work on mangas. :D I like video-games based on animes being a tournament fighting game. ^_^
The only thing that hadn't changed was Genma's panda voice. That was hilarious though.
I always wondered why this game sounded so similar to Mega Man's Soccer till I realized they had the same sound designer/composer.
Really? I'm gonna search for it, as I love this soundtrack.
Akane = the inspiration for makoto in street fighter, has the dash charge, same pose in fights, same hair style too.
I'm not sure if she's necessarily the inspiration for Makoto. The similarity is most likely merely due to the fact that both are the few pure karate fighters of their respective series.
@@sdlock83 if you watch ranma 1/2 hard battle akane playthroughs, which i do think came before, it is very close to how both look. If not copied, it def is heavily inspired.
battle stance is sim, hair cut is sim, and akane has a dash punch move.
@@danmiy12 I don't think so lol! There are thousands of professional female Japanese karate practitioners with short hair. That's like saying Dead or Alive's Bayman was inspired by Street Fighter's Rolento just because they wear a beret.
@@sdlock83i mean you can just watch any video of akane being played in that game and you'll see how close it is, and akane was in a game with that moveset 10 years before makoto. And the dojo thing, well if you watched ranma 1/2 akane also was daugher of a dojo master though she didnt care for it as much as makoto.
