  • The Story: Alan Austin's Notebook on The Execution
In 1995, we set out to do a story about Capital Punishment -- a macro-examination of an execution's effect on all who take part in it or have a stake in it. What happens to the warden and the guards who feed and tend the man only to send him off to die? What happens to the chaplain whose job is to minister to terrified people that the chaplain's own institution is killing? To the relatives of the man's victims -- do they gain some comfort or "closure" by the death of the murderer? To the relatives of the murderer -- is their grief or agony a fair price to pay for it all? Above all, we would get to know the condemned man, learn everything we could about him and his crimes, and record what happens to him as he sees his death approaching. Most Americans have made it clear that they favor the Death Penalty. But support or opposition to it seems based largely on abstract arguments and slogans about crime and punishment. What if the whole process were to be given human faces at close range? Might it have an affect on our opinions about Capital Punishment?

At the end...old man Collier strolling back up to the house, with a strong stride, at 97 years old.... Old men like that always amaze me. My grandfather was a catfish farmer in Southeast Texas. He passed away at 100 years old, and worked on his farm until just a few months before he passed. I remember being in my early 40s and my grandpa in his mid 90s...running circles around me when I'd be there to help him. The last day we spent time alone together, we were feeding his cows. He was 99 years old, throwing hay out and enjoying himself thoroughly. We sat and watched his new prized bull, he was a huge bull with quite a personality. We just sat and laughed as we watched him. I will be 53 next month... I hope to go that long, and hope to find enjoyment every day the way my grandfather did. He out lived my grandmother by about 23 years. He missed her every day, but he still loved life...and lived it to the fullest.
My best friend in high-school had a great grandfather that was 103 years old. We went to visit him one day, and he was outside mowing on his riding lawnmower, in extreme Texas summer heat, not phased a bit.
I've known quite a few folks who made it that far in life. They've often outlived all their people, they've been through loss and tragedy...but they always seem to still have a zest for life.

My dad lived to 84, and was riddled with rheumatoid arthritis. He also had a rare disease in his esophagus. He lived with me and my family for the last year of his life, and was bed ridden, on a feeding tube and an oxygen machine. But he still sat in bed and did his very minimal leg exercise and arm exercises. Most people in his shape would have died 15 years sooner. But he just kept going.
He died only because he caught the flu, Covid, and pneumonia all at the same time...and he almost had that beat, but the pneumonia just wouldn't ever fully go away.

Thank you for proving by example the fact that this penalty is meted out for purely arbitrary reasons - you’re against it ‘generally’ but because you have found good reason to detest him, the death penalty is OK with you. And isn’t that exactly the problem, why not just call it what it is: revenge? If you study the legal justice system you will find that the concept of revenge does not appear. Today with the takeover in our country increasingly of undercover criminal advocates, becoming "prosecutors" and judges there's no guarantee if somebody gets "life" that they won't be set free eventually.

I have a few questions I ask that you consider. Before asking I want to assure you I am not soft of crime or criminals despite my beliefs regarding capital punishment. I'm actually pretty much a lock'm up and throw away the key type. I actually agree with you in believing the world would be a better place without particular individuals a part of it.
      Okay, the questions:
1 Do you believe the prison system in this country has the ability to keep prisoners behind bars, walls and high fences?
      2. Did you know capital punishment has never been proven a deterrent.?
      3. What's the difference between retribution and justice?
      4. Did you know that roughly 1,700 condemned prisoners have been executed since the Supreme Courts outlawing of executions was reversed in 1976? and did you know roughly 170 condemned people since 1976 have had their convictions reversed because advances in technology proved they could not have committed the crime?
      5. Are you willing to accept knowing that for every ten condemned criminals one is likely looking to be murdered by the state because he or she was wrongfully convicted?
6, How do we correct possible mistakes made after the death sentence has been carried out?
      7. Is your blood lust so great you are willing to play a role, albeit a small role, in the murder of an innocent person?
      8. Do you believe justice in this country is a bought and sold commodity? That the wealthy experience our justice system differently than those without the same resources? Does this happen?
I know what my answers are. I'm curious what yours might be.

@@misterdeeds2172 At first I really thought that you were interested in the answers to your questions and what the answers would be. However when you made "statements of facts" that are in fact not true, then you become the standard left wing idiot. So in answer to some of your questions that do not presuppose a bunch of crap:
No, I do not believe that our prisons keep people out of society and the rates of recidivism are astronomical which means people were out on the streets again.
Most people in prison claim that they are innocent and especially to soft hearted people who they can manipulate. The answers that you find between inmates tend to be more honest and the numbers of " innocent" prisoners is not anywhere close to one in ten.
Do I know how many people have been put to death, why yes I do. Do you know how many people have been murdered by prisoners out on parole or probation or pardons?
If you wanted a real conversation then that would be reasonable but you don't and you mouth the same old lines without knowing or searching for the true story.

