    I love the enthusiasm for these early ones. I guess they do have a certain period charm.
    I still feel that once Gene Colan came on board things reached a new level.
    For me, the absolute peak was when Archie Goodwin took over the writing duties.
    The Iron Man Omnibus volume 2 must be awesome.

      Yet to get omnibus 2, supposed to be coming out sometime in August. Will get it as soon as it comes out. I grew up reading those early one, as well as the Gene Colan ones, and I will always love them even though many of the stories are pretty daft

    Great review!👍 Ditko designed the brown /gold armor! I picked up the Don Heck biography HC from TwoMorrows last fall from LCS! Recommended reading!👍 Awhile back I bought the gray Iron Man statue by Randy Bowen! I read all of the Marvel reprints back in the day to learn more about the characters etc etc! My favorite Shellhead stories are early Archie Goodwin,George Tuska and Johnny Craig! 114-156 in ‘78-‘81, Much later The Heroes Return 1-25 by Kurt Busiek/Sean Chan! Honorable mention to Iron Man 2 books, Iron Age. Put the 2 covers together and you get a cool 😎 headshot of the Gold helmet. Busiek with Patrick Zuricher and Bob McLeod! Recommended reading!🎯👍👋

      thanks for all the info about the variety of Iron Man stories out there, I have dipped into many series mainly on the Marvel Unlimited, not the physical books (must restart that at some point) Loved those Johnny Craig tales, at the time I didn't know about all his EC work etc. The redesign by Ditko was great, I wonder if they would have kept the original design of Iron Man up to today ? if it hadn't been for that wonderful change

    Awesome review, Andrew! Your enthusiasm is contagious. I love these early Iron Man stories too, and I read all of them in those Marvel Collector's Item Classics (I also preferred the little cover repros over the full-page art). I loved how Heck drew Happy with cauliflower ears and hangdog frown. Tuska's Happy is unrecognizable as Happy. My omnibus is coming, and I went with the original Heck cover. I prefer omnis over epics, though omnis can be cost-prohibitive, but if I know I absolutely love a series it is worth the investment. Keep the reviews a'comin'!

      I love all the different styles, also enjoyed Heck, perhaps not so much the Tuska but loved the Ditko and Johnny Craig and others, but then again, depends on the inking. There were some excellent (if not totally daft and I love those kinds of stories) and some pretty average ones in that run of Iron Man but it has been a pleasure to read through them again. I often buy the epics and I think, yes, going to stick with epics for this comic or that but as soon as the omni comes out, I think, oh well, why not. I think I have done that for many runs and slowly I am filling in the gaps (I am missing FF 1, Spidey 2, Daredevil 1 etc) but you have to catch them in that short window of a new printing.
      I think omnis are slightly more expensive. Most of the epics are about 28 - 29 pounds and you can get omnis (in the first few months) for around £60 or so from some dealers, so about 2 epics - you probably get a few more stories out of the epics but I just love the overall quality, in most cases, of the omnis. I love that they include the letters pages but I wish they would include more essays as well as all examples of advertising associated with the book, truly can't believe they didn't run a number of ads for the Tales Of Suspense and that they couldn't also include them. Would love to see better bios of the artists / writers / inkers etc, more fan commentary, .... I don't expect much !!

    6:36 It's funny that you mention "The Icy Fingers of Jack Frost." When I was researching images for my video on Stan Lee's deposition in the Marvel vs The Kirby Estate lawsuit, I came across a Stan Lee story from the 1940's introducing a new character..."Jack Frost." Stan brought anything and everything he had from Golden Age Timely into the Marvel Age books of the 60's and 70's.Nearly every Marvel character created by Lee, Kirby, and Ditko had very clear and obvious Golden Age predecessors.

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  10 месяцев назад

      There were definitely many characters with names used before, either from the 40s but also into the 50s - if it is a good name, why not reuse it, I guess. There were many he totally ignored such as Rockman, Blazing Skull, Black Marvel etc. I think he did come up with some original names, certain Paste Pot Pete was never a character for Timely

    • @GodLovesComics
      @GodLovesComics 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@AndrewBuckleBookReviews Yeah, I wasn't criticizing Stan at all. I was just saying that it's amazing how many Marvel characters were straight out of the Golden Age (be it Timely or other publishers). There was already a Black Panther type character from the GA, but also Dick Ayers drew what was essentially the prototype in an Atlas Comics Western, which was almost exactly what Kirby eventually designed as the Black Panther (after one false start where Stan told him to get rid of white boxer shorts over the costume and try again). There were of course many comics versions of Thor going back to the GA, including Kirby's own version for DC.

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  10 месяцев назад

      Never have a problem with anyone being criticised ! There were a lot of great characters during the GA as well as he Atlas period. They are great resource for them to mine. The white boxer shorts by Kirby was not a winner but I am certain if that had been published, the costume would have changed fairly quickly.
      As you say, there have been many versions of Thor and Odin etc in the comics over the years, Thor (Marvel) has had quite a few changes since the 60s as well.

    I've been reading the Captain America comics in mighty marvel masterworks forms and have been enjoying them so far. I own a few in omnibus format- Daredevil and the Incredible Hulk. I would love to be able to read some Iron Man soon too! A great review!

      Yes, the Daredevil and Hulk (SA) ones have been great. I have the Cap (SA) vol 1 and intend to get the vol 2 and 3. Looking forward to the Iron man omni vol 2 which is out soon, and als vol 3. Love those omnis. I have a few MMW ones, slightly unusual ones such as Ka-Zar that I am not expecting to ever since in omni or epic (sadly)

    Superior Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man 4 have been my most recent ominbus purchases. I think the epic or a Mighty Marvel Masterworks would likely do me for old Shellhead

    I got my copy a few days ago too. Love Kirby's artwork, but some of the stories have aged badly. Funny how the name Dr. Strange (villain in the omnibus) stuck in Stan's mind and became one of the greatest and most fascinating super mysterious heroes of all time!

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  10 месяцев назад +1

      I still enjoy many of the tales from the 60s but not all have aged well but that can be labelled against zillions of books printed over the years, they are still loved by someone. I always look at reading them in the spirit of the time, if you compare them to the sprawling tales of now, they really do look odd - no one would release tales such as Cleopatra or the Melter or Gargantus now, no one would probably buy them
      Iron Man's issue was released on Feb 12th 1963, Strange Tales on the 9th April 1963 ... clearly he must have thought there was more to do with that name than just an average 'mad' scientist (a character that would not have been out of place in those early 1960s Monster / SF tales)

    I love your videos and insights. But if you are going to continue with them you might consider buying one of those devices or tripods or whatever is called that holds the cellphone so you can do overhead shots of the books so you don’t have to hold the books in front of the camera.

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  8 месяцев назад

      Not interested in doing those sort of overhead videos, I could but they hold no interest for me - don't even use a cellphone for this, just a basic set up of a mac and mike. I work in the field of video / graphics and design, could easily do overhead but I happy with the way I do them now. It is not my main channel (I do Photoshop tutorials / video design etc on other channels). It is a place for me to enthuse about the books I like and hopefully everyone finds them of use and rushes out and finds those books for themselves

    Very nice review. Some classic early Marvel comics. Do you have any other Iron Man Omnibus, or have the other early stories in epic format?

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  10 месяцев назад

      I have many of the stories in epic format up to the mid 70s, though I will replace them if they bring them out in omnibus such as a volume 2 and 3
