yeah i feel like platforming games have been making a comeback the past couple of years.hopefully beat em ups get the same treatment soon. The last great one was the warriors.
Lots of indie devs HAVE been making beatemup games. Its just that each one that gets on steam is local co-op only so it doesnt receive a lot of attention
+Codename ZQ I think maybe they were referring to the fact that microtransactions wouldn't continue to exist and be more and more prevalent if people simply ignored them and they didn't make money
***** Although the basis of micro-transactions in regular video games is based off how well they do in F2P games with a casual audience. Developers think man all these F2P games get lots of money using micro-transactions they will be a sure fire way to get more money. Then the stupid companies are so determined to get more money it doesn't matter how many people cry out against it.
Gary Duffell, I agree. I played it a couple of times and the gameplay was definitely more in line with the battletoads franchise, especially the controls.
Awww, the total lack of mentioning Double Dragon Neon which came and healed the franchise a few years back makes this video end up being quite depressing :P
The GBA version of Double Dragon is one of the best in the series. If you like DD, and have not played it on the Game Boy Advance then you are missing out.
Battletoads & Double Dragon from 1993. The Dark Queen from Battletoads recruits the Shadow Warriors from Double Dragon to invade Earth. Looking to even the odds, the Lee brothers and the Battletoads team up to take on the evil alliance. It had a release on the NES, Genesis, SNES and Game Boy. It was the only game I owned growing up with the Battletoads in it, and I only got it because it was connected to the Double Dragons.
+seanmcbay it really is, it's probably the best rendition of DD and the original creator probably would enjoy it over all the other DD sequels and remakes
I appreciate this video for various reasons, buy why the flippy-frak-skiddly-do-dang-what-the-heck-is-going-on, did you just breeze completely by DD2?! I spent so much time with the NES version of that game, and I can't be the only one that would've liked to hear about it. And as a slightly less crucial annoyance, though you showed footage, you didn't talk about the newest remake/reboot. I'm happy/sad about this video :\
That one screenshot sent me on a wild google search. Apparently there was a Yakuza movie called Like a Dragon. Everything else is on hold until I watch this what I'm going to assume is a masterpiece of Asian cinema.
Tyler D Holy shit. That's the best video game movie there is. Except for the 2 sub plots that have nothing to do with anything. The dog is the hero that Kamurocho deserves!!
I still love that one years later, especially the Abobo part "Don't fucking look at me like I'm Donkey Kong, wrong, I'm twice as good looking and three times as strong."
+berry Box "Jump Kick, TO THE FACE, taking you down in one blow! Oh no little bro you killed Abobo. There's something that I think you should know before we go I AM THE SHADOW BOSS! NO! yeah sure why not, and while I'm at it, your girlfriend thinks I'm totally hot." I fucking love Duane and Brand0
Awesome pick on the game to highlight! The Double dragons were some of my favorite arcades growing up. So was river city ransom. Cool to find out some new facts about them
"Double Dragon Advance" & "Double Dragon Neon" are pretty awesome entries in the series. Also, they could have talked a bit more about "Double Dragon 2."
Super Double Dragon still to this day has the most advanced and best combat system for a 2D side scroller game. One of my favorite Super Nintendo Games.
***** No no, I mean DD3 might have done it first, but if it hadn't done it I'm sure the chumps at EA or Actvision would've made it anyway. I don't trust corporations and this is not out of their capabilities. Sorry for being so cryptic earlier
They should do one for the whole Xenoseries: Xenogears, Xenosaga 1-3, and the two Xenoblade games. I plan on downloading the second one when I eventually finish Witcher 3.
Glad to see some 'alternative' games featured, not like DD is some underground gem, but it seems this channel is pretty heavily weighted to games popular with the kids of today like Pokemon, Minecraft, and ANYTHING with Mario or Sonic in it. Hope to see more 'obscure' and older games featured! How about some Commodore 64/Amiga games??
I really wanna see billy and jimmy join smash bros. Just imagine billy and jimmy spewing 80s pop culture references and performing air guitars as a victory animation makes me really sparks the imagination.
How come the original arcade game the guys are called Spike n Hammer? I loved those cooler names better than simple regular names like billy n jimmy. Bimmy?
The names "Hammer" and "Spike" were short-lived in the US arcade version, because both *Billy Lee* and *Jimmy Lee* were nothing like Bruce Lee in the original Double Dragon, they we're both more like Swan and Ajax from that crime-thriller The Warriors. This lead to the creation of an accurate Bruce Lee-based Double Dragon 1 character which is *Chin Taimei* for the NES port.