@@misterdeeds2172 Let me tell you this. These people are psychopats and sociopats. Why do you think they appeal? They are scarred. But they are not scarred they will die, they are scarred they lost. It puts them down. When they killed their victims they had their lives in their hands. This gave them a special feeling they are something more and they can decide whether someone lives or dies. If they get life long sentence they still have hope they will get out. Watch how so many of them say the state is going to kill them. Yes technically. They killed themselves at the time they commited their crime they just thought they would get away with that. Execution brings the end and they know they cannot manipulate anyone anymore, they know they lost the game and they know they will be forgotten. Death penalty will never reduce crime. Just knowing they want so desperately live is showing you how sick and coward they are. About innocent people being executed. Psychopaths are not mentally ill they think they are right to their very soul. If you become one of their victims, it is your fault, not theirs. If you trusted one of them that is your fault for trusting them. They have no empathy for anyone. They normally feel no emotion and only feel emotion in very stressful situations. Hence the animation of psychopaths, such as Ted Bundy, during their trials. They might have been in serious trouble, but at least they felt something.
Their real danger is the fact that they aren’t ill and can act perfectly normal, all the while that they are hiding their psychopathy.

This is a fantastic job in covering this topic . Well done.
I did time. Alot of it in County. I am a Texan. I watched many capitol cases go through the courts. How the men were when they were released into general population. Their attitudes and behaviors with myself and others. The court process and court rulings.
Every killer I observed had the same characteristics as this man.
Except the crimes of passion cases where on an emotional whim a death occurred.
To share space and breath the same air with a cold killer. You discern quickly the differences in men and people.
Satan and evil are very real. I'm a Christian. Not from a jailhouse conversion either.
Men as this one try real hard as you discovered and pointed out, to act normal and become like everyone else . They cannot and this is one question in my over 50 years on this planet and God fearing man I have today .
The only case where I truly believe Jesus was ever present and showed himself was Karla Faye Tucker.
Whether the death penalty is the solution?
Well, the system is so broken that they had better be absolutely certain before even considering handing that sentence down.
I went wrongly convicted and have a story to tell I do.
God's speed to all affected by this man and his actions.

Here we go with the “MOTHER “ BS. My mother left us, she decided not to pick me up for school at age 8, my brother age 5. I remember the beatings and her rage. Because I didn’t eat something she made, she fed it to me as the throw up back in the bowl or sat for 8 hours until my dad came home. At 61, I still don’t eat tomato soup or syrup…My dad loved me but was an alcoholic, so every time something happened I was use to it... Touching my friends or beatings with a belt and calling me stupid. Only until I was in my 30’s, I didn’t realize he was talking about himself. I never say the word stupid. At the age of 10, I was grocery shopping on my own. Only once a month, went hungry the rest of the time. Left home at 17, got a job. Bought my first home at 26, worked at the post Office. Divorce and remarried years later. 30 yrs later I have two kids and I have no regrets. Choices..Make the right choices, no matter how you were raised. This is a very short version. @@sourgummiez "What does witnessing ending the criminalskfe have to do with whether or not their life should end? Weird comment"
That's kind of exactly the problem. For you an execution is just a headline in a newspaper. For you it's nothing more than "that guy deserves to die for what he did"
You feel nothing but the anger at the crime and you think you can prevent that crime from happening again by getting somebody else to kill the suspect.
The people who actually perform the executions have to see it happen, they have to put needles in, throw switches, watch a person die by _their_ hand because *SOMEBODY ELSE* wants them dead.
Why did they take that job? Go ask them, it's often because they are afraid that if _they_ don't do it, somebody with less respect for life and more feelings of vengeance will have a go and torture the prisoner "because they deserve it". Just like you are saying now, because you have no clue what it's like to actually carry out that sentence.
Yes I know, you think killers should not deserve respect, and again I say: go apply for the job of executioner and see how long you'll last.
See how long you'll feel right about it; watching a person die because of your desire to see them die.
...because... only killers feel good when they take a life. You won't. And neither do the people who do the executions.
It's VERY easy to demand that a person be killed when YOU don't have to do it, just like it's very easy to say that women can't get abortions when you're a man, that soldiers should invade a country when you can stay behind, it's always easy to demand that somebody else does the hard work for you and as soon as _YOU_ have to do it, you'll change your mind like a leaf in the breeze.
No ofcourse your'e not going to admit that, because there is absolutely no chance that you'll ever perform an execution, it's easier to sit here and pretend at being a tough guy.
There are plenty of good documentaries about this by Trever McDonald, there is one with a former executioner. If you hear him speak about what he did, you'll maybe get some idea. But I doubt it.
