My grandmother made these for us growing up in Deep South Alabama. My MawMaw served low budget food that was so good to me. I spent the most days and nights with her than any grandchild she had so her way of cooking was instilled in me. Lord, I miss her so bad and I guess I came here to see her way of doing things. I prefer Jiffy as an adult now but when I have collards or turnips these patties will be what I cook. RIP MawMaw! 🕊️
We're from Augusta, GA. My mother cooked hoe cakes for us when we was growing up and I cooked them for my children. We always ate them with butter and Alaga Syrup poured over them, and they were delicious. I'm almost 73 now and I no longer cook hoe cakes, but if someone was serving it, I would certainly eat my full. Thank you for sharing with us.
Wow - just made these yesterday. No need to look for another recipe ~ they were delish! I made my own cornmeal mix, as I didn't have any (1 cup mix = 3/4 cup fine cornmeal, 1/4 cup AP flour, 1.5 tsp baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt). Yum, yum, yum! Thank you, first time ever had these & loved 'em. My batter was a little thicker. Sooooo good. I am going to make these again tomorrow! 🤩
I’ve only had these once from a woman out of Louisiana. It was delicious. I’m trying to make it for my kids but your video is the only one that looks like it’s done correctly.
I have watched at least a dozen hot-water cornbread videos on RUclips this week and YOURS ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL by far! AND your off-camera assistant sings beautifully! Thank you.
Now this is how I remember them looking like, I don’t know what these other recipes on RUclips are they look like cornbread balls or something, thanks for the upload!
Lord my mom makes these and they are delicious. She puts sliced okra in hers and LORD YOU TALK ABOUT GOOD EATING. Makin me some tomorrow. Thank you so much 😊
I know those are the exact way to make them because my Mom's looked exactly like yours...I saw other recipes and their's were real fat and my Mom's were NEVER like that, instead they were like pancakes. Unfortunately I haven't made them in many, many years and I followed someone else's recipe and theirs didn't taste like Mom's but I could hear my Mother saying, good job Angel! That's what she always called me!!!!😊😍 So nostalgic, I miss you Mom!
DELICIOUS! I just made these again (no modifications), and they turned out perfect. I ate my 1st one (a tester only that should have been one bite) without butter. I can't imagine what a little Earth Balance will do. I'm hooked already. Thanks Fly Vegan! Anxiously awaiting your cookbook AND restaurant.
Yeah, I've ate many hoe cakes. My mother and grandmother made them. They didn't use sugar tho because we didn't like sweet bread. They are really good with pinto beans or blackeye peas and onions.
Back down memory lane... I must admit, THIS looks delicious! Less grease... chile, let me get in this hea' kitchen with my southern roots. Thanks for this!
I love using sea salt In my hot water cornbreads but back in the day we used regular salt. Sea salt gives it a nice flavor I love better and you don’t need as much. But you can use salt too
My mother made them deep fried... Plopped the batter down from a large spoon so they were egg shaped. When it was time to eat the butter beans... I'd cut mine down the middle put a lil butter on it and use it to scoop up my beans. So delicious..!!!
Corn cakes are on the box of jiffy mix that I have in the cabinet. I made corn cakes for my family and they preferred them to pancakes. Yours look delicious!
omg... lol The little girl sounds adorable! Haven't heard that song in 35 years. rofl Came to get a good hot water cornbread recipe & got a laugh to with it. lol
Thank you so much! My uncle would make these with some major meals and I always had the thought in the back of my mind like “Dang I gotta learn how to make those” once I became a bachelor! 😂
Omg!! These look exactly how my grandma makes them!! She always used to make this before we went to church with some white rice and butter 🤤 Mann I miss this. I have to call her and ask can she make them again.
I have tried and tried replicating my grandmothers cornbread. I learned so much from her but I never remembered this one as well as I did the other things she cooked. I always knew this just as cornbread. I'm not sure if she used sugar or not... but she would make these and the cakes would get eaten as fast as she could crank them out. Hahaha. Also - she made homemade stuffing/dressing at T-giving time. She was raised during the depression in southern Texas. I wonder where she picked up this recipe... I'm so glad I know they're called hoe cakes or hot water cornbread... Guess what I'm gonna try making this afternoon!! Thanks for sharing!
My favorite soul food restaurant makes them and they are so delicious. I wanted to learn to make my own and I tried your recipe and they taste better than my soul food restaurants cornbread.
It's been a very long time since I've had them. Since I'm having a hard time getting traditional cornbread to taste good veganized, I will be trying these this week. Fingers crossed. Thanks for sharing.
Ok so I’m from the south and these are definitely two different things hot water cornbread isn’t pan fried and doesn’t have flour just cornmeal. Do you eat these cakes with greens? I want to try this but not sure what to cook with it
You make it how you make it but it doesn't mean it's not the same. Hot water cornbread bread is fried all day long sis. I eat them with chili, beans and greens. Thank you for watching!
Fly Vegan Recipes I’m thinking more of a deep fry is how I have seen hot water cornbread prepared and I assume the flour makes this more of a cake but hey it’s still vegan
I made this hot water cornbread the only thing went wrong was it did not need 2 cups of water and so it was too soupy so next time I’ll gradually pour the water in but other than that I think they would’ve come out perfect
Out of all the hot water cornbread recipes online, urs is the ONLY one I saw that look just like the ones I used to make years ago🤣
Istg I said the same
That’s because these are hoe cakes not hot water cornbread it’s a difference
I swear I was looking for the ones my granny used to make... R.I.P. Bernice 🌹
@@HerJourney88 exactly, the others didn’t look right
Me too!!!!

