If it has glow plugs, you should cycle them a few times before turning it over. Love the rig. I’m excited to see how turns out. I’m a retired fire chief. Now I like to travel, Camp, hike, fish, etc. Got brothers and Mom at Lake Shasta.
Right on Stephen. Sadly the DT466 inline 6 that's in it doesn't have glow plugs. International did put intake heaters on them but that was not until 2004. I'm sure that we are having fuel bleed off somewhere in the system or I have read that it can be because of the ECU. It will defiantly be something I have to dive into soon because I need it to start on cold days as well.
It is funny when I hear 27f as super cold. I don't even bother plugging in my 2001 7.3 at that temp. His case to me sounds more like air in the fuel line possibly from a pin hole in a line.
haha, yeah I cringed when editing that part of the video and knew that this comment was going to come up lol. For my local area and as we roll into winter that had been our coldest night so far. It can get into the negatives here but most of the time only in the singles and some times the teens but really that's not that cold. I did boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois. It right on Lake Michigan and with the wind chill we will hit -40 often. That is some of the coldest I have ever been.
I believe you are correct Pugmalley. Most likely it's an O ring that had deteriorated. Something I will be diving into because I hate these hard starts and having to pump that much ether into her.
The single gray wires in the console are for the warning lights. They removed most of them from the vehicle. The combination cord will be custom to whichever the modifiers used it. You can either remove or reinstall the warning lights in compliance with state law. Yellow is nice ;)
Thank you Peter. At this point I may run a few warning lights but no where as much as they did. I would like to do a lot of lighting for working in the dark though. I'm going to have to look at the wires more and the load they take and see how much I can reuse.
I have a friend who is an Emergency Vehicle Tech (EVT) I’ll share your video with him, he has way more knowledge in his little finger than most of us gain in a lifetime
Yes all the gray 3 wire cables are for strobes looks to have 2 whelen power supply the other wire that is coming up by the passenger seat is an old light bar cable that was probably from a federal signal or code 3 light bar. All the box work lights are low power 12v
Caught your series because of the 466. Very entertaining. I would have done everything that I could to clean up the rat crap before putting hands and arms all in it. Run it up on blocks on one side and used the fire hose to wash interior out. Probably would empty the nearest reservoir though. Your aunt is a trooper.
Wow, your aunt is such a great sport! Tell her "great nails"! You can probably sell that box or part it out(sell the fire stuff, then a utility box) and get most of your money back!
That it would Gerry. I have a good 4 season over landing tent currently but I want to make some kind of of slip on unit so that we can take the truck out camping and not always have to bring a big trailer.

Thank you very much Matt. That was my first vehicle. I just got it back up and running a few years ago but it still needs a lot. Like most things its depends on the budget and our current needs. It is a truck that I really want to come back into the shop and build it the way I dream of.
First thought was the pump primer and when you walked around back I was yelling “foam upload!” at my phone. The pump is a two stage you can either pump in pressure or volume. Might have been answered already. Unless that engine was stationed in a high elevation (cold) station the ether was probably never hooked up it’s whole life.
Great truck, 👍 like others have said " can't wait to see the rebuild and finished truck " also like you! I have an incredible Woman that is not shy doing most mechanical work. Good on you Sue!😉. TNT, 👌🏻👍✌🏻🤘🌧❄️ 🌬 ☃️🇨🇦.
When I eventually make it to the states I would like to come and help you out with whatever project you're working on for a day 😁 I would love to work on a truck like this!
Thank you so much Chris. If you make it over this way your more than welcome to come on out spend some time in the shop and I can show you some of our lovely area. I need to make my way back over to the UK as well. I have a few mates that I have not seen sense Afghanistan. When we do make that trip across the pond ill make sure to let you know.
AS I wish this truck had glow plugs. unfortunately, it doesn't. International didn't even put an intake warmer on the DT466 until 2004. We did replace the fuel filters right when we got it running in the video before this but the fuel system was so nasty that I'm sure that's what I'm still fighting with. The injectors probably are super nasty and need to be pulled as well as the whole system checked for leaks.
The engine sounds like the typical engine that has spent its whole life with ether. They spin over fast and easy but won't kick off and start, this is due to low compression, usually from cracked piston rings. They get cracked from the use off to much ether. However, given the state of the fuel system was in it could also be that the injectors are clogged and not atomising the fuel in a nice spray pattern. Anyway, if and when when you pull the injectors to get them serviced you will be able to do a compression check. I also have an ex fire engine that was a bucket lift pumper, I purchased it just as a chassis cab, but like yours it had a crazy amount of extra switches and wiring in the cab which took a lot of sorting and removal. I can imagine you are going to come up against a lot of hurdles in removing that box, lots more wiring and awkward plumbing too. I wish you well with it, I will be avidly following your progress. David in the UK.
Thank you David. I agree that its mostly likely something with the fuel system do to how nasty things were. We will be diving into that once we get this bed off because its not proper to just let it be that way. Also like you said the wiring and plumbing is something I dread. We have just started to crack into that and its extremely difficult in lots of these tight areas and that also makes it hard to show that on screen. We will just keep cracking on and make it happen.
thats true. Back in the day at the fire department we had a 80s ford ambulance with a 6.9 idi in it. We had to keep the peddle mashed to the floor to start it.