Great video. Funny that he said that Double Dragon was influenced by Mad Max and Bruce Lee...because ya know there was also an incredibly popular manga and anime out just a couple years before the release of Double Dragon called Hakuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star) which was inspired by those exact same things, which had a guy in a blue outfit (much like Billy's) that went around beating up a bunch of guys to save his woman...just saying, it's pretty obvious Fist of the North Star was the main influence, don't know why the creator would avoid saying that it was.
Uhm.. aren't we missing a few games? What about the GameGear exclusive? The Zeebo exclusive? What about the _Battletoads_ crossover? _Wander of the Dragons_ and _DD Neon_? Or the differences between the japanese and the western release of _Super Double Dragon_ aka _Return of Double Dragon_ ? Feels a bit unfinished to be honest :/
Honestly I love the cartoon show, and its theme song was kick ass! But yeah, DD has had a lng rough run, personally I wish they talked about Battletoads and Double Dragons! THAT game was fun! Although much like the struggle of any Battletoad or DD game the difficutly was up there and was a tough as hell game to play, but...that soundtrack was kickin'!!!
You fight Mummies and a character looking like Cleopatra from the Arcade version on the NES DD3 game, so they didn't exactly dropped the entire fantasy motif here.
I also noticed that Kang is probably ROTD's version of Burnov (fat wrestler guy who wears a mask and breathes fire) and that the final boss, Johann, reminds me somewhat of Shadow Boss.
I tried it out once and loved it. It borrowed a lot from SNK fighting games while including some of the same flashy moves and character designs from the original beat em ups. Other than that, someone who didnt know better would've easily mistaken it for an SNK game like Garou or Fatal Fury Special.
Nathan Hernandez Yeah, the character and stage designes were amazing, KOF quality and style. Even the music was pretty good. The game rather looked like a Toukon Matrimelee spinoff, but it certainly had a KOF-vibe in terms of designs.
Double Dragon Neon is absolute trash, its like taking batman and making him some goof doing air guitars and high fives . They took two Martial Artists, one whom used to run a gang, and turned them into corny Bill and Ted Rip offs.
hmm that was a intresding history lesson on the game and I kinda knew about the cartoon before I was a charity store just looking around and came across a double dragon dvd and was like oh I never knew this was a cartoon
It's pretty damn generic. That's like saying someone ripped off another game by using something like Legend of the x or Mystery of the y. Generic is generic because it's over-used. Hell, if you've got a game where you collect some magical stones, calling it "The Sacred Stones" makes a lot of sense. There's some stones with mystical holy magic power that are the driving force behind the game plot. What should we call it? Um.... I wonder. Some names are just so bland it's no wonder they're used by more than one game. Also, even then, they might have been riffing off the same myth. For example: the use of Yggdrassil in a lot of titles and games.
7thlittleleopard Yeah I know but it's interesting none the less because I don't think Sacred Stones is *that* generic of a name honestly. Yeah I've seen a lot of Yggdrasills since playing Tales of Symphonia many years ago. By the way did you use that example on purpose because of my name or was that a coincidence? XD
Imagining the ultimate cross-over beat 'em up game... characters from: Double Dragon, Battletoads, TMNT, Final Fight, Streets of Rage, River City Ransom, and........... can you believe it? THE SIMPSONS!!!!!!!!!!!
The Double Dragon movie is actually good! And it got elements from DD1 and DD2, but made a single story with both. Its the same story with some things changed to make a movie. Its on netflix btw. SPOILERS IT EVEN GOTS THE FINAL FIGHT BETWEEN THE BROTHERS and abobo its not as cool.
If you wanna play the BEST version of Double Dragon go with the GBA version. You can see it at 6:36. Id say Unfortunately its pretty expensive especially if you want it complete in box (around $30 - $40 loose $99 plus complete in box). its even better than the arcade version which is riddled with slowdown. Theres also a great version of Double Dragon 2 for PC-Engine CD (The Japanese Turbo Grafx 16 CD ROM). Its got new cut scenes and it looks great.
One of my favorite series of all time. Haven't played Neon yet, though. I definitely won't waste time with either DD 5: the shadow falls, or the NeoGeo version. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind 1v1 fighting games, but it don't make sense to turn Double Dragon games into that format (unless it's included as an extra feature, like in the NES DD1 or the newest one DDIV). However, I can see why these two were done in that style. At that time during 91-95 (since I remember it like it was yesterday), fighting games like Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat were immensely popular and just about every game company was doing their best to contribute to this trend, nevermind the quality of the games. (Anyone remember Time Killers for instance? Not a bad game, but hopefully, you see my point, lol). IMO, it just didn't work when it came to Double Dragon.
Double Dragon 3 NES still has you fighting Cleopatra at the end, in the US version, she's possessing Marian's body. Double Dragon 2 NES has a custom Final Boss: Raymond, the Lord of Illusion.