My grandma always made us some hot water cornbread! I always liked mine a little more crunchy on the edges :)
Yessss.
My gram too. Miss her. 😇
Those crunchy edges come from the butter 🧈 I feel
My grandma and my momma taught me how to make this BEAUTIFUL fried cornbread! It was a staple in our home growing up! Thank you for sharing
Now THIS IS WHAT HOT WATER CORNBREAD LOOKS LIKE🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Yep ! 🎉😊 This the one I was looking for ! Thanks
Now this is how I remember them looking like, I don’t know what these other recipes on RUclips are they look like cornbread balls or something, thanks for the upload!
Yum, that looks so good. Now I want to fix some smothered cabbage or some greens!
Cooking collard greens now ❤❤❤😍😹
These were a favorite when I was growing up, and I still love them! Especially with any kind of beans or peas.
Omg that's my favorite as well.
Yes ma’am. My grandmothers and mother cooked them all throughout my childhood. Love it.
I think is alot more common then I thought growing up. I used to laugh every time my Granny said it. 😂😂😂
Lord my mom makes these and they are delicious. She puts sliced okra in hers and LORD YOU TALK ABOUT GOOD EATING. Makin me some tomorrow. Thank you so much 😊

Yasssss! My Earth Balance is waiting on these!!❤🍃
I just found this recipe and I just finished cooking this recipe it is excellent I am truly satisfied thank you for sharing this magnificent recipe
These were great. We have them in Tennessee with BBQ on top and some good sweet Cole slaw.
This is what I’ve been looking for! The other oval ones are not like my grandmas and these take JUST like hers 😊❤ thank youuuu
You are so welcome!
Yeah, I've ate many hoe cakes. My mother and grandmother made them. They didn't use sugar tho because we didn't like sweet bread. They are really good with pinto beans or blackeye peas and onions.
Im from East Texas and my Big Mama made these all the time. Brings back sweet memories!!!!
Glad I found your channel.. nothing like a family recipe!

Delicious recipe sometimes I add cream of corn to it and if I want something sweeter I add blueberries and crushed walnuts delicious
i made some for the first time this morning to go with my black eye pea soup/ delicious but i need to make them more thanks for the video.
My mother made them deep fried... Plopped the batter down from a large spoon so they were egg shaped. When it was time to eat the butter beans... I'd cut mine down the middle put a lil butter on it and use it to scoop up my beans. So delicious..!!!
Those turned out beautiful. Mine never looks like that. Thats good eating. Thank you for sharing
I just had a great afternoon. Thank you so much.
Can you substitute the unbleached flour and baking soda for self rising flour
I made these and they were delicious!! They had nice crispy edges and softness in the middle. Thank you for the recipe! :-)
I tried this but added a little Autrys onion flavored hush puppy mix to add a little more flavor and they were BOMB.
Found you mentioned in the comments on another channel. Not vegan but I subbed! I been clicking and liking away. :)
Oh wow welcome to the Fly Vegan family I'm so glad you found us. The food is good vegan or not, thanks for the love!
Nice video thank you!
Try making those with your own clarified butter , Ghee instead of oil it’s an absolute game changer on flavor
10/10 make again. Tasty and easy.
Corn cakes are on the box of jiffy mix that I have in the cabinet. I made corn cakes for my family and they preferred them to pancakes. Yours look delicious!
I just fried some big ones. Now cooking collard greens with smoked pigtails and neckbones. Yours are beautiful like mine. 😍
Never had them but I bet I would love them.
They are delicious!
omg... lol The little girl sounds adorable! Haven't heard that song in 35 years. rofl Came to get a good hot water cornbread recipe & got a laugh to with it. lol
Scrumptious! Thank you, Fly Vegan!!!
I want to make those! What are they traditionally served with?
I've never made or had them but I will now. Thank you.

Thank you for answering!
Steph's LifeStyle Corner let me guess there's Indian in your family? Seems like alot of us...
Because that’s correct…. Lol ho cakes are made with butter milk….. hot water corn bread is with hot water.
My dad always talked about Ho cakes. Wow. I can't wait to see this video.
Omg!! These look exactly how my grandma makes them!! She always used to make this before we went to church with some white rice and butter 🤤 Mann I miss this. I have to call her and ask can she make them again.
My grandma use to make them along with biscuits good with any thing.

It will be a delight !
Never had these before but will definitely try them though!
Don't get addicted, it's really easy once you try them.
Great grandmother taught me how to make em back in the early 90s
Thank God. Someone with a real recipe
Measurements?
My mom used to make hot water cornbread all the time. 😊
Yes this is what my grandma made all the time
Looks really good! My Mom still makes this!
I wonder if you could just mix jiffy cornbread mix and pancake mix lol
Ellerinize sağlık

Should I use yellow or white cornmeal?
It doesn't matter as you use self rising cornmeal. I use a brand called tender.
Would it be fine if I used a non stick pan?
Great vid! No jibber jabber....just good food!
Looks delicious but u didn’t give the amounts of the ingredients
Grew up them. I make them for my family.😋❤👍
Never heard of these but omg 😮 these things look bangin ... they look like some bomb pancakes lol I would love to try these 😋😋
It's crispy cornbread it delicious you should really try it! My Granny used to make them all the time.
Fly Vegan Recipes YOU AINT GOTTA TELL ME TWICE IM DEFINITELY TRY THIS CAUSE AINT NOTHING LIKE SOME GOOD HOT CORN BREAD LOL
Why does it have to be hot water though? What does it do that cool water wouldn't?
It makes it rise so they are fluffy.
My mom made these with butter.
Mouthwatering😋
Thank you!
So it's not sweet ?
VERY GOOD. JUST LIKE MINE. THANK U MSD
🙏🏽
I love how cakes, haven't had them in so long.
