Honestly it is a combination of experience, comfort, and knowledge. I have taken several freediving classes and now I am an instructor teaching exactly what you are asking. I spend 2 days teaching the skills needed to have insane breath hold and freediving abilities.

90% of the footage was filmed with the liquid Image mask. Even the footage of me shooting toward the camera was with a liquid Image mask. I tethered it to the kelp and got the shot I was looking for.

Those are some very inspirational words to me. Honestly, comments like these are one of my strongest motivations for spending countless hours making and editing these videos. As of now, I am a host for a new Adventure TV show. The show is going to be called Harbor House Life. We have just finished filming 10 episodes and I have watched the edited product for about half of them. EPIC is all I can say. We are also working on 35 social media episodes also that will put you on the edge of your seat.

Here is how I do it. I use a float line with a small 2 lb weight to mark the hole, pinnacle, or fishy spot. I then hunt with a reel on my gun for 3 reasons.
    1- less drag
    2- quick
3- If I need to shoot a fish a second time, I dont have to worry about a second float line.
All my guns have the same setup.
    OMER:
    65cm - match 30 reel
    75cm - match 50 reel
    80cm - match 50 reel
    85cm - match 50 reel
    95cm - Sporasub one 50 reel
    105cm - " one 80 reel
    115cm - " one 80 reel
    130cm - " one 80 reel

Southern California is great. Lots of fish, and every once in a while, a big one shows up. Make sure you know the fish and game regulations and the areas that are allowed to spearfish in before you go out for a dive.

It is great to know that my videos have inspired you. The 75cm is a good size gun for bottom hunting in that area. I like that gun and the O.ME.R Kanaloa. I can take shots up to 8 feet away, but for big lingcod, I get as close as possible. Shooting behind the eye offers the highest probability of hitting the brain or spine. The fish is what we called "Stoned" - no feeling, no pain.

Yes, I have seen a great white 3 times in my life while I was in the water. When you spend as much time in the ocean as I do, it is just a matter of when you will get the visit. It does not stop me from doing what I love. It just comes with the territory.

Hey Dan, I'm a huge fan of your videos and your one of the people who inspired me to start spearfishing in the cold waters I live in (Seattle). I have 2 questions, one I am going to buy a new gun and after researching it seems like a Omer cayman HF camu 75cm is my favorite, if you know the realistic range of a stock 75cm I would much appreciate feedback. And also, you seem to shoot lif of in the eye, why?

  • @freedivingdan
    @freedivingdan  12 лет назад +3

LOL, I had the video mask tied to the kelp. I would never shoot my speargun towards another person.

Hey Dan been following your videos for a long time..great work, always entertaining. Ive been spearing for about 2 years now and was wondering your thoughts on the controversial topic of reel vs float line. Ive been diving with a float line & thinking about a reel. I see your using it in this video even when bottom fishing. Just thought id get your opinion before I forked out the few hundred bucks for a reel. Issues with the reel in the kelp? As I mostly spear monterey, carmel area Thanks again

@pugetsoundspearo, I'm pretty sure you shoot them behind the eye because if you shoot them correctly it's an instant kill and if you shoot them in the head, they usually won't bleed because blood in the water is bad

Dan, I'm definitely going to be buying an O.ME.R. 3D camo suit in the next couple of months, but I have a few questions. Firstly, what thickness would you recommend, 5 or 7mm? Also, high waist/farmer john? I will be ab diving, spearfishing, and generally exploring the nor call coast mostly with occasional trips out to monterey/carmel. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I am not sure what you consider small fish, but many of those fish are about as big as they come for their species. I love to eat those fish that I spear. Unlike many fishermen who just filet the fish, I prefer to cook them whole. I eat every morsel of meat.
I appreciate food more than most. I know more about that fish and what it took to create my meal than you could imagine.

    • @freedivingdan

I prefer a 7mm O.ME.R two piece wetsuit. If I dive past 30ft, I use about 8-10% of my body weight, and if I dive shallower I will add 2 pounds at a time until I reach neutral buoyancy at the desired depth.