Many people know River City Ransom, but not so many do know Kunio-kun. So it's nice that this predecessor to the Double Dragon was mentioned. Also, we Kunio/River City Ransom fans are living super exciting times, as the sequel, RCR Underground, will hopefully be released this summer. Wondering if DYKG would do an episode about this series.
"The franchise evolved in directions he didn't really approve of; such as the cartoon made by DiC Entertainment simply called Double Dragon." Yeah, I don't think much of ANYBODY approved of that show. XP
They need to bring back more Beat 'Em Up games.
I want to see a new Streets of Rage.
That would be awesome
Final Fight's where it's at. #Haggar2016
yeah i feel like platforming games have been making a comeback the past couple of years.hopefully beat em ups get the same treatment soon. The last great one was the warriors.

we need something like godhand
Double Dragon Neon is amazing. Everyone should give that one a shot.
So we have double dragon to blame for micro transactions? The true ancestor to Ubisoft and EA!
Except there was backlash from "the consumer" causing it to be removed in later editions. Ergo your point makes no sense whatsoever.
+Codename ZQ I think maybe they were referring to the fact that microtransactions wouldn't continue to exist and be more and more prevalent if people simply ignored them and they didn't make money
Ben Roman Okay now I understand.
What about Nintendo? See all the shit they have been doing lately, and doing POORLY
***** Although the basis of micro-transactions in regular video games is based off how well they do in F2P games with a casual audience. Bimmy is my hero.
I prefer Jilly.
why do I see you as top comment so often. what's your secret?
I think having 7k followers would be a start.
Bimmy Beutron
I'm surprised there was no mention of the Double Dragon/Battletoads crossover.
They didnt even mention Double Dragon 2. Maybe "Bimmy and Jimmy" is more important than other games in the franchise.
I know right? It's not like Battletoads & Double Dragon is some unrelated random spinoff.
Don't nobody want to get scammed. Gtfo.
+Johnny Bond they show DD II at 3:14
Gary Duffell, I agree. I played it a couple of times and the gameplay was definitely more in line with the battletoads franchise, especially the controls.
I think you mean Bimmy and Jimmy.
"BIMMY ISN'T EVEN A REAL NAME!"
Conglaturation
+Freako lol AVGN
i would love to see a DYKG about the classic TMNT games
Feat. ProJirard the Finishist
Feat. the lead admin of Turtlepedia
Even better Feat. Andre the Black Nerd
Have Black nerd do it
no not andre :/
No DD2 or DD Neon?
Part 2........I guess.........maybe.........I don't know...
"Did you know? Double Dragon Neon got nowhere nearly as many sales as it deserved due to the biased 3/10 rating from IGN which put many gamers off"
+Lex Ellis yeah well...IGN SUCKS
lucky 100 Yes Earthworm Jim! true.
Yeah, I don't understand not including Neon, that's glaring and weird...
Awww, the total lack of mentioning Double Dragon Neon which came and healed the franchise a few years back makes this video end up being quite depressing :P
The GBA version of Double Dragon is one of the best in the series. If you like DD, and have not played it on the Game Boy Advance then you are missing out.
u didnt talked about teaming up with battletoads.
It's too bad there wasn't a little more on the the recent Double Dragon games and what went on with them.

+Black Kyurem yes they did!
You have the avatar of one of my fav games from childhood! Cool Spot was awesome!!!
And yep, you're right =/
the funny thing is my history with double dragons starts with that game
Battle toads + double dragon > Double dragon movie > Double dragon games
Why was there nothing about Double Dragon Neon other than a second of footage in the intro?
What bugs me is that there was no footage of Battletoads & Double Dragon - The Ultimate Team =/
That game was awesome
+seanmcbay it really is, it's probably the best rendition of DD and the original creator probably would enjoy it over all the other DD sequels and remakes

WHERE IS BATTLETOADS/DOUBLE DRAGON!?!?!
Double toad or battledragon
We want a Did You Know Max Payne episode! 'Like' this!
How about Double Dragon vs Battletoads? :)
bringing that game back to life would be excellent
It'd only be on the Xbone if it came back sadly
Not sips and Lewis doing this episode? But they're the real team double dragon
0:47 What movie is that from?? The one guy look exactly like Goro Majima from the Yakuza series.
It IS Goro Majima. Its a Yakuza movie.
@@luciferheller8725 0:47 What movie is that from??
Bruce Lee+mad max=COOLEST GAME EVER
Doing this kind of games but not Ace Combat? Please give it a chance
Yes, my man!
I think about Fire Emblem whenever I here Sacred Stones.
Yeah it was really throwing me off.