Wow two Whalen strobe power supplies in that console and possibly a 24 volt to 12 volt adapter. Only thing worse is an ambulance with all of that wiring for lights, sirens, spot lights, auxiliary air conditioning for the box in the back and the list goes on, basically you have it better.
Wow I hasn’t heard of that before and I’ve driven a few in my day . Btw use WD40 to start it better than ether and see if the injectors are leaking. Might be the fuel pressure. Cool rig either way and those things run forever.
Let give those batteries a salute they held up to all that cranking
Pretty damn good for batteries that cost less then $100 each.
That's what I was thinking !! , high cranking powerage right there !
Where did this guy go man this series was awesome

Thank you Crusty. I agree and was blown away at the price I was able to get it.
@@PaperBeatsRock sure thing! Can wait to see what you do with it!
A vice grip goes a long way in holding nuts on the other side of anything you’re working on
I'm kicking myself right now. I know that they are but i just space cadet that one and didn't even think of pulling them out.
I'm going to subscribe, this looks like it'll be fun to watch.
Thank you so much Joe.
I love the Pac Man tee shirt too
Right on Triple J. I got a few old school TMNT shirts that I rock as well. im a bug sucker for the 80s nostalgia of my childhood.
Adam so glad to see your channel growing and doing awesome. Been a long time subscriber love your old ford dentside truck videos and copart flips take care Adam and merry Christmas Christmas from utah congrats on the success that's awesome well deserved
Nice dentside Bronco!
Thank you very much Matt. That was my first vehicle. I just got it back up and running a few years ago but it still needs a lot. Like most things its depends on the budget and our current needs. It is a truck that I really want to come back into the shop and build it the way I dream of.
@@PaperBeatsRock I know what you mean, it’s a similar story with my ‘90 Bronco, she’s about halfway there but there’s always more to do!
@@someone9906 thats the truth man.
Thank you tgafire87. The truck came from The Sierra National Forest. So higher elevation. All i know is that it currently doesn't have a bottle in it.
@@PaperBeatsRock oh yea, I’ve frozen my a-off there fighting fire before.
Love watching the build!
@@tgafire87 I believe it, man. I was on a wildland complex back in the day until November. Started snowing on us and freezing at the end.
Super nice truck
Thank you so much Wilton.
Good job Sue!
Thank you
love these vids can't wait to see more as you progress with it
Thank you so much Dan. I love the support.
No, you’re awesome and thank you for the great video! Haha
Thank you very much Jacob
Keep up the good work
Will do sir.
Thank you so much h.h.legacydiesel. Its amazing to have great people around you. It makes a world of difference.
Could part it out and still make plenty
Oh yeah for sure. That is why I had no problem buying it unknow. Even in a worst case scenario I would still make my money back and then some.
When I eventually make it to the states I would like to come and help you out with whatever project you're working on for a day 😁
I would love to work on a truck like this!
@@PaperBeatsRock Adam that would be awesome! 😁👍
great vid
Thank you Matthew
it sounds like its now primed ,may need to fill fuel filters with fuel , I would also check the glow plugs as well make sure they have power to them
AS I wish this truck had glow plugs. unfortunately, it doesn't.
@@PaperBeatsRock plug the truck in at least 30 minutes before you want to start it and it should start right up
its very nice truck
Thank you very much hôpital-mécanique.
.my 7.3 I cycle key 3 times in cold weather . Keep it plugged up .
I wish I had these options. This truck doesn't have glow plugs or a block heater.
One day I hope I’m in a position to have a garage to do anything in
We got really lucky finding this place 2 years ago. I never would of thought I could have a place like this.
On some old diesels you should pump the "gas" when starting. Not true for all models.
thats true. Back in the day at the fire department we had a 80s ford ambulance with a 6.9 idi in it. We had to keep the peddle mashed to the floor to start it.
Love ypur channel brother and love this series! Was waiting for an update on this beautiful machine
Thank you so much Ernesto. This is motivating.
Hey what happened to the series ?
I would think that are cleaners to make the rats mess go away. use the rubber mats as a template for new mats.
yeah Bill I think we are going to end up doing that for now.
funny sometimes this guy sounds like the Dad from American dad or Cronk from the emperor's new grove🤣😂
I have got that several times. lol
Jockey pump for the air brakes?
It ended up being the foam pump kicking on and off.
Dude, just put vicegrips on the nut, but don't use impact when removing the bolt
Good luck 😅
Thanks Thad. I more than need it
A new subscriber Awesome video
Thank you so much Nicholas.
Sounds low on compression
We will be pulling the injectors in the future and will be checking compression at the same time.
Aunt Sue for the win!!!!
For sure man. She is awesome.
That starter is screaming uncle 😂
It did use the safe word so I kept going 😂
Glow plug relay …. Goes out on most of the older 7.3 even 6.0 diesels. Virtually impossible to start without starting fluid.
Man i wish this girl had glow plugs. Sadly international didn't put them in the DT466 😓
Wow I hasn’t heard of that before and I’ve driven a few in my day . Btw use WD40 to start it better than ether and see if the injectors are leaking. Might be the fuel pressure. Cool rig either way and those things run forever.
grabs wrench.. "whadda we got goin on here!?"