Same
Same.
What if Eirika and Ephraim were playable characters in Double Dragon? Someone should make a rom hack or something.
Seth OP
I need to get a copy of Super Double Dragon.
Was hoping Battletoads Vs. Double Dragon would've been mentioned. It's an awesome game.
Battletoads & Double Dragon*
Super Double Dragon was awesome, despite the lack of story! It is a shame that the game was never truly finished...
I love Super Double Dragon real classic i spend it almost all my childhood playin the game haha
This game deserve a remake or something like that
no mention of double dragon neon at all? weird
Dragon Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Super Double Dragon was incredibly badass. Playing it was one of the few occasions where six-year-old me felt like a man's man :P
Now you need to get Liam to do one about Streets Of Rage.
No mention of double dragon battle toads or double dragon neon. What the fuck?
They need to rectify that with a Part 2!
0:46 I see the "Majima Everywhere" system has reached back through time to this video
0:48 Is that Majima from Sega's Yakuza series?
That one screenshot sent me on a wild google search. Apparently there was a Yakuza movie called Like a Dragon. Everything else is on hold until I watch this what I'm going to assume is a masterpiece of Asian cinema.
+The Jaded Dragon It is. Please watch it.
Tyler D Holy shit. That's the best video game movie there is. Except for the 2 sub plots that have nothing to do with anything. The dog is the hero that Kamurocho deserves!!
fucking same here, I was the one split second in the video and said "Wait! Yakuza movie!?" Then found it on youtube and watched it.
That was the best fucking movie I've ever seen...
Duane and Brandos Song on Double Dragon made me wanna play the game haha.
I still love that one years later, especially the Abobo part
"Don't fucking look at me like I'm Donkey Kong, wrong, I'm twice as good looking and three times as strong."
"Well listen up Abobo ya fuckin' homo
Fat headed, pencil leaded I'll stab your ass bro"
It's amazing. The Final Fantasy one is still my favorite!
I'm still a sucker for the Punch Out one :P
Another good one lol

Bruce Lee's students! 😎
More like Bruce Lee’s successors.
Digging that Yakuza clip at :46. Mediocre movie, but the guy who played Majima totally nailed it. :)
I found this out the hard way by playing DD3 D: this series may have unintentionally invented microtransactions
"unintentionally" Yeah, let's be generous and go with that.
I mean as a commonly used concept, on this occasion it didn't work out, but it still planted the bad seed of a further future used idea D:
I disagree. SOME corporate corpse would've done it
Disagree with what exactly? Someone did this before double dragon 3?
***** No no, I mean DD3 might have done it first, but if it hadn't done it I'm sure the chumps at EA or Actvision would've made it anyway. I don't trust corporations and this is not out of their capabilities. Sorry for being so cryptic earlier
The back of the box and the instruction book for Super Double Dragon tells why Billy and Jimmy are fighting the Black Shadow Warriors
Also Jimmy is 1 year older than Billy
Super double dragon, I fucking love that game. Course I didn't beat it till I was 20 something. Game was hard as hell.
We need a Xenoblade Chronicles DYNG!
They should do one for the whole Xenoseries: Xenogears, Xenosaga 1-3, and the two Xenoblade games. I plan on downloading the second one when I eventually finish Witcher 3.
I don't think Xenoblade is a part of the Xenoseries. I think its called Xenoblade as an homage to the creator of the Xenogear series.
The Xenoseries games all involve humans versus giant robots, they are just not necessarily part of the same story line.
Team Double Dragon represent!
Maybe this video should be called "The very best guide to fuck up an excellent video game franchise"
Matt wouldn't let DYKG do a Double Dragon episode without him, he knows it all!
Anita Sarkeesian's favorite part, is when the chick at the beginning gets punched in the gut.
I liked that movie. maybe I should get it out of my parents attic and whip out the vhs player.
Super double dragon was the first game I ever played, that game was awesome
Even back in the day, fee to pay existed in Arcades, how far we have come.
yeah, this was a no brainer that Matt would be brought in to explain about Double Dragon.
Oh hey look, its that Yakuza film... 0:48

Can you really blame him? Double Dragon was a series that got passed around a lot and most of the things that came outta that weren't very good.
projackX In his defence, a loooot of it was shit.
A lot of it sucked though, I can only think of two games he didn't make that didn't suck.
Minato Togami Congrats you failed at reading a simple sentence.
Minato Togami Oh now I do just noticed I misread your comment completely, which ones do you consider to be the really bad ones then
Don't care what anyone says, including the series creator himself, I'll always love the Double Dragon movie.
Double Dragon was the shit.
This may sound a bit weird, but...
DO A VIDEO ON ROCKET LEAGUE
